Chapter 16 Class is a Success

"Okay, class!" Wendy said. "Why don't we go over to the rug for circle time!" The kids all got up from the tables and made their way to the rug. Some of them were smiling like super models, which made Wendy smile too. She made her way into the chair in front of the rug and grinned at the kids. "So, you all know the drill!" She started to sing. "What is the weather like today, what is it like today?"

The kids sang along. Some of them were a little off key, but considering that they were only five, that was understandable. Besides, some others actually had very pretty singing voices. Those stand out examples were singing the loudest in the class. They sounded like sparkly, twinkling bells. Wendy closed her eyes, allowing herself to admire the sound for the first time.

"It's sunny!" she said, finally coming to the end of the song. "It's sunny today!"

The kids laughed. "It is sunny!" one said.

"The sun hurts my eyes!" said another.

"Well, then why don't you wear sunglasses?" Wendy suggested with a beaming face.

The kid looked down at the floor in awe. "I never thought about that." He smiled. "I'll ask my mom!"

"Good idea!" Wendy said. "That way, you can be cool like my big brother Roy!" She looked up at the clock. "Now, it's time for snacks! After that, we'll get ready for our counting lessons!"

The kids excitedly got up and went to their cubbies. As they went back to their tables with snacks in hand, Wendy took a seat in the teacher's desk. Larry and Morton, who had been observing her next to the supply closet, each had wide eyes.

"What's gotten into you?" asked Larry. "You're like a whole new person today!"

Wendy shrugged. "I just feel a lot better today. That's all."

Morton smiled. "Well, that's good. You're doing a good job with the kids today too."

Wendy's tail curled up and her face grew warm. She chuckled.

"Thanks," she said. She pulled out three apples and three chocolate bars from her hammerspace. "Why don't we treat ourselves to some snacks too?"

Before she had even finished the sentence, Larry and Morton snatched the chocolate bars and began to wolf them down. Wendy looked at them in shock before she carefully opened her own chocolate bar. She nibbled on it as the smile returned to her face.

"Yeah," she said out loud. "This isn't so bad after all."

...

"And that's the function of the cell membrane!" Lemmy said in front of his class with a grin. "The hydrophyllic heads and the hydrophobic tails allow water and other substances to get in and out of the cell much more easily!"

The high school students nodded and start to jot down notes. Lemmy took the time to observe their faces. They actually looked interested! They were writing down the notes with smiles and nods! This was spectacular! Just as Lemmy was thinking this, the bell rang, signifying the end of the day.

"Okay, guys!" Lemmy said. "Time to pack up! I'll see you tomorrow!"

The students nodded and put their notes away. They filtered out of the classroom like bees leaving the hive. The last person to leave, a golden haired koopa girl, turned and waved at Lemmy.

"See you later, Sensei!"

"See you later!" Lemmy said while returning the wave. Once the classroom was empty, Lemmy skipped over to the desk and sat back in his chair. "Well, it looks like I've got the next period free. Is there anything you want to talk about, Iggy?"

Iggy, who had been standing next to the desk, cast Lemmy the biggest of all glares. Lemmy chuckled.

"Ohhhh, that's right." He grinned with sadistic pleasure. "Kamek magically removed your voice until the week is up!" He laughed and leaned back in his chair. "That's a shame."

Iggy glared at his brother's sarcasm. He shook his head and let out a silent sigh as Lemmy closed his eyes.

"Yeah," he said to himself. "Now this is an awesome class."

...

Roy gulped. The middle schoolers were staring into his soul. He gripped his marker and glanced at Ludwig and Celia, who were sitting in the back of the classroom. This gave him enough strength to continue.

"Hey guys." He gulped again. "I just wanted to apologize to you all for yesterday. I didn't give you the right information." He turned back to the board and drew a whole note, a half note, a quarter note, and an eighth note. He let out a breath and pointed toward the drawings. "These things are actually called notes, not golf clubs. They are what help musicians to read and write music."

The kids nodded. Some even smiled, which helped Roy feel a little better.

"I have to be honest," he said to the kids. "I still don't know a lot about music. But I am willing to learn! I think music is a pretty awesome class! And if you are willing to teach me what you guys have been taught over the past year, I think that could be really cool!"

The kids exchanged looks. One kid at the front of the room smiled at Roy.

"Sure, Mr. Koopa! That sounds like it could be fun."

Roy smiled. He looked up at Ludwig, who gave him a wink. His smile grew brighter as he turned back to the kids.

"Thanks guys. Now, where should we start?"

With that, the kids put on a smile. One got up and took the marker from Roy.

"Let's start with the different musical eras."

Roy took a seat in the front of the classroom, willing and ready to learn. As the kid went on about the different musical eras, his smile grew bigger.

I guess my class is a success, he thought to himself.
