Lily loved the rain.
Yes, she knew getting wet in the freezing deluge would not be fun, but she could certainly enjoy her coffee, watching the raindrops splatter on the window pane, and shining in the moonlight. A small part of her knew that she should be trying to call her parents and Petunia — who was on a date with her latest beau — and inquired about their safety, but a much larger part of her would rather enjoy the solitude.
Maybe she could use the peace and quiet to write to James?
James had recently been upgraded from mortal enemy to friend and finally to boyfriend in just a month. By the end of sixth year, the couple were stuck to each other by the hip. They had lost the ability of doing anything exciting without rushing over to the other to share it. And Merlin, James had a lot to share!
It's a wonder that they survived the holidays for a whole week already by just exchanging regular owls. Very regular owls. Artemis and Gimmick now often exchanged letters on the route, instead of making the full journey. Because often, their stupid humans sent a second letter without waiting for a reply on their first one. All the poor birds could do about it was roll their large eyes and do their job.
Lily's exciting things were quiet, like how pretty she found the rain, or her sister is definitely dating a walrus. Sometimes, she'd have an epiphany about what made people tick or why Peter had started to dress like it's always winter.
And yet, she would have James' undivided attention.
James also could understand Lily's unique sense of humour which was beyond most of human civilization. Right then, Lily had some hilarious things about her sister in her mind that she couldn't wait to write to James about.
If Artemis could get it to James by tomorrow morning, he'll be snorting over her hilarious jokes at breakfast the next day.
Something Lily had seen him do when he found something humorous in the morning paper. She decided that it was definitely worth lighting a candle for.
Here's the deal, by deluge, I meant a thunderstorm, with lightning, strong wind and a power cut. Lily didn't mind power-cuts. Nor did Artemis the owl or Venus the cat. They all thrived in the darkness. Lily wondered if she could manage to write in the dark, but after spending a considerable amount of time looking for her inkwell, she resigned herself to light a couple of candles.
A couple, which soon became a score, presented the perfect luminosity for the letter she had to write. With a satisfied smile, she arranged herself on her desk.
Dear James,
I wish we weren't apart. Writing this is not nearly as entertaining as telling it to you. Because, this way, I only get to imagine you laughing. I'd much rather —
That's when she heard the doorbell.
She sighed sadly, as her luck would have it, Petunia must have invited Vernon to stay the night, Lily thought mournfully.
She picked up a candle and walked downstairs taking her merry time, trying to preserve the cosy atmosphere for a moment long. Mournfully, she unlocked the door and opened it to find —
"James?!"
"I hate the Knight bus." James declared, grinning madly; he was drenched and shivering.
Lily blinked at him for a few seconds before coming to her senses and pulling him in.
"You're soaked!" she exclaimed as she helped him out of his jacket and covered him with a rug.
"Go in there, that's my room. I have lit some candles, they might keep you warm for a while," she ordered urgently, leading his taller form by the arm upstairs and in her room, while she continued on to the master bedroom. " And get these clothes off, I'll get you something to wear."
Lily hunted through her father's drawers to find clothes he wouldn't miss. A smile forming on her lips.
James was here to see her!
Choosing a worn-out khaki at the bottom of the drawer and a pale blue shirt, she hurried back to her room to find him feeding treats to Artemis, still in the same clothes, but not shivering anymore. He had removed his wet sneakers and left them in the corner of the room.
"She's rather fond of my Mum's coconut cookies. I thought I'll bring her some." He informed Lily as she entered the room.
"Is that why you decided to brave the weather? To feed Arty cookies?" Lily asked, moving closer to stand next to him.
"Anything for my favourite girl." He teased, and pulled Lily into a hug and kissed her all over.
"You are making me wet!" She complained with a giggle. She combed her hand through his hair, shaking the water out of it. "Merlin, I missed you so much!"
"Me too.' James confessed softly as Lily handed him the clothes and gestured towards the bathroom. James nodded at her and did as directed., returning in no time, as he stuffed the contains of his old pants into the khakis' pockets, leaving a small folded note in his hand.
"I look great in these, right?" He asked. He twirled in front of the mirror making Lily laugh again.
"So," he started, offering the folded note to Lily. "I came to deliver this. I tried making Gimmick bring it, but he almost pecked my eye out."
"Sounds about right." Lily said, taking the letter and putting it aside. She pulled James to sit beside her on her bed. "I must thank him the next time I see him."
"I see he saved my girl Arty a trip too." James said, noticing the letter on the desk.
"Yes, I guess." Lily smiled pulling her legs on the bed and settling down.
She and James had a lot to talk about. Like always.
