The Quiet Sound of Wings
(Part 4)
Castiel sighed and tore his eyes away. Not even the bees with their happy little dances could ease the guilt he felt.
He rubbed his face trying to hide his shame. As an angel of the Lord he didn't sleep, but right about now he was so exhausted he wished he could.
Cas felt as if he was tainting the purity of this endless Tuesday that he usually considered his happy place. He looked up at the kite in the sky wanting more than anything for his father to answer this time, but he knew better than that. God had stopped answering anyone a long time ago. He was a fool if he thought that would change now.
Cas found Dean sitting in "baby" outside a quaint burger joint in Denver where Sam was inside ordering.
"Hey, where you been man?" Dean asked as he got out of the car to greet his friend. Things had been a little strained between them for months now, but Cas couldn't think of anyone he would rather ask for help.
"Dean, I need some advice… Uh… For a friend of mine." 'Yes,' Cas thought, 'that is how the humans did it when they were embarrassed.'
"Oh," Dean said with an understanding nod. "Sure, Cas, What's up?"
"Well this FRIEND of mine," he put emphasis on the word, "Can sometimes be prideful and arrogant…" He went on ignoring the knowing look that crossed Dean's face. "This friend was talking to someone that this friend of mine cares for, deeply, and may have said some things he… or she… regrets."
"Hmm," The older winchester pondered for a moment. "Well, I would suggest that you….your friend talk with the person he or she cares about and apologize. That person, if he... or she… feels the same, should understand."
Castiel speculated for a moment then nodded. "Yes, I think my friend will find this quite helpful. Thank you, Dean." And he left to find Meg.
Meg was sitting at a bus stop, waiting for the next bus to the clinic. It came and went, but she couldn't make herself move. The knots in her stomach were worse than any morning sickness or nausea she had experienced.
As the next bus pulled up to the corner, she heard wings in the distance and looked up to see Castiel just an intersection away. Right then it didn't even matter that the bus wasn't headed in the right direction, she ran on quickly and took a seat in the back.
She glanced out the window and regretted it almost immediately. Cas had the look of a lost puppy on his face, and it tugged at her heart. That was until she remembered his harsh words.
"Abomination," she heard him again in her head. "Get rid of it or I will!" This time it was anger she felt, not sorrow.
Castiel followed the bus until he saw Meg get off. He walked up to her, smiling at how beautiful she looked, but unable to hold it steady when he saw the pain in her eyes.
"Don't worry Castiel, I am going to take care of this myself, I don't need you to follow me around to make sure."
"Meg," he began, but she held up a hand and stopped him.
"You made it clear how you feel about me and this abomination, so just leave." She turned to walk away. More wings rustled and then he was in front of her again.
"Cas, please just leave me alone." She begged him, her voice breaking slightly.
He hesitated a moment, starting to second guess his decision. Maybe she wouldn't be able to forgive him. "I…" Something pulled at him and without thinking he reached out placing a hand on her belly. A quick smile played across his lips before she smacked his hand away.
"Girls," he said, looking into Meg's eyes. "Twins." Tears welled up, he was filled with pride and joy hearing their tiny heartbeats and feeling their consciousness, one significantly stronger than the other.
"Meg please don't get rid of them. I know now that I was just scared. I overreacted, and if i could take it all back, I would." He paused for a moment, giving her a chance to speak. When she didn't take it he got nervous again. "I know what happened cannot be undone, but if you give me the chance, I would like to make it up to you…"
He didn't get to finish his thoughts as two angels attacked him from behind. He tried to put up a fight, but he didn't want to hurt Meg or their babies. He stopped struggling and let them take him away.
"Cas." He heard Meg's worried call to him.
When the angels finally stopped, Naomi sat in front of him at her desk. He was forcefully shoved into a chair before they let go of him and left.
"Castiel, you know this cannot happen." No response. "The demon and her spawn cannot be allowed to live." When he still said nothing she went on anyway.
"Fine, be silent, but know that I am giving you a choice. You can do what God intended for you and destroy the whore and the abomination she carries... " She held up a hand to stop his immediate protest. "I know you 'love' her, it's all over your thoughts… I will never understand such human feelings… So if you do this, if you end her, I will take away all memories of it; your conscious will be clean. Or I will take your grace and the bitch can live for now, but be warned that she and the child, if you can even call it that, will be hunted by demons and angels for the rest of their lives and you will be powerless to protect them."
Cas only sat still for a second before attempting to escape. He ran out the door and was greeted by the two guards who had brought him here.
"Step aside." He warned them letting his blade slide out of his sleeve into his hand. They were not intimidated as they too readied their weapons.
"Castiel," he heard Naomi. "there is no point in fighting. You are outnumbered. You know you will never make it out of heaven alive."
He knew she was right. He didn't care; he had to try.
He was forced back into the chair, only this time he was bloody and breathing heavy.
"Castiel," She refused to use that stupid nickname given to him by the Winchesters. "You will not get another chance to answer this question. Which do you choose?" There was still nothing from Cas but silent anger.
"Make your decision or I will make it for you!"
Meg made the long walk home in the hot afternoon sun, wishing she had just taken the bus again. However, she needed time to think.
Yes, she was worried for Cas, and she hoped he would be alright, but that didn't stop her from thinking that maybe he should suffer a little bit. He deserved it. She was petty and unashamed. When she reached the right street she had made her decision. The next time she saw Cas, she would tell him to shove it and would do whatever she wanted without him or his permission.
She stepped into her building and onto the elevator hitting the button for the third floor. On the short ride she was talking herself up and building the courage to call Cas to her as soon as she got home and they would have it out right then and there.
Despite her resolve, Meg was still unprepared for what was waiting for her on her doorstep.
Castiel was huddled in the hallway looking weak and bloody. Every thought she had of a fight was gone as she rushed to him and helped him up. He looked at her like he was really seeing her for the first time as she all but dragged him inside and to the bed. She laid him down and pushed his hair back to see the damage.
"What happened?" She asked, her hand still on his bloodied swollen face.
He looked up at her, his blue eyes cloudy and out of focus as he struggled to keep them open.
"I chose you."
