CHAPTER 5
"Because you paint my world full of colours"
Merlin was slowly waking up, she was feeling colder than usual, frowning at that, she stretched a little and opened her eyes, looking around, she was in her bedroom, at Camelot.
She was a little confused, she had dreamed about the time when they had found Escanor at the village in the north, she hadn't thought about that in a long time, it seemed like it had happened in another life.
It has already been five years.
It seemed even longer from the last time they had seen each other.
She was feeling colder by the minute.
Finally she stood up, she had a long day ahead of her: Elizabeth, Diane and Elaine would be arriving soon to help her, she didn't really need their assistance, but hadn't been able to say no to them.
She had only the time to wash herself, put on a robe, and then her room was invaded by the other girls, who had decided to prepare together for the day, they hadn't wanted to leave her alone, and she was secretly enjoying their antics, and their enthusiasm was contagious.
They laughed, talked and got dressed, and they were ready to go in a few hours.
She had to admit that she was a little nervous, but also excited, and the company was reassuring, she was glad to not be alone but surrounded by friends.
Everyone had helped with the preparation of the event, Arthur had been adamant to have it take place at Camelot, they had agreed but were able to stop him to make a grand event out of it, they had wanted something small and simple, with just the people closer to them attending. They had set up everything in a private wing of the palace that was placed right beside the beautiful garden, so that they were able to have both an outside and inside event, varying from the time of day.
They were nearing the designated place, and almost unconsciously she began looking around searching specifically for someone, wanting to see him as soon as possible.
She couldn't almost believe that they were here, now, after all the things they had been through, after losing each other, finding one another, and then risking to lose it all again.
It had been a hard and tortuous journey.
XXXXXXXX
Their lips met, and her tears left her eyes, flowing down her cheeks, wetting her marks, and stopping against their locked lips, both of them could taste her bitter tears, but they continued kissing, pressing further against one another: both her arms were now curled around his neck, while his arm had circled her waist, and his other hand was positioned on her back, crushing her body to his. Their embrace and kiss were almost desperate, trying to make the better of it, to commit to memory every single thing, every feel and touch.
Instinctively she opened her mouth slightly, wanting to taste him, passing her tongue on his lips, lightly, it was just a quick lick, and then, realizing what she was doing, tried to take her tongue back, finding instead his own tongue following hers in her mouth; his action had her moaning, approvingly, and both gripped the other tighter to them, while their kiss deepened.
He was losing himself in her, but strangely, it felt like coming back home, it was more correct to say that he was finding himself again, while their tongues explored each other.
Suddenly Merlin could feel her marks burning up, her eyes opened wide in shock and pain, at the same time Escanor gasped, his eyes mimicking hers, they stopped kissing, her hands on his chest and his on her upper arms, and looked at each other in confusion, until the pain from her lower face increased, resulting in her moaning, shutting her eyes and gripping his shirt tightly; she was being burned all over again.
Just when the pain was gradually diminishing, Escanor began groaning, eyes shut, and hands gripping her more firmly, but trying not to hurt her. She opened her eyes to see him in clear pain, trying to resist it, but soon he screamed, letting her go, and falling down to his knees, bending on himself, with his head in his hands.
"Escanor!"
She exclaimed, worried, going to her knees and putting her hands on his shoulders, but she couldn't do anything because she didn't know what was going on. He went on groaning and moaning from the pain, and at one time Merlin had embraced him, trying to give him some strength, reassuring him that she was with him and that everything would be ok.
She was feeling something strange, she knew he was in pain, but could tell that he wasn't really in any danger, she could only stay there with him and wait it out, and if things got worse, she would try to teleport both of them to the other Sins for help.
Escanor was feeling like his head was exploding! And his back was hurting like hell!
Merlin's presence was a real lifesaver, being in her arms was making him endure the pain with more courage and determination.
All this went on for a few minutes, but gradually the pain was subsiding, he was feeling calmer, and the Mage could tell when everything was finally over.
"Escanor? Are you okay?"
Her tone was worried, she was passing a hand through his hair, caressing him, and was squeezing him to her still, trying to comfort him.
When his breaths were regular again, he slowly lifted his upper body, leaving her arms, but grasping her upper arms to balance himself on the ground.
What she saw made her gasp.
She was locked on his eyes, his blue, gentle, and wise eyes, and she was seeing their colour, the rest of her surroundings were still grey, but those blue eyes were piercing her world, and she couldn't breath.
He slowly lifted a hand, going to caress her cheek, so gently, she gasped again, a lone tear falling down from her eye, but he was quick to catch it with his thumb.
"Merlin"
Other tears followed down the first one, she was trembling, and gripping his shirt tighter and tighter.
It has been two years since she had heard her name uttered in such a beautiful and lovable way.
"Merlin"
She wept more, sobbing now, she couldn't believe it, she could believe none of it.
"Merlin, please, do not cry, I am here, I am back."
She shivered harder, and he circled her body with an arm, while he caressed her hair with his other hand, and she let him embrace her, hiding her face in his neck.
She couldn't remember if she had ever cried so hard, she was letting off all the stress, the pain, the crushed hopes, and was feeling a great amount of relief.
Finally... finally!
He let her vent out all her feelings, letting her weep against him while he caressed and reassured her of his presence. Hearing and seeing her like this was almost making him cry too.
"I am sorry, I am so sorry. I never wanted to make you suffer. I did not want to leave you, I am sorry."
He was whispering those words and others similar to her, again and again, never stopping until she had calmed down for the most part.
Slowly she lifted her head again, she knew she was a mess, she couldn't in any way be attractive with all her crying, but his eyes never stopped looking at her with anything but love, regarding her as the most beautiful person in the whole world, the most precious person to him.
"It's you...it is really you… you're back, you came back to me."
Her voice was hoarse from her crying, and she was trembling a little, her eyes couldn't tear themselves away from the marvellous blue of his, moving only slightly to look at his other features.
"I could not stay apart from you for long."
He was caressing her cheek.
"I love you."
At his words a caring sense of warm filled all her body, she could feel her heart beating faster, she was feeling alive.
"I love you too."
She whispered, trembling from all the sensations she was feeling.
"So much...so much…"
She didn't know how to express all the emotions coursing through her.
Escanor was embracing her still, smiling widely and softly at her words, she could see the tears forming in the corner of his eyes.
They were a mess, but a happy mess, and when they kissed, gripping each other strongly, this time their tears had the sweet taste of rekindled hope and newfound love.
XXXXXXXX
She went on trying to find him, she wanted to see him, they had been apart for a whole day and night, and the absence had been almost unbearable.
"Stop it Merlin! Endure it for a little longer, you two will see each other soon enough!"
Elizabeth was admonishing her, and pulling her towards an area prepared for her and the girls. The Mage almost pouted at her Big Sis-Sis, but sighed, and followed her.
She had never been one for rituals or formality, but they had agreed to do this right, they had waited this long, and she knew how important it was for him to do things right, seeing as she had won in the other aspect of their relationship.
She entered one of the two white tents placed at the edge of the garden, she knew he was in the other one, and her heart sped up in excitement.
XXXXXXXX
After he had recovered his memories, they had stayed with each other for a while, kissing and embracing one another, and then they began noticing other things: the marks on her face had vanished and they discovered that his back was again adorned with the lion tattoo. Talking with Mael, after they had returned to camp, he explained that probably a part of Sunshine had been staying dormant in Merlin's marks, and that part had carried Escanor's memories and identity as a member of the Seven Deadly Sins, so when they had kissed, Sunshine had woken up, and had gone to her former master, giving him back what she was preserving for him.
All the Sins had been ecstatic to have him back, obviously, and they had decided to party all day long, to celebrate the recovery of their teammate.
Before that, she had accompanied him to the village, he had talked to the chief and explained, at best, the situation, thanking him for everything he and the other villagers had done for him until now, then he had said goodbye to everyone, leaving Hanna for last. She was still a little upset, but seeing as he had recovered his memories, the fact that he and the Mage were holding hands, and that she could tell that he was almost a different man now, she had reluctantly said goodbye.
The Sins' celebration had been a chaotic but happy event, he was being pulled from one Sin to the other, everyone wanted to tell him what he had missed in these two years, and one could tell that he was absolutely moved by all the attention and care he was given from his teammates, and Mael had even gifted part of Sunshine to him, so that he could 'think straight again without the hindrance of another set of feelings that weren't even his own', and so that Escanor 'could keep safe the people he loved with a strength of his own', resulting in him maintaining his middle form throughout day and night; the Lion was almost moved to tears, and had thanked the Archangel with all his heart.
Later into the night Merlin and Escanor had sat down, just the two of them, in her tent, and talked till sunrise, they had had a lot of things to tell the other, particularly the Mage had been unusually forthcoming with informations and feelings, she didn't want to repeat the same mistakes again, she would open herself to him, talk to him more, she didn't want to lose him again because of her fears and problems.
XXXXXXXX
It has been an exciting and marvellous five years, she didn't regret a thing, he had been patient with her, she had always been there to support him, and they had even been able to create a miracle... or two!
Speaking of which…
"Sis-Sis, where are…"
She couldn't finish the phrase that two hurriedly set of footsteps entered suddenly the tent, stopping just inside and gasping at the sight of her.
"Mama! You're beautiful!"
"I fear that papa will faint when he'll see you."
She could only smile warmly at the two kids, her children, their miracles.
XXXXXXXX
When the topic was brought up, by some of the others, it had marked the beginning of a difficult time, especially for her, because she hadn't even known if she could have ever given him a child, mages weren't particularly fertile, and she had thought to be unable to bear a child, resulting in her falling in a tense and depressed mood. He had been unbelievably patient, and after he was able to make her admit what the problem was, he had simply said that they had just to try more, and that she didn't have to underestimate him.
XXXXXXXX
At the time she had thought that he was only trying to cheer her up, or that he was talking out of arrogance and pride, but he had proved her wrong, and was able to gift her with not one, but two beautiful twin children, that were already three and a half old.
"Ywain, Morgane, you two are very well dressed too, my dears."
She spread her arms and the two kids immediately ran to her, embracing her.
"We were just in father's tent, he's nervous!"
Morgane giggled.
"Was he now?"
Merlin could only smile warmly.
"Yes! And uncle Mael, and uncle Gowther were trying to calm him down."
She laughed slightly with her daughter.
"He was also very happy, and hadn't stopped smiling."
Ywain added.
"I am very happy too."
She responded, feeling warmth at her son's words.
"What about you two? Are you ready to do your job?"
She asked almost solemnly, and both children nodded vigorously.
"Yes! Big bro Arthur told us that he will signal us when it's our turn!"
"But we are ready and know what we have to do."
They had big smiles on their faces, and Merlin smiled too, hugging them again.
"Very well, you did good, my precious"
She kissed them on their heads, then let them go find their other friends.
They had really been blessed with two beautiful, strong, and wise children.
Ywain had his father's hair, but his captivating eyes were gold, like his mother, he was really the child of the lion and sun, while Morgane had her black hair and mischievous nature, but the splendid blue eyes of her father, giving Escanor an headache at the thought of all the males he would have to chase off.
"Merlin, it's almost time!"
Elizabeth woke her up from her happy thoughts, nodding at her and preparing at the exit of the tent.
Elaine and Diane were gone to look after the children, so that left just her and the goddess there.
"Are you nervous?"
Asked the queen of Liones, with a gentle smile. Merlin looked at her, smiling even more gently, and almost dreamily.
"A little, but it is more excitement than anything else"
The two women laughed slightly.
"I can't believe how happy I am, how blessed I have been."
The mage almost whispered to herself, smiling warmly at the memories of these last five years, while the other woman approached her and gave her a loving kiss on the forehead.
"I'm full of joy to see you finally happy Merlin! You did great!"
The raven haired woman was moved by the gesture and the words, and fought to hold back the tears that were forming in her eyes.
Right at that moment they began hearing the music, it was the signal that the ceremony was beginning.
They smiled at each other again, then Elizabeth put a white blindfold on her eyes, took her hands in hers, squeezing them a little in a reassuring gesture, and then escorted her outside.
In the other tent Escanor had been nervously walking up and down, excited about everything, and also anxious to see her. After everything that had happened to them, they had grew quite attached to one another, and had been inseparable for the first period, she was fearing that if she turned her head away from him for just a moment he would disappear again, and he wasn't going to lose the opportunity to spend every minute of his time with her, they had missed each other terribly!
After five years they had settled down and were able to sustain not seeing the other for some time, but they could never sleep well alone.
Mael and Gowther had tried to calm him down, but he couldn't, not really, he had too much energy flowing through him, they finally were here, now.
He couldn't wait to see Merlin!
"Papa! You're nervous!"
His little girl giggled.
He snatched her around the waist, lifting her up and making her squeal in delight.
"Papa! Hahaha!"
"You're happy papa."
His son wasn't really asking, it was more an affirmation, and he knew he had been smiling like a fool all this time.
"Of course I am! I am marrying your mother!"
He put Morgane against his side, holding her with one arm, lifting up Ywain with his other, having both his children in his arms.
"I bet mama will be beautiful!"
Exclaimed his son.
"And you're very handsome papa!"
Added his daughter.
Escanor laughed.
"Thank you my dear, and yes, your mother will be absolutely enchanting, I am sure of it!"
He wanted to see her soon!
"Why don't you go see her for me?"
The two children nodded enthusiastically, he kissed their cheeks, resulting in them giggling more, being tickled by his mustache, and let them down, they then sprinted to the exit of the tent.
He looked at them go with a warm loving gaze, he couldn't almost believe how blessed they had been, the two children were their greatest gift, even if, at first, they hadn't been ready to take care of two, at the end they managed, it had been an adventurous journey, and he couldn't express all his gratitude to have had Merlin by his side. At first he had wanted to marry her before anything else, but she had insisted that she didn't need that to stay with him and to love him, and she hadn't wanted to wait too long for him to be doing the proper thing, so, after a month, he had surrendered to her, and they had agreed to marry one day, when things were settled down, but in the meantime they wouldn't refrain from, well, enjoying themselves.
He remembered clearly their first time, she had completely and inevitably seduced him, and he hadn't been able to resist anymore, nor he had wanted to.
"I think it's time for us to go, it will be starting soon."
Gowther said, waving and smiling at him, before leaving the tent. Mael put a hand on Escanor's shoulder and squeezed lightly.
"Well, I'll be waiting for you two outside"
Then he was gone.
Arthur had been absolutely euphoric when they had finally decided to marry, and had been adamant to have the ceremony held in Camelot and that, being the king, he would be the one marrying them, and Mael had insisted that he wanted to be the one blessing them. They had agreed with both, but had had to tamper down their enthusiasm, or they would have had a three days long wedding, and all of Britannia as their guests!
"So! You ready big guy?!"
Meliodas was there with him, he touched his arm in reassurance, he and Elizabeth would be the ones escorting them outside, to their partner.
He nodded, he couldn't wait much more to see her, he wanted all this to be over soon, so that they could have some alone time to show how much they loved each other.
They heard the music, approached the exit, Meliodas tied a white blindfold over his eyes, then he took him outside the tent.
The two tents were in front of each other, so when they were escorted out, they were staying in front of one another. They could feel the presence of their other half, Merlin's breath quickened and Escanor's heart was thundering in his chest, they were both excited, and wanted to see the other soon!
The goddess and the demon positioned the couple, so that they were just a step away from each other, and slowly lifted their hands, helping them to reach the knot on the back of the other's head. They both experienced a shiver when they touched, and could feel their skins heating up.
They had decided that the ritual would be simple but meaning, having two of their friends walking them to each other symbolized all the people who had helped them, and that had been there for them; the blindfolds were self explaining, they had been fools, they hadn't seen the other or they hadn't been able to reach the other on their own, but with the help of their comrades, they had been able to find one another, and had finally be able to really see and reach each other.
Slowly they unknotted the cloth around the other's eyes, letting it fall down, and finally they could see their lover again.
"Hi there"
Merlin was sporting a big, warm, and loving smile, that was only for him, her hands caressed his hair and nape, while he was staring at her with so much love, he was moved by the sight of her, smiling again like the fool in love that he was.
"Hi to you too"
He caressed her cheek gently, she closed her eyes at that, sighing softly. He wanted to kiss her so badly, but Meliodas cleared his throat, reminding them that they had a public celebration going on, they would have time for each other later.
They slowly let go of their partner, they had completely forgotten about everyone else who was watching them there, they had just been lost in each other.
Escanor took a step back, looking at her ensemble with great approval and lust in his eyes, she just smirked at him, knowing very well what he was thinking, recognizing his hungry gaze.
"You are absolutely magnificent, breathtakingly beautiful"
He whispered, almost reverently. She smiled wider at that, laughing slightly, satisfied by his reaction.
"You are very handsome yourself, and mouthwatering"
She winked at him, and he almost groaned, if she kept it up they wouldn't see the end of the ceremony, he would take her away in some dark corner much sooner!
He was wearing simple trousers, and a simple but elegant shirt, the first two buttons were open, teasing Merlin, wanting to rip it off of him soon!
Escanor loved how she looked in her dress, but couldn't wait to take it off of her too, it had a really low cut, the fabric that covered her breasts, barely, was attached to two, almost invisible, silver strings, that passed over her shoulders, criss crossed over her back, and attached right over her behind, the rest of the dress flowed over her curves like water.
His clothes were all white, with gold details, while her dress was completely white too, but with silver details.
He bowed and then offered her his arm, like a true gentleman, she smiled warmly, this kind of behaviour from him had always made her heart flutter and her cheeks warm, she felt appreciated and loved, so, without hesitation, she took his arm, pressing herself to his side, while he covered her hand on his arm, with his other hand.
Meliodas and Elizabeth walked down the path between all the sitting guests, toward the front where Arthur and Mael were waiting for the marrying couple.
Escanor and Merlin walked some way behind them, looking at all the people who had gathered there for them: other than the Sins and their children, there were also king Barthra, Margaret and Veronica, and also some of Liones' Holy Knights, Gilthunder, Griamore, Howzer, Jericho, Guila, Hendrickson and Dreyfus and a few others, they could see also the druids, and far from all the rest, even Zeldris and Gelda.
Arriving at the front, the goddess and the demon sat down in the front row, near Morgane and Ywain, who were completely taken with their parents, and excited about the ceremony, ready for their turn.
The lovely couple stopped in front of Arthur, who was looking at them with stars in his eyes, and could hide his excitement only slightly, beside him was Mael, with a happy smile on his face, watching them almost proudly.
Arthur began the ceremony, making a formal speech before adding some personal comments, then told the two to turn toward one another, taking a hand each, and tied them together with a gold and silver ribbon, speaking solemn words and explaining how this symbolized their union, their bond, that they had accepted to be forever tied to the other; Mael then came forward, bringing a chalice, full of wine, he passed it to them, both taking it with their untied hands, Escanor went first and offered the first sip to Merlin, helping her to drink it, she did the same to him right after, then the chalice was passed back to Mael, who blessed them, explaining how this symbolized the two member of the couple helping out each other, being there for the other, and being invested in their lives, as a couple and as a single person who will always be there supporting his/her partner.
Throughout the ceremony, the Boar and the Lion had been always looking at each other, half listening to all the explanations and the rest of the speeches, too taken by the other, and excited by all this.
Arthur gestured to their children, and immediately Ywain and Morgane were standing up, taking what Elizabeth and Meliodas gave them, and walked, as seriously as possible, to their parents, who were watching them with matching smiles full of love.
Morgane went to Merlin's side, while Ywain positioned himself beside his father, Arthur went on with the ceremony, asking for the two adults to give their promises.
Escanor went first.
"Merlin, you are the love of my life, I could not live without you, it was true before, and it is even truer after five beautiful years together, you gave me everything that I had ever dreamed of, we have two beautiful children, you made me the happiest man alive, and I promise you I will live the rest of my life doing anything I can to make you happy and support you, in any way I can, in any way you will need me to. I love you, and I am honored to call you 'my wife'. I am yours."
Saying that, he took the ring offered by Ywain, a simple silver band with a single gold stone, on the inside were engraved the words 'my moon', and slipped it on her finger.
His speech had Merlin almost in tears, but she took a deep breath and willed them to stay there, even if her voice was a little hoarse from the emotions that he had instilled in her.
"Escanor, my love, my everything, I am so grateful to have you with me, you gave me life and love, you are the reason why I am so happy, why I have been so happy these last five years. You helped me make not one miracle but two of them, you gave me everything, you teached me how to dream and made the dreams that even I didn't know I had, come true; you teached me what it means to be loved, what love really means. I am so grateful to call you 'my husband'. I am yours."
She took the ring from Morgane, the band was gold, the stone silver, and inside were engraved the words 'my sun'.
Escanor was brought to tears too.
True be told, they weren't the only ones trying to rein in their emotions, some people were obviously sobbing or trying to dry their cheeks, those were some very heartfelt vows, and everyone had felt it.
Arthur tried to pull himself together, so that he could end the ceremony, then made a final speech, cut the ribbon that was tying their hands, leaving half of it knotted on each of their hands, added some well wishes to the couple, and finally Mael said to seal their promise with a kiss.
The two almost didn't let him finish, Merlin moved forward, Escanor's hand on her back guiding her to him, one of her hands on his collar, yanking him down to her, the other in his hair, mimicked by his free hand, supporting her head. They had been waiting for this for what seemed like forever, and when their lips met, both could feel the sparks flowing all over their bodies, they had missed being in each other's arms, even if only for a day and a night.
All the guests erupted in excited shouts, clapping and whistling, forcing the two newlyweds to separate, they were smiling like crazies, looking at one another with eyes full of love.
The banquet after was a joyful and loud event, thanks also to the great amount of alcohol being served that had Ban and Meliodas engage in some entertaining behaviours, both scolded by their respective wife.
The Lion and the Boar were watching everything, laughing and enjoying themselves, never walking too far from each other, and being able to steal only a few rare moments for one another during all of it, and the more time passed, the more they couldn't wait to be alone, their kisses growing hotter, while embracing tightly.
"Ugh! Mama, papa!"
The voice of their son brought them back to the present, finding their children looking at them, Ywain with an annoyed expression, while Morgane was giggling in her hands, usually they weren't bothered by them kissing openly, but it seemed obvious that the other children weren't of the same opinion, their poor son felt a little embarrassed.
"Ah! You are lucky! You don't know how I found them once!"
Arthur, a little tipsy from the alcohol, was near them.
"And they will continue to not know, because you won't tell them, right?"
Merlin was glaring at him, menacingly, her brows furrowed, and the king sweatdropped, swallowing in fear.
"A-ah! Of course Merlin! I would never!"
He raised his hands in a placating and surrendering gesture, while the children were watching the adults, confused.
"I think it is already past your bedtime, come on."
Escanor interjected, kneeling down beside their kids, who protested until a sudden yawn shut up them both, and making him smile in amusement.
"We'll put them to bed, then we will come back."
Merlin said, while Escanor scooped up both children in his arms, who then curled up against him.
Arthur watched them go: to think that those kids could have been conceived at the back of the castle...in the garden...on the wall…
He shocked his head forcefully, banishing the images branded in his memory, and went off finding something very strong to drink.
Meanwhile the two parents put their precious children to bed, hugging and kissing them goodnight, staying until they were completely asleep, they both loved looking at their two miracles, wondering how they could be so lucky as to have one another and them.
They went back to the party, enjoying the company of the people they cared about for some more time, talking, laughing, dancing and drinking, Merlin put to shame both Ban and Meliodas, winning their challenge to see who was the strongest drinker, Escanor stayed out of it, declaring that he would have to be sober enough to carry his wife to their room, needless to say that his words were welcomed by a round of whistles and teasings, that only increased when Merlin decided that her husband deserved a very hot kiss with a lot of tongue dueling, in front of everyone.
They had decided to posticipate their honeymoon for a couple of days, to make sure that everything would be taken care of, then they would leave their kids in the capable hands of Arthur and the Sins, while they would have a whole week for themselves alone!
The celebrations were over, everyone had retired to their rooms for the night, Escanor had really carried Merlin to their room, laughing and kissing all the way there, and now the newlyweds were in their bed, hugging each other after their first love making as husband and wife, feeling satisfied and loved.
They were both amazed and pleased by their new status, he was thinking about how she was his 'wife', loving that new word with which to call her now, while she couldn't wrap her head around the reason why the word 'husband' referred to him was giving her such euphoric feelings, she just knew that she thought of it as precious, and couldn't thank him enough for everything that he had done for her, he had really opened her eyes and saved her from her grey existence.
Afterall, it has been five years since she could see her world full of colours again.
