Return
Of all the things Professor E. Gadd expected to find when he heard the knock on his door, a paint of the unconscious figure of the Mushroom Kingdom's champion was certainly not on his list.
Without finding a culprit in sight, the professor promptly took the painting and brought it to his special machine. He thanked the stars that the process did not hurt the boy and only left him a little dazed.
"Hey, you daredevil!" He called urgently, earning the confused look of the hero, who looked around with slow understanding. "There is no time to lose, boy, the Kingdom and Princess Peach needs you!"
Mario watched him silently for a few seconds, before his eyes widened and he hurried out of his little shed.
The Professor adjusted his glasses, watching the red figure disappear into the darkness, yet his thoughts were only focused on a boy dressed in green.
"L... Why did you do it, my boy?"
Super Mario
"There's nothing to worry about!" Exclaimed Toad confidently, a bright expression on his face. "After all, Super Mario always saves us!"
The Toadstools celebrated, though they stopped when they saw the look of horror on the hero's face and confusion on the thief's.
"What did you say?" Asked the tallest one, his face slowly lighting up.
"Nothing! He said nothing!" The elder intervened, waving his hands.
"No, no. He said something." He lay down on top of him, looking over his head at the little Toadstool (who understood nothing) with delight. "What did you call him?"
"I..." He looked at his companions, the same expressions of apprehension and bewilderment on their faces, then he looked at Mario, who was looking at him pleadingly, and bit his lip "... Super Mario?"
There was silence. Then a snort, Mario's grunt as he hid his face in his hands, and finally, the laughter of the Green Thunder.
"Nnnng, pfff, Ha-ha-ha! Super Mario? Are you serious?!" With a smile from ear to ear, he watched with delight as the lower one's ears turned red, throwing him into another fit of laughter. "No way! Ha-ha-ha!"
The little inhabitants of the Kingdom did not understand what the joke was, honestly. "What's so funny?" Asked Jonathan, defensively.
"And he still asks!" Exclaimed L holding his stomach, his face turning crimson and his eyes watering. "Oh, this is great! I'm already seeing you hero, coming into the scene, Super Marioooooo, to the rescueeeee! Hahahahaha!" Mario grunted irritably and looked at Toad as if he had betrayed him in the worst way.
"Why? Why the hell did you have to tell him?"
The Toadstool really didn't understand anything.
Dreamsdeep
Mario trembles slightly, watching cautiously the strange place where he is. Dreambert, floating next to him, presses his lips and remains silent, feeling the oppression of the atmosphere cut off his breath.
"We'd better get moving soon..." He looks around suspiciously. "The sooner we find the exit the sooner we'll be near Princess Peach."
"But... what about L?"
"He'll find us on his own, after all... this place is technically his unconscious..."
He takes refuge in his overalls again, and Mario takes one last look at where he came from before walking away. The place is certainly creepy, dark and very cold. The colors range from dark purple to black, red and what appears to be green lightning. A ceaselessly sinister music accompanies him on his journey, becoming louder and louder as he goes deeper, and with a chill he cannot help but think of that haunted mansion where he was imprisoned.
"Why do I feel so empty?"
"Stop! Don't leave me alone!"
Mario stops in his tracks and looks around. The voices were fleeting, but the strange thing is that while one was low, the other was higher, like that of a small child. Were there more people in this place? He couldn't see anyone...
"Mario, we must continue." The pillow prince reminds him. Shaking his head, the hero continues.
"Who are you? Why can't you leave me alone?"
"What do I do now? I'm all alone..."
"She was right... the world is a piece of shit."
The hero in red begins to walk more slowly, looking nervously everywhere as the voices stop being whispers and turn into screams.
"I'm not pathetic! I'm the Green Thunder and I'll make sure you never forget it!"
"Heh...useless...do you think you can catch me? Me?"
"I don't need a name... I'm invisible, faster than lightning. But if you want to... call me Mr. L"
He sighs shakily, his breath turning to smoke at the low temperatures that were beginning to be felt. He remembers Dreambert's words, and thinks that if this is L's unconscious... then are these his thoughts?
"Tsk. Stupid Hero."
"What do I have to do to make him go away?"
"He's not... such an idiot, after all..."
He lets out a squeal of surprise when flashes of blurry images pass in front of his eyes. They're distorted, without any consistency, but the shape, however fuzzy, he recognizes as his brother's.
"Mario..."
He swallows with effort, continuing walking as more and more shapes appear around him.
"Mario..."
"Mario."
There, in the distance. A light. His heart beats with excitement, and he takes up speed to run straight to it.
"MARIO!"
He stops abruptly, the image of his brother, sharper and more tangible than before, presenting itself to him with a solemn expression.
"Hero... if you go forward there will be no turning back."
He stares at him, as if considering him. He can't quite understand the emotions that glow in his eyes, and though it takes his breath away to see for the first time that hint of vulnerability in those blue-green eyes (since when did they change so much?) Mario knows he doesn't have much time to waste.
"Who knows what you'll find beyond that light." He goes on without regard, severe as he is. "There will be dangers and... maybe... more than you expect to find."
The one in red clenches his fists, his gaze hardening like steel. He knows, he's always known. And now more than ever...
"HELP ME!"
...he knows he can't stop.
L knows it too. He sighs heavily as he sees determination shining like fire in those blue orbs, and he steps aside.
"So be it, then." Mario nods hard, and walks until he feels the heat of that ray of light. "But...brother..."
Mario gasps softly, stopping. He turns to look at him, incredulous, stunned, but the green thief stands with his arms crossed, avoiding his gaze.
"You must know... that even if I will always follow you..." His heart beats loudly, his hands shaking slightly, not realizing that the light is beginning to engulf him. "What you discover later on..."
He is blinded for brief moments, and feels his body float away, the voice of his younger brother disappearing in a whisper.
"...may change everything between us."
Agreements.
Sometimes, Mario and L don't understand each other. They feel that they speak another language and every gesture and reason is alien to what they're used to.
But on nights like these, with the moonlight bathing everything and the stars illuminating the sky, the Hero in red and the Thief in green are kept in a comforting silence, in a companionship that fills them and makes them feel at peace.
And that is more than enough.

Hope you enjoy it! (I'm still learning how to write in english, be patient with me, please :D)
Anyone who guesses which drabbles used references and from what movie they are, can give me a word for a drabble, or if they want an specific idea I may be able to actually write it.
