Author's Note from Mat49324: Well, I've returned for my 12th one-shot since my return to Fanfiction in summer 2019. Last time, we had the spies take the Ice Challenge again in Totally Ice Cold... Again! and I had assistance from The Blue Time Ranger at the time. Well, I'll be having his assistance for this new one-shot as well. In this particular one, I had a vision of a certain spy who hasn't done what Alex and Clover have done yet. What's going to happen? Check out the summary. For now, here's The Blue Time Ranger if there's anything he'd like to say.

Author's Note from The Blue Time Ranger: Man, what I wouldn't give for it to be summer again, especially considering that over here, winter has officially struck back with super-cold temperatures and OVER EIGHTEEN INCHES OF SNOW IN LESS THAN A WEEK ...yeah, can you tell I'm kinda cold? Well, then let's warm up with a one-shot about surfing! ROLL IT!

Title: Surfin' Sam-ari

Summary: After Alex had a bad encounter with surfing, and Clover got the last seat in Surfology at Mali-U, Sam realizes she's yet to try surfing out for real. Sam has some semi-experience with certain gadgets used courtesy of W.O.O.H.P., but can she surf for real? Read and find out. Enjoy.

2:01 P.M. – Malibu University

On a bright Friday afternoon, Sam was just leaving her advanced physics class because it had just ended. As for the other spies, Clover was in Surfology, Alex had a shift at the Mali-U Café, Britney was in her Paleontology class, Nick was out picking up some food for his own, and Mat was "holding the fort" back at their penthouse in West Coast Hall.

"I wonder what everyone has in mind after Alex's shift ends," Sam wondered to nobody in particular.

She wore her yellow spaghetti strap dress and had her books under her arm. Sam had a shift at the café herself before her advanced physics class began, and her class was the last order of business for her today. Alex had her shift start after Sam's ended.

2:10 P.M. – The Spies' Penthouse

"I have a paper to write on Max Planck," Sam told herself. "But at least I have three weeks to think about it."

She entered the penthouse to see Mat was sitting on the couch having just finished his lunch. He wore slacks and a 2010-throwback Supercross shirt that was green, white, and black, and the back read "Weimer 12," which signified 2010 Supercross Lites West champ, Jake Weimer.

"Hey, Mat-honey," Sam stated.

"Hiya, babe," Mat greeted back as they shared a hug and kiss.

"I'm guessing Clover's still in Surfology?" Sam wondered.

"As far as I know, she is," Mat answered. "I just finished my lunch and re-watched another Supercross from my childhood myself."

"Nice," Sam quipped.

That was when Sam heard a chime on her phone. It was a text from Clover.

"Clover's gonna stay down at the Mali-U Beach after her Surfology class," Sam told Mat.

"You wanna go there and blow off a little steam?" Mat asked.

Something else seemed to be on Sam's mind after reading Clover's text. "Yeah, let's go," she told her steady boyfriend.

Sam got out her X-Powder while Mat went to retrieve his DS. Secretly, Sam wanted to try to learn to surf, but she remembered Alex had to be rescued in Hawaii after the wave Alex was on got too high for her, and Clover was in her Surfology class. She started looking through her swimsuits to see which one was best; unknown to her, Mat came out all set to go.

"Something wrong?" Mat asked, noticing something seemed to be on Sam's mind.

"Oh no," Sam chuckled nervously. "I was... just... wondering what bathing suit I should pick."

"You want my opinion?" Mat quipped. "Your classic one always caught my eye – green or pink."

"All right, I'll think it over," Sam replied with a smile.

She then felt she shouldn't keep this urge to learn to surf a secret at all; Mat IS originally from Hawaii after all, so surfing should be easy to explain... or would it be? Sam also had some semi-experience with other gadgets like the head-for-cover hoverboards, and even the jet pack backpacks to an extent.

"Oh, and Mat," Sam spoke up as they got ready to leave. "You're from Hawaii after all... do you think you can tell me how to surf?"

That caught Mat by surprise. "I'll be honest, Sam," he told his girlfriend. "I may be from Hawaii, but I have never tried it!"

"Really?!" Sam exclaimed.

"I'm afraid so," Mat answered. "But that doesn't mean I don't know how to do it. I've seen it enough to know how to surf."

"I guess any experience is better than none, huh?" Sam laughed.

"There is something else you should know, Sammy," Mat then told her. "Back in Hawaii, you won't see a surfer in a wetsuit – they just wear their swimwear. Board shorts for guys, bikinis for girls, but I have seen some girls in onesies for surfing."

That makes a lot of sense, Sam thought as she inwardly decided which swimsuit to wear.

There was another text alert; it was from Alex.

"Oh, Alex said she'll be there after her shift's over in an hour," Mat read.

"Great," Sam smiled as she walked hand-in-hand with Mat to the Mali-U Beach.

"I'll bet Nick's there, too," Mat stated. "Along with Britney."

2:27 P.M. – Mali-U Beach

"Do you see Clover anywhere?" Sam asked Mat. "Or perhaps Nick or Britney?"

Some other students were entering and leaving the beach area. Mat looked on and noticed Nick was eating a snack while Clover was wrapping up her Surfology class. Blaine was also nearby wrapping up volleyball practice. Sam and Mat did wardrobe changes before setting foot on the sands. Alex and Britney had not shown up yet.

"Hey, bro," Nick remarked when he noticed Mat.

"What's up?!" Mat greeted. "Sam has some news herself – she wants to try surfing."

"Really?" Nick asked.

"I can tell her how it's done – save for the fact I haven't tried it for real," Mat went on.

"And I'm grateful he is," Sam's voice sweetly replied as Mat turned around to see her.

It turned out that Sam had donned her classic green swimsuit. Never goes out of style, honestly, Sam thought.

"Surfing is just something that's always eluded me compared to Alex and Clover," Sam admitted. "They have at least some experience with it, so..."

"Be lucky you never had to suffer how I did," Nick laughed.

"Yikes, that bad, bro?" Mat asked.

"Let me just put it this way," Nick chuckled. "My family and I actually went surfing the first weekend we started living in Beverly Hills, and you all know that, back in my teenage days, I couldn't swim for jack or crap. My cousin Dawn actually dared me to try surfing and, well... it didn't end too well for me."

"Oof, that sounds like pain," Clover giggled as she and Blaine walked up to join them.

"It was worse that I got buried under a few waves before I could get back to the beach and tell Dawn 'I am never doing that again'," Nick quipped. "I'm just glad that both time and W.O.O.H.P. helped me learn how to actually swim."

"So, I heard from a little birdie that you want to learn how to surf, huh, Sammy?" Clover asked.

"Yeah, I'm finally dipping my toe in that wave," Sam answered. "Even though Mat hasn't done it either, he knows enough about it to be my sorta teacher."

"Hey, I'm gonna help, too," Clover responded. "Since I'm taking a Surfology class, after all."

"Thanks," Sam stated. "Now let's actually get this thing going."

Naturally, Alex and Britney appeared on the beach right as everything was getting started.

"Oh, hey, what's up here?" Alex asked as Nick jogged up to give her a kiss.

"Well, Mat and Clover are teaching Sam how to surf," Nick explained. "From the looks of things, the first lesson's going pretty well."

Britney and Alex got a look at Sam learning how to balance on the surfboard.

"The main thing is to keep your knees bent and have your arms out like you're balancing on a tightrope," Mat explained.

"Mm-hmm," Clover added. "Plus you put your leash on your ankle to make sure you don't get separated from your board."

"Okay then," Sam merely replied.

"The water's a whole different ball game though," Mat went on. "But as long as you look like this..."

He got on Clover's surfboard, bent his knees, and moved his arms outward in a balance-like motion as if he were on a tightrope.

"You should be okay, babe," Mat continued. "You can look at it like boogie-boarding, except you're standing up."

"Mm-hmm," Clover nodded. "Don't try to stand still because you're more likely to fall off."

Clover gave Sam some more pointers before she loaned her surfboard to Sam, and she and Mat started to go out to sea with Sam.

"One thing you gotta remember is that..." Nick quipped, only to see exactly what he was about to say.

During Sam's attempt to apply what Mat had told her about balance, a random wave crashed down and dunked both Sam and Mat.

"...waves around here can get very unpredictable," Nick sighed.

"You learned that lesson the hard way, too, huh?" Alex laughed.

Sam shook her head to get some of the drops out of her hair. "That was... quite the experience," Sam stated.

"Waves around here tend to do whatever the heck they want," Clover giggled. "But I think you're doing pretty good for your first attempt, Sammy!"

"Let's keep going, then," Mat responded.

"I'll get this surfing thing yet," Sam proclaimed, ready for her next lesson.

("Surfin' Safari" by The Beach Boys plays)

"That's the spirit, Sammy," Clover quipped. "Don't give up."

"Jeff Emig didn't give up trying to stop Jeremy McGrath's win streak in Supercross 1996, after all," Mat pointed out.

Sam and Clover chuckled as Sam gave it another go on the next wave.

"You got this, Sammy!" Alex called from the shoreline.

"I'm impressed she's giving surfing a shot," Britney replied. "Didn't you have a bad experience with it, Alex?"

"Let's just say that the cute surfer guy I fell for then was not who I thought he was," Alex groaned. "That was also our first experience with Jerry's 'tests'."

"I feel ya, girlfriend," Clover replied.

Meanwhile, Sam was eyeing the next wave while Mat and Clover watched from a relatively close distance. She saw one coming that was a good size.

Okay, come on, Sam, you can do this... Sam thought to herself.

As the wave started to pick up in length, Sam looked back and got in position. She rode the wave and began to balance her very best to ride the wave back to shore.

"Looks good," Mat started.

"Balance it, Sam!" Clover shouted.

Sam moved her arms out and bent her knees like she was taught. Unfortunately, around 10 seconds later, she fell off the surfboard. Clover and Mat looked skyward and chuckled a bit.

"Almost," Mat commented. "She's getting there."

Meanwhile, Sam had resurfaced and got back on Clover's surfboard completely soaked from head to toe. "That didn't work out well," she groaned.

Luckily, another wave was coming.

"Hopefully third time's the charm," Clover stated to Mat.

As Sam patiently awaited that wave to come, she got in a balanced position and rode the wave rather well. Clover and Mat were pretty surprised.

"If she nails at least two or three waves masterfully, I'm buying her lunch tomorrow," Mat laughed.

Meanwhile, Sam was still riding the wave pretty well... until she wiped out and splashed in the ocean again.

"Getting there," Clover commented.

Meanwhile, back at the shoreline, Nick, Alex, and Britney were having a good time watching Sam learn how to surf.

"She's getting better bit by bit," Nick quipped.

"I'm surprised I haven't seen you surfing, Nick," Britney wondered.

"Might I refer you to the fact that I used to not be able to swim for jack or beans, or that I had a bad wipeout on the first and only time I've ever gone surfing, no thanks to my cousin?" Nick proclaimed.

"It sounds like a lot to take in," Alex replied.

"I admit, maybe I should try surfing out myself after Sam gets it figured out," Britney quipped.

"Don't give up the ship, Sam!" Mat called out.

Sam caught another wave after a bit, and this time, she fully concentrated on what to do.

I'm gonna nail this! Sam thought.

"You think she's got this one?" Mat asked Clover.

"I hope so," Clover quipped. "Though I'm surprised you said you never tried surfing out, Mat..."

"I told you, Clover," Mat replied. "Motocross is my life. On paper, I could surf, but DOING IT is a whole different story."

With that, he turned back to Nick, Alex, and Britney. Blaine was coming over to the others to find out what all the hubbub was about.

"What's going on?" Blaine asked.

"Sam's trying surfing for real," Britney answered. "I think she's getting the hang of things... or could be..."

A few more from the Mali-U Beach Volleyball Team started checking things out, too.

Meanwhile, something came over Sam as if she were on the head-for-cover hoverboards as a spy, while she was waiting for another wave.

I can do this, Sam thought. I'm not going to let a stupid board conquer me!

After a few seconds to adjust her balance, Sam started riding the next wave that came by, unaware of the small crowd that had gathered to watch her.

Focused on the task ahead, Sam continued to ride the wave rather well, even surfing underneath the wave for a couple seconds.

"Now's she just styling," Nick laughed. "That was right out of Lilo and Stitch."

Deciding to try and nail one last wave before she went back to the beach, Sam quickly got on and rode along until the wave was high enough, and while she was riding, she managed to catch a glimpse of Mat and the others watching her from the shoreline.

By the time the wave had finished, Sam had made her way back to the shoreline, to applause from the people that had arrived to watch her as well as a flying hug from her boyfriend.

"That was amazing, Sam!" Mat exclaimed.

"Aw, Mat," Sam giggled. "I think I did pretty well for my first actual attempt at surfing."

"You did well enough that I'm buying you lunch tomorrow," Mat stated.

"Way to go, Sammy!" Alex exclaimed as the rest of the spies joined in to make it a group hug. "You killed it out there!"

"A few more lessons like that, and you'll be stylin' on those waves in no time!" Clover laughed.

As the spies returned to their penthouse, Sam glanced back at Nick.

"Hey, so... Nick, you said something about a surfing fail earlier?" Sam giggled.

"...I totally should have seen that coming," Nick laughed.

"Well? Come on, Nick, spill the beans!" Alex proclaimed.

Realizing that there was no way out of this one, Nick reluctantly began telling his tale.

"So, my cousin Dawn actually dared me to get on a surfboard, and, well..."

Totally Spies: Surfin' Sam-ari

~The End~

Final Note from Mat49324: And my 12th one-shot has been completed. This was a good one to write on since Clover and Alex got to surf for real, and Sam never did. Not counting any gadgets, how many of you noticed Sam never tried surfing before? Anyway, Nick and I hope you enjoyed this one-shot, and we certainly enjoyed constructing this. Even though this is a one-shot, now we can say that Sam has tried surfing as of now (haha). You might figure that my one-shots are centered around S5 and S6, and some "Easter Eggs" are found like Sam's swimsuit she wears – specifically her green one-piece that I still feel to this day that she should've kept from S4 on – even to college at Mali-U. Anyway, what's done is done and TS unfortunately isn't coming back to TV for a brand-new season again like before. Anyway, join us again for our next project, Jealousy Jaunt, and our future projects down the line. We just posted chapter 1 of Jealousy Jaunt today, so hopefully you will leave reviews there, and here, too. Whatever my 13th one-shot will be on is up in the air. Stay tuned for that, and the final two chapters of Jealousy Jaunt as well. So long, everyone!
