"Was an abandoned park really necessary?" Yuri scrunched her nose as the stench of garbage and rotting foods flooded her sense of smell.
"Well, it is the most suspicious place to meet which makes it less suspicious," A male voice chuckled.
"Føniks! It's not funny! I'm exhausted. The commission is on my ass more so than usual because of Hawks," Yuri whined, her body slumping into a park bench that was still intact. "I'm so looking forward to the next couple of days off!"
"They are more than well deserved." Strong arms wrapped around her, pulling her into a warm chest. "Perhaps, we can have a moment to ourselves. The army is settling down and I'll have more free time away from them."
"You like the attention and you know it!" A raspy chuckle grazed her ear as lips brushed against her cheek. Yuri giggled as his warm breath ghosted over her neck. "Now, what is this meeting about? You made it sound urgent."
"I've had a breakthrough," Føniks said, handing her a small file. "A body was discovered by the Liberation Army. It has the markings of the Commission as well as All for One."
"That's huge!" Yuri's eyes widened. "Physical evidence! This is what we have been waiting for!"
"I managed to free the body without drawing attention to myself but we never imagined something like this," Føniks explained, "How do we want to go forward? If the wrong people catch wind of this then the body is all but gone."
"I don't…" Yuri furrowed her brow as she thought. What could they do? They couldn't very well go to the police with the body. They would both be detained for suspicious activity and the police most likely wouldn't be able to do much. "That's it! Gran Torino is working closely with a police force who, to my knowledge, is an entirely separate entity. An anonymous tip and a well-placed location could be the right move."
"We could put it just outside of the forest, near a commission training facility. It would bring enough attention to it without looking too obvious. Bury it a small distance away but disturb the dirt to make it look like some kids found it." Føniks nodded in agreement. "That could work but do you know how to get into contact with them?"
"I can find out how." Yuri grinned. "Hawks is rarely around anymore which leaves his computer more open to searches. No one thinks twice about it either."
"You really have slithered your way completely in," Føniks laughed, "That's my little raven."
"Don't get sappy!"
"You started it!" Yuri pouted as she glared at the man.
"I have done no such thing!"
"I've missed you," Føniks whispered, bumping his nose into the crook of her neck. His sunglasses felt cold against her skin as he continued to nuzzle her. "Missed your scent too."
"Føniks," Yuri breathed, a flush working its way onto her face. "Now, is not the time."
"It's never the time," Føniks grunted, "Best make the most of the time we have."
"Føniks now is not-" Yuri cut off at the sound of her phone ringing. She looked at the screen with trepidation as Hawks' name displayed itself.
"That bird really is putting his claws into you." Føniks tightened his grip around her waist. "One would think he owned you or something."
"What are you going on about? He's my boss." Yuri furrowed her brows at the out of character statement. "He might be calling because of paperwork or something. Why does it have to be personal?"
"He's been keeping you locked in your tower since he discovered how the Commission treats its employees."
"Wait a minute… Are you?" Yuri forced him to face her. "Are you jealous?"
"Of course not!" Føniks huffed, a light shade of pink dusting across his cheeks. "Why would I be jealous? I have you. He doesn't"
"You so totally are!" Yuri giggled as she pointed to his cheeks. "Wh-"
"You should answer that before he gets suspicious," Føniks said, walking back into the shadows. "I doubt he'll believe all your lies."
"Asshole," Yuri growled as she watched him disappear. The man needed to get his head on straight.
"What?" She snapped.
"Whoa! I was just wondering where the order forms went before your weekend officially started," Hawks placated. Yuri could almost see him raising his arms in defense.
"My weekend has officially started," Yuri reasoned, "They should be in your inbox. All they need is your signature and then to be sent out. Otherwise, they're all done."
"Yuri, are you alright? You sound off."
"I'm fine. Just ready for a couple of days to relax."
"Alright, but if you need anything let me know." His voice told Yuri that he didn't believe her and if she was being honest, she wouldn't be relaxing anyway.
"I will. Have a good night, Hawks." Yuri didn't wait for a response before hanging up. She trudged back to the apartment complex and was pleased to find no one suspicious outside. With Lilith on the loose, there was no telling how long these peaceful nights would last. The night was quiet as Yuri stepped into her cold empty apartment. Digging through her coat closet she brought out an old cardboard box. They would need to identify the body.
Yuri flipped through the endless files, trying to match the description with one of the kids they knew to have been part of the training regimen. She was coming up short but there were so many files. Yuri tried her hardest but making her way through one box took all night and she only had half the whole set. Føniks had the other half and it seemed he would be the one with the kid's file.
Yuri huffed, brushing her hair out of her face as she tried to settle the matter of what to do with this freetime. No mandatory meetings, no work for the Commission. She had nothing. Hobbies weren't something Yuri ever thought she would need but maybe it was time to start one? She curled up on her couch, her hand caressing the locket that fell to her chest. A knock on her sliding door had Yuri leaping to her feet. She eased onto a defensive stance but when nothing came from the noise she crept slowly toward the balcony. A small bag colored in a fiery red sat innocently in the middle of the pavement. Her plants that towered around the fencing of the balcony sat undisturbed and untouched. Yuri hesitantly opened the bag, carefully peeling back the tape that held it closed. Inside laid a velvet case. A case she recognized. Yuri smiled softly as she held the hairpin in her hands. He really was something else.
