The walk back from the park is leisurely one now that Winter has given way to Spring and it's finally warm and bright enough to spend their hours outdoors. Much of the town seemingly had the same idea and made the best of the weather, as the park was jam-packed and barely a spot of grass went uncovered by picnic blankets.
Mercifully, their spot at the gazebo is still relatively obscure and they got to enjoy some undisturbed peace, quiet enough for them to hear the waves lapping in the distance. With the pressures of work and day to day life, they don't get moments like these often so the relish it
Lynn hooks her arm through Priya's as they make their way through the alley on route home. The narrow gap between buildings is robbed of sunlight, making the place feel hazy and sinister.
"Do you want to stop for dinner somewhere or just head home?" Priya asks, mentally scanning the contents of their fridge.
"We should eat out, I'm pretty hung-"
Lynn's cut off from a yelp from Priya as a mugger grabs her handbag without any struggle or fuss and runs off into the distance.
Without a single thought for her safety or any thought at all, Lynn takes off sprinting after the thief. Her hair falls from its ponytail and her sunglasses fall to the ground as she runs, but none of it registers. She's powered by adrenaline and her single-minded goal of getting Priya's purse back.
The thief runs out into a busy street, but she doesn't lose sight of him. He's distinct in his all-black ensemble in a mix of seasonally dressed passers-by. Her endless afternoons spent training in the gym with Kim are finally bearing fruit because she's faster than him, not by much, but she has stamina.
He rushes into a group of tourists who, caught up in their own photography and sightseeing, don't move out of the way to let him pass, slowing him down just enough for Lynn to catch up with him.
Still not thinking, she leaps forwards and tackles him to the ground, and Priya's bag flies from his grip. She pushes him face forward into the ground and twists an arm behind his back. "This is a citizen's arrest."
By the time Priya catches up to them, sweaty and out of breath, bystanders have already called the police but Lynn hasn't moved from the arm lock she has the thief in.
"Oh my god, Lynn, what were you thinking? I can't believe you caught him." Priya starts to ramble, all her thoughts pour out unfiltered as she stares ahead in disbelief.
Finally, a police officer arrives and Lynn lets go of the mugger and hands him over. Before they can be taken back to the station to give their statements, Priya wraps Lynn in a hug, kissing her, thanking her, and keeping her safe from harm. She only pulls away when the police are ready to leave.
"How is my wife more badass than me?" She asks, half laughing but mostly impressed.
Lynn squeezes Priya's hand. "Because she learned from the best."
