Maura glanced up when Jane walked back into the room. "I'm going to take a quick shower." The brunette mumbled and disappeared into the bathroom without looking at her, afraid that the blonde would see her puffy eyes. Jane desperately tried not to show how hard the fight with Gabriel had hit her.
After yet another fruitless exchange with Frost, she ate dinner in total silence and just focused onto her job. Mr. and Mrs. Jolly were having fun with the others from their table. The whole thing began to feel useless to Jane. How could they be murderers? It drove her mad to sit here where she could literally do nothing but wait while she needed to solve some severe problems at home.
She realized how tense she was when she jumped as a hand reached for her knee under the table, squeezing it gently. Turning her head, she glanced directly into warm hazel eyes which were puzzled. Maura's lips were curled up into a small smile and Jane smiled back automatically, knowing that the smile didn't reach her eyes.
The brunette averted her eyes quickly and seemingly focused on the food on the plate, which was fairly untouched and sighed. There was another squeeze to her knee and Jane nodded slightly into Maura's direction to say that it was okay before looking back at the suspects.
She had to be good at something she thought. And if it wasn't in her private life it had to be at least at her job. She was glad though that the hand stayed were it was. The warmth of it spread over her leg and finally through her body. When Maura made an attempt to pull it back a few minutes later, Jane reached under the table to hold it in place. Now her hand was resting over Maura's and she almost gasped in surprise when the blonde entwined fingers with hers.
This time, when she glanced back at the blonde, her smile was real and sparkling up her eyes. And it was Maura who nodded this time. Janes mouth felt dry all of a sudden, so she reached for her wineglass to take a big sip.
R&I
Jane had never seen anybody celebrate the nightly routine like Maura did. The blonde spent what seemed to be forever in the bathroom. And once back in the room she used all sorts of creams for her face and hands.
Jane thought that Maura's face was beautiful without makeup while watching her in awe. Sharing a room brought some intimacy which none of them seemed to be shy about. It was rather exciting. Earlier that day, the brunette had observed the blonde filling the nightstand with her stuff. Everything was tidy and had its order.
When Jane glanced at her own nightstand though, she could only see chaos. She grabbed for her phone, wanting to wish Marcella a good night even if it meant that she had to deal with her mother. Since the toddler had come into her life, she had never spent one night without hearing the girls voice.
But for the first time her mother didn't pick up when she called. Jane rubbed her eyes and gave a deep sigh. She noticed how Maura was studying her with a worried face. "I'm okay." She mumbled calling herself a liar.
"No, you're not." Maura replied calmly. "And its normal. Your family is shutting you out and it must hurt."
"It does." Jane finally admitted without looking at her.
"I just wish I had experience with comforting people." Maura whispered and Jane glanced up with furrowed eyebrows.
"You do comfort me." She said firmly. Maura gave her a small smile.
"Is this the time were friends get drunk and eat ice cream?" the blonde asked and Jane chuckled at her cuteness.
"I guess so. Never did that because I don't see the point though." She replied and Maura snorted.
"There is nothing wrong with having a bit of fun. Maybe you feel better then?" she offered to Jane who still chuckled.
"Okay. Bring it on then." She said. "I declare the minibar open."
Maura didn't waste any time and slipped out of bed to walk over to the tiny fridge hidden behind a cupboard door. "What do you prefer?" her muffled voice came out of the cooler under the TV. Bending forward she gave Jane a good look at her butt and Jane gasped at the sight.
"Ah, never mind, I'll bring everything." Maura said and did so. A huge pile of bottles landed on the bed between them. Jane still believed that there was no use in getting drunk because it wouldn't make her problems go away.
But making Maura happy with it made it worth while she decided and chose one of the small bottles which contained Whisky. The brand was unknown, and she hoped that it tasted better than the beer.
"Cheers!" she said as their bottles came together with a nice ringing sound.
"Salut!" Maura giggled with sparkling eyes. And this made Jane feel indeed better.
"As a friend I have to tell you that you have a nice ass." A slightly drunken Jane confided in Maura after the second bottle. The doc giggled. "Thank you, detective. As a friend I have to say that you have an impressive body. And your bone structure is incredible."
The brunette who was about to choose her next drink rose an eyebrow at Maura. "Oh my, thank you doc. I can honestly say that I never got such an extraordinary compliment."
"What? I mean nobody ever told you how gorgeous you are?" Maura exclaimed in disbelieve.
"Not the way you did." Jane laughed.
"It was about time then." Maura decided and led the third bottle to her mouth.
By the forth bottle the topic of pet names came up and Jane whined at the same time with Maura because neither of them was really fond of pet names.
"Tell me what's your husbands pet name is for you." The brunette asked Maura who almost dropped the bottle. "I'm not married." She stated.
"Oh, come on, Frost said that you are married. Its in the system." Jane nudged her friend who gasped.
"It must be a mistake then. If I was married, I would know, right? I was engaged yes. To Garrett Fairfield but I broke up with him." She explained to Jane who looked amused at her because of her antics.
Then Maura's face suddenly changed from indignant to a shocked expression. "Oh shit!" she swore and it amused Jane even more to hear such swear words out of her mouth.
"What is it?" she asked curiously. But Maura was deep in thought and rambled to herself: "It cant be… can it? No, I don't think so.."
"What is it?" Jane gently nudged her into the side while repeating the question with a wink. "I think… I cant remember… but there was a night in Las Vegas. I will have to call my Lawyer." Drunken Maura exclaimed, already reaching for her phone.
Jane gently pulled the docs hand into hers with a giggle. "Not now. You are uhm drunk. You'd probably better do it tomorrow." The brunette said with a drunken grin. "Oh yes, you are right." Maura giggled. "Imagine me being married and I even don't know it."
"I'm more shocked that you got married in Las Vegas. You don't seem to be the type." Jane laughed.
Maura gave her an unreadable expression. "I lost control once."
"Hey, no need to defend yourself. Believe me, I did my share of stupid stuff too." Jane regretted the words the moment they were out. Because now of course Maura was curious. "What stupid stuff?" she asked with a grin.
"Uhm, where do I begin?" the brunette made a thoughtful face.
"At the beginning?" Maura laughed poking her.
They were still holding hands as they let themselves back to lean against the headboard of the bed.
"I cant remember, but the point is that we all make mistakes." She vaguely said and received another poke from Maura's free hand.
"This is why I said we cant kiss again." Maura suddenly mumbled and Jane looked at her.
"You think that it could be a mistake?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. "That I could be a mistake?" she sounded a bit hurt now.
"No, its just that…." Maura thought for a while. "I like you Jane. A lot. It's just that I don't want to destroy this."
Jane rolled her eyes and sighed. "Destroy this? I can't follow you Maur." She said, sounding a lot more sober now. Maura had said that she liked her a lot. So, it wasn't just her. Her heart was pounding hard against her ribcage while studying the blonde.
"See, you are the first person who calls me Maur or a nice name in general. You do that stuff. Its hard to explain. I'm a brain person. But you do a lot of stuff which makes me feel…"
"uncomfortable?" Jane suggested with furrowed eyebrows.
"No, not uncomfortable. But all the feelings scare me, and I don't know how to handle them."
Jane made a pensive hmmm and both averted their eyes to their linked hands. Maura pulled hers away as if she had been burned.
