Mrs. Cane gave both women a warning look when they walked into the breakfast room. Jane had tossed and turned most of the night and ignored her as she wasn't in the mood for mysterious games. The next few days were spent in this manner.
If she and Maura talked during the following days, it was only about the case. The brunette thought a lot about what Mrs. Cane place in the puzzle was. Was she part of the group of suspects or was there another party?
It was during their last week when they were at another museum where she caught Mrs. Cane shooting her a glance. She replied the small smile of the old woman by one of her owns and padded on through the exhibition, always on the look out for danger. Maybe it was for their best. She thought about how things were between Maura and her.
Once back in Boston she would go to a lawyer to clear things up. Then they had to get rid of the house – unless Gabriel wanted to keep it. She didn't for sure. Jane wanted a new start and she had spent filling the gaps of silence between her and the doc by planning it.
The group behaved like usual. Only 4 more days in this madness and then Jane would be back at the precinct. She couldn't wait. Only 4 more awkward nights of resisting the temptation to get closer to the doc. And with that she didn't only mean sex but more the temptation to love her. She could do that she thought. She was determined to follow her plan.
The brunette caught Maura staring from the corner of her eyes while she was observing the group with eagle eyes. She realized that the doc was even staring at her. It was obvious that she was miserable. Not now, Maur. We can discuss this later. Please! She pleaded silently in her mind.
There was a real threat that one of them would end up with a poisonous bullet in their body and Jane wasn't keen on that. Not now. She pleaded again. If there was a god, she hoped that he would help her or them to come out alive.
"Just act as if you were really vacationing. Your observing is to obvious." Mrs. Cane stated after suddenly appearing next to her.
"What's going on? Tell me." Jane answered. But Mrs. Cane had disappeared as quick as she had come. The brunette shook her head. Her hand checked for the weapon which she had hidden in a holster on her ankle. She feigned to scratch herself there and saw a very familiar pair of high heels approaching her. Her eyes followed the body in front of her upwards, noticing sexy legs, an elegant skirt and blouse and a red face.
"This is so frustrating!" Maura whispered fiercely. "We are not getting anywhere."
"I know. This is a hard case." Jane stated in a deep, low voice while glancing around to see if anyone was following their conversation. There was no other person in their vicinity, but several pair of eyes were on them.
"That's not what I meant, Jane." Maura said sternly and the brunette realized that this was about them.
"I miss you! I miss our talks." The doc confided. Jane suddenly noticed a suspicious movement behind her friend and reacted by pulling her down to the ground. There was a faint whistle passing over their head and then silence.
"Jane!" Maura exclaimed. "My shoes. They are ruined."
"I'll buy you a new pair." The brunette mumbled absentmindedly while her eyes registering a figure turning around. It wasn't Mrs. Cane. It was a man. A man with a walking stick. Unfortunately, she couldn't see him clear enough from her position to recognize who it was.
Jane jumped from the floor to chase him, but when she rounded the corner, she only saw their group staring at her in surprise. Every second man in the group had a walking stick she noticed and groaned.
She ran back to Maura to help her up. Then she walked towards the end of the room to look for the object which could have killed her friend. It didn't take her long to find the small bullet.
"Look what we have here." She mumbled with a smirk. "Do you have some gloves on you?" Maura, who was clearly in shock, handed her a pair so that Jane could pick up the small piece of metal. "Good, because I have the evidence bag. This vacation is taking a turn I don't like." Jane sounded mischievously. "At first it was boring, but now there is a little bit too much excitement for my taste."
"What are you going to do? Put them all into jail?" Maura asked.
"I would like to do so, believe me. But this is not in my jurisdiction. And without proof we cant really report them to the police." The brunette grunted. "Besides, have you ever seen a police officer questioning or investigating one of the two murders which have occurred since we are here? It seems as if they weren't interested in the case or us at all."
The detective then turned to her friend, knowing that Maura wasn't going to like what she was about to say. "I highly recommend you fly home. This is too dangerous for you here."
The doc huffed in shock and offense as expected. "I'm not going to go home!"
"You should, Maur. It is really dangerous for you here." Jane held up the bag with the bullet to make her point. "Someone just tried to shoot you, or poison you or whatever. I am not going to let you die under my watch! Go home. Be safe."
"I'm certainly not going to go home and leave you alone to this." The blonde shrieked.
"You will and I can take care of myself. Im a detective. You are an ME. You are not trained for these situations as you mentioned the other day yourself." Jane snapped.
"You cant force me to leave." The doc stomped with her feet and Jane raised an eyebrow.
Janes anger disappeared quickly though when she saw a sad look on Maura's face, and she began to plead. "Please Maur. I can protect myself. But I don't know if I can protect you. Go home please. I couldn't life with the fact that you died under my watch. I like you. I want you to be safe."
"You like me huh? I have the feeling that you are evading me Jane! Like everyone else did in my life. But I have to congratulate you because no one ever pulled through with me as long as you did."
Jane pulled her hand through her hair and snapped angrily. "This isn't all about you. Im different. I thought that I had made it clear. Don't put words into my mouth. But cant you see what happened? You told me that you wanted to be friends. I agreed because my life is messy enough. We had fun. But the truth is that friends don't sleep with each other!"
"Some do!" Maura stubbornly yelled back. Jane faltered a bit. "Not me." She replied with gritted teeth. Either I'm all in or away and its true for both: friendship or relationship."
"YOU Jane, you were the one who started seducing me the other night. How does that stick to your I'm all in? Tell me."
"I know and that's why I said that it cant happen again. I just cant. I apologized for it."
They both stared at each other like in a contest, both breathing hard after all the yelling. "Go home, Maur." Jane whispered before walking off towards the exit where the rest of the group was already waiting for the bus.
R&I
Jane panicked when she found her room empty upon walking out from the shower. She quickly rounded the bed and blew out some air when noticing that Maura's suitcases were still there. But then she caught her breath again. Where had the doc gone? A killer had tried to shoot her this afternoon. Had Maura really just walked out of the room?
A shadowy figure appeared behind the curtains and Jane almost fell to her knees when realizing that it was Maura who was outside on the balcony. The petite was pacing in circles in the small space.
"I'm going home tomorrow. Hope you can survive this." Maura snapped when Jane walked into the evening air.
"I'm sorry." The brunette said, making a helpless gesture with her hands. "You were good and did a great job. But you're really not safe here."
"Well, obviously SFPD has the same opinion. I'll be out of your way. Just have to pack my suitcases."
Jane hung her head, and she bit her lips. She desperately wanted to tell Maura how she was going to miss her. The blonde had become a vital part of her life over the past weeks and it oddly felt as if one of her limps was going to be amputated. She didn't say it though because Maura would only snap back and never believe her. Jane sadly nodded and padded back into the room.
She hated to see Maura pack her stuff and how all the creams and small things that were belonging to Maura disappeared from the nightstand or the counter. She felt like crying but she stayed brave. If they were meant to be their time would come. But she honestly didn't believe so. She swallowed hard and averted her eyes to her fidgeting hands.
"You can be pretty stubborn too, you know?" Jane felt the need to crack a joke. Maura paused throwing stuff into her suitcase and glanced at her. "And bossy." Jane tried to tease her in the hope that not all was lost.
But she shut up after receiving a deadly glare.
