Countdown to the finals
An hour later, still slightly out of breath from the hour of constant dancing and tweaking, the Glee kids were all gathered in the locker room. The girls were all wearing their sports clothes, but the guys were already in their full outfit. Coach Beiste was seated in front of the white board and let her gaze roam over the nine teens seated before her, five guys, four of which were really good players and four girls, one of which was a good sports woman. Beiste knew they weren't going to win, but at least they were going to play.
"Okay. I know we agreed that the girls will all remain lying down on the field, but I think it's still important for you to know the basics of football. Furthermore, I want you to be able to at least run in the padding. So for the next two days I'll explain the rules of the game and you'll get your football gear, get to know the range of motion and be able to do a sprint from one side of the football field to the other. So, in case something goes wrong, you'll be able to get away. Understood?"
"Yes coach."
"Guys, we will be practicing a couple of plays specifically designed for a minimum amount of players. I want you to do two extra long train sessions for tomorrow and Friday. Understood?"
"Yes coach." With that coach Beiste started explaining the rules of the game she loved so much.
With their extra long training sessions all the attention of the guys was turned to the game that Friday. Before he knew it Mike was packing his bag, carefully putting in all the things he would need. He would pick up Tina so they could drive to school together. He vividly remembered the conversation they had had when he had given her a backrub after training. He had once again asked her if she was sure. She had assured him for the umpteenth time that she wanted to do this. He had told her to stay down during the game. She hadn't really responded. He knew he , she seemed shy, but she didn't shy away from a challenge and she was active. She didn't like passively waiting for something. All that knowledge made him uneasy, especially since the tension he had felt that last game was back. Lingering in the back, but there none the less. "Tina, please stay down, regardless of what is happening. I couldn't live with myself if something would happen to you. Besides, your father would track me down and kill me." Tina had laughed, actually laughed: "He wouldn't Mike, he signed the consent."
"Well, he can be quite scary." Mike mumbled. "Tina, how am I going to concentrate on the game if I worry about you, possibly getting injured?"
"You are the schools resident ninja. You can do it." Mike had stopped the backrub and turned Tina to face him: "Tina, I'm serious, please tell me you will stay down." Tina had seen the worry in his eyes and had nodded: "If it means that much: yes, I'll stay down."
"Thank you."
"Now, continue with that fabulous backrub." Tina had laid down again.
"Yes, madam."
Mike still had to smile over their antics, but then returned to the present. "Mom, dad. I'm leaving." Mike waved to his parents, who were reading in the family room.
"Okay, son. We'll see you there."
"Have a good game." His mother came and gave him a kiss and his father nodded his encouragement. Mike waved and made his way to his car, bag slung over his shoulder.
