After feeding Marcella both women sat down onto the carpet in Maura's living room to play with the girl. By now the toddler could walk quite well and she sometimes made a point to walk between the adults who kept catching the giggling girl and covering her with kisses.

Maura made a great mother, Jane thought, somehow hoping that they would have a second child one day. Is this really me talking? She asked herself in surprise and stood when somebody rang the bell to their home.

"I'll have it." She said and placed a kiss on Maura's forehead. "It's probably Ma."

But it wasn't Angela who was waiting at the front door. It was Gabriel who smelled a lot like alcohol. Jane sighed. "Hey." She greeted him politely.

"Hey." He greeted her back with a smug grin. He had always talked about wanting to have a threesome during their marriage which made Jane suspect what he wanted. "Just out of curiosity." He said and Jane rolled her eyes. "Whatever it is Gabriel, its no." she dryly stated and watched his face falter.

"Why not? We are all adults? We could have a bit of fun together." He slightly slurred.

"First, because you are drunk. And second because I already told you that I'm not into it."

His face turned angry and Jane thought that he was becoming a pain in the ass. "You made me look ridiculous today." He snapped and Jane sighed. "Go home Gabriel. You are drunk." She said, getting tired of the ever-repeating conversations between them. She saw how unhappy he was, but she couldn't help him. "Let me call you an uber. You shouldn't drive in this state."

"So, you did move in here now?" he asked curiously glancing at all the unpacked boxes of Maura in the hallway ignoring what she had said. Jane shrugged and pulled the phone out of her pocket to dial the cab company.

"All right!" he laughed and lifted his arms in surrender. "I'll go, but I don't need a cab." Then he turned and the brunette watched him walk to his black SUV. She wondered if she should follow him, take away his keys and make him use an Uber. But she knew that he would refuse. Therefore, her eyes simply followed as he pulled out of Maura's driveway. The car sped up as soon as he was on the street.

Jane had barely turned when she heard the loud noise of a crash. "No!" she exclaimed. "Maura, there was a car accident!" she yelled into the house before running towards the scene. "Please don't let it be Gabriel. Please just let it be a simple car crash." She prayed while rounding the next corner. Then her eyes saw what her ears had heard. The sound had been far to loud to just be a simple car crash.

Despite being shocked her feet kept running towards the scene. Two cars were literally ripped into pieces, the street covered in oil and fuel. "Shit!" she mumbled between her breath. Her hand was already at her phone, dialing 911.

"Oh god." She heard herself say when reaching the nearest car to find a woman's bloody head against the steering wheel. It was only then when she realized the blowing horn of the car. She ran to the other side and tore the door open to check her vitals.

Maura who had followed her was by the black SUV Jane somehow refused to recognize as Gabriel's. The doc was giving her a reassuring look which meant to say: I have it. Take care of the other injured person.

The pulse of the woman was barely palping under her fingers. Jane did what she had learned during several First Aid classes, glad that Cavanaugh had forced her to go. She carefully unbuckled her and pulled her out of car, well knowing that she could incapacitate the woman for the rest of her life. But this was the only way to perform CPR which was needed as the pulse was gone. How long could it take the ambulance to come out here, she asked herself desperately while pushing into the woman's chest.

And why did nobody else help them? Her eyes wandered around the neighborhood which was silent and lonely except for one man standing on his deck. "Help!" she yelled towards him, hoping to make him move.

He did, but only back into his house. "Shit!" she mumbled and looked up when a shadow passed over the body. It was Maura who crouched down next to her. "Can you check the car for more passengers? Or take over?" Jane asked the doc who automatically reached her hands for the body on the street.

Jane didn't think about the meaning of Maura being there instead of with Gabriel in these seconds. Neither did she dare to look over to his SUV. She knew what it meant, but this was not the time for any feelings. Not as long as another life was still hanging on thin threads.

Her heartbeat stopped, when she opened the backdoor of the woman's car to find a baby seat entangled between the front seat and the gab for feet of the back seat. She reached out to liberate it from its position finding a baby staring wide eyed at her.

"There is a baby!" Jane yelled at Maura who worked hard to keep the mother alive. Finally, they heard the sirens of an ambulance and the police. Only seconds later they took over the scene. Frankie asking Jane if she was okay.

Jane finally dared to look over to the black SUV, seeing Gabriel's body lifeless on the ground. "No!" she mumbled and began to shiver. "Gabriel's dead." Maura said silently after joining them. Her hand came to rest on Janes shoulder. "You told him not to drive." She said and Janes face turned towards her. Tears were running down her cheeks and Frankie silently walked away to do his job.

Maura was all Jane needed anyways he decided and pumped his fists while walking towards the paramedics who shook their heads. The woman was dead too. At least the baby was okay, except for a shock. By now the toddler was screaming from the top of his lungs and no one seemed to be able to calm him down.

The brunette padded over to take him out of the paramedic's arm. Worried looks lay on her as she gently rocked the baby and sang a song until the cries finally subsided. Her own tears though kept flowing.

Frankie took a deep breath as tears were threatening himself. "I'll take him until we find his father or family." He said and rubbed alongside of Janes arms. "You two go home. I'll come by later to take your statements."

Jane tried to hand the toddler over without eliciting a new sting of screams but there was no such luck. The boy literally clung to her by holding on to her shirt. "Let him stay with us until you found his relatives." Jane said and Maura nodded. "We have all the supplies to take care of him." The doc added, feeling Frankie's hesitation.

R&I

They returned to Maura's home as quickly as possible. Marcella was still sitting on the floor and playing with her cars. "Sorry for leaving her alone." Maura said with a guilty look. "You wouldn't have if it hadn't been an emergency. Besides she's safe. We locked the fire away and attached pillows to the edges of the table. Its fine." Jane replied with a gently smile.

Marcellas eyes widened when she saw the baby in Janes arms. "How old is he do you think?" Jane asked the doc who sat on the edge of the couch next to them. Her hands were resting on her lap while Jane was kneeling next to Marcella. "not older than 6 month I'd say." The doc said. "Me too." Jane glanced at the boy who smiled at them.

"What a start into this world." Jane sadly said, not daring to think about Gabriel or the boy's mother. "He was lucky because you were there." Maura laid a hand on her shoulder. "And you." Jane smiled sadly.

"Hungry." The girl interrupted their conversation. Jane stroke through her hair with a chuckle. "We fed you 90 minutes ago." She stated, realizing how the world could change entirely in such a small amount of time.

"Baby hungry." Marcella repeated stubbornly, pointing her index finger to the boy. "No honey, if the boy was hungry, he would let us know. You did for sure." Jane replied with another chuckle. Right then the baby began screaming in her arm which made the brunette give her daughter an astonished glance.

Thank god, Marcella didn't know how to say told you so, she thought and stood. "I still have some baby bottles in one of the boxes in the guesthouse. I'm going to fetch them." She said and handed the boy over to Maura who tried not to show her insecurity. Jane felt it and took the boy back into her arms. "Or you go and fetch them."

Obviously, Maura felt much more comfortable with going through Janes private stuff and headed off into the other house to find a box which read Baby. Upon returning a few minutes later she triumphantly dropped the box onto the kitchen counter.

The brunette combed through it calmly with a crying baby on her arm. "They are not immediately starving to death." She chuckled at the doc's curious look. She piled a heater, a baby bottle and some milk powder onto the counter next to the box and instructed Maura how to use and clean everything. Meanwhile Jane went back to the house to get Marcellas old car seat to strap him into it.

The girl was following their doings with interested eyes. Every now and then she benched over the crying boy to stroke him. And Maura watched them all in silent awe. Jane took the boy out of his seat and nestled him into her arm like a pro to feed him. "You all are beginning to make me nervous." She stated after a while of being stared at.

"Oh, we are not staring at you. We are looking at the boy, right Marcella?" Maura said which made Jane huff. "hives Maura." She replied in an amused tone. The doc immediately reached for her neck and blushed.

Jane bit her lips. Gabriel was dead and they were making jokes. Or maybe the jokes were just their way to cope with this traumatic event. Taking a deep breath, she handed the bottle to Maura to place it onto the coffee table. The boy was slowly falling asleep.

Marcella was also finally getting tired and voluntarily followed Maura to her bedroom. When alone, Jane stretched out on the couch, the baby in her arm. I could close my eyes for a few minutes she thought and did so.

She glanced around confused when being awoken by some voices in the hallway. There was Frankie talking low so that she couldn't understand and Maura commenting here and there. "We can foster him." She heard Maura say and Jane just wanted to hug her for being so kind.

Jane knew that this meant that the police hadn't been able to find any relatives. Suddenly she was angry at Gabriel. But most of all at herself for not insisting on him taking a cab. It was partly her fault and she felt guilty when looking at the baby in her arm.

"Don't be ridiculous!" Frankie scolded her when she mouthed her thought later while they were standing in the kitchen. "You know that he would never taken the Uber. Especially not if it was you telling him to do so. He was Gabriel! And in his mind, he was some sort of god. I don't mean to talk bad about dead people, but you know that it's the truth. And the truth is that he never gave you credit for your achievements because he always had to be the best. It was his decision to drive in that state. That stupid motherfucker." Frankie was mad, otherwise he barley swore unlike his sister.

"He's right Jane." Maura's tone was insisting. They were standing in a circle in the kitchen while the kids were asleep in the same bed.

"I'm okay with you fostering Luca. But you know how it goes. You have to contact child protective service first thing tomorrow morning to make sure that they don't find another home for him in the meantime. But please Jane," Frankie paused and gave her a thoughtful look. "Please take into account that it could be complicated." He finished his sentence with a pleading look.

"We are not married and a gay couple. Is that what you mean?" Maura asked and Jane shook her head. "He means that my ex-husband killed the boys mother." She said after clearing her throat. There was total silence in the room.

"We are still looking for relatives. If we haven't found any yet it doesn't mean anything because we didn't have the time to do a thorough search. So, we don't know if we are looking for a permanent home or just for an uncertain amount of time. Personally, I think that you would do great fostering him. The little man is lucky if he gets to stay with you. But you have to think if you can do that Jane. Whenever you look at him you will remember how he came to you. You wont be able to do this if you feel guilty."

Jane bit her lip and held on to the edge of the counter in her back until the knuckles turned white. Her eyes were on the floor until she had taken a decision. "No, I won't. And even if I do remember it will only spur me on to give him the best life possible. I don't want him to end in a family which hurts him more. If Maura is okay with it, I would like to apply to foster him. Or err we together."

Her hopeful eyes came to lock with Maura's who wore a bright smile. "Of course, I'm okay." She said and padded over to give Jane a hug. Frankie rolled his eyes and grinned brotherly. "Okay. So I'm going to give note to the cps that I think you two would do great! It might help."
