Jane was sitting at the kitchen counter with a steaming cup of coffee. Her forehead rested in the palm of her hand which was propped up next to some old pictures of her and Gabriel. All of them from high school when they were young and thinking that the world was theirs. How wrong they had been.
She stared at one were Gabriel had put his arm around her shoulder. He was wearing his quarterback uniform, and both were grinning into the camera. Jane recalled how all of the girls had envied her for being his girlfriend. "If only they had known.." she whispered to Luca who was sleeping happily in his car seat on the counter after being fed.
The door to the kitchen swung open and Angela who was bursting with energy walked in to take on her grandmotherly duties like she called babysitting Marcella while the women were at work. She stopped in her tracks though when seeing the boy.
"Did I miss something? Have I been hibernating? Whose child is this?" she asked while slowly approaching the scene. "Gabriel is dead." Jane said, lifting her head towards her. Angela's face turned first pale then curious. The woman never missed a beat Jane thought when her mother asked if this was yet another offspring of her ex-husband.
Jane slowly tilted her head and watched Angela gently stroking over the boy's face. "He hit another car and killed his mother." she slowly said and bit her lips. How come Frankie hadn't informed her?
"He wouldn't stay with anyone but me and Maura." She explained and Angela rubbed her shoulder. "I'm sorry Jane. I know that you still liked him despite him being a uhm jerk. And I'm sorry for Marcella. Have you told her yet?"
"No, he was absent in her life a lot. But we will tell her eventually. First we have to make sure that Luca is safe."
Angela nodded. "Right. What a nice name though." Her eyes shimmered.
"Would it be okay for you to sit two kids instead of one?" she gingerly asked while pouring her mother a cup of coffee.
"Of course! Don't worry. I handled all three of you. I'm experienced. Are you planning on adopting him?"
Jane chuckled. "Foster. Frankie says that they are still looking for relatives. If they don't find any, we will talk about our further proceedings."
Angela gave a satisfied nod. "Isn't he cute?" she asked pointing to the sleeping baby. "I wonder if you still say that after trying to feed him half of the day and then get puked on several times." Jane smirked while benching over the boy to kiss his forehead. He was cute she thought when he opened his piercing blue eyes and gave her a smile.
They weren't related by blood, but Jane didn't care. If it was to be, this was going to be her son. She could teach him how to play basketball and baseball. They could do fun stuff together. The thoughts made her smile and when she looked again at her mother, she saw that she had already fallen into the trap of hoping that he could stay.
"Morning." Maura mumbled while padding into the room. Jane and Angela watched her move directly towards the coffee machine. "She had her first night with a baby." Jane giggled towards Angela.
"I can hear you Jane. It's not funny." Maura smirked, taking a sip of the strong, back coffee.
"Well, she'll get used to it. You did eventually." Angela stated teasingly. Both were leaning against the counter following Maura to the fridge with their eyes. "Here let me make breakfast for the both of you." The matriarch said with a grin and made Maura sit down.
"Your blouse is inside out." Jane noticed with another giggle. "I don't care." The doc sighed. "I just want to sleep. We should have slept more the previous nights." She grumbled which caught Angela's attention. "Why didn't you sleep well the other nights?" she curiously asked.
"Oh, we did sleep well, but we…"
"We had other stuff to do." Jane interrupted Maura before she could say "had sex." This was really none of her mother's business. But Angela already knew what Maura wanted to say and laughed.
"Janie, I'm glad that you are having a healthy sex life. Nothing wrong with it."
The brunette blushed. "I know, I just want to discuss it with you." She huffed and gratefully took a plate full of toast, fried bacon and eggs out of her mother's hands.
"She's always been so shy about this topic." Angela confided in Maura.
"Helloooooo? I'm sitting right here." Jane waved with her hand.
"Welcome to the club." Maura replied taking a bite of the toast.
R&I
They made it to the precinct being an hour late after having breakfast, Maura getting her blouse right, Jane calling cps and feeding Luca. No one was wondering why they were late though because the news that Gabriel had died had quickly spread throughout the precinct.
Jane noticed the glances which were thrown towards them. Some showed pity, some real sadness. She accepted the condolences feeling weird because they had divorced only a few months ago. It got a bit weirder when Juliet shook Maura's hand saying that she was sorry for her loss.
Maura who was totally flabbergasted pointed to Jane who thought that it was time to clear a few things up. "Gabriel was my husband, or better said ex-husband. Marcella is our daughter. But as you have noticed in Nairobi, Maura and I are in love with each other. I told you the other day that I had a girlfriend. Its Maura."
Korsak and Frost began cheering. "Finally, Jane. We were wondering if you were ever going to say it." Frost said. "Hallelujah!" Korsak exclaimed.
Juliet on the other hand blushed. "I'm sorry. I didn't know. I'm sorry for your uhm loss."
Jane briefly closed her eyes thinking about Gabriel who had spent his last minutes being angry. She thought about him when they were young. When they had moved into their first apartment and the joyful moments they had spent together until he had turned to be a controlling and mean man.
She thought about how his good side had shown again that day when he had gently stroked his daughters cheek in her car seat after they had come home from the pond. And she thought about his parents and how horrible they must feel now. She had tried to call them the previous night, but they hadn't picked up. Either because they were grieving or because they were mad at her for divorcing him and destroying his dream.
Who would organize the funeral she asked herself? Probably his parents. She opened her eyes when Maura gently nudged her into her side.
Juliet was presenting the results of her search for the airlines. Jane noticed that she had done a good job, finding each and every flight the perpetrator had taken on his killing spree. This had led to pictures from surveillance videos which were now showing on the screen.
As to be expected they saw an old man with a walking stick. What was surprising though was there were some pretty good pics from his face. "He's done a worse job masking himself than you did." Jane muttered, benching forward to have a better look. Maura agreed.
"Do you recognize him?" Korsak asked the three women in the room. They were all staring at a close up which Frost had opened for them. "I'm not sure." Juliet said.
"Can I see a video?" Maura asked and Frost hammered away on his keyboard. "It's Mr. Jolly!" the blonde said after a few moments in determination. "He looks a bit different, but it's definitely him!" the doc leaned back in her chair. "Are you sure?" Juliet asked, squinting her eyes to watch the video which was on a loop.
"100 per cent! I can see it by the way he walks."
Jane sighed. She couldn't see it either, but she trusted Maura's eyes. "Does anyone know where the Jollys are? SFPD said they lost them. We lost them too. Juliet?"
The tall blonde shuffled through the pile of paper in front of her. "We lost them too." She said after a while. Jane didn't have to ask how this could have happened. If they changed their appearance regularly it wouldn't be hard to disappear. Especially if the detectives didn't know that they were looking different every few weeks or months.
"What do we know about them?" Korsak asked into the group.
"Not much. Fake names, changing looks, nothing." Frost said.
"Was Mrs. Jolly on the killing spree too?" Jane asked Juliet who said that she would check. But probably not because she never appeared on the videos.
"But she must be real. I mean we all saw her right?" Everybody tried to remember. "Have we ever seen them together in one room?" Jane asked suddenly alert.
"Of course. We saw them on the safari together on the jeep, and during our meals." Maura stated.
"Oh yeah right." Jane muttered and rubbed her eyes. She had slept for two hours maybe and her brain seemed to play tricks on her. They had an appointment with cps later which was certainly going to be fun she thought with her state of mind… - sarcastically spoken.
"But no one ever said that Mrs. Jolly is a woman." Maura suddenly stated leaning forward again to look at the video. "Frost can we take a look at all of them together?" she asked, and Frost nodded. "Sure Dr. Isles."

Meanwhile Maura and Frost were viewing the surveillance videos, Juliet and she had worked through the passengers lists again. At the same time, they had realized that there was another name on the same lists as Mr. Jolly, Maura and Frost realized the same thing by the videos.
"There is no Mrs. Jolly, Maura was right!" Jane said bursting into the bullpen with Juliet dashing in right behind her.
"We know." Frost chuckled. "We have the pictures; do you have a name?" he asked wistfully.
"Finn, Joe Finn. He was on the vacation with us. One of the singles. But we know him under a different name."
"Frank Weinstein." Maura said the name faster than Jane and nodded to herself.
"I'll be damned!" Frost muttered glancing at Maura and Jane. "If you aren't meant to be a couple, I don't know who is."
Juliet slightly cringed as Jane noticed. "We definitely never saw both in one room." Jane triumphantly said and the other women agreed.
"Question is how to find them." Juliet interrupted the victory dance, obviously grumpy. "And how its related to the fraud." Frost added, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"Well, we will have to leave you for an appointment with cps at Maura's house. But we join you later." Jane stated after checking her watch. Juliet and Frost nodded and wished them luck.
"I'm not into kids anyways." Juliet mumbled but Jane still heard her. Maura almost turned around annoyed by the constant hinting and hitting. "Don't!" JANE gently laughed. "I'm with you. I love YOU and its with you I foster a child."
