Chapter 7 - Secrets Revealed
Humphrey's POV
I ran towards Kate's and I's den, not caring that Winston, Eve, and Kate were following. Once I reached the den, I ran inside and placed my paw on the wall to activate the computer. The den wall opened up to reveal the hidden computer and I placed a video call to Director Lou's office. By now the others have caught up to me and were staring at me with shocked expressions. I knew that I would probably be discharged for letting them see all of this, but time was of the essence.
The D.O.G.S. insignia appeared on the screen, then just as quickly as it appeared, it disappeared and Director Lou's face appeared. He looked towards me, "ah, Agent Humphrey", he said, then he looked behind me and saw the others, "what do you think you are doing?!".
"I know, Director", I said, "but time is of the essence, I've located Shadow's base and I'm prepared to retrieve the stolen files and take him out".
Director Lou sighed, "that may not be a good idea", he replied, "Shadow knows that you're working for us and if you try to take him out, he'll expose our organization".
"Then why hasn't he yet?", I asked, "the mole has notified him of me, who's to say that the mole hasn't told him earlier than when I finished my training?".
"You make a fair case", Director Lou said, "alright, you take Shadow out and retrieve those stolen files".
"Yes, Director", I replied.
"I'll be sending a team to your location", Director Lou added, "they'll secure the base and wipe their memories".
Director Lou gestured to the others behind me, "of course, Director", I said.
Director Lou ended the call and the D.O.G.S. insignia reappeared on the screen. I pressed a button and the computer folded back up into the den wall, then I turned around and saw the others staring at me in shock. Winston and Kate took a step back from me when I stepped forward, but Eve stood in place. I tried to get by her, but she pounced on me and held me to the ground. "When were you going to tell us that you were a spy?!", Eve shouted, "you're working for the Rogues!".
"You really think that the Rogues have human technology?", I asked, then I flipped her off of me, taking the three of them by surprise, and ran out of the den, but Kate stopped me.
"When were you going to tell me?", Kate asked, then lowered her head, "I thought we didn't keep secrets from each other".
I raised her muzzle up with my paw, "I'll explain everything later, Kate", I said, "but right now, I have a mission to complete".
"You're not going anywhere!", Eve shouted, then pounced on me again and held me down. This time I was unable to get up, "you're not going anywhere until you explain what's going on!", Eve growled in my ear.
"There's no time, Eve!", I shouted, then tried to free myself from her grasp, but to no avail.
Eve placed her paw on the back of my head and held it down to the ground, "I suggest you explain what's going on or I'll make your insides your outsides", Eve threatened, "got it?.
"Got it", I said, my voice muffled because I couldn't open my mouth. Eve let go of my head, so that I could speak, "where would you like me to begin?".
"Where were you during the past year?", Kate asked, "and don't give me that 'I don't know where I was' nonsense".
"You know where I was, Kate, D.O.G.S. never wiped your memories", I said, "don't you remember what happened when I was taken?".
"Dogs had captured you and took you up into...whatever it was", Kate said.
"That's enough, Kate!", Eve shouted, "that did not happen!".
I chuckled, "you want the truth, yet you won't believe the truth", I said.
"What?", Eve asked.
"I wasn't relocated by humans", I explained, "a secret organization made up of dogs recruited me and trained me to be an agent".
"Why?", Winston asked, "for one, you're not a dog, and two, you're an Omega".
"Ha!", I exclaimed, "doesn't matter whether I'm an Omega or not, they don't have those kinds of ranks".
"Fine, whatever", Eve said, "why did they recruit you?".
"A dog named Shadow had stolen all of their files", I explained, "they couldn't get close to him without their organization being revealed to the humans, so they recruited a wolf, me, to find Shadow".
Kate widened her eyes, "so that's why he wants you", she said.
"Who?", Winston asked.
"Before we came out of that cliff, we were in Shadow's base", I said, "Shadow had captured both Kate and I, then Sweets came to free us, which I'm still confused about".
Eve let me up, "fine", she said, "you are now divorced from my daughter and once you've finished your mission, I don't want to see you around here again".
"What?!", Kate and I exclaimed in unison.
"It's done", Eve said, then she headed off towards her den. I could tell that Winston was at a loss of words, but he looked at Kate and I with a saddening look. "I think I'll try talking to her", Winston said.
"I'll help you, Dad", Kate said, then turned towards me, "do what you need to do, Humphrey, Dad and I will talk to Mom".
"If I...don't…", I started, but Kate cut me off.
"You'll be fine, Humphrey", Kate said, "if you were able to avoid my mother, I'm sure that you'll be fine".
I nodded, "I'll be back, Kate", I said, then gave her a peck on the cheek, "love you, Kate".
Kate giggled, as I ran back towards the mountain. Sweets wasn't around, but I didn't really care, so I approached the holographic cliff, then passed through and found the same dark room hidden behind it. Once I was inside, I found the corridor that led to where Kate and I were being held earlier. Eventually, after much exploring and dozens of dead ends, I found the main control room.
There were windows on the side and I could see the entire valley and a sheer drop just on the other side. I figured Shadow must've used image refractors, or something like that, to hide the windows on the outside, otherwise I would've seen them. I saw Shadow was waiting for me, "I've been expecting you, Agent Humphrey", he said.
"You said that last time", I replied, "you don't have anything new?".
Shadow glared at me, "no, I don't", he growled, "I'm assuming that you're here for the stolen files".
"Yeah, would mind pointing me in the right direction?", I asked, "but first, you know that I'm working for D.O.G.S. and yet, you didn't release the files to the human public, why?".
"A good question", Shadow said, "but one you're not going to hear the answer to".
Shadow nodded at something behind me, but instead of me looking at what it was and getting knocked unconscious like the last time, I rolled to the side and heard something fall to the ground. I got up and was about to attack whoever it was, but gasped when I recognized her, "Sweets?!", I exclaimed.
Sweets stood up, "damn, I wasn't expecting you to move like that", she said.
"What are you doing here?", I asked.
"Isn't it obvious?", Shadow asked, "she's working for me".
"When did this happen?", I asked, still shocked.
"Shortly after you disappeared, Shadow found me while I was wandering through the forest", Sweets explained, "and he decided to let me help him with his mission".
"And what mission is that?", I asked, "world domination?".
Shadow glared at me, "how in the world do you keep guessing my plan?", he asked.
"It's quite easy actually", I said, "every villain that D.O.G.S. has taken down, has either wanted world domination, or revenge on the organization, you are both".
Shadow snarled at me, "what I don't get though, is how Sweets can help you with that", I said.
"Sweets has helped me plenty", Shadow said, "she's told me everything about you, she's kept an eye on you after you've returned, and...she even split you and your mate, so that I could capture her".
"Why would she even help you?", I asked.
Sweets walked over to Shadow rubbed her side against Shadow's, then sat down and leaned against him. Shadow was struggling to stay upright, since Sweets was larger than Shadow, even though she's only an Omega. "You're…", I said, "together?".
Sweets nodded, "I'd do anything for Shadow and in return he treats me like a queen", she said.
"You know he's a fugitive, right?", I asked.
"I know that", Sweets answered, "but I don't care".
"Okay, whatever", I said, then glared at Shadow, "where's the files?".
"You're not going to get them, Agent Humphrey", Shadow said, "you'll never get past my security".
"We'll see about that", I replied.
Shadow pushed Sweets off of him and we started circling each other. I may be noticeably larger than him, but I knew he could pack a punch if he was able to capture Kate. I jumped towards him and tried to pounce on him, but while I was in the air, Shadow ran underneath me and punched me in the gut. Shadow laughed, as I landed on the ground groaning in pain. "So weak", Shadow said, "maybe wolf agents aren't all that they're cracked up to be".
"What about me?", Sweets asked.
Shadow smiled, "of course, you are better, sweetheart", he said, "I wasn't meaning you when I said wolf agents were weak".
I stood up and looked towards Sweets, "he doesn't love you, Sweets", I said, "he's just using you".
"Shut up!", Shadow shouted, as he smacked my face, leaving deep gashes on my cheek, and I fell back to the ground. "Humphrey!", Kate shouted, then she ran towards me.
"How'd you get here?", I asked.
"We followed your scent", Kate answered.
"We?", I asked.
"You stay away from my son-in-law!", I heard Eve shout, then Shadow yelped in pain.
I winced, "you convinced your mother?", I asked.
Kate shrugged, "it took some time, but she eventually came around", she said, then helped me onto my paws. I saw Eve had pinned Shadow to the ground, but Shadow threw her off of him and ran to one of the computers in the room. I ran towards him to stop him, but not before he pressed a few buttons and smiled. Shadow noticed me, then did a front-flip over me and tried to run out of the room, but Winston stepped in front of him. "Get out of my way, old wolf!", Shadow growled.
"Don't call my mate old!", Eve shouted, then pounced on Shadow, "only I call him old!".
Shadow rolled out of the way and was about to strike Eve, "enough, Shadow!", I shouted, as I stood up onto my hindpaws, "let's do this like how we were trained to, just you and I!".
Shadow grinned and turned towards, getting up onto his own hindpaws. We walked towards each other, then I did a front-flip towards him and quickly struck him in the chest with my front paws. Shadow got back up and tried to take a swing at my head, but I ducked and spun around, kicking him in the side. I heard Shadow grunt, then he grabbed my scruff and tossed me across the room towards the windows. Shadow pounced on me before I could get up, "you can't defeat me", he growled.
I chuckled, "you said that last time too", I replied.
Kate's POV
Shadow and Humphrey just stood on their hind paws and started fighting paw-to-paw, like humans occasionally do. It was strange seeing my mate standing up like that, but I shrugged it off and watched as Shadow threw Humphrey across the room. Shadow pounced on Humphrey before he could get up, "you can't defeat me", he growled.
Humphrey chuckled, "you said that last time too", he replied.
Shadow snarled and threw him out towards the valley below, there was a loud sound, as Humphrey flew out of the room and pieces of ice-like things fell on the floor. Right at the same time, there was a huge gust of wind going out of the room and I dug my claws into the ground to stay in one spot. I saw Humphrey fall out of sight, "Humphrey!", I shouted, as the wind died down.
Shadow chuckled evilly and my sight grew red, then I charged at Shadow, "you're dead!", I shouted.
Shadow turned towards me and widened his eyes when he saw the murderous look in my eyes. I tackled Shadow to the ground and clawed into his body and scratched out his right eye, then grabbed him by the scruff and tossed him over the cliff. Shadow screamed as he fell and I watched as he disappeared. I heard chuckling below me, "serves you right!", Humphrey shouted.
I looked down and saw Humphrey hanging on for dear life, just below the edge. "Humphrey!", I exclaimed, happily, "you're alive!".
Humphrey nodded, "yeah, can you help me up?", he asked.
"Oh, yeah", I said, then grabbed his paws, as Mom and Dad grabbed my tail and we pulled Humphrey back up. "Thank you, Kate", Humphrey said.
I smiled, then snuggled up against his chest fur, "I thought I lost you, Humphrey", I said.
Humphrey chuckled, "you could never lose me, Kate", he replied, "and besides, I don't think you could've handled Shadow without all that rage from you thinking he killed me".
"He attempted to", I said, bopping him on his nose, "that's reason enough for me to kill him".
"What about Sweets?", Winston asked.
I turned around and saw Sweets standing there watching us, "what's she doing here?", I asked.
"Shadow used her", Humphrey said, I noticed Sweets widen her eyes when he said that, "that's really all that there was to it".
I eyed Sweets and saw her look at Humphrey with a 'why' look. "Shadow used you, Sweets", Humphrey said, "he never loved you, he only wanted you, so he could learn as much as he could about me".
We heard pawsteps run into the room and turned to see a dozen dogs running in.
