A few days after meeting Richard Kore, Sly Cooper was starting to feel lonely. Sure, he liked all of the things that the 1980s had to offer: cable TV, wearing bright neon clothing, playing computer games on the Apple 2, listening to rock music on cassette tapes using a Sony Walkman, and other things. He missed his friends: Bentley and Murray very much. Sly grew up with Bentley and Murray for almost half of his life. He missed them very much. Bentley and Murray had no idea that Sly Cooper was in the 1980s.
Sly Cooper was currently watching an episode of Rubik: The Amazing Cube. The raccoon didn't really know what a Rubik's Cube was. Richard showed the raccoon a Rubik's Cube. Sly played around with the Rubik's Cube for a while. Then Sly decided to watch a few VHS tapes that Richard had lying around. The VHS tapes were of many TV shows and movies. The movies included: Superman (1978), Alien (1979), Westworld (1973), Jaws (1975), Airplane (1980), Flash Gordon (1980), and Mad Max (1979). The TV shows were: CHiPS (1973-), Fantasy Island (1977-), The Dukes of Hazzard (1979-), The Incredible Hulk (1982), Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends (1981) and Rubik, The Amazing Cube (1983).
The Rubik's Cube cartoon VHS tape caught Sly's eyes. He took it out and put the VHS tape into the VCR. He pressed play. A couple of commercials started to play. Then, an episode of Rubik, The Amazing Cube started to play. Sly was starting to look interested at the 2 Rubik episodes. The 2 Rubik episodes were: Rubik and the Mysterious Man, and Rubik in Wonderland.
Richard then walked into his bedroom. Richard was currently wearing a red Spider-Man T-Shirt with jeans. He wore a digital watch on his left wrist. Richard looked at the raccoon. The raccoon was currently wearing a bright neon green shirt with some pants. He wore shoes on his feet. Richard wanted Sly to experience the 1980s in a special way. He decided to take Sly to the local arcade. He knew that Sly would like the arcade.
"Hi, Sly." Richard said to the raccoon.
Sly looked up from the TV. He noticed that Richard was there.
"Hi, Richard." Sly said to the human kid.
"I see you've been watching some of my VHS tapes." Richard said to Sly.
"Yeah." Sly said. "I've been watching some of your shows. They're really great."
"Hey Sly, I was wondering if you could come to the arcade with me and my friends." Richard asked the raccoon.
"What's an arcade?" the raccoon asked.
"An arcade is the coolest place to hang out." Richard explained to Sly. "You can play games, play pinball, basically do anything you want."
"Cool." Sly said.
Sly liked the sound of the arcade. He had never been to an arcade before. That sounded like fun to Sly. Paris, France had no arcades.
"So, Sly, where are you from?" Richard asked Sly. He sat down next to Sly on the bed.
"I come from Paris, France." The raccoon said.
"You come from halfway around the world?" Richard asked Sly.
"Yes." Sly said. "Where am I, anyway?"
"You're in Jackson, Mississippi." Richard said.
"In the United States?" Sly asked.
"Yes," Richard said. "Why'd you ask?"
"I haven't been in the United States a whole lot." Sly said.
"Really?" Richard said, "How come?"
"Because I like to spend much of my time in Paris." Sly said.
"What's it like in Paris?" Richard asked Sly.
"Paris is great. It has a beautiful landscape, exquisite restaurants, nice museums, everything." Sly said.
"I wish I could go to Paris, France." Richard said.
"Yeah." Sly said.
Sly looked at the brand new Apple Macintosh computer that was sitting on the desk. The computer looked primitive. He'd only seen the Apple Macintosh computer a few times in magazines. Bentley once said that the Apple Macintosh computer was one of the best computers ever. Sly couldn't have agreed more.
The Apple Macintosh computer was introduced back in January. It was barely new. The computer looked more like a TV than a computer, with the beige coloring and the small floppy disk port that was on the lower right side of the computer. It had a keyboard and mouse hooked up to the computer.
Richard looked where the raccoon was looking. He seemed pretty intrigued by the computer.
"That right there is the brand new computer: the Apple Macintosh." Richard said to Sly, pointing to the computer. "It was just introduced in January."
"Cool." Sly said. "Can you show me how it works?"
"Sure." Richard said.
Richard and Sly got up off of the bed and walked over to the Apple Macintosh. Richard turned the computer on. Sly looked on the screen. The screen was all white, with a small question mark on the screen. Richard pulled out one of the drawers and took out the system data floppy disk. The Macintosh system floppy disk was the essential part of the Apple Macintosh computer.
The Apple Macintosh computer had no external hard drives, as hard drives didn't exist in the 1980s. The only way to save data from a computer back in the 1980s was to have a floppy disk. Without a floppy disk, the computer would essentially be useless. Nowadays, the floppy disk no longer exists, but back in the 1980s, floppy disks were everywhere.
Richard inserted the system data floppy disk into the Macintosh's disk drive. Once it was inserted, the screen changed and it now said: Welcome to Macintosh.
"There is one important thing that you have to remember about this computer." Richard said to Sly. "In order to start this machine up, you have to have the system data floppy disk inserted into the Macintosh. The Macintosh will not start without the system disk."
"So, you're saying that in order for this machine to work, I have to insert the system data floppy disk into the Macintosh?" Sly asked Richard.
"Yes, Sly." Richard said. "Without the data disk, the Macintosh will not work. So, don't lose that floppy disk."
"OK." Sly said, "I will not lose the floppy disk."
"Good." Richard said.
Sly then saw the computer screen change to something different. The screen was grey like his fur. On the very top of the screen stood 4 options: File, Edit, View and Special. On the top right corner of the screen was an image of a floppy disk. Underneath the image were the words: Backup Disk. Sly moved the mouse over to the File screen. The File screen had your usual things: Copy, Open etc. Then he clicked on Edit. That really didn't do anything at all.
Richard took out the system disk floppy disk out of the Macintosh. He then put the Guided Tour of the Macintosh floppy disk into the Macintosh. Sly was soon given a guided tour of the Apple Macintosh system. He had to listen to a special cassette tape that explained everything. Soon, Sly got the hang of using the Macintosh.
After the guided tour of the Macintosh was over Richard asked Sly,
"What do you think of the Apple Macintosh?"
"I thibk that it's the best computer that I'd ever seen and used." Sly said. "I wish that my friend Bentley was here. He would've loved using this computer!"
"Glad you like the Macintosh." Richard said.
Richard turned off the computer. He then asked Sly if he wanted to go to the arcade with his friends. Sly said yes. They set off towards the arcade.
