Sup guys? Lighting Wolf here, back with another story. Enjoy the 800-word chapter. I do not own any rights to Fairy Tale, Hiro Mashima, Kodansha and a few others that I may write about.
Cadan blocked a sword strike that would have taken off his head if he was anyone else. He turned to look at the mercenary he was fighting to begin with.
"You know being muscle isn't everything in life." Cadan heard which caused him to hum.
"We're mercs… We don't exactly have much else to offer." Cadan stated as he sighed and turned his head to the side.
He knew most mercenary groups were not close knit. They coveted money over such. The group Cadan was part of cared enough in their wars to preserve some scant amount of morals.
"There's always more than muscle on the battlefield, Cadan." Cadan heard from another of the mercs.
He wondered what an empire… Or a former one, required mercenaries to fight in its war. Were they low on manpower? Lacking more troops that they wished to have more alternate power? Perhaps they just wanted cannon fodder to throw at the enemy and save troops.
Whatever the cause? Cadan and his group had been offered plenty of money to help them… Which was more then enough for many to flock to their banner.
"That's enough training for today." Cadan heard as he turned and placed his sword on his back.
The black-haired man was tired. He cracked his back audibly and walked towards one of the trees. He slid down and then turned to look around the encampment.
The other mercenaries lounged around the camp, wondering what would happen next. They would march sooner or later… But several of the mercs wondered if they were joining the right side.
Every single one of the mercenaries knew that Alvarez had lost one war before. They were a military superpower… And yet they had lost a war. Another war now? It would destroy them if they lost it before then.
Still? Cadan and his group had been hired, and they would fight in the war they were hired to engage in. It still made him curious what they needed to engage in a war with so badly. Resources obviously wasn't something they craved as they had managed to still field thousands of soldiers before then.
Cadan rubbed at his eyes and yawned as he tried to catch some sleep. There were 100 mercenaries and 20 were to fight under each commander. He was curious as to why they hadn't gathered more soldiers… Or perhaps they had and simply hadn't told this group. Cadan watched another group of their men walk by.
"You know we're probably going to die in this war." Cadan stated and let out a yawn.
"What makes you think that?" One of the mercenaries questioned as he turned to look at Cadan.
"The fact that this war seems to have gotten to them hiring mercenaries to begin with." Cadan said and cracked his fingers. "What empire hires mercenaries to begin with? No empire ever really hires soldiers into battles… Or calls upon retired soldiers to come back and join in the conflict. That runs counterproductive to war to begin with." Cadan said while he looked to the side once more.
Cadan could only wonder what compelled them to seek out so much outside help. There were so many things to consider when it came down to it. Perhaps they were desperate, perhaps they wanted to try and bolster their army with outside soldiers.
Cadan would continue to ponder this when they were being busy marching. It would interest him enough to ask their employer when they reached the empire. He let out another yawn and slowly closed his eyes before starting to try and drift off to sleep.
The other mercenaries passed around Cadan, just as interested as getting on with their mission as anyone else would be when it came down to it. They were soldiers and plenty of them wanted to know why they were being sent on a mission that would probably end with them all dead.
Still? The pay was enough to get them to come without asking questions for the time being.
Caden hummed to himself and cracked a small smile. He wondered what the first battle would bring them. They'd be meeting up with a large group of soldiers… And it would interest him how they acquainted themselves to begin with.
Author notes
Phew. First chapter done! I want to point out I will be making several Fairy Tail stories. Next chapter will be in 1200 words and will show Cadan and his group meeting the empire and him meeting DiMaria and such. Until then, Lighting Wolf out!
P.S: Next chapter should be 1200 words or so hopefully.
