Remus saw his arm stretch out in front of him, fingertips just barely brushing against the small golden ball as he leaned forward on his broom to try and close the distance between them. He stretched as fat as he could and closed his fist around the snitch and raised it triumphantly as he circled the stadium and flew towards the ground.
The crowd rushed towards him as Gryffindors captain grabbed the quidditch cup. They had won and it had all been because of him. He could feel them shaking him in congratulations as he made his way towards the edge of the pitch. The noise was deafening but he could clearly hear his name, he stopped just before he got to where Madame hooch was standing, something didn't feel right.
"Remus, Remus, Wake up." An excited voice said before he jolted awake and looked around. The noise still surrounded him but now he was among it as he sat in the stands with Sirius.
Sighing he rubbed the side of his head where he had fallen asleep against his friend who was now jumping and cheering with the rest of them. "James got the snitch, We've won the cup!" He filled him in enthusiastically.
Remus stood slowly once everyone else had filed out of the stands and walked down to join them. He knew he would be dragged along to the party, he always was, but for once he really didn't feel like being around the others.
He had never particularly enjoyed being the center of attention but for once he thought he might like to know what it was like to be celebrated for something he did. Sure he was good at school but that's just what was expected of him, no one even congratulated him anymore when he got good grades.
"Hey, Moony, you coming?"
He snapped out of his thoughts as he felt a hand on his shoulder, not having realized that he had been staring at the quidditch pitch. Looking over he saw Sirius and forced a smile. "Yeah, I'll be right there." He told him. "I just forgot something in the stands." He lied.
"Okay, but hurry up before you get soaked!" He warned him before running after the others.
Remus nodded but didn't move just yet, looking back to the pitch once his friend was out of sight. He needed time to clear his head after that dream and decided to take the long way back to the castle. It began to pour only a few minutes later and he was completely soaked by the time he got back inside.
He arrived at the party an hour after it had started and things were still in full swing, someone having obviously raided the kitchens. Remus didn't feel much like partying so he made his way around the edge of the room as he headed up to their room. He sat down on the window seat by his bed and sighed as he hugged his knees to his chest.
He stared out the window and watched the rain falling. Why couldn't he be good at something outside of class? Usually he was content with things just as they were but it could be hard being friends with James and Sirius sometimes.
Why were they friends with him anyway?
They were both good looking and popular and they had pretty good grades, they didn't need him.
He tried to block out the thoughts as he buried his head in his arms but that only seemed to amplify them.
He wasn't sure how long he sat there for but after a while something soft fell onto his head and he looked up. His eyes were misty but he knew the boy standing over him almost by his scent. "Sirius?" He asked in a small voice.
The older teen sighed. "Idiot, I thought I told you to keep out of the rain." He scolded affectionately, a cigarette set between his lips as he started to dry the werewolf roughly with the towel. "We don't want you making this place smell like wet dog." He teased.
Remus didn't say anything as he tried to dry his eyes with his soaking wet sleeves and Sirius frowned.
"What's wrong moons?" Sirius asked as he grabbed the other some dry clothes. "It's not like you to skip out on a party completely, or be this quiet."
The door opened again and James walked in grinning as he held a couple butterbeers. "Hey! When did the party move up here?" He asked excitedly before looking between his friends and frowning. "What's going on? Did something happen?" He asked as he put down the drinks and walked over to them.
"That's what I'm trying to find out." He sighed and sat on the bed. "He's been like this since the match ended."
"Remus? What's up?" James asked, sitting on the other bed. "Talk to us."
Remus looked out the window again and pushed the towel away from his eyes so it hung around his neck. "Can't you just be proud of me for once?" He asked softly after a minute.
The teens exchanged confused looks as Remus stared down at his hand, opening and closing it as though he remembered how the snitch had felt when he caught it in his dream. "I mean I don't really have any talents, not like you guys."
Sirius rolled his eyes. "Idiot, of course we're proud of you." He said as he tossed the pjs at him.
Remus looked up at them. "You are?" He asked.
James nodded. "Yes, now get dressed before you get sick and we'll tell you why." He said as he leaned against the bed post.
Remus got up and pulled off his wet clothes before getting changed, sitting back on the window once he was dressed. He looked at them expectantly as he caught the butterbeer James tossed to him.
"Moony, you get better grades than almost everyone, except maybe Lily." Sirius said lazily as he lit a cigarette.
"But that's what I'm supposed to do." He said as he started to drink. "You could probably beat me if you studied more."
"That's what we mean, it comes more naturally to you." James rolled his eyes. "Besides, you're a prefect, that's something."
"Yeah, I guess." He said as he pulled up his legs once more and leaned back.
"You've got a better chance at getting a date with Evans than Prongs." Sirius grinned.
This got Remus to smile as James threw a pillow at Sirius.
James sighed. "C'mon, you're one of probably the only students that has an excuse to be out after dark, and you can make it out of the forbidden forest without getting hurt, that's something we never could have done without you."
Remus chuckled. "Okay, okay, I believe you." He said as he sat up a little straighter and crossed his legs.
The others grinned and Sirius made some of the food from the party appear between them all. "Now let's have our own celebration up here!"
The three of them ate and drank as James recalled the final moments of the game for them.
His friends may be idiots at times and are known troublemakers but one thing he could say is that they always knew how to make him feel better.
