Chapter 1 of 3
Kai pulled his sword out of the dirt, the blade covered in dirt and mud. The blade had split the ribcage of a skeleton on its decent, showcasing how far Kai had come. He had come from a lowly blacksmith to a fighter. A ninja. Kai looked around, trying to find his friends. But then a sinking despair filled his head. Lloyd, Cole, Nya, Zane, Jay. Their bodies were scattered on the dirt, blood staining the area around their throats and heads.
His eyes welled up, his body shaking.
"I failed." He muttered. He curled his fists in anger. "I failed Ninjago, and my friends."
Kai walked over to his friend Jay and kneeled beside him. Kai remembered when Jay always laughed or had a joke to crack, and his face was always in a smile. But not now. Not ever.
Then Kai heard a sound. Not a regular sound of battle, but a sound of a spark. Not just one. A constant regular sound. A flicker of hope filled Kai and he looked at Jay. The cheerful boy had one difference. His eyes had a faint light in them, like a lightbulb's glow.
"Jay?" Kai asked in disbelief.
Jay coughed, blood staining the corner of his mouth. "Yeah?"
"Jay!" Kai yelled in happiness. He instantly took out a medical kit he had and started to treat his hurt brother.
Kai took out a bandage and started to wind it around the near-fatal wound on the chest Jay had received. The fire ninja knew Jay was the only one alive, as everybody else had a gaping whole in their throat. Jay's wound was different. It was just a deep cut that ran across his chest, and no major arteries were punctured. Kai finished wrapping the bandage around Jay's chest and took out a compact IV drip. He put the end of the drip into the prominent vein in the lightning ninja's wrist and turned on the life-saving device.
The life saving device soon started to work, and Kai stood up. He looked around and cried. The cry was not just a simple one of sadness, but this cry contained all of the anger and sorrow that filled Kai's heart. The area around him was either stained with blood, charred by flames or littered by skeleton and snake corpses.
Kai rethought the attack, his mind replaying the events in his head. But he couldn't. The memories just didn't exist.
Then there was a ripping sound, but not like paper. The sound was like reality itself being pulled open, and soon an orange glow filled the area.
"Kai. I know that you are upset by what has happened, but you must persevere." A mysterious voice commanded.
"Who are you?" Kai asked instantly, the words being broken apart by tears and sobs.
"I am the First Spinjitzu master, and I am here to guide you and Jay."
"For all I know, Jay is going to die!" Kai yelled, tears from his eyes being flung at the bloodstained dirt.
"He is not going to die. Your medical training has saved his life."
"But I couldn't save the others!" Kai cried. "I wasn't strong enough! I'm not the ninja I am supposed to be!"
"You have high expectations," The First Spinjitzu master said slowly, his voice booming across the battleground.
"Only if I was stronger." Kai said quietly. He clenched his fists so tight his fingernails drew blood. Kai took a deep breath and unclenched his fists.
"You will be stronger, same with Jay." The First Spinjitzu master said calmly. "Each of your friends didn't have any children, so I had made a will for them. That will dictate who gets their element when they die if they don't find a successor. Due to all of the elementalists being killed in the recent attacks, you and Jay have inherited all of their powers. But, lightning and fire are the most powerful, so you gained the element of your closest friend. You have gotten the amber element from your wife, and Jay has gotten water from his wife."
"I wish I could just turn back time and make sure this never happened!" Kai yelled.
"Be careful what you wish for…" The First Spinjitzu master said as he vanished, his voice and the orange glow disappearing.
Kai walked over to Jay and checked on his friend to make sure he was ok. After rebandaging his friend and replenishing the IV drip, Kai walked over to the fallen body of his wife.
"I wish you were still here, I just wish you were still alive." Then Kai remembered something he was told by Wu.
"When an elementalist dies, their body fades away, leaving no trace of their existence."
Kai slammed his fist into the ground and watched as his family and friends all faded away, leaving him and Jay alone on the mountain.
3 Months Later…
"Kai. Wake up." Jay said as he shook Kai.
Aroused from his sleep, Kai looked around. "Was I having another nightmare?"
"Yup." Jay replied. "My wound also finished healing so I don't have to sleep all the time."
"Ok good. I was almost done with the statue anyway." Kai questured toward the monstrous statue he had been building as he tended to Jay's injury.
The statue was about two meters tall, and it showed all of the elementalists standing in a row. Kai had etched smiles into all of their faces, but only so he could see his friends smile one last time.
"So should we train with our enhanced powers now?' Jay asked. "After all, the First Spinjitzu master himself told us to use them to save ninjago."
"I know. But the people have all gathered into the city and built walls. They are totally self-sufficient and no monster can get over the wall without being noticed." Kai got up and started to put his torn ninja gear on. It was the only reminder of his past, and Kai knew he was going to wear it until his last battle.
"Well, I am going to train with my enhanced power, whether you like it or not."
Kai tried to smile but he couldn't. There is no reason to smile. He thought sadly. It had been three months, but the pain got worse every single day. The feeling of loss filled his soul whenever he saw the statue, but he knew he had to celebrate their life, in one way or another. "Every day. Every single day." Kai muttered as he looked down at the photo hanging on the wall. The photo had been taken at his wedding, and in the photo everybody was smiling. Real, genuine smiles. Not the fake ones he had etched into the stone.
Kai took a deep breath and opened the door and looked outside. All was peaceful, and the city they lived in was the same. Besides one thing. Walls surrounded the city, and those same walls established a feeling of security among the civilians, but Kai knew that feeling would be shattered soon. He just knew it.
