Here's another for you guys. Short, but I'm thinking the next one should be longer.
Enjoy.
The Work Talk
The day was perfect. A sun shining, birds singing, didn't burn your tongue on coffee first thing in the morning while rushing out the door kind of perfect. Emily took it all in.
It was nice out. And she had the day off, but here she was sat on her couch leaning against the armrest with her girlfriend lying out on the couch with her head in Emily's lap. Emily brushes her thumb repeatedly over Rachel's arm as the writer watches the movie playing on the television. Emily has no idea what it is even though she's sure they are closer to the end of it than the beginning.
Emily liked this. Sure, doing nothing was a bit foreign to her, but she liked it. Spending time with Rachel was new. Making time for any date or activity with someone out of her BAU family was rare for her, so taking the chance and calling Rachel when she woke up was both a change and a risk. The team had gotten in from their last case a bit later than expected due to weather concerns, so Strauss gave them the morning off. Normally, Emily would have taken the morning to try a jog. It wasn't her favorite thing to do, but sometimes she felt like it. Or she would have slept in a little, or made herself a decent breakfast, but today she had woken up at her normal time and was feeling restless. Not restless enough for a jog, but just restless enough to not know what she wanted to do.
And then she thought of Rachel, and surprised herself by sending Rachel a message asking if she would like to come over since Emily's morning was free. She was too nervous to have any expectations of what Rachel's answer would be, but a smile broke out on her face when she saw the message: "sure. Just tell me where. I'll bring breakfast."
"I like this," Rachel interrupts Emily's thinking. Rachel turns to lie on her back and looks up at Emily. "I'm glad you invited me over."
Emily smiles. "I'm glad you agreed."
Rachel reaches toward the coffee table in front of her and swipes her cell phone from the table. She presses a button and the screen comes to life. She has seven texts from Ashley asking for info on where she is and what she's doing with Emily.
"And I'm really glad I put this on silent," Rachel laughs. "I probably shouldn't have told her I was seeing you."
"At least she doesn't know where I live."
"Small miracles." Rachel sits up and faces Emily. "Can I ask you something? You don't have to answer if you don't want. I'll understand."
"Okay."
"Have you lived here long? You don't have any photos up or anything? This place doesn't feel like you." Rachel blushes and then rambles on. "Not that I'm assuming I know you. We've only known each other a short time. I mean from what I know of you, you know.
"Yeah." Emily shrugs. "I just don't think it's a big deal. I'm not here much anyway."
"What's the longest you've ever been away?"
"With the BAU?" Emily asks and Rachel responds with a nod. "A week."
"That's not too bad," Rachel says.
"My job is to travel, Rachel," Emily starts. "I'm gone a lot."
"Okay."
"And I'm on-call a lot. I have to be ready to leave at a moment's notice."
"Okay."
"Across timezones sometimes and I won't be able to talk. And I'll get shot at and banged up."
"Are you trying to scare me away, Emily?"
"I'm just letting you know," Emily says. "This is my life. And if you can't handle-
"I can handle it," Rachel says. Emily doesn't look convinced. "We've been doing pretty well so far, right? Almost three weeks is something and you've been away but it's working, right?"
"I don't want this to get too far. It's not fair to you." Emily says. She didn't want to acknowledge it, but one of the boxes in her subconscious was already labeled 'Rachel'. It was way too soon for that. And it meant Rachel could hurt her, so she presented Rachel with a way to get out of this relationship now. Maybe it wouldn't hurt as much when Rachel couldn't handle being with her.
"It wouldn't be fair to you either, which is why I'm being honest. I can handle your job, Emily."
Emily wasn't sure. This wasn't the first time someone said they were fine with it but later on down the road they couldn't deal with her unavailability. But Rachel was different. Maybe because Emily wanted it to work so much. The thought shocked her. She had known this woman for almost three weeks, and they hadn't spent much time together, but she wanted her.
There was something about Rachel Montgomery. So, Emily did something else that she hadn't done with the others: she just went with it. She didn't push the issue further.
"Okay," she responded.
"Okay," Rachel echoed with a smile. "Let's see the end of this movie before you have to go."
Hey you've reached the end. I've just started working on the next one. It's looking like it's gonna involve Doyle.
Let me know what you think.
