K so this chapter is extra extra short and very odd. My b. I'll make it up to you. Promise.
I woke up at a nearby rustling. My eyes flew open, greeted by the faint morning light. My hammock swung uneasily as I shifted to look for the sound. Just outside the lean-to full of hammocks, four people gathered. George, Alby, Minho, and Curly.
Minho, who had the bunk next to mine, was the one who had awoken me with his noise. He looked on edge as he pulled on an inconvenient satchel. Its long strap would make running awkward. Curly once again was in charge of the paper. Alby was handing something over to George. It was small and looked like a white rock. But it was hard to see from a distance.
George glanced over in my direction, making eye contact. I didn't look away. He gave a suspicious glare and whispered something to Alby. The black kid nodded. What was their problem with me?
A low rumble shook through the clearing as a new door opened on the far wall, identical to the first two.
The four boys nodded to each other as the three of them took off towards the maze door at a quick jog. Alby watched them go, looked back to see me watching, and left towards the other end of the lean-to.
In the next few minutes everyone was waking up as breakfast was being made. I stayed underneath the lean-to feeling separated from the others. I only recognized a few of them and was not fond of what I had seen.
"Frying food! In a pan!" A pasty brown haired kid was singing an out of tune jingle. "Frying food, its Fryman!"
The other kids chortled. "Fryman? What kind of a name is that?" The small Indian kid snickered.
"Its his superhero name!" Pasty explained excitedly.
"More like Fry pan." Eyebrows snorted.
Then the group devolves into using Frypan's title whenever possible.
My gaze drifted to the maze longingly. These guys were idiots.
"New girl!" I looked to see Alby waving me over. Eyebrows stood next to him, suddenly looking keyed up. Sighing, I stood and walked over to them.
"What?" There was more bite to my voice than I intended.
"You two are going to be laying the ground work for the latrines in the woods."
Lovely.
I think I might have been having a stroke while writing this chapter because it makes absolutely zero sense. Thanks for reading. The next chapter is better I promise.
