Hey guys! I won't say I'm back because who even knows.
My life is about to get kinda crazy (moving and trying to start a new life and such) but somehow I was able to write this. With "subtle" prompting from my girlfriend, Mel, whom I met on here through this story.
So read and enjoy!
Doyle - Part 2
Emily jolts awake. She shakes her head in frustration. She scans the room for any movement. She glances toward the clock. 3:38 AM. She fell asleep again. Stupid.
She needs to be alert. She knows. Something is coming. She feels it.
But she's so damn tired. But she hates sleeping. She's having nightmares. And flashbacks. And sometimes a mix of the two and none of them end happily.
But she's so damn tired of being awake too. Looking over her shoulder every second. This kind of life was supposed to be behind her. BAU cases were a distraction right now. A distraction she appreciated until she returned back to the home she shared with her wife. The place they were supposed to be building a family.
Emily's head whips to where her phone is on the nightstand at its first buzz. She grabs the phone and looks at the ID.
UNKNOWN CALLER.
Emily stares at the phone. Every time this flashes on her phone lately, she feels her heart drop. Ever since news of Doyle's return for revenge and her sending Rachel away, it was a toss up between who could be calling.
She didn't even know where her wife was. Multiple times a day she had to remind herself that it was for the best. She trusted Matt to take care of her family.
Emily takes a breath before answering the call. She says nothing.
"Emily?"
Emily smiles at the voice. "Hi, Rach."
"Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You're not sleeping," Rachel says definitely.
Emily's not surprised Rachel can tell. Rachel can always tell. "Are you?" She counters.
"Not well."
"The Little One needs you to sleep, Rach."
"It's a little hard to relax and sleep when your wife is possibly being stalked by a killer while you're halfway around the world."
"I can handle this. You just need to handle taking care of yourself and the baby. Nothing is going to happen to you."
"But it might to you."
Emily has no response. Rachel's statement was a fact.
"Emily -" Rachel stops herself. She can't ask. She knows what her wife's answer will be. And she doesn't want to hear it. She knows her wife.
They fall into silence. Emily knows that pleading tone. She knows what Rachel wants to say. She's surprised and impressed Rachel's waited this long.
Rachel wants Emily to choose her. Emily always will, and she's choosing Rachel and their family right now. But not in the way either of them wants. Rachel wants Emily to run. Well, to run with her. Rachel wants them to be halfway around the world together. Emily would choose that in a heartbeat if she didn't know that there was no way she could be the one to protect Rachel right now. She needs hyper vigilance, bordering on paranoia, and if things work out the way she feels they will with Doyle, she may need to become a person she buried long ago. A person she never wants Rachel to see her as.
So, she is choosing Rachel and their family. She's choosing to spare them from the person she already feels herself slipping back into. But at the end of this, when Doyle is dealt with, she can go back to being herself. The woman her wife fell in love with. A mother to her child.
"Did you find out what we're having yet?" Emily changes the topic.
"I decided not to," Rachel answers.
"Really?" Emily says surprised.
"Yeah. It's not a big deal."
"Rach, you and Ashley have been raising the stakes on your bet about the baby for months now."
"I know. And I still think it's a girl and Ash will have to pay big but I'd just like to wait."
Emily knows what she means. "As soon as this is over we're going to find out."
"Of course." Emily can hear the smile in the novelist's voice. "How's Serg?"
"Oh," Emily hesitates.
"What? What's wrong?" Rachel panics.
"Nothing, nothing," Emily reassures her wife. "He's just not here. I gave him to Meg for a bit."
There's no way Emily would tell Rachel about the scare she had with Sergio and the window when she came home from her last case. Or that, given the chance, she had no doubt Doyle wouldn't hesitate in using their poor, little cat to send a message to her. Their sweet Sergio would not be one of Doyle's victims.
"Oh, okay. I'm sure he's loving the change of scenery," Rachel struggles to say. She sighs. "Honey, Matt is telling me our time is up."
"It's okay. Don't be too mad at him. It's his job."
"I know. Be careful, okay?"
"I will. Get some sleep. It's important for you and our little one."
"You too. It's important for you to come back to us," Rachel reminds.
"I'll try. I love you."
"I love you, too. I'll try to call again soon."
"Just follow Matt's instructions."
"He doesn't make it easy," Rachel gripes.
"Are you making it easy?" Emily asks with a smirk.
"I'm pregnant and prone to a bit of spontaneity," Rachel counters.
"So that's a no." Emily smiles.
"Hey, I can't help that my cravings aren't on his timeline."
A laugh bubbles out of Emily before she even registers it.
"Baby, be good to Matt. He doesn't need anymore gray hairs from the Prentiss'. At least not until the baby is born."
Rachel laughs. "I try."
Emily frowns when Rachel stops laughing. "You should go."
"Yes. He's starting to give me his disapproving look. I love you. Be safe."
"I love you too."
"Bye." Rachel whispers.
"Bye."
Emily drops her phone onto her bad. She sighs. The end of every call with Rachel feels like belly-flopping into freezing water after jumping off a cliff. It's an all-encompassing pain and instant sobriety that makes you question exactly how you got here.
Emily gets up and double checks all her makeshift booby traps. She walks toward the guest bedroom and steps over the barely visible, taut string in the door way.
She should try to sleep. She imagines wherever Rachel is in the world that she's trying to sleep also.
You've reached the end. Yay!
Tell me what you think. I worked on this at midnight and half asleep somehow, so I kinda feel like I screwed up the tone or maybe I've just been away from these awesome characters for so long.
Thanks for reading.
