It had been almost a year since Steven had left Beach City, and though Pearl knew it was for the best that he was living his own life, she still missed him terribly. Pearl and the other Gems could still warp to wherever Steven was, whenever he wanted to have a visit with them, but it just wasn't the same.
Pearl often found herself sitting on the porch, staring at the moon, and thinking about the time she and Rose spent at the Moon Base when Rose was still Pink Diamond.
Tonight, Pearl heard a meow, and she turned her head to see Cat Steven sitting at her feet. Cat Steven pawed at Pearl's leg, a gesture Pearl didn't particularly like, but she carefully picked up the cat so that the feline Steven could sit on her lap.
Cat Steven didn't seem to mind. She curled up in Pearl's lap and Pearl stroked the cat's back. Pearl had grown rather fond of Cat Steven over the past several months...though Pearl could have done without Cat Steven trying to give her half-eaten lizards every now and then. The human Steven said that cats brought their owners dead animals because the cats wanted to feed their owners. The cats believed humans didn't know how to get their own food.
Well, the cats weren't wrong, Pearl thought. SO may humans didn't seem to know how to feed themselves. Pearl thought that was why humans had restaurants.
Cat Steven started to purr, and her intact eye slowly closed.
"Goodnight, Cat Steven," Pearl whispered. She looked up at the sky and said, "Goodnight, Steven." She knew Steven probably couldn't hear her, but she wanted to say it anyway.
