Fantasy February Dialogue: "Maybe we should rebel against the crown? That would make our day less boring."

Word Count:1352

Sirius stood on the tree branch, watching the royal carriage bump down the road. He could see the Lupin family crest on the side of the door. He felt a small jolt in his heart. Prince Remus had returned from his monthly week in the countryside. He glanced down at James. James had no idea what Sirius had been doing these last two months.

"See anything interesting?" James asked from the base of the tree. Sirius debated telling him now, but no, that wasn't good enough. If he was going tell James the truth, it had to be done right.

"Nothing, just the same thing as every other day. Lupin's carriage going to the forest and back to the castle, same as every month. There's got to be something to do other than wait for something to happen."

"Maybe we should rebel against the crown? That would make our day less boring," James suggested. Sirius nearly burst out laughing, thinking about the time he had spent in the one of the dungeons. No, James did not not need to know about that.

"But then we'd get caught, thrown in the dungeons and you know what the dark and dank does to my complexion!"

"Fine, fine, you come up with something better," James stated.

"We could go down to the docks."

"And see if we can steal another barrow of fish? After the last time, I'm pretty sure they've got our pictures hanging around there."

"That'd only make it more of a challenge?" James suggested. Sirius threw the small spyglass at his head.

"I've got an idea," he announced suddenly. "What if we go spy on the royals? I mean, we have no idea what they do in that palace of theirs. Maybe they're practicing black magic!" he suggested. He was tired of hiding his secret from James and maybe if he showed him, it would be better than telling him. But to do that, he needed to get James inside the palace. He wondered if James would take the bait.

"The kingdom is sunny and the weather is always perfect. There's been no plagues or pests in decades, Sirius. I highly doubt they're doing anything dark."

"That maid might be working today," Sirius said with a shrug. He watched a smile form on James' face.

"The one with the red hair? Lily?"

"Maybe," Sirius answered, knowing full well James had a crush on her.

"We could go spy on the royals for a bit, and if they are doing dark magic, then we rebel against the crown?"

"Sounds like a plan," Sirius answered, climbing down the tree. Soon he and James were walking the path towards the palace. They could see the drawbridge was up.

"Looks like this is as close are we're going to get," James commented, looking for something to climb so they could hopefully see in a window.

"Nah, I know another way in, this way," Sirius said, leading James around the moat. He finally stopped at a spot where a large tree had fallen, giving them a small bridge. James shook his head. Sirius always was the best at finding ways into places. The pair crossed the tree and then stuck close to the castle's outside wall, creeping their way around until they found an opening. Sirius poked his head in first.

"Just making sure there's no guards," he said, a smile on his face. He knew there wouldn't be any guards, just like he knew Prince Remus was currently expecting him to sneak in somehow. He'd been the one to tell Sirius about the fallen tree in the first place.

"And?" James asked.

"We're in the clear."

"Did you see Lily?"

"No, I don't see Lily. Come on, lover boy, let's go find your little crush and say 'hello'."

"Right," James agreed, following Sirius inside the outer wall. Once inside, they could see the people of the castle going about their usual business. No one gave either of them a second look, something James was starting to realize.

"Sirius, no one is staring at us."

"You want them to? You want them to notice we're here and maybe call King Lyall?"

"No... but isn't it a bit... well, odd?" James asked. Sirius only shook his head.

"Nah, they're all busy and besides, we're not causing any trouble."

"Yet."

"Yet," Sirius added, wondering how long it would take before they did run into someone who would say something and blow this whole thing up. They had managed to make it almost to the keep before someone called out to Sirius.

"Hey, Sirius! Was wondering if I'd see you here today," he called. Sirius frowned. Of course, it had to be one of the stupid knights that kept hanging around. This one was the most annoying of the group. He seemed to think he was better than the others.

"Sir Snivlius, what a surprise to see you today too. I was under the impression that your nose had been mistaken for one of the plague masks things and you'd been thrown into the pit," Sirius teased. James burst out laughing, forgetting momentarily that Severus knew Sirius' name.

"The prince is in his tower, as always," Severus muttered before slinking off, glaring.

"What a tosser," James laughed. Sirius nodded, noticing a flash of red out of the corner of his eye.

"Truer words haven't been spoken, James, truer words. Speaking of things that are fair and true," Sirius said, nodding in Lily's direction. James' smile widened.

"I'm going to go talk to her, maybe this time she won't throw me in the moat," James said, darting off. Sirius only laughed shaking his head. He watched James and Lily argue back and forth for a moment.

"She really does like him," Prince Remus commented, appearing behind Sirius.

"I can tell by the way she's threatening to throw him in the moat again. You never threaten to throw me in the moat, does that mean you don't love me?"

"Sirius, I love you. I don't need to throw you in the moat to prove it. I did have you thrown in the dungeon after all."

"True, true," Sirius answered, giving Remus a passionate kiss, one the prince happily returned. "How did you know I was here?" he asked, once they finally broke apart for air. Remus laughed.

"Severus."

"Figures."

"You could be nicer to him, but then again..." Remus' voice trailed off as Lily stormed over looking at them.

"That's your friend, the idiot with the hair?"

"Yeah, he's my best friend," Sirius answered. Lily snorted.

"Is he really that much of an idiot?" she asked.

"Nah, he's not too bad most of time. You just bring out the worst in him," Sirius answered. Lily nodded.

"Hey, James, fine!" she yelled, turning her attention back to James. He stared at her for a moment before running over.

"You're not going to regret this, Lily. Just curious, what about me changed your mind?"

"Nothing. If the prince's consort vouches for you, then maybe I thought I should give you a chance," Lily answered, nodding at Sirius, who was currently holding hands with the prince.

"Wait, what?" James asked, staring at Remus and Sirius. "You're with the prince?"

"Yeah, I was going to tell you, and then things happened, and then I didn't want to because you were teasing me. And then telling you wasn't really enough, so I figured I'd show you. James, meet Prince Remus, my... um, what word do I use here?" Sirius asked, turning to Remus.

"He's my consort, we are in a serious relationship and should my father ever approve of it, I hope to call you my betrothed," Remus said, looking into Sirius' grey eyes.

"Maybe I should go talk to your father then," Sirius whispered, staring back into Remus' eyes. James and Lily exchanged a glance.

"Want to go steal some food or something?" James asked. Lily seemed to consider the offer for a moment before nodding.

"Sure, give these two lovebirds some space," she muttered, leading James towards the kitchen while Remus and Sirius started kissing.
