The three months since their graduation from high school had come and gone. Just when it seemed like the world they knew was going to end at the hands of an alien race, Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable once again saved the day…well, Ron mostly. Now, the time had come for them to prepare for the next phase of their lives.
For Kim Possible, the girl who could do anything, the past three months had been hard for her. After her home was destroyed in the Lowardian Invasion, she and her family had been living with Ron and his family while their house was being rebuilt. However, unbeknownst to anyone, she was fighting her own personal demons, partially as a result of the invasion.
"And so you see, father," Kim said to her family pastor one Sunday after church. "I just…I just can't seem to come to terms with what is happening to me. The invasion, graduating from high school, going to college, it's just too much for me right now."
Adjusting her sleeveless navy blue dress she always wore for church, Kim waited for her priest to respond.
"I see, Kimberly," the elder priest said, sitting back in his desk. "Well, have you considered maybe taking some time off from all these missions you are doing?"
Taking in a deep breath, Kim felt that her priest had a point. Now that she was a graduate of high school, life for her was going to change drastically to the point where even missions was going to be a roadblock in her daily life.
"I…I have thought about it greatly, Father Morse," she replied, reaching into her purse and pulling several small pictures of herself and Ron from their mission days. "But…its not an easy decision. Ron and I have talked about it, but we haven't made the right decision yet."
Handing him the pictures, Kim felt herself trying to come to terms with potentially retiring from Global Justice. She was becoming a young adult who would soon take on greater responsibilities.
"You seem to be enjoying your work," remarked Father Morse. "This boyfriend of yours…what does he think?"
"You mean, Ron, father?" Kim asked as he handed her the pictures. "I must have forgotten to tell you a while back, Ron and I are dating now."
Chuckling, Father Morse took a sip of his coffee.
"It's probably because he's of the Jewish faith and for me to date…"
"What's the matter with that, Kimberly?" Father Morse chuckled. "Everyone dates others of different faiths so why shouldn't you?"
Kim silently chuckled at the remark.
"It occurs to me, Kimberly," he said. "That you are at a point in your life where you must make sacrifices, kind of like what we do for Lent, if you say. But instead of 40 days, we give up things we love sometimes forever."
Shrugging her shoulders, Kim took another deep sigh. The more she listened, the more she was beginning to embrace the idea of possibly retiring from Global Justice, the organization she and Ron had been a part of since they were pre-teens.
"Look, Father Morse," Kim said, looking briefly away from her priest. "Giving up something like saving the world is not easy for me and I'm sure it isn't easy for Ron, too. But, with my enemies either in jail or have reformed, what else is there to do?"
"You must consider your options, Kimberly," Father Morse suggested. "If you are going to a college as prestigious as Brown University, you must prepare to give up something that no longer benefits you."
Taking yet another deep breath, Kim realized she had a tough decision to make when it came to her future as a crime fighter. Her priest was right on one thing: she was going to a prestigious university, one of the most famous colleges in the world and it would take up a lot of her time.
"Listen, Father Morse," Kim said as she rose to her feet. "I don't leave for college until the end of next week, so maybe I can use this time to think about what I need to do."
"Of course, Kimberly," replied Father Morse as he hugged Kim before she left the church.
…
Going out into the parking lot, Kim got in her car and right away, her Kimmunicator rang showing Ron on the caller ID. Picking it up, she answered it.
"Hey," she said to Ron's face on the device's monitor. "Just got out of meeting with Father Morse."
"I'm surprised you never told him about me," Ron remarked, raising an eyebrow. "What's up?"
"Just getting ready to head home," Kim answered as she drove away from the church. "Still thinking the same damn thing I've been thinking about since graduation."
"Us being together no longer?" Ron asked in a slightly panicked voice.
"No," Kim sighed. "We're still going to be together, it's just that…our crimefighting days. I think they could be numbered."
Sighing, Ron could sympathize and feel with his girlfriend's pain.
"You might have a point there, KP."
"I mean," Kim stammered, her car stopping at a red light. "Sure we may not have enough time for world saving now that we are graduates and going on to college, but…I…I don't want to get rid of it entirely."
"I know what you mean, Kim," Ron said. "I mean…ever since we adopted Hana, I've felt that doing what I do, it gives me a chance to be a good role model for her. If I quit crimefighting along with you, what message does that send those who look up to us?"
As the light turned green, Kim realized that her boyfriend had a point. If they were to retire from Global Justice, it would be sending a bad message to those who looked up to them as respectable role models.
"I know what you mean," Kim replied as she pulled into a CVS parking lot so she could concentrate on talking to Ron while not driving. "More than likely, we are going to have to get a good job to pay off the student loans."
"Well, it's really you with the loans, KP. I'm just going along for the ride."
Reaching into her purse, Kim pulled out the pictures of her and Ron while they were on missions for Global Justice.
"Supposedly you're right on that," Kim said. "I mean…if I have to make a choice, I don't want to retire from crimefighting, but I might not have any choice in the matter. Father Morse said that I have to make a sacrifice like what I do for Lent every year, only this time, it's permanent."
As Kim spoke, she felt a small tear in her eye. Crimefighting was her passion and she didn't want to give it up for all in the world she so desired, even if she was going to college.
…
…
At the same time, Dr. Betty Director sat in her office at Global Justice headquarters thinking the same thing. Her thoughts were focused on her top two agents and their future with the organization.
"There's gotta be someway to keep them both on," she thought to herself as she walked over to their mission files. "Possible and Stoppable, they are the best agents anyone at this organization can have. But how can I convince them to stay?"
Just then, Dr. Director's intercom buzzed and she went to answer it.
"Yes?" she asked, speaking into the device. "What is it?"
"Dr. Director, ma'am," a female voice on the other line said. "I have a Tony Stark on the line for you."
The middle aged woman felt her eyes widen upon hearing this person's name, but she still needed clarification on why he was calling.
"What business does he have with me?" she asked.
"He didn't say, but it's regarding Agents Possible and Stoppable," the voice replied. "Supposedly, he wants to recruit them as his personal bodyguards and he wants your blessing."
Dr. Director felt herself teething with rage, realizing that someone was taking advantage of Kim and Ron's graduation.
"My blessing?" she cried. "Tell him that I can…"
"Also, he wants me to tell you that he's flying into Dulles tomorrow morning on the redeye," the secretary interrupted. "He says that can help you keep them on."
"Very well," groaned Dr. Director. "If he's not trying to pull anything, I'm more than willing to let him see me. Thanks!"
Turning off the intercom, Dr. Director rubbed her left eye in disgust. She couldn't help but wonder if this Tony Stark was trying to pull something on her.
…
…
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, Tony Stark sat in his office contemplating the journey he was personally about to go through. Unbeknownst to Dr. Director, Tony was dealing with his own changes in his own life. Looking out the window towards Downtown Los Angeles, his solitude was interrupted by the sounds of knocking on his office door.
"Who is it?" he asked.
"It's Julia and Rhody," answered a male voice, causing Tony to turn back around towards his office door.
"Come on in," he called and the door opened to reveal an African American male and a red haired woman dressed in a blue skirt suit. "Let me guess, you guys anxious about the move as I am?"
"We're only moving Stark Enterprises' main headquarters, Tony," remarked Rhody as he placed a cup of coffee on Tony's desk. "I mean, we all agreed that it was for the best, with Force Works being permanently barred and all…"
"You don't have to remind me of that," Tony interrupted, taking the cup of coffee and sipping it. "In fact, that's part of the reason why we are doing this, right? To get the company my father built out of the mess I put us in?"
"Since when did you put us in a mess, Tony?" Julia asked, leaning forward on his desk and tapping her fingers. "All the stuff with the Mandarin…"
"Not to mention letting my emotions get the better of me and causing Iron Man to go rogue; you getting tortured by one of my ex-girlfriends, Julia; Rhody, you trying to come to terms with your brother all that stuff," Tony sighed. "This…this is for the best. LA is a dangerous town to live in and relocating our headquarters seems to be the logical move for all of us. Besides, we can get a lot of college interims being in Providence and all."
It was then that Julia noticed a small piece of paper on Tony's desk with writing on it.
"What's this?" Julia asked, picking it up and reading it. "Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable? Aren't these the two bodyguards you want us to have?"
"When we are on company property at our headquarters? Yes. The last thing I want to have happen is you being put in harms way, Julia."
"I'm sure that I can take good care of myself, thank you," the red haired woman chuckled. "As Stark's Chief Operating Officer, I've had to get into worse situations before for the sake of the company."
"But this is different, guys," Tony replied. "Do you remember hearing about the alien invasion that happened near Boston while we were fighting the Mandarin?"
"Well, if it weren't for the Mandarin, we could have been fighting them," Rhody said.
"Don't you see?" Tony cried, rising to his feet. "That alien invasion near Boston is a clear indication of what our future is going to be. With Force Works permanently out of business, we need to build a new team and Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable are the ones who qualify for that new team. Can you just picture this: Iron Man and two young world saving agents working together?"
Both Julia and Rhody were somewhat dumbstruck by their friend and colleague's idea.
"Hate to break this to you, Ton," Rhody remarked. "But, what if they don't want to join forces with us?"
"They've got to join," Tony remarked. "Besides, it's been rumored that they are retiring from Global Justice and we've got to keep them in the game."
"Okay then," Julia said as Tony got to his feet and walked to the door of his office. "But, what if they don't want to retire from Global Justice?"
"I intend to keep them at Global Justice," Tony declared. "By joining forces with them. Now if you'll both excuse me, I have some Sunday meetings to get to."
Hastily running out of the office, Tony left his friends alone to contemplate what he was planning.
"Chuckles, are you following what Tony is trying to do?" Rhody asked.
"Yes…and no, Jim," Julia answered with a dumbstruck look on her face. "Yes and No."
"And all on a Sunday morning when we should be at church praying to Jesus," remarked Jim.
…
…
Meanwhile, Kim returned to her newly built family home still trying to come to terms with what her future was planning to be.
"Hey Kimmie," her mother, Anne Possible, said as she walked in from the kitchen. "How was Mass? Sorry that we couldn't make it."
"Great, another Sunday in ordinary time completed," Kim replied as she removed her black wedges from her feet. "And another Sunday before Ron and I leave for college."
"Well, you're the one to college and he's along for the ride," Anne remarked, suddenly noticing her eldest child's distressed look. "Kim, is something wrong?"
"Oh, uh, sorry, mom," Kim stammered as she walked into the kitchen. "Just been doing a lot of thinking about my future with Global Justice."
"I'm sure it is not easy for you."
Sitting at the kitchen table, Kim looked up to the ceiling and once again pondered the cards she had been dealt with.
"Mom, you know how passionate I am about saving the world," Kim said. "What would you do if you had to give it all up for your college education?"
"I'm sure you can find something that you can enjoy in addition to your college education," Anne said. "In fact, your father and I were talking about maybe joining the Providence Police Department as a special officer. They are always looking for volunteers."
"It's more local, mom," Kim replied, looking down at her kimmunicator. "What I need is something related to my global studies degree I am pursuing. Just because Drakken and my other enemies retired or reformed or even imprisoned, it doesn't mean that crime will just go away. No, there needs to be a way for Ron and I to stay on at Global Justice. But, the more I think about it, the more it drains me mentally."
Sympathizing with her daughter, Anne sat down with Kim at the Kitchen Table. She could understand what Kim was going through greatly as she had been through the same process herself long ago.
"These choices are never easy, Kimmie," Anne said, reaching out and grabbing her daughter's hands. "I had to make some tough decisions before I went to Medical School, giving up some pleasures in exchange for a successful life. But the older I get, the more I come to appreciate what I did."
"What kind of pleasures were there?" Kim wondered.
"Guilty Pleasures," Anne chuckled. "Mostly unhealthy pleasures, but still they were pleasures. But, I think what you are doing is for the common good."
Sighing again, Kim considered what her mother just said. But, her mother was right, what Kim and Ron was doing was for the common good and at that moment, Kim got herself an idea.
"You know, you're right, Mom," she remarked, coming to a realization. "Maybe I can use my crime fighting to benefit my college education. Maybe I can get a job being a bodyguard for someone. The possibilities are endless!"
Anne smiled at her daughter's encouraged attitude. Rising to her feet, Kim hugged Anne tightly and embraced her possible new turn in her crimefighting career.
…
Returning to her bedroom, Kim reached for her phone and called Ron's number. It took a few moments, but Kim finally got through to her boyfriend and sidekick.
"Hey Kim," Ron said on the other line as she sat down on her bed.
"Ron, I just had an epiphany," Kim replied. "Yeah, you heard me right, an epiphany!"
"Isn't the epiphany more of your faith?" Ron asked, causing Kim to slightly frown at the slight change of topic. "Because…"
"That's different, totally different!" Kim interrupted hastily. "Listen, I think I know a way we can keep crime fighting and focusing on college at the same time."
"How?" Ron wondered.
"How do you feel about being a bodyguard to someone important?"
It took a moment for Ron to respond to his girlfriend's suggestion, but he eventually did.
"Kim, it's a great idea," he replied. "But, who would be famous enough to hire bodyguards such as us?"
"There has to be somebody famous enough looking for bodyguards," Kim declared, grabbing her kimmunicator and trying to look up list of celebrities looking for bodyguards. "Why don't you start looking up on your end?"
But Ron didn't think it would be that easy.
"Kim, as your boyfriend," he said. "I really think you might want to strongly consider the options here. What if being a bodyguard gets in the way of your cheerleading, your education? Brown University…"
"…will appreciate what we do for a side living," she interrupted. "Find some celebrities and get back to me. All right, I love you."
Quickly, Kim hung up the phone and proceeded to find some potentials high profiles to protect.
…
In his bedroom at his house next to his girlfriend's, Ron went over to his computer and went about finding potential celebrities.
"Rufus, I'm telling you," he said to his naked mole rat as he made his way onto google. "What Kim is asking of me is big. She's going to be in a major university and crime fighting will just get in the way."
Rufus responded in his usual small voice to Ron, offering the best advice possible.
"I get it, I get it, that crimefighting is our life," he said. "But, I want Kim to understand what she wants us to do. I want to stay on at Global Justice as well, but these have to come first."
Ron couldn't believe that he was saying what he was saying. In his mind, he had to remember that being in high school wasn't really all that important to him.
"High School, we had some flexibility in our schedules. College, no chance. Still, maybe doing part time bodyguarding may not be so bad. Moola's gotta come from somewhere, right?"
Eventually, Ron came across a result that was linked to the Stark Enterprises website. Clicking it, he saw that the company's CEO was looking for personal bodyguards.
"Hmm, Tony Stark's moving to Providence," Ron whispered, before reading the fine print below. "Currently looking for one or two bodyguards for important events and assignments. Apply within. Salary will be negotiable."
Picking up his cell phone, Ron took a picture of the search result and forwarded it to Kim. From there, he took a deeper look at the result while he waited for a response from her. As he looked more and more at the results, Ron began to wonder if this was possibly the true next chapter of his life with Kim, not just being on Brown University's campus, but also their respective crime fighting careers too.
…
…
Later that day, Tony Stark was back at one of his mansions preparing for a redeye flight to seek out Kim and Ron for employment.
"Mr. Stark," said a robotic female figure on a television screen that talked in a raspy voice. "Your car is outside to take you to LAX."
"Thanks," he said grabbing his suitcase and preparing to make his way out of the bedroom. "Is Julia and Rhody also ready? They are going with me right, MARGE?"
"Yes, they said that they will meet you at LAX for your redeye flight, United Airlines Terminal 7, correct?"
Chuckling, Tony walked over to the female figure on the screen.
"You've got it right on the nose, MARGE," he laughed in a sly voice. "But don't do it too often. We don't HOMER to start being so jealous, don't we?"
"If you say so, Mr. Stark. Have a nice flight."
With his bags and his armor packed, Tony proceeded towards his limousine and settled in for the short ride over to Los Angeles International Airport.
"Julia, you and Rhody on your way?" he asked his COO and girlfriend on the phone.
"Gave some instructions to my teenage daughter and to the housekeeper, but I'm on my way," replied Julia. "By the way, Tony, I just had a thought."
"What's that?"
"The ad we posted on the company website for personal bodyguards," Julia answered. "Do you think the people you want to have will take note of it?"
"They've got to, Julia," Tony declared. "They've just got to. Possible and Stoppable just can't retire from crimefighting. We are the only ones who will keep them in the game and you know it."
"If you say so," Julia replied. "See you at the airport."
Hanging up his phone, Tony continued to remain determined of what he needed to do in his quest to get both Kim Possible and Ron Stoppable on his team. But, the first thing he needed to do was to persuade Dr. Director to loan them to him while also keeping them connected with Global Justice in some way.
Very soon, the negotiations for Kim and Ron's crimefighting career would begin.
