Authors Note: So I decided to do an alternate chapter to Mary Anne before ending this story. Um, there was this discussion on the BSC subreddit about which girls would be gay and I thought of Mallory and Mary Anne. Mary Anne because she's the most like the author Ann Martin, who modeled Mary Anne after herself in a lot of ways. And Ann Martin is a lesbian. At first I didn't want to write because I didn't want to make them carbon copies of each other. This is just a happy medium between the two.
Enjoy!
New York City bustled outside of the library on fifth avenue. Mary Anne Faulkner (nee Spier) had hailed a taxi cab with her children in tow. The four girls filed into the huge building going straight to the children's section. She loved living in the city, it had been a dream since she was about thirteen and it was wonderful.
Now she sat in the children's section of the library gazing around at the books. Her long skirt ballooned out around her. Her youngest daughter, Vivian reading to her. Her eldest daughters, twins Olivia and Audrey, browsing along the juvenile fiction. Well Olivia was anyway. Audrey was looking through a book for cheerleading chants for the peewee team.
"Mommy," said Vivian tugging at her skirt. "I see Naomi from school. Can I go and play with her?"
"Sure, I'll go and talk to Naomi's mom too," said Mary Anne.
Together they flocked the women that entered the children's room. Naomi and Vivian ran off to the toys to play and talk about books or school. Naomi's mother, Jennifer, had sat down next to Mary Anne. Well kind of flopped down next to her.
"Hi Dr. Faulkner," said Jennifer, then shook her head correcting herself. "Mary Anne sorry. It looks like the kids have found something fun to do. What kind of books do you have?"
"Just some children's psychology books," said Mary Anne brushing her dark hair behind her ear, referring to her job. She had her own practice as a children's psychiatrist and finding some materials for them. "I'm waiting for Katharine to clock out for her lunch."
Katharine, her wife, worked in the library. It was fun to have a wife that worked with books of all kind. It's kind of what brought them together. They were both at university at the same together at William and Mary. Then went on to grad school together in New York together when they moved in.
They had married a year into grad school. It was bliss as they adopted their three girls.
"Fun, you guys have any plans coming up? Vivien has been mentioning your anniversary is coming up and she's giving you a present," said Jennifer with a sly smile on her face.
Mary Anne's eyes widened and shook her head. Their daughter did not need to give them any sort of gift. Now she would be sitting down with the girls later in the day telling them not to do anything. Maybe they should plan a family outing sometime after the trip.
"We're going to leave the girls with my stepsister," said Mary Anne. "And we're thinking of going to Boston for the weekend."
"Boston in the fall? That sounds gorgeous," said a voice behind her. "And I have it all alone with my lovely wife."
Katharine stood there in the library tee-shirt and a pair of jeans. Her black hair held half up in a butterfly clip and book in her arms. Mary Anne stood up and smoothed out her skirt took Katharine's hand and kissed her softly. She gave her a cheeky smile and sat down next to each other.
"So, no need to go out for lunch," said Katharine. "I ordered something from the deli around the corner and they're going to deliver. We're going to have lunch at Bryant Park."
"Sounds like a great lunch date," said Jennifer. "Why don't you two go ahead and out together? I mean I can watch the girls for you."
"It's okay," said Katharine. "I mean how often do I get my wife and daughters to hang out on my lunch?"
"It's not often," said Mary Anne nodded along with her.
The girls saw their other mother and rushed over to hug her. Jennifer rounded up Vivien before leaving the library all together. Of course after checking out a few books at the front desk. A boy on a bike caught them on the way out with the food. They walked about a block before heading into the park. It was a rather beautiful September day with school kids running around the park. Mary Anne found a picnic table and Katharine getting the food ready.
The girls were squabbling over where they would sit at the table. One side was going to be uneven either way.
"Okay how about one of us sits at the head of the table," said Mary Anne shutting down the argument. "Your mom and I will decide how we'll sit."
None of the three looked very happy but stopped talking before deciding Vivien should sit at the end. Food spread out in front of them with Audrey making a sandwich out of two everything bagels. She and Katharine just smiled before taking each other's hands. Then shared a long look with each other grinning.
"So how was school today girls?" asked Mary Anne eating some chips.
"It's only been the first week mom," said Olivia groaning a little. She did not really like school despite having good grades.
"I think it's great," said Audrey. "I'm captain of the cheer team."
"And I'm learning about earth," said Vivien brightly. "And then we'll move on to the planets."
"Very awesome," said Katharine starting to eat her deli sandwich. Mary Anne feeling happy that her day was going well. "Well it's the weekend and we have it all free. Do you have something in mind?"
Conversation switched to possibly seeing a play. Rollerblading in Central Park or hanging out at home for a movie night. Then just deciding that it would be easy for them to just do it all. It wasn't like they had anywhere to be for the next couple of days. After all, it was a long weekend.
