Disclaimer: I own nothing except my imagination.
A/N: Alright so we've been flooded with Burzek content since last week's episode and I couldn't in good conscience let that slip through my fingers to write a one shot about it. Now I know that it won't happen this way but I thought it would be fun to let my imagination run with me on what could happen.
Kim was tucked into Adam's side, not able to believe what was happening to them right now. They had finally admitted that they wanted something more, their recent dynamic proving the chemistry that neither one of them could deny, existed. What was even more baffling was the fact that Makayla was now sitting on the living room floor with games she had insisted on buying the little girl.
"Where's your head at darling?" He kissed the crown of her head as his eyes and heart took it all in too.
"Lots of things." And that was true. The whole last day had been a whirlwind for the two of them.
"So, is this part of our relationship now? That we're accepting that every 6 months or so we sleep together?" She questioned as they walked towards his truck.
"It's real alright with me."
"Yeah."
"Or we could try the version where we sleep together on the regular."
"And what version is that?"
"It would be called dating."
"No."
"We already act like a couple, is it so crazy that we try again?"
"Yeah."
"Why?"
"Because, eh, I think I know what I want now."
"Alright." He played along with her.
"I want all of it Adam." She looked at him briefly before continuing. "I want, I want the proposal, I want getting married in some bad banquet hall, I want to have babies, I want the job, I want the mess, I want the mess, I want the whole."
"Okay." He was just content listening to her go down the list of her dreams
"Still want to talk to me about dating?"
"Yes." He said with complete certainty. He wanted everything too and he wanted it with the woman sitting next to him.
"I meant what I said, I'm in it for the long haul."
"I know." She whispered.
"She just experienced trauma." Makayla's aunt argued with Kim.
"What if Makayla came home with me?" The idea just came to her and she saw the look on Adam's face as she said it.
"I know I'm not her family." She remembered telling him when they were alone. "I feel something for this kid."
"You know you can't replace what we lost."
"This might change what we have, what we can have.
"I'm going to make sure that everything is okay." She was crouched down in front of Makayla with a smile, wanting to reassure the little girl.
Kim had all of the events of the last day swirling around in her head and she was trying to make sense of all of them. Maybe they weren't meant to welcome the baby they lost, maybe they weren't meant to get back together organically, but maybe this moment, with the three of them like that, was meant to be the change that they both needed to make their relationship make sense.
Adam watched Makayla as she looked through the different games and kept his focus there while he could feel the wheels turning in Kim's head. It had been a taxing day on her, and he knew she was re-evaluating so many things right now. One thing he wasn't re-evaluating was his own wish to have it all. He didn't care where they got married or in what house they would live because he wanted his girl to have everything she wished for. He was going at the pace she was setting but when it was the right time, he would give her everything that she ever wanted.
"So, did you pick a game Kayla?" She still wasn't talking all that much, but he didn't want to push her more than he needed to.
"This one." Kim chuckled while Adam cackled. Kim had picked all of them, but Adam had insisted they pick up pie face because it was fun and had the potential to make a mess.
"You had to get her that game."
"Because I knew that you'd have fun getting that stuff off of me later." He winked at her with a chuckle, Kim emitting a chortle, her cheeks becoming bright red.
"Adam." She admonished him. "Kid in room."
"She doesn't understand, you're good." He winked at her again.
"Alright, let's play so you can win against Adam, yeah?" She stood from the couch and handed Makayla her hand to bring her into the kitchen. Adam followed behind them with a smile on his face, game in hand. He found Makayla tucked into Kim's side as Kim rummaged through the cupboard for a can of whipped cream. The trust the little girl put in Kim went straight through his heart and he knew he could get used to evenings like this.
"Are you ladies ready?" He rubbed his hands together.
"Oh, we're ready, right Makayla?" She simply nodded, a shy smile on her face.
"Ladies first."
"Always the gentleman." On first try, Adam was coated in whip cream, both girls laughing, Makayla giggling uncontrollably.
"This is not fair." Adam acted offended as he wiped some cream out of his eyes again. So far, he was the only one having splashed with the white fluffy desert.
"What happened to me getting it off of you?" Kim could barely contain her giggles.
"Very funny Burgess."
"Uh oh, he used my last name." Adam was up so quickly that Kim didn't have time to react. He had filled a hand full of whipped cream and her face was filled with white fluff and everyone was now in a fit of giggles.
"Alright, alright, that's enough." Adam said between two laughs. "How about we get cleaned up and I'll cook something for dinner yeah?"
"Come on." Makayla had some whipped cream on her by her proximity to Kim. "Let's get you in a tub sweetie." She followed her quietly into the bathroom and Kim started running a bath before grabbing Makayla's things. She washed herself as much as she could while the little girl soaked in the bubbles. Kim didn't want to take her eyes off of her just yet, so she stayed in the bathroom, trusting Adam to find something kid friendly in her kitchen to eat. When they returned to the kitchen fresh faced and Makayla in her purple pj's, Adam was setting the table.
"Smells good in here."
"I found some spaghetti sauce with some meet balls in there. They looked safe enough to eat." He teased her.
"Nicole made them for me."
"We're safe to eat then, right Kayla?" She nodded.
"See, she already knows who's the cook here." He chuckled, kissing Kim on the cheek as she settled Makayla with something to drink. Dinner was spent mostly in silence as Adam and Kim were content to watch Makayla eat her pasta. Adam slipped his hand on Kim's thigh under the table and they smiled at each other. Adam insisted he handle everything at Kim's annoyance. They usually had a routine where whoever cooked didn't clean and now, he was doing everything but tonight was different. Adam wanted Kim to be able to spend as much time as possible with Makayla so she could for form a proper bond with the little girl, so he cleared everything and pulled some ice cream out of Kim's freezer and presented them with a bowl each.
"Wait, I have something fun we can put on that." Kim grinned and stood, running a hand against Adam's shoulder in passing and she fished a small container of sprinkles and returned with it. "It needs a little bit of magic in it." She always kept some around ever since Zoe was old enough to have them on the creamy desert and she sprinkled some colourful sparkles on the vanilla ice cream to Makayla's delight. They ate it silence again, must like dinner but both sported a smile. "Do you like it?" She nodded with smile. "Alright, finish up and then we'll brush your teeth and it's bed."
"Can read me a story?"
"Yeah." She looked at Adam with uncertainty, but he smiled back at her. "Yeah, I can do that." They finished eating their desert and Adam cleared the rest of the kitchen. When he was done, he followed Kim's voice to the second bedroom and he leaned against the door frame with his hands in his pockets, watching the girls with a smile. He knew that Kim didn't have story books in her apartment, but she seemed to be doing just fine with a made-up story about a princess and her prince. It didn't take very long for Makayla to fall asleep, but Kim left the light from the bathroom open so she wouldn't get scared if ever she woke up in the middle of the night.
"You're a great mom." He whispered as she stopped at his level.
"I'm not a mom Adam."
"Could have fooled me darling." He pulled her in his side as they watched her sleep for a few extra minutes. He pulled her along with him back to the living room, so they finish their evening together.
They found themselves tucked into each other on the couch again when Makayla was finally sleeping, and the silence was welcome to them both. Adam let it stretch because Kim seemed to be having thoughts going a mile a minute but when it seemed like it was overwhelming her, he spoke up.
"Talk to me darling."
"I'll have to go get her some more things in the morning. There's so much to think about, things to do. I need to ask Voight for some more furlough so I can get her settled with everything she needs." She was rambling, she was nervous. Voight had given her a few days off to settle herself with Makayla but now it didn't seem to be enough anymore.
"Hey, hey, look at me." He put his beer on the side table and cupped her cheeks. "You need to breathe a little bit." He ran his thumb against her cheek.
"I can't, not anymore."
"Yes, you can." He chuckled. "And you, do not have to go get her more things in the morning, we are."
"Adam, she's not your responsibility."
"My name might not be on those papers but you and me, we're it. I'll give you the proposal, the getting married in a bad banquet hall, I'llgive you the babies, the mess, the whole." He whispered, his lips now inches from hers. He wanted her to know that he wanted exactly the same things that she wanted, and he was going to keep his promise this time to give her everything.
"Don't promise." She trailed off, her eyes moving from his chestnut ones to his lips.
"I promise to give you all those things darling, no more dragging my feet." His lips touched hers and suddenly the calm returned to her head and she leaned into him as he kissed her tenderly, sealing his promise to give her everything, finally putting things the way they belonged between the two of them.
A/N: I always thought they were meant to end up together because they were great from the start. It's been very nice to see them involved again like this so I really hope that you guys enjoyed my version of it. Please take a few seconds to review before you go and enjoy tonight's episode. - Sarra
