A/N: Next chapter will be more action-packed with more BoruSara moments.
Month three of pregnancy had come, and Sarada was already feeling better. The older women had reassured her that the end of the first trimester would bring about more energy and less nausea, and thankfully they were totally right - she felt more like her old self and was ready to take on the world.
So many things had changed in the past month; for one, her father had left Konoha again. He only lasted a couple of weeks this time, but promised to be home soon. It was horribly bitter to see him leave, but at least she had the reassurance that he would be back. Her mother treated his departure as she always did: sad, but eager for his return.
Planning for the baby had already begun. Last month she had gotten her first prenatal appointment to get an ultrasound, and when her mother had pointed out the tiny embryo moving faintly on the screen, her eyes had gotten wide. It was so tiny, and yet she could feel its flickering chakra presence and hear its heartbeat, and she got momentarily choked up when her mother got teary-eyed.
When she told Boruto about it the next day, he was just as interested, and he gasped and stared at the pictures in wonder. "I never went with Mom for hers," he'd explained, "and when she had Himawari, I was too young to really remember. This is so cool!"
In order to further prepare for the baby, she of course had to let Konohamaru know. He nearly fainted when she told him (how he hadn't figured out at this point despite the vomiting and fatigue, she had no idea), and immediately told her that she had to go on maternity leave as soon as she hit 20 weeks. She wasn't happy about it, but she understood; she already had to start looking for baby supplies. Her mother was happy to share what she had, but there wasn't much to spare given her younger unborn sibling's upcoming arrival. Hinata tried to spare some supplies too, but with her own baby, there wasn't much she could do there either.
Okay, list, Sarada thought to herself with a frown as she threw a shuriken at the target. A perfect bulls-eye, as usual. Crib, changing table, diapers. Furniture…?
Her eyes narrowed and she adjusted her glasses with one hand. If I'm gonna get a smaller place… Mama said there are furnished ones nearby for dirt cheap since she always destroys the house, but then I still need to-
"Whatcha thinking about?" Mitsuki's voice innocently asked, startling her from her inner monologue. He smiled at her when she turned. "You've been staring uncomfortably at the target for the past minute. Are you constipated or something?"
"W- what? No!" She exclaimed, her cheeks coloring in embarrassment. "I'm just thinking!"
Mitsuki hummed, tilting his head to the side as his catlike eyes observed her.
She tucked stray hairs behind her ear, the ends tickling her neck. "I really need to cut my hair again."
"Ugh, did you feel that quake last night?" Boruto grumped as he walked over, yawning into his hand.
"It was strange!" Mitsuki chirped, turning to his friend. "My parent said that he has never felt a natural earthquake like that before. It was… kind of worrying."
"Yeah, at first I thought Mom was doing some training again to get sleepy, but when I checked on her, she was dead asleep," Sarada murmured.
"Dad actually had to check if we were getting attacked again," Boruto chimed in with a sigh. "I wonder what's been causing all these earthquakes."
"It's so weird. We don't usually have this many quakes during the year," Sarada mused, taking her chin in her hand. "I wonder if Papa would know anything about it."
"My parent did not," Mitsuki supplied. "But your dad has the Rinnegan, right? Maybe he would be better suited for research."
She nodded, ignoring the uneasy feeling in her gut. Maybe it was just nausea.
"Say," Boruto's voice made her glance over, "how is… um,"
"She's fine." She shrugged, glancing down. "I've been having more headaches than usual, but she's pretty much silent."
She paused, then added, "Weird, considering you."
"Hey! I can be calm!" Boruto defended with a pout. "Right?! Mitsuki, back me up here!"
"You're a lot like the Nanadaime in his childhood, or that's what Uchiha-sama says." The boy offered with an innocent smile.
"That doesn't give me much!" He exclaimed. "Besides, you have a monster temper, you can't possibly talk about 'calm'!"
As soon as he said it, he stopped. Oh shit.
Sarada paused mid-step, slowly turning her head to smile sweetly at him over her shoulder.
"Ah," she said, her sakki spiking, "is that so."
Boruto gulped.
"I would run if I were you, Boruto-kun," Mitsuki helpfully supplied.
"Are you all packed for your mission tomorrow?" Sakura called from the other room.
"Yes!" Sarada called back, standing up straight and looking at her pack. Checked against her list, she should have everything ready; changes of clothes, a blanket, food rations, a med kit, panty liners…
She nodded once more, firmly. That should do it.
She turned and walked out of her room, heading towards where she heard her little brother babbling. She smiled when she walked into the kitchen, watching Kaede talk to their mother as she sat down to the table.
"Wada!" Kaede cheered as she walked in. "Food!"
"Yeah, food," she agreed, giving him a pat on the head as she sat down. "Looks good, Mama!"
Her mother smiled and nodded. "Well, today is a big day."
Sarada looked at her, confused, for a moment, before her gaze trailed down to her mother's belly and her eyes widened. "You found out whether it's a boy or a girl?"
She nodded excitedly, reaching into the pocket of her sweatpants and pulling out pictures. As she handed them to Sarada, she turned to Kaede and beamed. "You're gonna have a little sister, Kaede! Isn't that fun?"
"A girl?" Sarada echoed in excitement as she looked over the pictures. "Really?"
"Oh, Sasuke-kun is going to be excited," she sighed, clasping her hands together.
"A girl," Sarada whispered, staring at the image of the fetus again. Taking in every little detail. Staring at the date.
Tears began to gather in her eyes as she looked up at her mother. "Mama…"
"Are you alright?" She asked, concerned, as she leaned forward to wipe them away..
"I'm just… happy," she confessed with a little sniffle. She took off her glasses and swiped under her eyes. "I've always wanted a little sister."
"I've always wanted a granddaughter!" She giggled, her cheeks rosy with excitement. "Isn't that fun! I do hope she inherits more of Hinata's side of the family than, well…"
The two ladies giggled at that, while Kaede fist-pumped the air, exclaiming, "Yes! Imouto!"
Boruto sighed to himself as he flopped onto his bed, his cheeks still bruised and purple. "Geez, she still hits hard… if anything, she hits harder. I wonder how Uncle Sasuke can deal with Auntie Sakura's mood swings…"
He closed his eyes. The last time Sakura had had vicious mood swings she had nearly walloped his dad at the training grounds. Of course she had apologized and healed him, but after that he was more apprehensive to doing spars with her. That woman could pack a nasty punch.
How did Uncle Sasuke deal with it? Is it just because they're married?
His phone vibrated in his pocket, and he startled a bit before reaching for it. Fishing it out, he found a text from Sarada. Mama's having a girl.
His eyes widened. He typed back, Wow congrats.
All she sent was a smiley face in return, and that got him thinking about their own kid. He turned onto his back, staring at the ceiling. He was only 16 and already having a kid of his own. Not even his father had been that young. None of the original Konoha 11 were, actually - at least, not according to his parents or aunt. Then again, you don't exactly find a good time to get down and dirty during a world war.
16. He and Sarada were 16. It felt crazy to even think about, and yet here they were, on the cusp of adulthood, eager to get promoted to Jonin and make their own way into the shinobi world.
At first he'd been apprehensive about everything; what they did was an accident (he really should've looked for extra protection, he thought with a groan), and when he found out she was pregnant he really hoped she would get rid of it, mostly due to their career paths. Sarada had always expressed hope that she would one day get promoted to Jonin and become Hokage, and having a baby would all but destroy those plans. Hell, he still vaguely recalled times when his parents had to babysit Sarada for her mother because of her job.
But then she said she was gonna keep it… and what the hell was he to say? His mom had always taught him that other people's decisions were their own business, but this was literally life-changing. It's not like he could just abandon her either, what kind of a dad would he be if he abandoned his kid like his dad had essentially abandoned him for his job? The most he could do was try to support her, because although he was scared, he did still like her - and he still kind of felt guilty for knocking her up in the first place.
At least she wasn't that mad. He could live with some discomfort.
"Boruto," his mother called, "dinner!"
He slipped off his bed and to his feet, pocketing the device again. He'd have to have a serious conversation with her about the future of their relationship one of these days; it wouldn't do any good to be on the same team as a jilted ex who just so happened to be parenting your kid.
