Green clawed hands make their way into red, thick padded gloves. The sound of velcro hung in the air.
Left jab, right cross.
Left jab, right cross.
Left jab, left jab, right cross.
Left jab, right cross, left hook.
The boxing bag was hardly moving.
Beast Boy grunted.
Left jab, right cross, left hook, low kick.
Left jab, left jab, right hook, left kick, left kick.
Right jab, left hook, right jab, right jab, roundhouse kick.
The boxing bag was swinging at this point.
Beast boy did not stop. He breathed in air filling his lungs.
Left jab *huff*, left jab *huff*, right hook *huff*, left jab *huff*, roundhouse kick *hiss*
Left jab *huff*, right jab *huff*, right crescent kick *hiss*, spinning crescent kick *hi-yahhh*
Garfield started heaving as he heard slow soft claps from Robin. "Nice job Beast Boy, although you could use some work on your kicks remember to harness your inner kangaroo when doing those crescent kicks. The bag was swinging when you finished your spinning crescent kick however, as a superhero, it really needs to be flying at that point."
Garfield nodded in response, 'this was only day 1 and I'm getting my ass whipped by the punching bag'. He sighed and picked up his water bottle and took a few fast gulps of water before letting out another long sigh. "Thanks, Robin, I think I'll go get some breakfast now." He got his bags and was heading out when Robin grabbed his shoulder and said, "Beast Boy it has been less than 20 minutes, how do you expect to build strength if you do not have endurance or stamina?" Beast Boy groaned, "But duuuude, I didn't sign up for boot camp, I signed up for-" Robin interrupted, "You signed up for your physical well-being and to get better if you want to push yourself you need to pass your comfort zone and if you can walk and talk to me after training, that is a sign that you're not tired enough."
Robin took his bags and put it in the locker and faced Beast Boy and pointed to the floor. Beast Boy's eyebrow shot up, puzzled. Robin smirked, "Believe it or not mixed martial arts is not all fighting, it's also floor work, so give me five rounds of 20 reps of push-ups, sit-ups, mountain climbers, followed by 25 reps of weighted pull-ups and 3 minutes of holding a plank." Beast Boy gulped, "I- sorry what do you mean FIVE ROUNDS?" He looked up at the masked leader and saw he was not budging. Garfield whined and got down on his hands and feet and started counting.
His muscles were twitching around his fourth round, his eyes, forest green now turned to a deep oak as he pushed his way through this workout. His lips quivered with pain and sweat dripped past his sculpted cheeks to the edge of his chin where it clung until it fell. His hot clammy hands started slipping on the cold concrete floor of the gym as he started internally yelling for the Beast in him to stop getting angry.
The Beast stopped him from reaching his full potential, and only Beast Boy was aware of this. Ever since his discovery of the Beast when Raven was in trouble, in fights he found himself holding back from his more powerful animals because it tended to stir and awaken the Beast. This happened when Beast Boy felt powerful emotions and at this very moment when his body was certainly pushed to his limits.
Now on his final round, he started feeling numb and started losing his thoughts to someone greater than him. A shift in his aura as darkness spread across his face. The Beast gave a low trembling growl as he now did pull-ups with ease.
Robin who was talking with Starfire at the door of the gym turned and looked at Beast Boy's darkened face and he ran to him. "Beast Boy! You cannot transform to the Beast to complete your training, that is cheating, turn back NOW." Beast Boy hollered "DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO BOY WONDER, I DON'T APPRECIATE YOU YELLING AT ME LIKE I'M A KID." Starfire ran to Robin's side and pleaded with Beast Boy, "Please Beast Boy be understanding, Robin is only making the common of the senses, he does not wish to upset you!" Beast Boy looked at her puzzled and the forest green orbs started to resurface and grace his green complexion again. "I- uh what are you staring at dudes?" Starfire looked beyond mad and Robin's head tilted. "You were as the people of Tamaran would say being a clorbag varblernelk!" Starfire said fuming. Robin touched her shoulder and said "Starfire could you leave us alone for a moment", Starfire nodded and flew out of the gym.
Few seconds of silence passed as beast Boy looked down at his feet and shuffled awkwardly, "It was the Beast, wasn't it?" Robin sternly responded, "no Beast Boy, it was you. You cannot be blaming the Beast for his actions, you need to be in control of him, he is apart of you. You're not apart of him, do you understand me?" Beast Boy nodded and stood up and was just about to leave with his bag when Robin said, "You know who can help you control him? She will understand and be a better trainer than I will." Beast Boy turned and touched his shoulder and walked away.
He reached the door and hesitated for a second before the door creaked opened revealing violet orbs. Raven looked at the changeling up and down. Her eyes rested on his body, his pectorals glistening and inviting but quickly catching herself from looking any lower her eyes met his.
Beast Boy smiled weakly, her checking him out almost going unnoticed. He shook the thought from his head focussing on the more pressing issue at hand, a look of concern washed over his face, "Raven I need your help."
Yes, this was an action-packed chapter, I did have to do some research on Muay Thai and boxing for this chapter, I think I'm happy with it! What do you guys think? The next chapter and onwards will start building upon Raven and Beast Boy's friendship and focus on building their characters up before getting into fluff in the near future.
