Over The Rainbow

A/N For anyone who is reading/has read "Spirit Caller"

YES. This story is canon to Connar's story!

"Over The Rainbow" is a side story that takes place about 3 years BEFORE she started Duel Academy. It places itself during the summers and time she spent at Duel Prep School. As such: IT CONTAINS SPOILERS.

So. Spoiler Warning. Enjoy^^

It has been a long and cold autumn since the term began. Zane and Atticus were now gone, off on their first year at the Prestigious Duel Academy, the go-to school that everyone who was attending this Duel Prep School was hoping to get into. That was the goal anyway. Connar had no choice in the matter. She was going to Duel Academy anyway, no matter how poorly she did on her exams here. Not that she ever did poorly. She had a strict home education and it rubbed off on her study habits during her time at Duel Prep School so she pretty much aced everything with ease. What she was more looking forward to rather, was the holiday and summer breaks when she and Jesse had more time to talk to each other. Especially the summers.

"Earth to Connar!" Chazz Princeton scoffed as he gave her a nice audible pop in the head with a rolled up study guide,"If you don't pay attention to our studies you're going to fail the next exam!"

"Ow!" she let out a whimper,"How can I possibly fail when I'm 3 chapters ahead!?"

"Oh..." Chazz blinked, a soft rose color hitting his cheeks as he averted his gaze awkwardly.

She's ahead of me!?

Maybe I better step my game up...

He blinked.

"Fine, so then rather than spending our study hall studying why don't we pass our time with a game?" he smirked as he waved his deck and placed it on the desk.

"Oh...sure...okay." she said, giving him a light smile as she put her phone away in exchange for her deck as well.

Their fellow classmates gathered around watching as the game heated up between them. This was generally how Connar and Chazz would pass their time if they felt they were ahead in the lessons. Which most times they usually were, so they dueled quite often. It was always a heated match. Solid and easy to tip either way. Connar however would start fidgeting the longer the games progressed.

Jesse...

She would whimper his name softly to herself as she tried to focus on her moves.

I feel like the voices of the spirits only got stronger ever since I met you...

She sighed and held her head, wincing in pain as she played.

"Connar...are you okay?" Chazz would ask throughout the game when he would notice her changing gestures.

"Is it just me? Or does it seem like Connar always wimps out during the end of her duels?" asked Jasmine.

"Yeah, especially when she's losing!" said Mindy.

"Can it, you two!" Alexis would snap. Though it was rather concerning. Even to Alexis. But she didn't feel like it was purposeful, or that she was using it as an excuse to weasel out of a duel or act like a sore loser. Something seemed to genuinely be bothering Connar. And she seemed to genuinely be physically hurting.

"Ah...y-yes I'm fine." Connar said between heavy breaths from the wincing pain of a migraine caused by countless voices that she fought herself to keep locked away inside,"I will now activate my two trials of the princesses from my hand in order to upgrade my White and Ebon Magicians Pikeru and Curran...in order to summon out Princess Pikeru and Princess Curran." she stated, "And as I wage my attack, a spell caster is declaring an attack, which means I can activate the Magician's circle! Allowing us both to summon a spell caster from our deck with 2000 points or less, and the spell caster I choose is my Dark Magician Girl!"

Jasmine and Mindy both gasped as Connar turned the game around with a simple flip of a card.

"Wow that was a good move!" said Alexis,"With that kind of fire power, Connar you might just win this time!"

"Yeah, a good move." Chazz shrugged with a smirk as he flipped the trap card Magic Cylinder,"But not good enough~"

"Oh no...the rest of my life points." Connar chuckled as she facepalm,"You won again Princeton..." she giggled,"You're the best!"

"Yeah, I know it." he scoffed with a grin as he reshuffled his deck and began to pack his stuff before the bell,"And you're getting better." he stated,"Spend a little more one on one time with your deck and a little less time phone with you boyfriend." he huffed.

"H-huh?" she blushed," M-My boy-OOh I...I dunno if we're anything like that-"

So there actually IS a boyfriend!?

Chazz thought to himself.

Dammit...if she's crushing on someone else it won't be easy for me to 'move in' on her like they want me to...

He sighed. His brother's plan was to have him warm her up, get her to like him and increase the possibility of marriage to grant Princeton Legal right to Kaiba's dowry...

Though he couldn't see himself doing something like that now...not after spending so much time with her.

It felt...sickening.

Especially when considering the pink haired girl's innocence to all of it.

He felt dirty.

Yet somehow at the same time he also felt bothered by the possibility of her getting close to someone else. It was a mess of confusion he didn't understand and felt better off avoiding.

"Wow Connie, you seriously have a boyfriend!?" Mindy squealed,"Tell us about him!? Is he cute? Do you have any pictures~?"

Chazz's discomfort with this conversation was apparent, and he felt annoyed. and Alexis noticed this too, and acted quickly.

"That's enough, Mindy!" Alexis huffed as she tugged her friend by the ear and started to pull her off,"Good game, Connar." she said with a smile,"See you tomorrow."

I'm not sure what sort of relationship those two have...

Alexis thought to herself.

But clearly they share some kind of connection and we should tread carefully about how we talk about certain things around them...

She sighed, giving an awkward smile as she waved.

"Uh...yeah..." Connar said softly, waving back.

"Hmph...I'm heading off too." said Chazz as he tossed his bag over his shoulder.

"O-Oh, uh...w-wait!" Connar stammered as she called out to Chazz and reached for him, gripping the back of his uniform.

"Huh?" he blushed slightly and gulped glancing back.

"Y-yeah...? What's up?"

"W-well I was just..." she blinked and gave a soft sigh,"Maybe you would like to go somewhere...?"

"S-Somewhere? You and me? " he blinked,"You mean...outside of school?"

He didn't know how to respond. Were they even friends?

He shook his head.

"Uhh...sorry. But I'm busy!" he stated,"Maybe next time!" He said and took off quickly.

"R-Right of course!" she said softly as she waved,"...Okay." she sighed as she watched him wander off and heaved a heavy sigh.

He said that last time too...

She sighed sadly.

He says that every time.

The two of them spent a lot of time together on school grounds...but never outside of school. And since Zane left, she hasn't seen her old friend Syrus couldn't get into the Prep School so she only saw less of him once Zane moved up. She sat alone now in an empty classroom.

Papa and Uncle Mokey are away...

She thought to herself.

So I don't have anyone waiting at home for me either...

Her eyes narrowed and slowly darkened...as the negative thoughts of loneliness took over her, the voices in her mind of the thousand spirits only got louder. She cupped her hands over her ears trying to silence them all and will them all away.

"Are you lonely?"

She gasped and shook her head violently to shake away that single voice that always stood out above the many.

No...I'm not...

She thought to herself.

I'm okay...So please just go away...!

Please...go away...

Vzzt Vzzt

"Huh!?" she gasped softly and pulled her phone out met with a message of heart emojis and Jesse Anderson's fish face which made her giggle and suddenly all of the Spirit voices silenced themselves and she felt calm once again.

...I'm okay.

She thought to herself, and smiled softly.
