Episode 2: Festival
Waking up with the alarm going off, Pacey slam his fist down at the alarm to stop the annoying sound from filling his room. Why on earth would his father want him to wake up so early just to do the yard work, is beyond him? Wanting to go back to sleep, Pacey pull the plug out of the socket so the alarm wouldn't go off again. Then he lay his head back down on the pillow as he pull the cover up over his head. As soon as he got comfortable and just about to fall asleep, Doug Witter barge into his room.
"Wake up, little brother, you know what time it is. Dad wants us out there ASAP so let's get a move on! I don't have all day," Doug said as he took a sip of his coffee.
Mumbling, Pacey is so tired that if it was up to him - he would stay in bed all day. "Go away, Doug. I'm pretty sure you can start without me."
Sighing, Doug is already sick of Pacey laziness. All he want to do is get through this day without any conflict. With Pacey already starting to be a problem is not helping much. If only he would just get out of that bed and do what he's suppose to do then he will have the rest of the day to be lazy. But no. He want to make things worse by being difficult.
"Pacey, I'm warning you. Get out of that bed now and meet me outside." With that Doug left his room without a backward glance.
Sitting up in his bed, Pacey sigh to himself as he realize that he is not going to get any sleep anytime soon. Pulling the covers off of him, he got out of the bed and proceeded to get ready.
It has been a long morning as the sun begun shining up at the horizon. Pacey had just finish the last set of the yard work and happy to be done for the day. Looking up from what he was doing, Pacey spotted Doug coming out of the house with two bottles of water in his hands. As he approach Pacey, Doug handed him one of the bottle. Without hesitation, Pacey quickly took the bottle from Doug and release the cap as he took a huge sip of water. Watching his little brother, Doug chuckle to himself as he took a sip himself.
Sitting there in silence for a moment as they enjoy their bottle of cold water; Doug looked over at Pacey as he realize that something has been on his mind.
Breaking the silence Doug wanted to know what's been bugging his brother. "What's up, Pacey? I can tell that something's been on your mind."
Stopping on his track as he held the bottle of water to his lips, Pacey slowly place the bottle down as he looked at his brother. Noticing the look on his face, Pacey knew that he had to confide with his brother. There is no way that Doug is going to let this go.
"There's this girl," Pacey said as he looked over at Doug, "I have fallen deeply in love with her and she doesn't even notice."
Shocked by his brother confession, Doug want to know who is this girl that have stolen his brother's heart. Voicing his thought, Doug asked, "Who is this girl?"
"I rather not say, but it doesn't matter. She's into someone else."
Shaking his head, Doug looked at Pacey with disbelief. "Well, have you told this girl how you feel?"
Looking at him, Pacey simply said, "No."
"Why not?"
"Because it could ruin everything! Besides, it's better off this way. That way no one will get hurt and save a lot of heartache."
Shaking his head, Doug said, "I don't believe that. You never know, Pacey, unless you try. Fight for her! Tell her how you feel!"
"You don't think I don't know that! Believe me I've thought about it! But the facts remain the same. She has feelings for someone else," he yelled.
Breathing heavily both boys looked on at each other as they try to calm themselves down. To be honest, Pacey is surprised with himself for even admitting his true feelings for Joey. He never thought that he would admit it to himself let alone his brother. He was right about one thing. If he say anything about his feelings for Joey - this could change everything. Quite frankly, he's not sure if he's ready for that. Which is the reason why he is willing to step back and let life take it's course. If he and Joey are truly meant to be together ... then they will find their way to each other. It's just as simple as that.
Not wanting to waste any more time, Doug wants his brother to be happy. And he believes that this girl - whoever she is - just might be the one who would make him happy. "Pacey, I'm only going to say this to you once. You have to tell her how you feel."
Finishing off the last touch of editing his video, Dawson couldn't wait till school starts so he could show off his latest video to Mr. Gold. This school year Dawson had applied to take film class in Mr. Gold's classroom. He is told that Mr. Gold is one of the best film teacher in Capeside High. With school approaching next week, Dawson want to get going on his video to make sure it is good enough for Mr. Gold to see. When he was finish auditing the video, Dawson put everything away as he headed outside.
Looking around, Dawson spotted the person he was looking for. Smiling to himself from ear-to-ear there sat Jen Lindley at the docks. Walking over to her, Dawson joined her.
Smiling up at him, Jen noticed Dawson sitting beside her. She couldn't stop thinking about that almost kiss they shared last night. Then to top it off, Dawson had basically told her that he wanted her to be his girlfriend. Of course, she comply by answering 'yes.' From what she can tell, Dawson seem like a great guy. And she would like to get to know more about him.
"So?" Dawson said not sure on what to say next.
"So ..." Jen said as she smile over at Dawson.
"That was some night last night, huh?" He joked as he smile back over at her.
Jen laughed as she nodded her head. "Yeah, it was."
"So I was thinking," Dawson said as he want to move on with the next subject, "Capeside is having this festival today. They do this every year before school starts. I want to know if you would be interested in joining me to the festivities?"
Sounding like it could be fun, Jen wasted no time answering back. "Yeah, that sounds great. I would love to go with you."
Happy that she agreed to go, Dawson gave out a sigh of relief. Just like last night, he was nervous to ask her out again. She was all he could think about. He couldn't wait to see her again. To see her smile. To see her beautiful face. And now that she had agreed to go to the festival with him - he couldn't wait to show her off. He wanted everyone to see that Jen Lindley is his.
Looking over at her, Dawson couldn't help the urge to want to kiss her. That was all he could think about. Kissing her. Looking down at her lips he could see how perfectly shape her lips are. They were very plumb and from the looks of it - kissable. Licking his lips subconsciously, Dawson kept staring down at her lips.
Realizing that he was focusing on her lips, Jen did the same by licking hers as her eyes focus on his. Ever since last night Jen wanted to know what it would feel like to have his lips pressed to hers. She even fantasies kissing him or him kissing her. Either way, it turned out great. But she crave for the real thing. He looked like the type that knows how to kiss a girl. Not the sloppy kind like some guys do that try to shove their tongue down her throat every time she kiss a guy. No. Dawson was different. She could tell. When he kiss a girl - it would be meaningful and passionate. He would take his time exploring her lips as she would explore his. Their lips would match together as they danced with one another. It would be perfect.
Noticing the palm of his hand resting on her cheek, Jen lean further into his touch as she looked at him in the eye. As they both sat there staring at one another, they both slowly start moving in towards each other. Getting closer to each other with their lips merely an inch away, Jen could feel his breath on her lips. Fighting the moan from escaping her mouth, Jen knew that once their lips touch it is going to be epic.
Just when their lips were about to touch, Jen's grandmother called out for her. Jumping away from each other, Jen gave Dawson an apologetic look as she stood up and went to check on what her Grams wanted. As Dawson just sat there staring off in space thinking 'this could not be happening again.'
Walking into the house, Dawson notice his parents on the living room floor sucking each others face. To his surprise he did not expect to see them in that position. "Ewe, come on! Mom ... dad ..." he said as he try to avoid seeing his father's hand down his mother's shirt.
Trying really hard to straighten themselves up, Mitch and Gail stood up quickly surprise to see their son standing there. In the process of getting up, Mitch forgot that he had his hand down Gail's shirt when he realize that his pants are down to his ankles. In the process of pulling his pants up, Mitch accidently tore Gail's shirt exposing her breasts for the world to see. All the while, Dawson who seem to be scared for life, try to run out of the living room as fast as he can.
Leaving the two of them alone in a very awkward position. Mitch turn to look at Gail. "So ... that happened."
All Gail could do is sigh as she slap her hand to her forehead while holding her shirt tightly together with her free hand. Wanting to change into new clothes, Gail ran upstairs to their bedroom looking for a nice outfit to wear.
Walking into the kitchen, Mitch spotted Dawson at the table with a glass of orange juice in his hand. Looking over at his son, Dawson was avoiding eye contact to his father. The whole situation was awkward enough, he didn't want to have "the talk" with his father now. All he want to do is get through this day without any more weirdness and go to the festival with Jen. That's all he want to do.
Sensing his son avoiding eye contact, Mitch walk over to the cabinet to grab a glass so he could pour himself a glass of orange juice. All the while doing so he kept his eyes focus on his son. Watching as Dawson continue on staring off in space while taking a sip out of his glass, Mitch couldn't take it anymore as he find this whole situation being ridiculous.
"Dawson, you're going to have to say something eventually," Mitch said as he looked at his son.
Looking over at his father, Dawson gave a little laugh. "Say what? That I found both my parents at each other like rabbits?"
Sighing as he look over at his son, Mitch knew that Dawson was going to give him a hard time about this. Pulling up a chair, Mitch sat down across from his son. Sitting there in silence for a few seconds, Mitch kept his eyes on his son. As he look at him - he wonder what is the big deal? It's not like Dawson haven't caught them in that situation before. The only difference is - he saw more than he bargain for.
"Dawson? Are you really mad at me for wanting to be with your mother?"
Shocked by his question, Dawson looked at his father. "God, no dad. That's not it at all. I just think ... well could you at least do it in your bedroom?" he asked.
Smiling as he realize what the problem was, Mitch didn't actually thought how much this could effect his son. "Oh, Dawson, I am so sorry. We thought that you would be gone for the day. We didn't expect you to come home and see us like that."
Dawson knew he kind of over reacted a little. It's not like this is his first time that he had caught his parents in action. But to see his mother's breasts! That is where he had to draw the line.
"It's ok. But could you at least next time keep it n the bedroom?"
Smiling, Mitch nodded his head in agreement.
Just then, Gail came downstairs and join the guys in the kitchen as the phone ring. Getting up from his seat, Mitch walk over to the phone and picked it up. Realizing who it was, Mitch look over at Gail.
"Gail, it's for you. It's Bob," he said as he handed the phone over to her.
Gail grabbed the phone and took a moment before she spoke. All the while, Mitch kept his eyes on her. As if reading his mind, Gail looked over at him as she cover the mouth piece of the phone. "It's nothing. He just want to go over some strategy for work. I don't need to come in today," she said.
Happy to know that that call wasn't for his wife to go in to work, Mitch proceeded to walk in the living room. He had plan to go to the festival with his wife tonight and didn't want any interruptions. He noticed how much Gail has been working lately, so he had hope that tonight he could at least spend some time with her. On his way to the living room, to his surprise, he ran into Joey.
"Hey, Joey. You looking for Dawson, he's in the kitchen," Mitch smiled at the young girl who he had always saw as a daughter to him.
Giving him her best smile, Joey said, "Thanks." Then she proceeded to head in the kitchen.
When she got there she saw Dawson sitting at the table as he kept looking on at his mother while she talked on the phone. Walking up to him, Joey had pulled out the chair that Mitch was just sitting at. Looking on at him, Joey wonder what is up with him? Turning her head towards Gail, she saw nothing out of the ordinary. All she saw is Gail talking happily on the phone to whomever it is on the other line.
Wanting to get his attention, Joey turn back towards Dawson. "Dawson? What's going on?" she asked as he kept his focus on his mother.
After a few minutes, Dawson replied. "Look at her, Jo. She looks so happy," he said.
Not understanding what the problem is, she always thought that being happy was a good thing. "Dawson, you're not making sense," she reasoned.
Studying his mother on the phone, Dawson thought it best to explain to Joey what the problem is. "She's talking to Bob -"
"Bob? As in her co-anchor Bob?" she interrupted ignoring the fact how he had express Bob's name.
Nodding his head, he said, "That's the one. I think she's having an affair with him."
Eyes wide open, Joey looked at Dawson then turn her head to look at Gail. This is crazy. Why would Gail cheat on Mitch? It just doesn't make any sense.
Turning back to Dawson, Joey could tell that he really believe that his mother is having an affair. "This isn't the movies, Dawson. Stop trying to find something that's not there," she said.
Taking his eyes off of his mother for the first time since she walked in the kitchen, Dawson looked over at Joey. "Jo, I'm not making this up."
"Did you actually see the two of them together," she asked.
Dawson just shook his head.
"Then why would you think your mother is having an affair?"
Turning his head back to look at his mother, Dawson went on to say, "Because look at her. Notice her gesture. The way she talk. Her facial expression. See how happy she looks. It's as if she is flirting with him right now."
Watching on as Gail talked on the phone, she could see why Dawson would think that. But she don't believe that Gail would jeopardize her family like that. It would be stupid of her to cross that line. Surely she would be smart enough not to do that.
Wanting to change the topic, Joey turn back to Dawson. "Hey, can we go to your room? We need to talk," she said as he turn to look at her.
Nodding his head as he is willing to let his thoughts of his mother possibly having an affair go for now. Dawson stood up as he lead the way to his bedroom. To come to terms, he did wanted to speak with Joey about her behavior last night. He did wonder what has gotten into her but he is soon about to find out.
Walking into his room, Joey close the door behind her. Standing there for a moment, Joey watched as Dawson sat at his desk. Rooted on her spot, Joey couldn't move as she realize how hard this is. She can't actually tell him her feelings for him. Not with knowing that he has feelings for someone else. Looking over at him, Dawson was playing with his cube. She noticed that he was waiting for her to say something. Clearing her throat, Joey found her strength as she walk over toward his bed and sat on the edge as she face him.
Slowly looking up at him, she saw him looking back at her as she let out a huge sigh. "I know I have been acting strange last night," she started.
Leaning back in his chair, Dawson put the cube back on his desk. "Why were you acting so strange?" he asked.
"There was this new girl in town and I was afraid," she said.
"Afraid of what?" he asked.
"I was afraid that she was going to take my best friend away," she said not admitting the whole truth. In reality she was afraid. She was afraid of losing him completely to someone else. Dawson had always been there for her when she needed someone the most. When her mother died, he was there for her when she needed a shoulder to cry on. He was there for her when her father was sent to prison. He had been there for her every step of the way. So to have some girl come along and take all that away from her is unacceptable.
Looking on at her, Dawson couldn't believe what she was saying. "Joey. You are not going to lose me. No one could never take me away from you. You know that. Don't worry. I promise you. I'm not going anywhere," he said reassuringly.
Smiling as she looked at him, she started to feel like she had almost believed him. Like there could be a shimmer of hope for the both of them to be together. But looking at him now she could tell there is more. The look on his face show that there is something else he wanted to say.
"Joey, with that being said. There is something that I want to tell you." There it is. The moment she was dreading. She knew it was impossible for him to share the same feelings she felt. Not wanting this to ruin her chance of happiness with Dawson; Joey thought it best to try and suck it up and be happy for him. She watched as he looked at her as if he was trying not to hurt her. "Jen and I are together. It happened last night after the movies when we walked home together. I'm sorry, Jo. But like I said, this doesn't have to change things. I will always be around whenever you need me."
But it won't be the same, she thought as she tried to fight back her tears that were threatening to come out. This is it. She knew it. It may not seem like it to him now but she knows that things are not going to be the same. He will spend all his time and energy on her. She is going to be his main focus for now on.
Looking at him as she could see concern written all over his face, Joey thought it best to hide her hurting feelings as she put on a fake smile to show that she is ok with it. "That's okay, Dawson. I'm happy for you. I know that you will always be there for me," she lied.
Glad to hear that she approve, Dawson stood up from his chair as he walk the short distance over to Joey. In the process, he grab a hold of her arms as he pull her up and proceeded to wrap his arms around her as he gave her a hug.
Shock by his action, Joey stood there rooted for a while before she reacted by responding back as she threw her arms around him and hugged him back. They stayed in their spot like that for a while until they felt it was necessary to let go.
Smiling on at each other, Dawson thought about the festival that Capeside was having. "Hey, Joey. I was wondering are you going to the festival?" he asked hoping to see her there.
Thinking about it for a bit, Joey thought it best to sit this one out. "I don't think so. I'm working at the Ice House today and I'm pretty sure that it is going to be very busy," she said as she looked at him apologically. It is true, she did have to work today and besides she didn't want to have to see Dawson and Jen being together the whole time while she feel like the third wheel. That is not going to happen!
Looking at the time on her watch, Joey realize that it is almost time for her to get to work. Looking back up over at Dawson, she said, "Speaking of, I've promise Bessie that I would be there on time. Sorry, Dawson, but I have to go," she said as she rushed out of his room.
Today was a busy day at the Ice House and many people from out of town came to Capeside for the festival. Running around from table to table, Bessie was currently taking orders from a couple, who from the looks of it, are newlyweds very much in love. As she watch the two of them, she couldn't help a bit of envy flowing through her. The way they kept looking lovingly at each other and holding hands - made her thought about her future with Bodie. As of late she is currently carrying his child. He is living with her but they never really talked about where their relationship is heading. Looking at the couple now, Bessie realize that she want what they have. She could see herself happily married to Bodie as they raise a family. She love Bodie and he have been a wonderful boyfriend to her. He has been there for her when her father was sent away to prison leaving her to raise Joey on her own. Being young herself, Bessie had no clue on how to raise her younger sister on her own. She was afraid that she was going to screw up. Thankfully, she had Bodie. Knowing the problem she was going through with her family, Bodie stepped in and offer to help her out. He was great to say the least. He moved in with them and helped her with raising Joey. To be honest, he was really good at it. It was as if it came natural to him.
Joey became really fond of him. She watched as the two grew closer and she would pretend that they were a family. As if, Joey was their daughter while she and Bodie were a married couple. Bessie never told Bodie this because she was afraid that she might scare him off. Not wanting that to happen and wanting to hang on to him, she said nothing as she kept her feelings to herself. Watching Bodie with Joey made her realize what a great father he will be. And when she found out that she was pregnant - she was both excited and terrified at the same time. She was excited because she always wanted to have a family with Bodie. She love him so much that she couldn't see herself happy with anyone else but him. She was also terrified because she didn't know how he was going to take the news. To her surprise, when she was finally brave enough to confront him about it - he was thrilled. He took the news very well and couldn't wait to become a father. She knew she shouldn't be all too surprise considering, but she couldn't help but feel that he was going to be disappointed. She didn't know why she felt that way - she just thought that maybe he wasn't ready for that commitment yet. He proved her wrong.
Thinking about it now, why is she so afraid to talk to him about their future? Deep down, she know that everything is working out fine now. Why ruin that? There is no rush. They have plenty of time ahead of them to want to take that next step. Right now, all she should be caring about is carrying a healthy bay that is growing inside of her. Then the rest could come later.
Walking over to the kitchen area to give out the orders that the couple at table six had ordered, Bessie noticed Pacey Witter walking up toward her.
"Joey's not here yet, Pacey," she said before he could get a word out.
Giving her his famous smile, he replied, "That's fine. I'll just wait here till she shows up. Do you know how long she will be?"
Looking over at the clock hanging on the wall, Bessie turned back to Pacey, "She should be here by now. She had went over to Dawson's earlier," she said not realizing that her last statement had effected Pacey.
With the mention of Dawson, Pacey had stiffen a little. He knew he shouldn't worry but he also couldn't help but to wonder what Joey was doing over at Dawson's? He knew that the two had their differences last night. So maybe she went over to patch things up with him. Whatever it is, he hoped to God that he would still have a chance with her. Thinking about what Doug said to him earlier, he realize that his brother was right. He have to tell her how he feels. He have to tell her that he love her. He couldn't keep his feelings hidden any longer. Which is why he came here. He wanted to talk to her. Knowing that she would be working today, he wanted to find a way to get her alone so he could talk to her about his feelings. And if things go as plan, then maybe he would take her to the festival as a date.
Looking around the Ice House, Pacey realize that his plan may not go as smoothly after all. It's like the universe is turning against him. The place was totally packed! There is no way he could get Joey alone for them to talk! Oh well. At least he tried. Besides, there is still the Dawson issue that is floating around. Deciding to give it up and walk away, Pacey told Bessie that he is leaving and to tell Joey that he will see her later.
"Why don't you tell her that yourself," she said as she pointed her finger behind him revealing Joey walking up towards them.
Turning around to see her coming towards them, Pacey couldn't help but to smile. God, she is beautiful, he thought as he watch her maneuver around the crowd of people.
When she finally reached them, Joey spotted Bessie standing behind the counter with Pacey on the opposite side standing in front of her. "Bessie, I'm so sorry that I'm late. I didn't realize the time," Joey rushed out.
"Don't worry about it, Jo. I have it covered. I knew how busy this place was going to be today so I took on more help. It's fine," she said reassuringly as she saw the worried look on her sister's face.
Calming down a bit, Joey was happy to see that her sister wasn't having a fit. Realizing that Pacey was standing beside her, she turned to face him. "Pacey, what are you doing here," she said not meaning for it to come off as sounding rude.
Hearing the bell ring for her tables order is ready, Bessie quickly turn to grab the order as she walked up to the couple from earlier.
Watching Bessie as she seem to be struggling with the tray in her hands, Joey mentally kicked herself as she knew her sister shouldn't be working this hard in the state that she's in. Wanting to go over and help her sister out before she drops everything and fall over herself, she cut Pacey off as he was about to respond to her question. "Look, Pacey, I'm sorry. I have to go help Bessie. Maybe we could talk later," she said as she quickly walked off toward her sister.
Watching her as she move around hurriedly from table to table, Pacey finally gave up as he started to head out. Before he could leave the restaurant, Bessie grab a hold of him as she stopped him from leaving.
"And where do you think your going," she asked.
"I'm going home," he said, "this place is too crowded and I don't want to hold anybody up."
Looking at the young man standing in front of her whom she had grown fond of over the years, she knew that Pacey has feelings for her sister Joey. It was quite obvious that she didn't see how nobody else haven't noticed. She could tell by the way he looks at Joey when he thinks that no one else is watching. But she does. She noticed it. Wanting to help him out, Bessie thought it would be best to give Joey a time off as she try to convince Pacey to take Joey to the festival. She wasn't lying what she told Joey earlier. She did get more staff to help out at the Ice House.
"I have a proposition for you," Bessie said as she looked at Pacey with excitement in her eyes.
"What's the proposition," he asked curiously.
"How would you like to take Joey to the festival?"
Pacey looked at Bessie with a shock expression on his face. Is she for real, he mussed. Of course that is what he wanted to do but it is impossible! Have she totally forgotten that the Ice House is packed with customers?
As if she were reading this mind, Bessie went on, "Don't worry about the restaurant. Like I said before, I have it all covered."
Taking her word for it because deep down he really wanted to spend some alone time with Joey, Pacey agreed.
Scanning around the restaurant, Pacey spotted the person he was looking for. Walking up toward her, he notice her picking up dirty dishes from the table that is now vacant. Building up the nerve to speak to her for the first time since she showed up, Pacey decide to just dive right in.
Helping her with the dirty dishes, Pacey turned to her, "Hey, Joey, after we're done here, do you have a minute?"
"I can't talk right now, Pacey. This place is so busy right now," she said as she grabbed the bucket full of dirty dishes from him and hurried off to the kitchen.
Watching her every move as she scurried off, Pacey walked over towards Bessie in defeat.
Bessie was currently at the bar area cleaning the counter when she looked up and saw the look on Pacey's face as he silently told her that Joey would not budge. Shaking her head as she know her sister well, Bessie thought it would be best if she go and talk to her. On cue, Joey walked out of the kitchen as Bessie made a quick beeline over towards her. Grabbing a hold of her, Bessie caught her sister off guard as she untie her apron and took it off of her.
"Bessie, what are you doing," she asked.
"I told you that I have more help. We don't need you, Joey. Now go and have fun with Pacey at the festival," she urged.
"But -"
"I said go," she pushed on.
Pacey was thankful to Bessie at the moment as he gave her a thankful smile. Grabbing a hold of Joey's hand, Pacey pulled Joey with him out of the restaurant.
Wondering what had just happened, Joey was at a lost as she let Pacey lead the way. After a while, reality kicked back in as she freed herself from Pacey's grasped.
"Pacey, what is going on here? And where are you taking me?" she fired out questions from left to right.
"Okay, Jo, calm down," he said while holding his hands up in mock surrender. "Bessie and I thought it would be best if I take you to the festival," he said.
"Why would she think that?"
Pausing for a moment, Pacey wasn't sure how to answer that. "That is a good question. One you should run by with her later," he said as he proceed to grab a hold of her hand - again.
Not budging a bit, Joey took her hand back as she said, "Pacey, wait! What is going on here?"
Looking at her at that moment, Pacey almost came close to coming clean. He wanted to so badly tell her about his feelings. But he also know that now is not the right time to talk about that. He could tell that she is not ready to hear what he have to say. Not when she still have feelings for Dawson. The best thing he could do right now is push his feelings for her aside and become a good friend to her. Even when she wouldn't believe that he would all of a sudden act civil toward her.
Waiting for him to reply, Joey looked on at Pacey expectantly. She noticed something odd about him. He seem nervous. And what is with him being so nice all of a sudden? To be honest, it's starting to freak her out! She missed the old Pacey. The one that she couldn't stand being around. The one that would always make a mission to poke fun at her. She don't know why but she missed that side of him. It seem natural to be at each others throats. It define them. That's what they do. It has always been that way since she met him. That's all she ever know. But now standing here in front of him - it all seem off. When did everything start to change, she questioned when she realize that she have changed herself. Maybe this is all her fault. Maybe she is the reason why Pacey is acting so weird and Dawson has run off to another girl. Maybe there is something wrong with her. Or maybe Pacey just felt bad because he knows that she has feelings for Dawson and he doesn't return the same feeling. To hell with him! She doesn't need his pity! She just want things to go back the way they used to be. Is that so much for her to ask?
Pacey couldn't take the silence any longer. He has to say something. Anything but the truth. "You want to know what is going on?" he asked while looking at her.
Nodding her head, Joey said, "Yes!"
Blowing out a breath, Pacey compose himself as he try to think quick on what he is going to say. "It's all my fault. I asked Bessie if she could give you the night off," he said without looking at her this time.
"Why?" she asked.
There it is. The question he knew was coming. "Because believe it or not, I want to help you get Dawson," he lied.
Joey shook her head as she looked at him. "You're lying."
Pacey quickly looked at her. "No, I'm not. Jo, I really do want to help you," he said as every lie kept flying out of his moth. He felt sick. As much as this is hurting him for having to lie to her like that - he feel even worse for saying it.
"Well, I don't believe you. Why would you want to help me? What would you gain from this?" she asked.
"I don't know. I just thought that it would be interesting that my two best friends would finally hook up. You and Dawson have been dancing around this dance for quite some time now. I think it's about time you two tell each other how you feel," he said as he looked at the irony in the words he just said. Why can't he just take his own advice?
It is true. It's about time for her and Dawson to talk. That way it would be easy for him to know where he stand. If Dawson do share the same feelings for her, then he would learn to walk away. As much as it would hurt him - he would find a way to let her go. But, if he doesn't share the same feelings ... then all bets are off and its fair game. It would be the perfect opportunity for him to come clean. To finally admit to her the he - Pacey Witter - loves the one and only Joey Potter. It is the only way for them all to move forward.
Joey stood there as she kept her eyes on Pacey. There is something that he's not telling her. If what Pacey said is true, then why did Dawson pursue a relationship with Jen? Unless, Pacey have feelings for Jen himself and wants Dawson out of the way. That is the only thing that makes sense to her. Of course, Pacey have a thing for Jen. Why didn't she see that before?
"Oh, I get it. You like Jen."
"What?"
"Pacey, it's okay. You don't have to lie anymore. I get it. You want me to tell Dawson how I feel so that way you can get Dawson out of the way so you can hook up with Jen," said Joey.
Looking at her as if she had lost her mind, Pacey said, "No, Jo, that is not it. You don't it. You couldn't be more wrong."
"Pacey, come on! I saw the way you looked at her," Joey said.
Confused, Pacey didn't know what the hell she is talking about. "What are you talking about? What look?"
Sighing, Joey rolled her eyes as she went on, "The first day we met Jen, you and Dawson both have this love sick puppy dog look in your eyes. Tell me I'm wrong."
"You're wrong," he simply said.
"What?" she said not believing a word he said.
"You heard me. I said you're wrong. There was no puppy dog look in my eyes." If anything, that look was meant for her, not Jen. But he wouldn't dare admit that to her.
"Whatever you say, Pace," she said not wanting to get into it any further with him, "besides, your plan wouldn't work anyways. It's already too late. Dawson and Jen are an item now."
"What?" he asked shocked to hear that revelation. "When did that happen?"
By him acting the way he is by the news made her think that she wasn't wrong about his feelings for Jen after all. What made it worse is that she felt a pang of slight jealousy. What the hell is that all about, she mussed.
"Last night. He asked her out and she said yes," Joey said as she kept her eyes on him.
Pacey didn't know how to take the news at the moment. To him it was like a breath of fresh air. He didn't know if he should jump for joy or pretend to feel bad for her. All he could think about is the fact that he might have a chance to be with her after all. But something is still holding him back. Not wanting to ruin any chance he may have with her, Pacey thought it best that he would take things slow and see what happens.
"Oh, Jo, I am so sorry. I didn't know."
Shrugging her shoulders, Joey said, "It's okay. How would you know? I just found out about it myself."
At that moment, Pacey realize that he didn't have to pretend to feel sorry for her. He actually does! Seeing her like that made his heart sore. And what's worse is that she wasn't hurting over him, but someone else. That made him realize that whatever chance he thought he might have with her ... is non-existence. Joey would never look at him the way she looks at Dawson. It would always be Dawson. He would just have to try to accept that.
Joey didn't know what else to say as she looked at Pacey. Apparently the news have caught him off guard, also. She's not the only one who is hurting by this. Clearly, Pacey seem to be hurting too. As she continue to watch him, Pacey did something that she did not expect. Rooted on her spot for the second time, she watched as Pacey slowly walk up to her. Without a warning, he threw his arms around her as he pull her tight close to him. This is the second time today that she received a surprised hug.
Pulling back a little, Pacey looked down at Joey. He could tell that his actions had caught her off guard but he didn't care. He wanted to let her know that no matter what, he is there for her. He would always be there for her. Because the truth is, even if he never have a chance with her - he would always be that guy she could count on and come to for help. And he will always be there waiting.
The 23rd annual festival was packed this year. It looked as if the whole town of Capeside had attended. There were live music playing and people at the dance floor having a good time. There were lots of food stands and games to play. Children were running around everywhere as the parents are trying to keep up with them. There were to be a pie eating contest and a dance contest which will be held later tonight.
Once Joey and Pacey made it to the festival, they spotted Dawson and Jen over at the dance floor. Joey watched as they danced to the music. They were both goofing around as they looked happy and enjoying themselves. Dawson would every once in a while grab Jen and dip her. She would laugh out loud at his actions as they continue to get back to their silly little dance that they were sporting.
Joey would roll her eyes as she watch the two of them together.
Just when the music stopped, Dawson looked over and saw Pacey and Joey standing off to the side. Happy to see that she made it, Dawson grab a hold of Jen's hand as he walk them over to where Pacey and Joey are standing.
Joey prepare herself as she watch Dawson and Jen approach them.
"Joey, you've made it. What a surprise," he said as he then directed his attention toward Pacey. "And I see that you brought Pacey with you?"
They both looked at each other for a brief moment until Pacey stepped in. "Bessie gave Joey the day off and since I was already at the Ice House we thought that we should check out the festival," said Pacey.
Joey didn't say a word as she looked over at Dawson. Maybe this is a mistake, she mussed as she saw that Dawson and Jen are still holding hands. Just looking at the two of them together like that wasn't easy for her. Just like a few seconds ago when she watched the two of them on the dance floor. At that moment, Joey realize how serious their relationship is. That hurt. It hurt really bad.
"Well, we're glad you both came," Jen said as she smiled brightly at them.
Just then, Mr. and Mrs. Leery approach them as Joey was relieved to see them. She didn't want to spend another second acting like she was okay being around Jen. So, she was thankful that the Leery's showed up when they did. It was very hard for her to pretend to be nice to the girl.
When the Leery's came and greet the children, Pacey noticed that Mr. Leery have whip cream smear on the side of his face. Curious as to why there are whip cream there, Pacey asked, "Hey, Mr. Leery. Why do you have whip cream smear on the side of your face there?" He pointed to the spot where the cream show a slight line down from Mitch's sideburns. It was barely visible but could still tell that it's there.
Everyone looked at Mr. Leery and Mitch reached out his hand to the spot of the cream on his face as he looked over at Gail who was sporting a big grin on her face. Couldn't hold it in any longer, they both burst out laughing as if they have a secret to the mystery of the whip cream. Do they even want to know about this?
Not wanting a repeat of what happened earlier when he walked in on his parents, Dawson didn't want to know what kinky stunt his parents are pulling this time. Shaking his head in disgust, he looked at his parents willing them to not say a word.
Noticing the look on their son's face, they cease their laughter a bit as Gail walked over to one of the food stands nearby to grab a napkin. Then she walked back over toward her husband and proceed to wipe the remaining cream from his face.
"I thought I got it all. Thanks for pointing that out, Pacey," Mitch said.
"No problem," Pacey said as he continue to look at him curiously.
Mitch looked at Dawson as he held eye contact to him. "It's not what you think," he said.
Oh? Dawson thought as he looked at his.
"Your father was helping setting up for the pie eating contest when he - all of a sudden - didn't pay attention to where he was going, tripped over something and fell face smack into the pie," Gail stepped in to explain as she couldn't help the laughter threatening to come out again. "You should have seen it. It was hilarious!"
Laughing, Mitch said, "Yeah, well at the time it wasn't so funny."
Everyone joined in laughing including Dawson as they all pictured Mr. Leery falling face first into a pie.
It was getting dark as the sun was setting. The festival was still in full swing as more people started to arrive. The pie eating contest had passed two hours ago and some heavy set guy had won first place. Pacey had joined the contest as well and it was a sight to see him devour a whole pie. Even Mr. Leery had a good laugh watching him. He came in third place.
The dance contest was starting soon and many couples were signing up for the competition. Mr. and Mrs. Leery had signed up for the contest. They were going to do a tango piece. But to Joey's surprise, Dawson and Jen had decide to sign up as well. She have seen the two of them dance earlier. Not that she is judging or anything, but she don't see them stand a chance in this competition.
Pacey walked over toward Joey from the soft drink stand. Standing beside her, Pacey held out a small cup of soda to her.
Joey looked up over at his when she saw him held the cup to her. Giving him a small smile she softly said, "Thanks," as she took the cup from his hand.
Holding his eyes intently to hers, he muttered, "You're welcome."
Watching the whole thing being displayed, he walked up quietly from behind them as he startled them both from their shared little moment. Noticing the looks on their faces, Doug held up his hands in mock surrender as he laughed at the both of them.
"What are you doing here, Doug," Pacey asked exasperated.
Noticing the tone of his voice, Doug chose to ignore it. "I was just about to ask you the same thing, little brother," he said looking at him pointedly then gaze his eyes over directly at Joey.
Looking at his brother, Pacey knew exactly what Doug is implying. He didn't want Doug to know that Joey is the girl he was talking about earlier. Taking a sip from his drink uneasily, Pacey wanted to divert his attention elsewhere.
"I decided to come and check out the festival. No big deal. Didn't have any plans," he said stiffly.
"Um hmm," was all Doug said as he didn't buy it all the while focusing his eyes on Joey.
Feeling a bit uncomfortable, Joey noticed Doug kept eyeing her. What the hell is he looking at? Furrowing her brow, Joey glare up at him willing for him to stop staring.
Seeing the look she gave him, Doug smile to himself as he remove his gaze from her. He is starting to see what Pacey sees in her. The girl could be quite feisty. Knowing his brother, that is exactly the kind of girl Pacey likes. He's not stupid. He knows Joey is the girl Pacey was talking about from earlier. He noticed that when he was watching them from afar. The way Pacey was acting with her. His affection. The way he looks at her. And from what he could tell, she feels the same way. She may not know it yet but it's there. From what he observed he could tell that she's confused. She seem to be fighting some inner battle to keep her feelings at bay. He did remember Pacey mention that there is someone else. So maybe that is why she is trying so hard to keep her distance? Whatever it is, Doug knows that it's only a matter of time for them to talk it out. They have to tell each other how they feel. He had told Pacey to talk to her about his feelings. From the looks of things he could tell that they haven't had that discussion yet.
Tearing their attention away from the awkward moment, the announcer for the dance competition came on stage. Pacey was thankful as he quickly turn his attention to the announcer and listen intently to what the man was saying.
"I would like for all the dance competitors to grab a number as you all get ready for the competition," the announcer said as all the competitors line up to get their numbers.
Joey spotted Dawson and Jen along with Mr. and Mrs. Leery as they were standing in line waiting to get their number. She looked on at the other competitors. Some of them looked like they are professionals who just came from 'Dancing with the stars.' While others looked like they just want to have fun and not so professional like. She have seen some of the couples earlier practicing their dance moves. They were good. They were very good. They danced so smoothly and flawless like they have been doing it for years! She could tell that this competition is going to be very interesting this year.
Meanwhile, an hour and a half later ...
The dance competition is in full swing and Joey is at awe. Mr. and Mrs. Leery is currently dancing to their tango piece. They are really good. The way Mrs. Leery glide gracefully across the dance floor as she sway her hips from side-to-side and kick her long leg up as Mr. Leery grab a hold of them while he drag her across the floor, really wow the audience. She never thought the Leery's could dance like this. It was as if they were making love out there on the dance floor! The crowd went wild as they cheered them on. Joey looked over at Pacey with shock written all over her face and she saw that he was mirroring the same expression. She then turn her attention to Dawson and Jen as she saw that they too was surprised at what they are seeing. That this very moment, the Leery's had own the dance floor. With their big finish, they did the lift like in the movie 'Dirty Dancing,' as Mr. Leery held his wife up in the air over his head. The crowd erupted with cheer as they finished their dance piece.
The competition went on as some were successful while others was not so successful. Dawson and Jen did their dance piece and they were okay. They wasn't as good as Mr. and Mrs. Leery, but they were also surprisingly good. They did all their steps pretty well and if she were to be one of the judges, she would say that they were pretty average.
As the competition ended, the announcer announce the winners. Pacey and Joey watched intently as they listen closely to who the winners are. Just as she had suspected, the couples that she saw earlier who looked like they came from 'Dancing with the stars,' were the big winners as they got first place. But to everyone's surprise, Mr. and Mrs. Leery came in second place as Dawson and Jen were in sixth place.
After the dance competition had ended, everyone went on to do their own thing. Joey sat at a table as she listen to the band play a hard rock song which she assume was from the 80s. Pacey was sitting quietly with her. He looked over at her as he watch her sway with the music. Smiling to himself, all he could think about his how beautiful she looks. When the band stopped playing the rock song, they started to play a slow song. Looking over at her again, he noticed the sad look in her eyes. Sighing to himself, he stood up from his seat beside her. Looking up at him, Joey gave him a confused look as she saw held his hand out toward her.
Noticing the look she gave him, Pacey rolled his eyes playfully as he said, "Come dance with me."
"What?" Joey said as if he had just made a joke.
"Come dance with me," he repeated.
Sighing as she continue to look at him, she wondered what he was thinking at the moment, as she held her hand to his while he lifted her up out of her seat and walked them out on the dance floor.
Pacey pull Joey tightly close to him as he wrap one arm on the lower part of her back while his other hand held hers. Joey held her hand in his while her other free hand wrap up behind his shoulder. Resting her head on his shoulder, she close her eyes as the feel of being this close to him was soothing to her. When Pacey felt her head on his shoulder, he nuzzle his head in her hair as he inhale the sweet scent of wild strawberries. She smelt good. She smelt really good. He closed his eyes as he relinquish the smell of her. They moved in sync with the music as they enjoy being in each others arms. Joey couldn't deny this burning feeling at the pit of her stomach when she feel Pacey drawing small circles on the lower part of her back. What is wrong with her? Why is she feeling this way? And why do she like it?
Looking out through the crowd, Pacey spotted his brother Doug. He noticed the look Doug was giving him as he watch the two of them dance. Pacey knows that Doug had figured him out. But at this moment, he didn't care. He will find a time to talk to him about it later. Right now, he is enjoying having this dance with the girl he loves.
Joey kept her eyes closed as she enjoyed being in his arms. This is new to her. She never thought that she could feel this way with him. Being in his arms like this made her feel safe. Like she can count on him for anything. It's a scary feeling really. She always thought that Dawson is the only one who could make her feel this way. Not Pacey. This is a whole new change for them. It would be a whole lot easier if Pacey would just be the same old Pacey. The one that would always pick on her with every chance he gets. She miss that. She miss the old Pacey. This newfound nicer version of him is really starting to freak her out! What is he doing to her? This is all so confusing.
Pacey watched as Doug turned down yet another good looking chick that came his way. What the hell is up with that? He kept his eyes focus on his brother. This was the third time he saw someone come up to Doug and yet turned them down. He know this because he had been watching him the whole time. He notice how his brother didn't even paid them no attention. What the hell is wrong with him? It was obvious that the women's want him.
Without thinking, Pacey lifted his head from on top of Joey's, as he said, "I think my brother is gay."
Opening her eyes as she lifted her head, she looked at Pacey with wide eyes. Okay, that just came out of nowhere. "What?!" she said.
"I know I sound crazy but I really do think that Doug is gay," he said as he looked back over at Doug.
Following his line of sight, Joey saw Doug standing by a group of women who seem to be interested in him. She couldn't blame them. He is quite good looking. Just like Pacey, she thought. Wait, what? Where the hell did that come from? Yeah, Pacey's not bad to look at but let's be real here. She can't stand him! She never thought of Pacey in that way before so why start now?
"Really, Pacey," she said as she looked at him. "Why would you think that?"
"Because look at him! He's not paying any of those girls attention!" he said not believing what is being displayed in front of him.
Joey shook her head as she looked at Pacey. What is wrong with these guys in her life? First Dawson claims that his mom might be having an affair and now Pacey accuse his brother of being gay!
After a moment, Joey found her voice, "You know what I think? I think you're just trying to find something to distract you from what you're feeling."
Pacey just looked at her. Oh no. Does she knows?
"What?" he asked shakily.
"You're hurt that Jen is with Dawson right now so you're trying to find something to distract you from that pain," she said.
Oh. "Joey. Stop talking," he said relieved that she hadn't figured him out.
"But -"
"Bup, bup, bup, bup, bup. Just stop talking," he said as he put his finger to her lip.
Rolling her eyes up at him, Joey conceded.
Smiling to himself as he took a brief moment to enjoy the feel of her lips on his finger, Pacey remove his finger from her lip slowly. "Good," he said as he walked them back over to their seat.
As soon as they sat down, Joey went on to say, "I'm just saying that maybe you shouldn't assume things that aren't really there."
Sighing, Pacey looked over at her. This girl don't know what she's doing to me. God, she drives him crazy sometimes! He don't know rather to grab her face and kiss her senseless or yell at her. At this moment the state he is in, would love to do both.
Noticing the look he is giving her, Joey was starting to get a little uncomfortable. "What?" she asked breathless.
Staring, Pacey said, "Nothing. It's just that you drive me crazy sometimes," he said huskily.
Without thinking clearly as her mind seem to be a bit hazy, Joey said, "Oh really? Like you don't get under my skin?" Her eyes widen after she said that.
Grinning widely, Pacey looked at Joey deeply in her eyes. Her breathing stopped with the look he was currently giving her. The noise and the people that surround them seem to be fading away as they kept their eyes on each other. Time seem to stood still as Pacey inch closer towards Joey. Watching him drawing closer to her, Joey's eyes seem to widen even more if that was possible. Her heart was beating a mile a minute as she anticipate what will happen next. The change of atmosphere between them had grew intense, and to her surprise she didn't want it to stop. Whatever is happening between them at the moment, she likes it. Something deep inside her is excited. The anticipation is waning as she drew closer to him. Their lips were mere inches apart as they could feel each other breaths. Joey couldn't take it any more as she gave out a little moan.
Hearing that sweet sound come from her mouth, Pacey groan inwardly as he whispered out her name. "Joey," he said huskily.
Still in a daze, Joey softly said, "Yeah."
Looking at her as he smiled, he was about to say something when Mr. Leery showed up and interrupt their moment.
"Pacey, Joey, have you guys seen my wife," he asked not realizing what he had just walked in on.
As soon as they heard his voice, they both sprung back quickly away from each other with guilty looks on their faces.
Still trying to process what all just happened, Joey stood quickly from her spot next to Pacey as she faced Mr. Leery whom seen to be more concern about his wife than what was being displayed in front of him.
Relief washed over her as she realize that he didn't suspect a thing. The last thing she want is for Mr. Leery to get the wrong idea. Whatever happened just now between her and Pacey was just out of the spur of the moment. It meant nothing. She was feeling vulnerable and so was he. That's all it was.
Pacey stood up a moment later as he collect his bearings. He cleared his throat before he started to speak. "Sorry, Mr. Leery, we haven't seen her. I thought she was with you?" he asked as he stole a quick glance over at Joey.
Mitch shook his head as he sighed. "She was but then we split up. She was suppose to meet back with me half an hour ago," he said.
Not wanting to stay here any longer, Joey wanted to go home. She had a lot to think about and she certainly can't think clearly when she's around him. "Um, Mr. Leery, I was just about to head on home so if I happen to run into her - I'll let her know that you are looking for her."
Wait what! She's leaving? No! They need to talk about this. Pacey turned quickly to Joey as he looked at her. She's avoiding his gaze.
"Thank you, Joey. And if you do please tell her I'm waiting for her over here at the dance area," Mitch said.
Joey nodded her head as she turn quickly trying to leave but Pacey grab a hold of her before she could go. Looking at his hand held tightly to her arm, Joey looked up at him with wide eyes. Oh no. Please don't. Not here. Not now.
As if he was reading her mind, Pacey let go of her arm as he smirked at her reassuringly. "Sorry," he said softly.
"What's up?" she asked.
"You leaving?"
Nodding her head slowly, Joey said, "Yeah. It's getting late and Bessie probably needs me."
Understanding, Pacey knew that she isn't ready to talk about what just happened between them. Willing to let this go for now, he nodded his head as a gesture telling her it's okay to go.
Giving him a thankful look, Joey turned back around quickly as she rushed out.
Pacey stood there as he watch her retreating form, unaware that Mitch have been watching them the whole time.
What just happened, Joey thought as she continue to walk out of the festival. Did she and Pacey almost kissed? No! That's insane! They can't stand each other! She never thought about Pacey in that way. She was just hurt that Dawson is with Jen. That's it was. She was hurt and Pacey just happened to be there. It won't happen again. It could never happen again. What almost happen tonight was a mistake. A mistake that would never be repeated. She felt sick. She felt like she had betrayed Dawson. Fighting the tears that was threatening to fall from her eyes, Joey quickly wiped her face.
How did everything get so screwed up?
Just then she heard a noise coming from her left. It was too dark to see but she could hear voices. Noticing that she's the only one out there since the festival is a little ways further back, Joey was starting to panic. Not knowing what to do because she isn't in her right state of mind at the moment, Joey stood frozen at her spot as she continue to look over where the voices are coming from.
Squinting her eyes so she could see more clearly, Joey walk a little further up as she started to recognize a familiar voice.
As soon as she draw a little closer, she was careful not to get noticed. Looking on she was shocked at what she saw. This could not be happening, she mussed as she continue looking at what is being displayed in front of her. Shaking her head she couldn't believe her eyes. What the hell is going on here?
There stood in front of her is Gail and what looked like her co-anchor Bob - kissing.
An: Well, there you have it folks. I hope this chapter was well worth the wait.
