Episode 8: Boyfriend
"I can't believe our Freshman class is planning a trip to Paris. How awesome is that?" Dawson said as he offered a plate of pizza to Joey.
"Thanks," Joey said as she took the plate and bite into her pizza. "I know. I can't wait. I've always wanted to go to Paris. So this could be my chance to go. I just hope that our class will raise enough money so we could go on this trip."
Dawson nodded his head as he agreed with her. So far things have been going great between them. He had missed the times they had spent together. But he has no one to blame but himself. He was pretty mean to her when he found out that she knew about his mom's deception but didn't say anything about it. The day after the hurricane, he did go over to her house to apologize to her about his behavior and lucky for him - she did forgave him. But he still kept his distance from her. He figured that he needed to give her some time and space. He never thought in a million years that she would turn to Pacey.
Now is his time to rectify that.
Lately, Joey has been spending some time at his house. They have gotten back to their ritual of movie night in his bedroom every Friday night. Like tonight, he had ordered pizza as they watched one of his favorite old classic films called: The Last Time I Saw Paris, with Liz Taylor and Van Johnson. Watching this movie has also sparked up the conversation about their class field trip. Which he really do hope that their class will raise enough money for this trip. He knew how much Joey always wanted to go to Paris and he too would love to go on this trip with her. Paris is known to be the most romantic place in the world and he would rather spend his time there with the woman he loves.
Dawson looked over at Joey with a thoughtful smile on his face. She took a glimpse at him and noticed he was staring.
"What?" She asked. "What's that smile for?"
Dawson put his pizza down on his plate and scooch closer towards her. Joey's eyes grew wide as she watched Dawson move close to her. For a brief moment, she thought that he was going to kiss her.
He didn't.
Surprisingly, he paused as he continued to smile at her.
"What?" She couldn't help to ask again.
"I'm just so happy that you are here," he started. "I've missed you, Jo."
Joey smirked as she rolled her eyes good-naturedly.
"Well, I was never gone, Dawson," she said playfully.
He smirked as he brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I know," he whispered.
Joey's brow creased as she looked at him. He had been acting very strange lately and she wanted to get to the bottom of it.
"What's with you, Dawson? You've been acting strange. Is everything okay?"
Dawson chuckled as he put his hand down in it's rightful place. "What? I can't be nice to a friend who I haven't seen in a while?"
"It's not that you can't be nice. It's just that ... I don't know," she was lost of words.
"Relax, Jo, I'm just appreciating a good friend. After the break-up that Jen and I had ... it's just nice to have a good friend around, that's all," he said.
Joey nodded her head with understanding but she still felt a bit uncomfortable. If it wasn't for her feelings for Pacey, she would have jumped in any chance to win Dawson's heart right about now. But now it was too late. She's in love with Pacey. And it's Pacey that she wants to be with. She had thought it was Dawson that she wanted. But it was just the idea of being with someone like him. Dawson is a good friend and he always will be. But to think of him as a soulmate ... it's not possible. There is no connection between them. Not in the way she has with Pacey. With Pacey there is a connection that is so strong that it is very scary. She realizes that he has the power to either make or break her. He has the power to either make her very happy or make her angry as hell at him.
No matter what happens, it always revert back to Pacey.
They could be mad as hell with each other or say or do things that could hurt one another, and STILL she will always have Pacey in her heart. That's how she knows that Pacey is the love of her life. He is her soulmate. She realizes that now. She also realizes that she made a mistake to think that Dawson was the one. When in truth, she only appreciates his kindness. He was only being a good friend when he was there for her when her mother died. That's all it was. She had believed it was something more than that but all it really was just her being thankful.
Pacey, on the other hand, he challenges her. He makes her feel good or do things she never thought was possible. That night when he stayed with her during the hurricane had her thinking. He brought up something that made her stop to think. He discovered the picture she had of him in her room. At the time she never thought much about it when his mother gave her that picture, but when she took it, it finally left her wondering why did she put it in a frame and set it on her bedside table? She could have easily threw it away or use it as a dart board like Pacey said. But no. She didn't do that. When she first saw that picture, she really did like it. She liked it so much that it was the first thing she sees every morning she wake up. She never stopped to think that she didn't have any pictures of Dawson hanging around in her room.
Just a picture of Pacey. Her Pacey.
And to think there is a reason why Mrs. Witter gave her that picture. She must have known all along that Joey had hidden feelings for her son. But she was stupid to realize it sooner.
Now she knew.
"Joey! Earth to, Joey! Are you there?" Dawson broke her out of her thoughts.
"Hmm ..." she snapped out of her thoughts of Pacey.
"Where were you just now?" Dawson asked.
"I'm sorry, Dawson, I should get going. I just remembered I had promised Bessie that I would look after Alexzander for her tonight," she rushed as she put on her shoes.
"It's okay. We can finish watching the movie some other time," he said feeling a bit disappointed.
"Thanks, Dawson," she said as she climb out the window.
Dawson sat back in his bed as he continued to stare at the window she just climb out of.
oOo
Joey couldn't wait to get home as she thought to give Pacey a call. It's been a while since she saw him last and she wondered what he has been up to. It's funny, she never thought that she would miss him as much as she does now.
She noticed the change of mood that she has had. She have been smiling a lot lately. So much so, that even her sister Bessie noticed that she even has a glow within her. Joey didn't say much when her sister questioned her about her seeing anybody. She just laugh it off and tell Bessie that she's hallucinating.
She can't help that every time she sees, thinks or is around Pacey - she gets butterflies in her stomach. It sucks because all she feels like is being a girly girl. And Joey Potter is never the one to be a girly girl. But she can't help it when it comes to Pacey. Love could make a person do silly things - her mother once told her. She is starting to see that it's the truth. Never in her life has she thought that she would fall in love with Pacey Witter. She would have laughed in someone's face if they had told her that. Little did she realize how much he has changed her.
And she has no regrets what-so-ever about it.
As soon as she reached her house, Joey noticed a familiar vehicle parked in the drive. Excitement ran through her as she rushed in the house. Once she burst into the house, she was quickly greeted with the two most important people in her life.
"Nana! Grandpa!" She said happily as she rushed into their arms.
Sail by Awolnation was playing in the background as Pacey was bench pressing at the local gym he had joined a month ago. He loved going to the gym. It helps him work out some stress he's been having lately. His father is the main reason why he started to join the gym. He wanted to work out his frustrations that his father had put on him. This is where he goes to escape and relieve stress. The gym happens to be the holy grail for him as he continues to lift the weights. He is starting to build muscles and developing a six pack abs. He loves the new look that he is building for himself. It feels good being at the gym doing something that make him feel whole. He could be in control and just be lost in himself. Not having to worry about what is going on in the outside world. This is where he goes to think and keep himself in shape. It is also very helpful since he wants to look good for a certain someone.
Putting the weights back in their place on the bars overhead, Pacey sat up as he was covered in glistening sweat. He picked up his water bottle from the floor next to him as he twist the cap open and took a huge gulp of water. He loved the feel of the cool water run down his very dry throat after a hard day of working out. He than reached over to grab his towel and hung it over his neck. He dabbed some of his sweat off his forehead.
Looking around, he noticed some of the women there looking at him smiling and whispering to each other about him. He smiled back at them and gave a little nod their way. That action had caused them to smile and giggle even more. Seeing them react that way made him feel pretty damn good about himself. He have to admit, some of the women here are pretty attractive looking but none of them can hold a candle to his Joey.
Getting up from his spot on the bench, Pacey heads to the men's locker room. He grabs his duffle bag out from his locker and starts to get ready to hit the shower.
After freshly cleaning and changing, Pacey headed out of the gym and was surprised to run into his brother Doug. The good mood he was once feeling had now vanished as he knew the reason why Doug had showed up.
"Whatever it is, Dougal, tell him that I'm busy," Pacey rushed as he walked passed Doug, trying to escape as fast as he could.
"He's wondering where you've run off to, Pace. He wants you home," Doug said as he caught up with Pacey.
Pacey stopped as he turned to look at his brother. "Come on, Doug. You know I need a break from all this craziness. At least you can do is grant me this huge favor by letting me go. Act like you haven't seen me."
"And where, prey tell, are you gonna be all day?" Doug asked.
"That's for me to know. The less you know, the better," Pacey hollered back as he continued to walk away.
oOo
Bessie was busy in the kitchen helping her Nan making dinner. Madison, their grandmother, was teaching her how to make her famous chicken and dumplings. She let Bessie in on their family secret ingredient. They made their own dough by scratch as Madison showed Bessie how to do it right.
Bodie walked into the kitchen holding Alexzander; happy to see that he was finally free from kitchen duties as the ladies worked on dinner. He noticed they were making chicken and dumplings, making the entire kitchen smelling good.
"Sorry to interrupt but, Bess, where do you keep Alex's formula? He seems to be a bit fussy and couldn't wait to have his own dinner," Bodie said.
Bessie smiled as she walked over to one of the cabinets to get the formula. She handed it over to Bodie as he proceed to make the formula for little Alex.
Madison looked over at Bodie and Alex as she smiled warmly at father and son. Just by looking at them she could already tell that Bodie is a proud father. She is so happy that her granddaughter has found such a great man. She had met Bodie a few times in the past and every time she met him, he has never disappointed her. She has to admit Bessie has done good for herself. Now her main focus is on her other grandchild. She wondered if Joey has someone in her life. If she does, she hopes it is a nice young man that she approve of.
Joey was in the living room with her grandfather Richard as they watched The Walking Dead marathon. They were both into the show that they both jumped when someone knocked on the door. Shooting up from her spot on the sofa, Joey excused herself as she walked to the door. On her way she wondered who it could be on the other side. Opening the door, she was surprised to see Pacey at her doorstep. Excitement rushed through her as she took the time to give him a once over. For some reason, Pacey looks extremely sexy today. He always looks good, don't get her wrong, but today there is something about him that makes her want to jump his bones. He is wearing a white muscle shirt with a matching black sweat suit. He has the sweat jacket open to reveal his well toned body through his muscle shirt. Just by looking at him she could tell that he must have just came from the gym.
Joey couldn't hide the little smirk that sneak on her mouth as she pictured Pacey at the gym working out. Pacey noticed the smirk which caused him to smirk, as well. He knew he looks good which is the whole reason why he showed up unannounced. He wanted to surprise her. He also wanted to show her how he could be the better man than Dawson could ever be.
They stood at the door for a good minute staring at each other before her grandfather broke the mood by calling out to her.
"Joey, who's at the door, sweetie?" Richard was a little concerned since his granddaughter took a while to get back.
"Who is that?" Pacey asked as he looked pass Joey over her shoulder to see who it was. The voice sound unfamiliar to him.
Joey moved aside as she allowed Pacey in. "It's my friend, Pacey," she answered her grandfather as she introduced them both as soon as she and Pacey walked into the living room.
Richard looked pleased as he saw the young man standing before him. Just by one look, he could already tell how much this young man loves his granddaughter. He smiled with his approval as he realized just how much Pacey reminded him of himself when he was his age.
Richard stood up as he shook Pacey's hand and offered him to sit on the sofa.
Joey was a bit nervous at first. She wasn't sure if her grandfather would take a liking to Pacey but to her surprise they had gotten along really well. They talked about sports and the types of food they like. They realized that they had a lot in common, which was a huge shock on her part. Even her Nana found Pacey to be quite entertaining. She smiled to herself as she watches Pacey win over her grandparents.
Pacey, on the other hand, was getting along just fine with Joey's grandparents. So much so that he even wished that they were his grandparents. He learned that they were Joey and Bessie's mother's parents. They come every few years to visit with their grandchildren. Which is saying a lot compared to his grandparents. They wouldn't even come to visit during the holidays. His father's parents are very strict, just like his old man. On his mother side, it's just his grandmother. He never got to know his grandfather. He died when his mother was only eight. He only hears nothing but great stories about his grandfather.
Even though he had only just met Joey's grandparents, he really enjoys spending time with them. He loves making them laugh since they seem to get his jokes. He never seemed so at ease before in his life. It's like he could just be himself when he is around them. Spending time with them made him feel like he is part of the family. A family he always wanted.
Everyone was gathered around in the living room listening to Pacey's fascinating story. They were all into the story when Bessie had announced that dinner is ready.
"Pacey, would you like to stay for dinner?" Madison asked as she winked over at her granddaughter.
Meanwhile, Joey looked at her Nana wondering why she gave her a wink. She only asked him to stay for dinner, it's not like she asked him to stay the night.
Pacey couldn't hide his excitement. "Uh, yeah! Sure! I'd love too," he could smell the amazing aroma of chicken and dumplings coming from the kitchen.
Everyone had gather around in the dining room as Bessie finished setting up the plates. Bessie was just about to place a plate for Pacey next to Joey when someone had rang the door bell. Wondering who it could be, she excuse herself as she walked to the door. When she opened the door she saw that it is Doug.
"Hi, Doug. You came just in time. We were about to have dinner. You're more than welcome to join us," Bessie said as she held the door wide open for him to come inside.
"Oh, no thanks, Bess. I was just looking for Pacey. Is he here?" He asked praying to God that his little brother was here.
"Pacey? Yes, he's here. Are you sure you don't want to stay? My grandparents came to visit and they've invited Pacey for dinner," she tried to change his mind.
Before Doug could respond, Pacey walked up not so happy to see his brother standing there.
"Doug, what are you doing here? Did dad send you?"
"I'm sorry, Pace. Dad is not very happy with you right now," Doug was feeling a bit uncomfortable discussing personal family business in front of other people.
On cue, Joey had walked in with apparent puzzlement written all over her face when she saw Doug at the door.
"What's going on? Is everything okay?" She asked feeling a surge of disappointment at the sight of Doug being there. She knew it could only mean one thing - Mr. Witter.
"Looks like I won't be staying for dinner," Pacey said regretfully. He than turn to Bessie, "Sorry."
"It's okay. Maybe next time," Bessie waved off.
Pacey took one look at Joey before he follow his brother out the door. Bessie watched as Joey kept looking at the door with clear disappointment. She smiled to herself as she realized just how much her sister really likes Pacey. She pulled Joey along as they made it back to the dining room where everyone was waiting.
"Where's Pacey?" Madison asked as she look around for him.
"He had to go home, Nan," Bessie said.
"Oh what a shame. I really enjoyed his company."
Joey smiled when she heard her Nana said that. She is glad to know that her grandparents both like Pacey just as much as she does. She never thought that Pacey would hold a special place in her heart. As much as she couldn't stand him - he somehow managed to ease his way into her heart.
Bessie noticed the far away look in her little sister eyes. She know that Joey must be thinking about Pacey. Joey can't fool her. She knows very well that Joey has fallen hard for Pacey. She just wishes that Joey would open up and admit her true feelings.
"It's okay, Nan, I'm sure Pacey will be back again before you guys leave. Maybe next time he will stay for dinner," Bessie winked at her grandmother.
"That would be nice. Don't you think so, Rich?" She turned to her husband.
"Yes, Maddie, it would be nice," Richard agreed with his wife.
Both Joey and Bodie looked at Bessie and the grandparents as if they were up to something. Joey looked at Bodie as he shrugged his shoulders indicating that he was at a loss, as well.
"So, Joey, tell me. Is Pacey your boyfriend?" Madison asked her granddaughter.
Surprised by that question, Joey choked on her drink as she looked at her Nana with wide eyes. Whatever gave her that idea?
"Uh, actually -"
"Yes he is!" Bessie rushed in stopping her sister from denying it.
Both Joey and Bodie looked at Bessie as if she was out of her mind. Why would Bessie say that? She couldn't believe that her sister would lie like that to their grandmother. What was she thinking? Joey bucked her eyes out at Bessie as Bessie did the same back at Joey.
"Oh marvelous! I was hoping that he is your boyfriend. He is such a nice young man. I am so glad that both my beautiful granddaughters have someone special in their lives. Don't you, Rich?" Madison turn to her husband again.
"Yes, Maddie," Richard said once again agreeing with his wife.
Everyone continue on with their dinner and talked about what events they would do while their grandparents were staying in town. When they were finished with their meal, Joey couldn't wait to get Bessie alone. She volunteered to help Bessie clean the kitchen while everyone else settled in the living room.
"I can't believe you told Nana that Pacey is my boyfriend! Bess, what were you thinking!" Joey said in disbelief.
"I was thinking that Nan really wanted to hear that Pacey is your boyfriend," Bessie said as if it was no big of a deal.
"But Pacey is not my boyfriend," Joey pointed out the obvious.
"Yes, but he could be," Bessie said.
Joey looked at her sister as if she have lost her head.
"What do you mean he could be?"
"Think about it, Jo. Have Pacey be your fake boyfriend," Bessie said with a sparkle in her eye.
"What!? Bess, are you nuts?"
"Only for a week while Nan and Grand are in town," Bessie went on.
Joey shook her head at the thought of her crazy big sister. "This is insane, Bess! What makes you think that Pacey will agree to this?"
"Well, for starters, I see the way he looks at you," Bessie said as she saw the look Joey was giving her - doubt. "Oh come on, Jo! It's obvious that Pacey have feelings for you."
Joey snickered at her sister's words. "Oh please! Pacey doesn't like me. He just likes to annoy me."
"Uh, flirtation 1-0-1, Jo. I mean that's what a guy does when he's into a women," Bessie said as she walk up to her sister. "Trust me. I know what I am talking about. I'm sure Pacey will be thrilled to be your boyfriend for a week," she said as she left the kitchen to leave Joey with her thoughts.
"How is everything going over there?" Pacey was on the phone with Dawson. It has been a while since the two of them have their bro moment.
"Not well. My parents are still at it and it's driving me crazy. My father has been coming home at late hours and my mom would be in the guest room crying every night," Dawson said as he paces back and forth in his bedroom.
"Well, I would rather deal with your problems than dealing with my daddy issues," Pacey laid back on his bed exhausted just thinking about his father.
"Why, what's going on?" Dawson asked concern.
"You know the usual. My old man comes home drunk and is always on my case. My mom doesn't say anything and just lets him control me. Don't get me started with Doug. I'm really pissed at him right now," Pacey said as he rubs his brow. He really needs a break. Between his father and brother, they both are really starting to get on his damn nerves.
"Sorry to hear that, Pace."
"Yeah, well enough of my problems. I can handle it. You, on the other hand, is who I am concern about. Don't let your parents problems get to you, Dawson. You know I'm here for you, man. Besides, don't worry about your father. He's just hurt right now. I'm sure things will get better," Pacey reassure him.
"I sure hope so," Dawson said as he sighed.
But things didn't get any better. In fact, it had gotten worse. Dawson had never thought that his father could be so cruel. He gets that his father is mad and hurt from what his mother did, but that doesn't mean he has to act the way he does. His father has gone way too far and he is starting to get tired of seeing his dad treating his mother the way he does.
A couple of days ago, his father came home one night with the stench of another women's cheap perfume. His mother confronted him about it and his father ignored her and kept on walking telling her it's none of her business. Than the next day, Dawson was just about to go to the store for his mom when someone had knocked on their door. He went to answer it and couldn't believe what he saw. It was a young lady who looks to be in her mid-twenties. She was dressed in a very tight short skimpy dress. He recognizes the same cheap perfume smell that his father had reeked of the night before. Looking at the women he could already tell that he doesn't like her. She was giving him a fake smile as she flips her hair back from her shoulder.
"Excuse me, is your father home?" She said as she looks around his house with disgust.
Dawson didn't like her attitude. The way she presents herself and even got the nerve to show up at their house unannounced like that. It was too much! Both his father and this whore of a woman should be ashamed of themselves. They were being disrespectful not only towards his mother but towards him. He never thought that he would hate his father as much as he does now. Whatever respect that he has for him is now gone.
Mitch had come up from behind Dawson and was happy to see Gloria at the door. He had run into her a few days back and they both hit it off. He talked to her about his problems and she had listened to him. She was there for him and he needed her. He liked talking to her and he found himself starting to get attached to her. They would talk for long hours - day and night. She would listen and comfort him without any complaint. Their relationship was growing more and more. Mitch was starting to find himself being happy again. Happy to find someone who understands him. Who appreciates all that he could offer. Spending time with her has been the happiest he has ever felt. But when their time ended and reality kicks in, it is time for him to get back to his miserable life. Back to his broken home where it once used to be a joyous loving home. But now times have changed and it's now time for him to move on.
"Gloria! What a pleasant surprise! Come on in," Mitch said as he moves Dawson aside so that she could come in.
Dawson shot his father a dirty look as he couldn't believe what his father had just done. His heart was breaking into a million pieces as he watches his father looking lovingly at that other women. He couldn't believe this! There is no way that this could be his life right now. His father has changed and he does not like the man that he is looking at right now. He watched the two of them with disgust as tears cloud his line of vision.
How could his father be so heartless and do this to them?
He doesn't even know who his father is anymore. The man he is looking at right not is not his father. He doesn't know who this stranger is but he is definitely not the same man who had raised him for fifteen years. That man is long gone. He is now looking at a man who doesn't deserve a family. To him - he don't have a father. As far as he knows, that man is dead to him.
"Dawson? Who's at the door, sweetie?" Gail came from the kitchen and stopped in her tracks as soon as she saw her husband in the arms of another woman.
The bowl of cake batter she was mixing slipped from her hand as it came crashing down making a big splatter of a mess all over the wooden floor and on herself. Her heart skipped a beat as a single tear ran down her cheek. Her hands started shaking as she stood there not knowing what to do. Should she yell? Should she cry? Or should she just ignore what's right in front of her and just clean up the mess she made? Lots of thoughts were running through her mind as she realizes that she had really lost the man that she love.
"Dawson, could you help me clean this up while I talk to your father," Gail said as she finally found her voice.
"Yeah," Dawson said awkwardly as he quickly excuses himself to get the cleaning supply from the kitchen.
Gail shot a glaring eye at Mitch as she shifted her gaze to the young women standing beside him. She knew she did wrong but she had never once flaunted her affair in front of her family the way that he is doing right now. Mitch has gone way too far and she can't believe he would go as far as to bring that woman here at their house.
"What do you think you're doing, Mitch?" Not a minute went by and she already want to tear his head off. How dare he do this to them?
Dawson came back still feeling awkward as he started cleaning up the cake batter on the floor.
Mitch hardens his heart as he looks back at Gail - gloating. He snickered arrogantly as his hand slid down to grab a hold of Gloria's hand. He took a couple of steps towards Gail not caring how much he is hurting her right now. He leans forward as he reaches the side of her ear.
"What does it look like I'm doing? I'm taking my girl out to dinner," he whispered so that she could only hear him.
Dawson couldn't help but to sneak a peek up at his parents as he notice his mother shaking while her hand balled up into a tight fist. At that moment, he knew his father must have said something for her to react like that. He couldn't take it anymore. This has got to stop! Slowly getting up from his spot, Dawson turns a glaring eye towards his father. He had never been so disappointed in his life. As soon as he saw his father give a smug smirk at his mother; Dawson reacts quickly when his father took hold of that women's hand and about to turn and leave. He reached out and grabs a hold of his father's wrist - the same one currently holding Gloria's. He wanted to stop him from all this. He wanted to let his father know how he really feels. He has to protect his mom. He can't just sit back and let his father treat her the way he does.
Mitch was surprised as soon as he notices his son grab a hold of his wrist. He knew he took it way too far but he couldn't help it. All he could think about was revenge. He wanted to hurt Gail so deeply that he didn't intend to get Dawson mixed up in their mess. He could tell that his son was hurt by all this - he knows that. He also knows that his son would do anything to protect his mother. That would even include protecting her from himself. He has to admit, he is proud of his son. He is glad to know that Dawson will be there for his mother. Gail will certainly need her son by her side. Because the way he feels right now ... he can't stop it. Revenge is all he could think about. He knows he is being spiteful and stubborn. What he is doing may even be childish, but he has to seek his plan through. This is the only way to get back at her. He had made a vow that he intends to keep.
Mitch looked up at his son and notices the hatred in his eyes. His heart broke at the sight of him. He knew what he was doing is a huge risk. He was already losing his wife; he knew the risk he was about to take will make him lose his son too.
I'm sorry, Dawson, Mitch thought to himself as he began to harden his heart once again.
Mitch reaches down and grabs a hold of Dawson's wrist. He forcefully took Dawson's hand from his wrist and quickly let go of him as if he had been burned. Mitch than turns to his son as he stood tall like he's all high and mighty as he stare down at his son.
"Is there something you need, Dawson?" His tone was hard and tight.
Hearing the coldness from his voice, Dawson tried his hardest not to show how much that affects him. Instead, he swallows his pride as he looked up at his father and gave him the same smug smirk like he did.
"Who would have thought that you would turn out to be such a coward," Dawson spit out spitefully.
"Dawson?" Gail said as she was shocked to hear those words come out of her son's mouth.
Dawson held his mother back as he walked up closer to his father. He is not going to back down now. His father wants to play that game than fine - he will take it all the way to the end.
"What right do you have to treat my mom the way you do? Huh? And you call yourself a husband and a father," Dawson scoffed.
Mitch was impressed. Dawson sure is his father's son. He has to give it to him - being brave to talk back to him like that.
"This doesn't concern you, son. So why don't you stay out of grown folks business and do what your mother told you to do," Mitch barked back.
"My mother is my business!" Dawson shouted back. There is no way in hell he is going to let Mitch take control of their lives.
Gail couldn't help the sob that escapes her voice. This shouldn't be happening. Father and son shouldn't be at each other's throats like that. Mitch is right. This is between them. She doesn't want her son to have any part of this.
"Your father is right, Dawson. Just finish cleaning up that mess. I will be fine," Gail says to her son.
"But, ma -" Dawson start to protest.
"Dammit, Dawson, just do what I say!" Gail yelled. She didn't mean to yell at him like that. She just wanted all this to end.
His heart broke once again as his mother yelled at him. All he was trying to do was to stick up for her. He was trying to protect her from Mitch. He knows his mother did wrong but that does not mean that Mitch had the right to treat her that way. He is upset too but you don't see him going around being spiteful back at his mother. He remembers the time when his parents used to be all over each other. Where did it all go wrong? Why did she have an affair? How can a person change so much? All of this would have never had happened if his mother would have stayed faithful.
He knows she is sorry. He knows she is hurting. That is punishment enough for him. All he could do now is just be there for her. To support her when she need him. That's all he can do for her right now.
Dawson hung his head down low as he slowly turns back around and continues to wipe up the mess. This is all that he could do for her right now. He will try his best to stay out of it. But he knows it's not going to be easy.
Mitch smirked as he looked at his wife. "Finally. Something we both agree on," he said as he continues to take his leave with Gloria on tow.
Staring at the front door of the house she has used over the years has never changed. It's the same white door that stood tall - never knowing what to expect on the other side. This house has always been unpredictable. It's always been a mystery. You never know what will happen as soon as you enter through that door. There have been a lot of ups and downs when entering this house. She has to admit, she has always been intimidated by the owner of this house. Truth be told, she did always have a little soft spot for their son even when she couldn't stand him at the time.
But now things have changed. She's grown up now and her feelings for their son have also grown. Just like entering this house, she never predicted that she would come to fall in love with the intimidating owner's son.
Over the years, Joey has seen how John Witter treats his son. She never agrees with the way he raise his son, but she wouldn't dare talk back to him no matter how much she wanted too. Mr. Witter could be scary sometimes, especially when he's drinking. Poor Pacey always has to pick up the slack his father demands him to do and always gets verbally abused by him. She doesn't know how Pacey does it. She gives him credit for doing the best that he can. She knows that Pacey always tries to prove himself. Either from his friends or his father. Growing up, it had always been a competition between Pacey and Dawson. They would always compete about something or other. It could be big or small. No matter what it is - one or the other had to be the best. It was always like that with them. She could never understand boys and she will never understand them.
Till this day, it is still like that. One thing is for sure, they have never competed over a girl. Her guess is that they had made a pack that they will never let any girl get in between their friendship. She had remembered once Dawson had mentioned if Pacey had found himself a girlfriend, he will never get in between them. But what if it was her? What if she were to be Pacey's girlfriend? Will Dawson accept them? Will he be okay if his two best friends were dating each other? She doesn't want to be the one to break up a friendship that they all share. It wouldn't be right to either of them. Not because of her love for Pacey. She couldn't do it. But it hurts to think that she couldn't be with the one she loves all because of the pack they made.
One thing for sure is, when Pacey makes a commitment he would stick to it. That's how she knows that there is no way that Pacey would ever let himself gets involved with her. When she found out that he knew that she had feelings for Dawson, he didn't tease her about it. In fact, he kept her secret and insisted in helping her out. He is there for her when she needs him. That's how her feelings for Pacey started to grow. By him being by her side made her see a different side of him. A side she grew fond of. It happened unexpectedly. She can't help the growing attraction that she has of him. Knowing that it could never be; she still hopes that he would at least have a little bit of feelings for her. She knows he cares about her. That one is for sure. She sees it every time she is with him. But does he like her the way she likes him?
That is a mystery within itself. This is why she is a nervous wreck right now. Here she is standing outside in front of his house. The house she was timid to walk into over the years growing up. All because she was intimidated by Mr. Witter, now she is intimidated by his youngest son. She could kill Bessie for this. This was all Bessie's fault. If Bessie hadn't lied to their Nana, she wouldn't be here right now, having to drop a bomb on Pacey. She is afraid of how he is going to react. Will he do it? Will he agree to be her fake boyfriend for a week? Deep down inside, she really hopes so. It would be nice to have him as a boyfriend for a week. Even if it is all just to pretend. The sad thing is, if he does agree she knows for a fact that it wouldn't be pretend for her. But for him - it would all just be an act. Can she accept that? Could she go along with it knowing that it's not real? She has to find out. She has to take a chance or she will never know. Sure in the end she will be left hurt but it's the price that she is willing to take. Being Pacey's fake girlfriend for a week will be worth it. She knew it, and there is no backing down now.
Taking a deep breath, Joey prompts herself forward telling herself she can do it. Just when she was about ready to knock on the door - it flew open and there stood the man of her dreams; Pacey Witter.
As soon as he saw her standing there he couldn't help the smile that forms on his face. At that moment, his day had brightened up. He was in a bad mood all day until he saw this beautiful face in front of him. Seeing her always makes him feel better. No matter how crappy his life is - Joey is always the one who could comfort him. Even now when she looks like a deer that's caught in the headlights. He wonders what is up with her. She seems nervous. Usually when she's nervous, it means that she wants to ask a huge favor. All his life that he's known her, Joey always gets nervous when she thinks that the other person will not agree to her favor.
Pacey smiled warmly as he steps fully outside and closes the door behind him. He took in the nice fresh night air as he looked up at the stars. Tonight, Capeside had a lot of stars out which were shining very brightly. It turns out to be a beautiful night as he shifted his gaze over to his own very special beautiful star - Joey Potter.
He notices her looking up at the stars, as well, as they both took a seat on his front steps. He loves this. He loves being with her like this. Just the two of them, enjoying each other's company, not having to say anything. Just star gazing as they relax and forget about any problems they may have.
"It's really beautiful tonight, isn't it?" Joey said as she focuses on the night star.
Pacey shifted his gaze back at her as he continues to stare at her. "It sure is," he whispered not moving his gaze from her beautiful face.
Joey smiled as she continues to look up at the stars, not realizing that Pacey is no longer looking at the stars, but at her. Little did she know the real meaning behind Pacey's words. She wondered how many stars are out tonight. How many people in the world are looking up at the same bright stars? Looking over at Pacey, she notices that he was staring at her. Seeing the way he was looking at her was starting to make her blush. She tries to hide her face so that he wouldn't see how much his looks affect her. Her heart started racing as she couldn't get that image of the way he was looking at her out of her head.
She knows she shouldn't read too much of it. She knows that it meant nothing. He had made it perfectly clear that he does not have feelings for her. So that look just now meant nothing. But she couldn't help the way he made her feel with just that look alone. It looked as if he wanted her, like she was the most beautiful thing in the world. How could she not have feelings for someone who looks at her the way he does? It's not fair. It's not fair that he can look at her like that and not feel anything. What is she supposed to do? How should she act around him? It is already hard as is to be around him right now. This is how much she loves him. She knows that now. She never loved anyone as much as she loves Pacey. No matter how hard it is, she could never stay away from him. She couldn't even if she tried. The thought of him being far away from her could kill her. It's that dangerous type of love, the one where she can always depend on him and him alone, no one else matters but him.
"What's on your mind, Jo?" She heard him say as she was snapped out of her thoughts.
That's one thing about Pacey. He knows her - inside and out. She believe that he even knows her better than herself. Whenever there is something wrong with her, he picks up on it. He is her yin to her yang. Opposites really do attract. In this case, at least it does for Joey.
Joey sighed as she forces herself to look back at him. "I was just thinking about how much we have changed over the years," she smiled.
Pacey smiles as he looked at her. He has to agree, they did change - a lot. Joey doesn't seem uptight and stuck-up as she once was. He couldn't help the chuckle that escapes him as he thought back on how Joey was in the past. The girl use to give him such a hard time. But still he couldn't help how he feels about her.
"What?" Joey asked as she was curious to what he was laughing about.
"Nothing, I was just thinking how bossy, stuck-up, and rude you used to be in the past. I couldn't stand you," he said as he laughed.
It hurt. She was not going to lie. What he had just said did hurt her. But what hurts more is the fact that he was telling the truth. She was that way towards him. If she had known, she wouldn't have treated him the way she did in the past. Then none of this would have happened. She wouldn't be questioning his feelings toward her. If she had treated him better, than they could have probably been together right now. She wouldn't be here today, worrying about asking him to be her pretend boyfriend.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
Pacey stopped laughing as he heard the tone of her voice. He then looked at her and his heart broke.
"For what?" He asked, he couldn't stand the fact that he had caused this. He wasn't trying to hurt her feelings.
"For the way I've treated you," she said not looking at him.
Pacey sighed as he looked at her. That wasn't what he meant. He wasn't trying to hurt her feelings. He berated himself for hurting her this way.
"Jo, that's not what I meant. I wasn't trying to seek out an apology. I was just explaining how much you have changed. I wasn't complaining. In fact, I didn't care how you had treated me. I still like you the way you are. To me you will always be Joey. The girl I have grown fond of," he said not taking his eyes off of her.
"Joey, look at me," he said. He couldn't stand it if she wouldn't look at him. He hates it if she was even mad at him from his doing. He is the last person to ever want to hurt her. He couldn't stand it if she never forgives him.
Joey slowly looks back at him, hating the fact that she is showing this side of herself in front of him. She doesn't want him to know how much he affects her. She didn't want him to know how much power he has over her. She didn't want him to know how upset she is with herself for ever treating him the way she did.
His heart stopped as soon as he saw the pain in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Jo. I didn't mean to hurt you," he couldn't help but to apologize to her.
"It's ok. You're right. I was like that. Thinking back made me realize how bossy and uptight I was. But seeing how close we are now ... I'm just ashamed of the way I had treated you," she confess.
"Don't be. I'm not," he said with much sincerity in his eyes.
Joey looked at him confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well, you may not know this, but by you treating me the way you did made me want to be a better man. I guess you can say I needed that push. Besides, it wasn't all bad; I had a little fun messing with you too," he said as he smiled at her.
With that comment made Joey laughed as she was starting to feel better. It turns out; Pacey wasn't upset with her at all. She is glad to know that he didn't mind at all the way she was towards him. It made her decision a whole lot easy. Taking a deep breath, Joey turns to Pacey with a sweet smile plastered on her face.
Seeing the way she was smiling at him made his heart swell with love. He wanted so badly to kiss her and tell her how much he loves her. But he knows better than to do that. It could cost them their friendship. He wouldn't dare take the chance on that. He couldn't lose her.
"Pace?"
"Yeah?" He said, loving the way she calls his name.
"Um, the reason why I stopped by tonight is because I need to ask you a favor," she said looking at him expectantly.
He knew it! He knew the moment she was standing at the door something was up. Whatever it is, he knows that he could never let her down. If only she knew that he would do anything for her. If she told him to rob a bank - he would do it. If she told him to jump off a cliff - he would do it. No matter what the circumstances, he would do it all for her.
"Anything," he said as he anticipated what the favor would be.
"Could you be my pretend boyfriend for a week?" She asked with her eyes closed. There she did it. Now it's just all up to Pacey.
Pacey just stared at her for a moment as he watches her being all cute and nervous. He couldn't help but to let out a chuckle as he reaches out to lift her chin; forcing her to look him in the eye.
He leans in closer not letting go of his hold on her chin, their nose almost touching as he looks her straight in the eyes. "Of course, I'll be your pretend boyfriend," he said - taking her breath away.
Joey's heart skipped a beat as she continues to stare into the eyes of the man she loves. She couldn't believe it. Did he just agree to her request? Bessie was right, he wouldn't mind. Judging by the way he is looking at her, she could tell that he meant every word of it. At that moment, she realizes what a loyal and good friend Pacey is. She knows now that she could definitely count on him. She can go to him for anything. She has always known that, but today definitely proves how much she can count on him.
Pacey couldn't take his eyes off her as he continues to stare deeply. He loves this girl. The fact that she asked him to be her boyfriend made him proud. Granted it was all only for just pretend, but to him it wouldn't be an act. If he's going to do this, he's going to take it all the way. He is going to make sure that he is the best pretend boyfriend she ever had. No matter what reason she has, he didn't care. All that matters is that she thought to go to him for this. It had to count for something. Looking into her eyes, he feels like the luckiest man alive.
Not realizing that he has been staring for a long time, his hand was still on her chin as he was lost in those big beautiful brown eyes of hers. He wouldn't even move an inch away from her. The way he sees it, she has become his. This is his girl. She belongs to nobody but him. And he belongs to no one but her. They are destine to be together. He certainly believes that. Wanting to fill in the little gap between them, Pacey wants nothing more than to kiss her at that moment.
Instead, he leans back and takes his hand from her chin as he grabs a hold of her cheek from the side of her mouth. He then begins to playfully pull at it as he watches how funny it made her look. He couldn't help it. He loves messing with her. He begins to laugh harder when she slapped his hand away.
"Pacey! You jerk! That wasn't funny," she tried not to laugh herself.
"Yes, it was!" He said as he couldn't control his laughter.
His laughter made her laugh as they both started to laugh uncontrollably. This is so like them. They could just be themselves and act silly whenever they want. That's what makes them comfortable around each other. This is what makes them great.
"So? I'm your boyfriend now, huh?" Pacey said, loving the fact that he is able to say that.
"Only my pretend boyfriend," Joey said as she rolls her eyes playfully, bumping his shoulder while doing so.
This has been the happiest day of his life, he has never felt as alive as he does right now. Continuing to play around with each other, Pacey reaches out and starts messing with Joey's hair. It makes a big mess as it left her looking like she had just gotten out of bed after sleeping very roughly.
Joey hit him on the arm as she tries to fix her hair. At the same time, Pacey rubs his arm where she had hit him. It had stung a little but it was worth it. He watched as she continues to straighten out her hair. He couldn't resist any longer, he reaches out and proceeds to help her with her hair.
Joey stops as she looks up at him. He looks so handsome and she loves the feel of his hand running through her hair. She couldn't help but to stare at his perfect face as he seems so focused on fixing her hair.
Yeah, you should be since you're the one who messed it up in the first place, she thought as she bit down on her lower lip.
Pacey stopped in mid stroke as he looked at her. He notices the way she was looking at him and he didn't miss the part when she bit her lip. It was the way she did it that made him hungry for her. The way she is looking at him made him think that she wants him just as much as he wants her. But he couldn't be too sure. Only to play it safe, he slowly lean in as he places a soft kiss on her forehead.
Joey closed her eyes as she felt his soft lips touch her head. It felt amazing but it was her lips that she was hoping that he was aiming for. It didn't matter. He kissed her and that's all she needs.
"Pacey ..." she started but was lost for words.
"Why me?" He asked out of the blue.
"Huh?"
"Why did you choose me to pose as your boyfriend?" He notices the look she gave and quickly corrects himself. "I'm not complaining I just ... wanted to know what made you come to me."
She knew she had to explain herself. Of course he would be curious.
"Bessie told Nana that you are my boyfriend," Joey let out. "She only said it because she knows how much Nana likes you."
Oh, so that's why, he thought. He is happy to know that her Nana likes him enough to wish him to be her granddaughter's boyfriend. He didn't realize what a huge impression he had made. It felt good knowing that he has been approved by the women that he loves grandmother. It meant a lot to know that she has accepted him to be good enough for her granddaughter.
"Are you mad?" Joey asked as she snapped him out of his thoughts.
"No, I'm not mad. Just flattered," he smiled.
She smiled with relief as she looks up at him. "Good," she says as she nods her head.
"Great," he says as he takes a hold of her hand.
"Joey, your boyfriend is here!" Bessie smiled playfully at Pacey as she steps aside to let him in.
Pacey threw a mock grin back at her as he was quickly greeted by Richard. They walked into the living room as Richard offers Pacey something to drink. He accepted the offer as Richard stalked off into the kitchen. As soon as her grandfather was out of sight, Bessie turns to Pacey with a huge grin plastered on her face. She notices that he must be nervous because she sees the way he kept twiddling his thumbs as he sat back on the couch looking around. Bessie took this opportunity to have a little chat with him.
"So, Pacey, how are things going with you and my sister?" Bessie asked as she took a seat next to him.
He felt a little uneasy talking to her about this. It was bad enough that they have to deceive their grandparents about this lie. At first he thought it would be easy, but the more he spends time with them, the more he feels awful about what he is doing. They are nice people who deserve the truth! Not only them but Joey needs to know the truth, as well. It has been killing him that he gets to spend time like this with her, all the while, not letting her know how he really feels. There were times when he came close to confessing his feelings to her. But he knew that it wasn't the right time to do so. He didn't want to ruin what they have going on. Things were looking good for them. It was as if they were almost a real couple. He didn't want to spoil it; even if it meant that he has to continue with this lie. Plus, there were other issues he had to worry about. The fact that Dawson happens to fall for the same girl as him. What made it worse is the fact that she feels the same way towards him. Now he knows that he should back off, but deep down he couldn't. He remembers the pack he made with Dawson years ago. They promised that they would never let any girl get in between them. That was all good with him until the girl happens to be Joey Potter. Now he wishes he had never made that stupid pack with Dawson Leery. Than to make it worse, he had to agree with Joey to not tell Dawson about their plan as a pretend couple for a week. So basically, they are just keeping secrets from each other. And the biggest deceptive award goes to none other than Pacey Witter - himself.
He looked over at Bessie as he notices her waiting for his reply. "Everything is fine. Great actually. I've never seen Joey so dedicated in this whole pretend couple thing."
Bessie smiled as she nodded her agreement. She knew her sister wouldn't pass up a chance to get closer to Pacey. "Yeah, I agree. I've never seen her so happy then I do now."
Pacey smiled to himself as even he has noticed how happy Joey has been. Seeing her happy has made him happy. He is just glad to be a part of that. Ever since her mom died, Joey had built up this wall. She kept her problems to herself and pretended to act tough. He knew how she really felt. Everyone else chose to ignore it - thinking that she was fine but he knew better. He knew that she needed some space and he respected her for that. That is why he had kept his distance. Unlike Dawson who had kept pushing the issue. Dawson doesn't understand Joey the way he does. He knows that Joey needed time to process her mother's death. She's the type of person who likes to deal with her problems on her own. Dawson doesn't see it that way. Sure, she was thankful that he was there but it only made her walls build up more. She had to pretend that Dawson was a huge help. But he knew her - inside and out. He knew that she wasn't really okay. He knew that by Dawson being there had bothered her but she was too ashamed to admit it. He knew her all too well how she was feeling. He also knew that her judgement towards Dawson had been clouded by her feelings for him. That is what makes him feel sick the most. The fact that Dawson can get away with such things.
"To be honest, Bess," Pacey said as he looked at her seriously. "I never thought that things would turn out this way."
Bessie looked at him confused for a moment. "What do you mean?" She asked just as Joey walked out of her bedroom but stopped short when she heard her sister's voice.
"I know that it was you who said that I am Joey's boyfriend but ... I'm surprised she didn't fight you on it," he said unaware that Joey was a few feet behind them.
"Well, she did at first, only because I lied to our Nana," Bessie admitted.
"That's not what I meant," Pacey said as he smirked. "What I meant is ... you would think she would fight hard for you to say that it was Dawson instead of me."
Joey's heart stopped as she heard Pacey say that. Of course, he would think that way. This is all her fault. The fact that she had liked Dawson first was a huge mistake on her part. She thought that Dawson was the one she wanted but now she realizes that the person who she really wants is Pacey. It had always been Pacey. She was just too proud to admit it. But hearing him say that hurt because she is the one who put that thought into his head. If only he knew how she really feel about him.
"Dawson?" Bessie was confused for a moment until she remembered that Joey did have a crush on Dawson. She also remembered that Joey had mentioned something about Pacey knowing about it. "I mean, it is kind of late for her to complain when it was already out there when I told Nan that you were her boyfriend."
True. What Bessie said is right. He knew that. Still, he had hoped she would have said something else. Something like Joey doesn't have feelings for Dawson anymore. There were times he had thought that Joey had moved on. He even thought that she might have started to have feelings for him, but he could be wrong. Sure he knows her like the back of his hand but there are times when that girl is so hard to read. Maybe he was reading too much into it. The thought of her starting to have feelings for him was his own wishful thinking.
Joey studies him as she tries to figure out what he is thinking. From the looks of it he looked a little hurt. Before she has time to think about what's been bothering him - her grandfather came up behind her.
"Oh, Joey, you're out. Good. Come join us," he said as both Bessie and Pacey turn quickly to see them appear into the living room.
Not too far behind came Madison and Bodie carrying drinks and a bowl full of sliced fruits.
"Sorry it took me long. Maddie needed my help in the kitchen," Richard said to Pacey as he handed him his drink.
"Not a problem." Pacey replied as he accepted the drink.
Joey joined Pacey on the couch as she sat next to him. She then picked up a plate from the coffee table and scoops some fruits into the plate and held it up to him - offering him some fruits. Everyone watched with smiles on their faces as Pacey took hold of the plate she handed him. He smiled his thanks as he took a bite of the strawberry. Joey was lost in him for a moment until her Nana brought her back to reality.
"So, Pacey," she started. "Do you bowl? Because we are all going out bowling later tonight and I would love it if you can come join us," Madison said.
Joey looked at Pacey expectantly as she prayed that he would say yes. It would be nice for him to come and hang out with her family. She knows that he would have a good time plus the fact that she would get to spend plenty of time with him.
Pacey smirked as he placed his plate down on the coffee table. "I would love to come. I don't mean to brag but I am known as the best bowler here in Capeside," he gloats.
"We'll see about that," Richard threw back. "Maddie and I are known as the best senior bowlers in West Virginia."
Everyone laughed as the two went back and forth on who is the best bowler.
oOo
Later that night, the gang was all at Lucky Lanes enjoying their game of bowling. They all split up in pairs. Madison and Richard on one team, Joey and Pacey on another, and then Bessie and Bodie. Throughout the game Richard and Pacey tried to wind up each other as Bodie minded his own business and just enjoy playing the game. He was pretty good, in fact, he play pretty fairly. Richard and Pacey were the best players, obviously. To Joey's surprise, her Nana plays really well. Her grandfather wasn't lying when he said that they were the best players. Pacey plays really well himself which made her feel bad because she is a terrible player, and because she was paired up with him it was costing him their game. The best part about it is that Pacey hasn't complained at all. He has been nothing but really good to her and supportive. Even though she knows that he would love to win the game and beat her grandfather, he would rather sacrifice the game just to make her happy. Just by him alone their score pretty much matches Bessie and Bodie all together. As for her grandparents - they are way at the top on their scores. It was already safe to say that they have won the game.
It is now up to Pacey and Joey versus Bessie and Bodie. It is time to see who is going to come up in second. The guys were up first. Bessie and Bodie won the coin toss to go up first. So it was Bodie's turn to play first. He picked up his lucky ball and gave it a good rub as he slowly walked up to his lane. Bessie was at the sidelines cheering her man on. Bodie looked serious as he concentrated on the pins ahead. With one swift move, Bodie released the ball as it roll down the lane in a rapid speed. The ball hit all ten pins as he got a strike. Bessie jumped with joy as she ran straight into Bodie's arms.
The games not over yet as it was Pacey's turn. He has been getting every strike and a few splits since he has been playing the game. Joey is just afraid that she is going to blow it for him at the end of the game. She doesn't need to worry about him. She has confidence enough to know that he is going to get yet another strike. But is that strike going to be enough for them to win the game when it's her turn? Looking over at her sister, she hopes to God that Bessie will screw up. Bessie have been playing pretty well herself tonight. If Bessie get a strike than it is game over for them. Now she really feels bad for being paired up with Pacey. Why can't she be good at any kind of game?
Joey watched as Pacey grabbed his bowling ball. He then looked over at Joey as he smirked at her. That smirk alone made her heart melt as she watched him slowly made his way towards her. They kept eye contact as she wonders what he is up too. Without a word, Pacey held up his bowling ball to her. Looking at him confused, she was afraid that he must want her to play for him. Noticing the look she made has made him smile even wider. She looked too damn cute for him to resist the urge from wanting to kiss her. But he held his ground as he continues to look at her.
"Jo? Can you kiss my ball for luck?" He asked in such a cute way where she cannot refuse.
He knew he didn't need the luck but he wanted her to do something cute for him. He wanted her to believe that she is his good luck charm. Which she is! There is no doubt about that in his mind. By doing this, he wanted to show her and everyone else how good they are together. They could be great together if only she could open her eyes and see that.
Joey was taken aback for a moment but quickly recovered when she saw the way he was looking at her. Her heart was racing in overdrive as she wanted to do more than just kiss his ball for luck. He has no idea how he makes her feel with the look he's been giving her. It's enough to drive any girl crazy. She slowly took a step closer to him; she than held up both her hands and covers his to bring the bowling ball closer to her lips. She steps on her tippy-toes as she kisses his bowling ball with a quick peck.
Pacey gave a satisfy smirk as he watches her kiss his ball. He so badly wanted to kiss those plumb lips himself. But he had to be careful because he wasn't so sure about her feelings for him yet, plus they also had an audience. Before he turns around to go to his lane, he gave her a wink as he quickly ran down to the lane in a fashionable way and rolls his bowling ball down the lane. Everyone watched as they held their breath. The ball quickly hit all ten pins as he had got a strike.
Without any warning, Joey quickly ran into Pacey's arms. He buried his head into her hair as he took in her strawberry scent as he held her tightly in his arms. Everyone clap with joy as they cheer them on as Joey's grandfather walked up to them and gave Pacey a pat on the back.
"Nice job, boy. I knew you could do it. You almost play just as good as me," Richard said as he winked at Pacey.
Pacey laughed as he went back to hugging Joey. He couldn't get enough of her as he enjoys the feel of her in his arms. Joey closed her eyes as she took in his scent. This has been the best day of her life. It doesn't matter how the night is going to end, she was just enjoying the feeling of being in his arms and nothing else matters. Even if she does lose this game - she knows that she will have his support no matter what. She feels safe in his arms and knows that she can trust him. At this very moment, she felt like the luckiest girl in the world.
Sadly, they had to break-up their hug fest as it is now Bessie's turn to play the game. It is now down between the two sisters to determine who is going to win the game. As far as Joey knows, Bessie is pretty good at this game. Therefore, she knows that her sister wouldn't have any problems winning this game.
Bessie gave Bodie a quick kiss before she went to grab her bowling ball. Without much thought, she throws the ball down the lane. The ball swerved as it knocks down eight pins only leaving two pins up one on each side. Bessie now has to do a split in order to get a spare. It's the toughest thing she has to do and she has practiced many times to do this. Every time she has attempted a spit she has missed, except for one time. At this very moment, she is praying that she gets this spare. With much concentration, Bessie is ready to throw her ball down the lane. If she got her angles right, the ball should hit the one pin in a right angle for it to slide across to hit the other pin. If she gets this right, she will get the spare and they will win the game. With one deep breath, Bessie throws her ball down the lane. She kept her eye on the ball as she watched it rolling toward the pin she wanted to hit. It was looking good towards the end and for a moment she thought that she was going to hit the pin in the angle she was going for but then the ball had a mind of its own as it went straight for the gutter.
Looks like she had lost this round but still had hope as it is now Joey's turn. In order for Joey and Pacey to win, Joey must get a strike. She cannot miss. If she does, it is game over for them and Bessie and Bodie win the game.
Joey's heart was pounding for the millionth time tonight. She needs to get this in order for them to win. She wants nothing more than to win this for Pacey. She wants to make him proud. It seems to be the most important thing for her tonight. To make Pacey proud of her. But she has never been so nervous like she is at this very moment. What if she screws this up? Will Pacey forgive her? She knows he has been nothing but supportive throughout the game but this is different. Their chance of winning is on the line now. Granted, they will only come in second if she wins this but it is better than being in last.
Joey took a deep breath as she held her bowling ball up while saying a silent little prayer. She can hear Pacey in the background telling her 'you can do it.' Her hands were starting to shake as she kept her eyes on the pins down at the end of the lane. All of a sudden, the pins were starting to look blurry. She couldn't focus as she was starting to have a mini panic attack. She couldn't do this. She couldn't bare the thought of losing this game for him.
Everyone was starting to get worried as they saw her struggle with herself. Madison was about to go to Joey's rescue when Pacey had stopped her.
"Let me handle her," he said as he kept his eye on Joey.
Madison nodded her head as she touches Pacey's shoulder gently guiding him towards her granddaughter. He slowly made his way towards Joey as he notices her shaking all over.
"Jo, what's wrong," concern filled his voice as he wrap his arm around her for comfort.
"I can't do this, Pace. I ... I just can't," she said shaking her head.
"Jo, it's okay. You'll be fine," he said as he kept his arms around her. "Remember it is only a game. It doesn't matter if we win or lose. All that matters is that we had fun playing."
Joey closed her eyes as she relaxed into his arms. It's something about him comforting her that makes her feel all better. It's like she can do anything whenever he is around. Lifting up her head, she looked him straight in the eye. Both eyes looked into each other intently. It was as if they could see into each other's souls.
Before she could stop herself, the words just flew out of her mouth. "Can you teach me to get a strike, Pace?"
Pacey smiled as he looked at her. He loves her determination. He loves the fact that she cares so much as to want to win this game. He loves her so much that it is driving him insane. It is really hard to not be able to touch her and kiss her the way he wants. But by her requesting for him to teach her the trick of getting a strike could be his chance of touching and holding her in an intimate way. So much so, that she has no clue what she is asking for.
"Well, for starter you have to let lose," he said as he quickly turn her around to face the start of the lane. He is now standing dangerously close behind her as he wraps his arm around her from behind.
Joey stiffens for a moment as she realizes how intimate their position is. Looking around nervously she notices that they are starting to create an audience.
"Relax," Pacey whisper softly in her ear. He was so close that she could feel his breath on her ear. He then lowers his left hand down to her lower abdomen as he pulls her more into him. "Just remember that you are in control of the ball," he said as he places his hand over hers holding the bowling ball.
Joey couldn't resist much longer as she enjoys the feeling of him being this close, touching her very intimately. Dirty thoughts were running in her mind as she wants nothing more than to say 'fuck it' as she jump his bones right there and then. But she maintains her ground knowing that her grandparents and sister are watching.
"Now I want you to focus on the pins ahead of you," he whispered as his lips touched the edge of her ear slightly. Both of their breathing was starting to grow heavy. He couldn't resist caressing her abdomen as he leans his head further into hers. He could hear a light whimper coming from her as he fought hard not to kiss her down her neck.
Bessie couldn't help the huge smile forming as she watches her sister and Pacey in action. She dares to look over at her grandparents and noticed that they are sporting the same huge smiles on their face.
"Try not to think about knocking down all the pins. Just relax your muscle ... pull back your arm and let it loose," he said as he demonstrate the moves with her.
When he thinks that she is ready, he loosens his grip on her as he backed away from her. Both felt a lost when he is no longer in contact with her. "Now you try," he said as he watches her intently.
Even though he is not close to her like he was, she could still feel his presence on her as she remembers what he had told her. Doing exactly what he said, she relaxes her body as she throws the ball down the lane. She watches as the ball rolls down the lane while holding her breath. The anticipation was killing her as the ball seems to be moving in slow motion. Before any of them knew it, the ball had knocked down all ten pins as she had finally landed her first strike in the game.
She didn't know what was going on at first because she was still in shock by the fact that she had gotten a strike. It didn't sink in until she realizes Pacey holding her up in the air shouting how they have won! She couldn't believe that she did it! She had won the game for them! Even though it was second place, it was still first in her book. It was a sign of victory and she grasped every moment of it. At that moment she realizes that Pacey is indeed the love of her life. He made her feel like she could do anything if she put her heart into it. Tonight, he made her feel things that she didn't know even existed. Such strong desirable feelings that she ever thought could be possible. He has awaken something within her that only he can possess. It was all him and him alone. Therefore, it is safe to say that Pacey Witter has stolen Joey Potter's heart.
Bored out of his mind, Dawson was sitting on his bed flipping through channels as he was trying to find something good to watch. He don't understand how they have all these channels and not have anything good to watch. It's always the same old boring stuff that he already saw the day before. Touching his stomach as he heard it growling, he realize that he haven't eaten all day. Deciding to quit surfing through the channels since there isn't anything worth watching anyway, he got up out of his bed as he made a beeline to the kitchen. On his way, he could hear music echoing throughout the house. Wondering who could be here because he thought that he was the only one home today. As he drew closer to the kitchen, the music was getting louder and he could hear laughter going on. He didn't know what was going on as he heard a male and a female voice coming from the kitchen.
When he finally reached his destination he was surprised to see his mom and dad in the kitchen dancing to the music they were playing. From the looks of it, they were really into it as they continue to laugh and kiss each other not noticing their son standing there watching them. Dawson couldn't help but to shake his head as he continue to watch his parents in action.
Mitch was in the middle of spinning Gail around when she caught a glimpse of her son watching them. Surprised by the sudden audience, Gail accidentally ran into Mitch as he quickly held tight to her to prevent them from falling over. Gail looked up at Mitch sheepishly as she quickly recovered and remembered that Dawson was in the room.
Backing away from Mitch, Gail turn her attention back towards Dawson. It was seconds later when Mitch finally realize that his son was standing there with a surprised look on his face.
"Mom? Dad? I thought you two were out of town," Dawson said confused.
"We were, honey. But we decided to come back home early," Gail spoke up first.
"And we didn't think that you were going to be here," Mitch jumped in.
"Why would you think that I wasn't going to be home?" Asked Dawson.
"I don't know," Gail shrugged. "Maybe it's because you usually always be at Joey's or Pacey's."
"I don't always be there," Dawson said as he looked at his parents strangely. Something doesn't seem right here. None of this seem to be adding up. He took a good long hard look at his parents. They both seem happy. And in love? He have always known that his parents have love each other but for some what reason he find it to be odd, all of a sudden.
"Honey, are you okay?" Gail couldn't help but to asked as she watched her son.
Everything seem to be spinning as he try to focus on what he is missing. "I don't know," Dawson answered honestly. Really he didn't know how he is feeling at the moment.
Mitch was starting to get concern as he notice his son is on a verge to pass out. Acting quickly, Mitch went to his son and grab a hold of him as he guide him to a chair at the kitchen table.
"Sit here while I go get you a glass of water," Mitch said as he made his way to get Dawson a glass of water.
Gail, then, sat next to Dawson as she place her hand over his. Looking at him made her heart melt. Seeing him now remind her when he was at a very young age seeking for his mother's attention. Dawson was always a mama's boy. She would spoil him and baby him because he was her only son. Her little miracle child. The doctor had told her that she couldn't have any children, but along came Dawson who turn out to be her miracle baby. Her one and only prize and joy. So if anything were to happen to him, she wouldn't know what to do. It is bad enough that she is seeing him suffering whatever battles he is facing now. Not knowing what to do for her son pains her.
Dawson can tell that his mother is concern for him, as well. He wanted to tell her that something is not right. How can he explain it to her when she seem so happy? This is what he wants; for his parents to be happy. So, what's the problem?
Then it hit him...
"Gloria ..." it came out as a whisper.
"What was that, honey?" Gail asked concern.
"Gloria," Dawson repeated.
"Who?"
Of course! That was it! His parents were in the middle of a separation. That's why things seem to be weird from the start. It was as if nothing had happened. Sure, everything seem so familiar and right when he walked in on his parents earlier. It was as if he had went back in time when his parents used to annoy him when they were all over each other. But somehow that other women had managed to invade her way into his mind.
Mitch came back with the glass of water in his hand ready to hand it over to his son. One look at his son, he knew that something is wrong.
"What is it, son?" Mitch knew that Dawson seem to be a bit distant from him. Whatever it is that he has done - he wanted to get to the bottom of it.
"What happened to Gloria?" Dawson looked dare at his father with dagger shooting from his eyes.
Mitch looked uncomfortable as Gail try to figure out what the hell is going on?
"What are you talking about? Who's Gloria?" Gail can tell that there is something going on between them that they're not telling her. Whatever it is, she know it has something to do with this Gloria.
"Really? Even now you want to ruin it?" Mitch said as he place the glass of water on the table. He than walked around behind Dawson as he made his way next to Gail.
His head was spinning as he try to figure out what kind of world he is living in. Surely, he must be dreaming but everything seem to be so real. One thing is for certain, no matter what world he is living in - it all ends the same. Dream or not, this is his reality. It may cut him like a knife but he have to face the fact that he would never get his parents back the way they use to. From this point on, things would never be the same.
He couldn't stop the tears from flowing as he continue to watch his parents. His father had his arms around his mother as he try to reassure her that everything is okay. It was a picture perfect moment and yet, he couldn't stop crying. All his emotions were being poured out as he watch the scene in front of him. He couldn't control how he is feeling at that moment. Anger, sadness, betrayal, resentment - it was all there.
He had wished and longed for his parents to get back together but the cruel reality is still haunting him. Reminding him that this isn't real. What he is seeing right in front of his eyes will be gone forever.
Ignoring their son, they were lost in each other. Gail may not know what is going on but Mitch does. He knows what Dawson is trying to do but he is not going to let that happen. It's funny - his son is just as stubborn as he is. Looking over at Dawson, he also realize that his son is weak. Something he can't have at the moment. He want his son to be strong. Dawson needs to know how to fight back. He needs to fight back. He needs to fight all the battles he is facing.
Dawson caught his father's eyes as they could read each other's minds. It seem he had got the message loud and clear as Mitch continue to look at Dawson with a devious glint. He than smirked as he notice his son seem to understood; all the while holding on to Gail more tightly to him.
For some reason, Dawson wanted to laugh at the situation but couldn't. It seems his father wanted to piss him off and it's working. Trying very hard to control his tears right along his temper, he couldn't as he slam his fists hard on the table as the glass of water came crashing down to the kitchen floor.
Waking up with a jolt, Dawson was breathing heavily as he took in his surroundings. He soon realize that what he was experiencing was indeed a dream. Whatever it was it felt so damn real to him. Looking over at his alarm clock on his night stand, he notice that it is a little past mid-night. His head was killing him as he lifted his hand to rub the side of his temple with his palm. What the hell was that dream about? It didn't quite made any sense to him. It was as if his father was trying to tell him something. But what is it? What do his father want him to do? All these questions were just hurting his head even more as he is in a desperate need for an aspirin.
Just as he was about to get out of bed, he heard a loud crash coming from downstairs living room. Soon after he heard yelling. Headache forgotten, Dawson quickly jumped out of bed and made a dash to the stairway. Rushing down the steps he almost lost his footing but quickly remain his balance when he grab a hold of the railing.
When he finally made it to the bottom of the steps, his heart broke at the sight he was seeing. His mother was on the couch, clutching the phone in her hand as she was crying. He assume that it was his father on the other end of the line. What c aught his attention was the broken wine glasses all over the living room floor by the fireplace. His guess is that the conversation that they are having is not going so very well.
"Mitch, I swear to God, if you don't bring your sorry ass home ..." Gail yelled.
Dawson stood back as he watch his mother yelling into the phone. He can only hear one side of the conversation but know that his father must be spending yet another night with that woman.
"Screw you, Mitch! We're suppose to be working out our marriage, not out for you to be screwing some other whore!" Gail screamed as she slam the phone in the receiver. She couldn't help it anymore as she burst out with tears.
Dawson couldn't stand back any longer as he ran to his mother side. Wrapping his arms around her, he continue repeating that 'everything is going to be okay.' He's not sure if it is true but one thing is for certain; he now understood what his dream was about. His father wanted him to be strong. Not only for his mother - but for himself, as well ...
oOo
In a couple of days, her grandparents will be going back home and her fake relationship with Pacey will be over. She knew it will have to be over some time but the week seem to have gone by so fast. Sitting out on her porch, Joey closed her eyes as she enjoy the fresh air. She was home by herself while babysitting her nephew. She had finally got Alex to fall asleep and now it's time for her to have some relax time.
Dawson stood at the front of her yard as he watch Joey. The more he see her the more beautiful she look. For the life of him, he couldn't understand why he didn't see it before. She was always there, standing in front of him and he never even once think twice to look her way. A small smile crept his feature as he thought back to their argument at the movie theater ...
"Nothing gets to you, Dawson. Your so far remove from reality that you can't even see what's in front of you," she said.
"What are you talking about?" He asked not knowing where she is going with this.
"Your life. This freaking fairy tale that you don't even know it. You just want conflict for that script your writing. Stop living in the movies. Grow up."
He didn't understood it than but he understand it now. She wanted him to see her; to really see her. It took him a while but he get it. He now realize her feelings for him. And the feelings are mutual. He will take it slow for the moment. Let her have time to realize how much he actually do care for her. Let her see how much he really loves her. As soon as she realize his feelings for her, the quicker she will come to his side. He will be waiting and he will be ready for her.
Joey almost jumped out of her seat when she notice Dawson standing in front of her.
"I didn't mean to scare you. You just look so peaceful that I didn't want to disturb you," Dawson said as he made it up the steps and took a seat next to her.
Joey smiled over at him as she realize that it has been a while since she saw him last. He look tired and ruff. She could tell that things aren't going well at the Leery's household. Her heart goes out to him. She haven't been much of a friends to him lately. Which is why she is glad that he had stopped by. This could be her chance to be there for him. For them to catch up.
"How are you holding up, Dawson?" She know exactly how he is feeling. She just want him to open up.
"Exhausted," he sighed. "It appear that my dad has found someone else."
"Oh my God, Dawson. I'm so sorry," Joey said as she reach out to grab a hold of his hand.
Dawson looked over at Joey as he gave her a bittersweet smile. This is what he needed. To be by her side. It was enough to make his day a whole lot better. He place his other free hand on top of hers - letting her know by being here with her was comforting enough.
"Well, enough about me. What have yo been up to?" He needed to take his mind off of things. What better way to do it than to talk about her.
Joey was a bit uncomfortable with that question. She couldn't tell him that she and Pacey have been posing as a couple. Not with what is going on with him at the moment. He wouldn't understand if she told him the truth.
"Nothing much. Just been hanging out with my grandparents. They have been here for almost a week now. They will be leaving in a couple of days," she said looking down avoiding his eyes at all cost.
Dawson smiled as he looked at her. He can tell that she is nervous. For what? He didn't know. All he knows is that she look adorable when she's nervous. The fact that he made her nervous made him feel good inside.
"You're nervous," he couldn't help to state the obvious.
Joey looked up at him with surprise. It's funny how both Pacey and Dawson know her equally.
"It's ok, Jo. You don't have to be nervous. Although, I do like the fact that I make you nervous," he stated.
Joey couldn't help but to smile as she try to relax herself. Looking at her smile made him smile ten times more. It felt good to smile for the first time in a really long time. The fact that she is the reason why he is smiling made his life a little more easier. It's like he can breathe again now that he is around her.
That is the same way how Pacey feel when he is with her. But at this exact moment, he doesn't feel that way. Watching them from afar, all he can feel is jealousy. He can't help it. Every time he see those two together - it just kills him. But he can't do anything about it. Both of them are his friends. He know he shouldn't be feeling this way. But the way that they look at each other and touch each other, remind him that he can never have that with her. Not in the way that he wants. He wants her to be his girl. He wants Dawson to know that she belongs to him. He wants everyone to be okay with that. For the first time in his life he wants something that is meaningful. Why can't he have what he wants for a change? Why does Dawson always have to come first?
Pacey stood still as he watch Dawson and Joey embrace each other. He has no clue what they were talking about but from the looks of it he can tell that it was important. The longing look that they gave each other let him know that there are still hidden feelings there. Watching them, he could see how much Dawson loves Joey and vice versa. It pains him to watch but for the life of him - he just couldn't look away. He had always known Joey's feelings for Dawson and how strong their friendship are; but he had also thought that he and Joey had this special bond between them. Could he be wrong about that? Was it just wishful thinking on his part?
Pacey quickly hid himself when he saw Dawson heading his way. Taking the time to actually study his face, Pacey saw what the hadn't seen in a long time - happiness. He saw pure genuine happiness written all over Dawson's face. He hadn't seen that look since Dawson found out about his mother's affair and Jen lying to him about her sex life.
He quickly turn to face the other way as if that would make him invisible while Dawson walked by pass him. When he realize that he haven't been discovered, he turn to face him as he watch him walk away. Whatever happen between Dawson and Joey, he hope that it wouldn't effect their pretend relationship they have going for the time being.
oOo
Richard had suggested that everyone have dinner at the Steakhouse since they will be leaving in a couple of days. Of course, they have invited Pacey to tag along since he became part of the family. They were having steak and potatoes and just enjoying each other company.
Both Richard and Madison beamed when they saw Pacey cut up Joey's steak for her and handed her plate to her. It was a cute sight to see how much he really cares for their granddaughter. They can both see how much Pacey and Joey love each other and just knew how much they deserve each other. Both Richard and Madison already knew that Pacey and Joey aren't really a couple. They knew from the start. But they also know their granddaughter. They know that Joey has strong hidden feelings for Pacey and they could tell that Pacey feels the same way. That's why they didn't say anything when Bessie said that they are a couple. They wanted to see how this fake relationship will take them. Maybe a little push from them will help these two kids realize how much they mean for each other.
Richard and Madison glance at each other with knowing smiles. Being the matchmaker that they are ... they just know that Pacey and Joey are going to be alright. They can finally leave knowing that their granddaughter have someone who can look out for her. Be there to protect her when she need it. Someone who will be by her side no matter what. Watching them two for the past week shows how much Pacey values their granddaughter. They know they can trust him with her. They also know that it wouldn't be easy but they already can tell that Pacey and Joey are end game.
"Can you pass me the salt?" Joey said as she pointed to the salt shaker placed in the middle of the table in front of Pacey.
Pacey nodded. "Sure," he said as he reach over to grab the salt shaker and hand it over to Joey.
"Thanks," she said as she gave him her famous smile. She then added some salt on to her potatoes.
Pacey's heart melted as he continue to watch her. What he had saw earlier between her and Dawson has already been forgotten. For a moment there, he had forgot what he was worried about. So what she had saw Dawson and hugged him in a tight embrace. It doesn't mean anything. They have hugged each other many times before and that haven't bothered him before. So why should it bother him now? Like he said, it was nothing. Just two friends being concern for one another. That's all. It was no biggie. They are good. Being here with her is all good.
He continue to watch her as she eats, oblivious to the fact that everyone else was watching him.
He have to admit, he is going to miss Joey's grandparents when they are gone. They really did made him feel like he is part of the family. It is a nice - warm feeling that he had never really experienced. Not seven with his own blood relative, had they ever shown any kind of affection towards him like Joey's family does.
He smiled to himself as he couldn't help how happy he is feeling at that exact moment. This past week has been going really well for Pacey; so well that he don't want it to end. He, than, realize that he will have to get back to reality and he and Joey will have to end their fake relationship.
And then what? Once it's over will she run into Dawson's arms?
That thought has always crossed his mind. He couldn't shake the feeling that Dawson will eventually win her over. When that happens, all he can do is just grin and bare it. Except the fact that he will never have her. He will never get the girl who was always made out to be for Dawson. He can't help the fact that she likes Dawson. She likes him first and that's how its always going to be.
Pacey stopped chewing his steak as soon as he heard a familiar laugh coming for his right side a few tables down behind him. He made way to look and spotted Mitch smiling happily with some gorgeous looking young lady. At first, he couldn't believe his eyes, but the more he listen intently to the guys voice - the more he is convinced that it is indeed Mitch at the restaurant with another women.
How did this happen? He didn't know. But he did recall his conversation with Dawson a few days back mentioning something about his father seeing someone else. This must be the girl Dawson was talking about. He can see why Dawson is upset, the women is a straight up knock-out! Mitch certainly know how to pick them, that's for sure.
As he continue to watch them, it started to make sense why Dawson showed up at Joey's earlier. It is because Dawson needed someone to talk to. Even thought that visit is strictly platonic, it still hurt with the fact that Dawson went to Joey instead of him. He had told Dawson if he needed someone to talk to - he is here for him. Is he not important enough for his best friend to confide in him? Do he mean that little to Dawson?
Pacey shook out of his thoughts the minute he noticed Mitch stood up to head to the restroom. Excusing himself, he stood up and followed Mitch on tow. Whatever is going on with the Leery's, Pacey wanted to get to the bottom of it. The thing about him is that he is willing to push his personal feelings aside in order to help out his friends who are more important to him. He is willing to give up everything for Dawson, even if it means for him to be discovered by Dawson's father that he is here having dinner with Joey's family.
Pacey is willing to give all that up for the sake of his best friend. Because that's what best friends are for. Contrary to what Dawson may think - Pacey really do care for him and want to see him happy. He don't want to see him suffer like this and he just wish that Dawson knew that.
Mitch quickly entered the restroom as he quickly looked around and checked the stalls to make sure that no one else was there. He had spotted Pacey earlier and knew that he will be following him there. Knowing the conversation they are going to have; he didn't need other people knowing their business. Capeside is a small town and word would definitely get out.
Not a minute went by as Pacey burst through the restroom door. He stopped short on his tracks the minute he spotted Mitch standing in front of him - waiting for his arrival. Pacey had to admit that he is a bit surprised. He didn't think that Mitch had noticed him.
Without saying a word, Mitch had walked around Pacey to lock the door behind him. Whatever he had to say - he didn't want any interruption.
Noticing that action, Pacey had to second guess himself. Is it really a good idea to confront Mitch here of all places? Maybe not. Maybe this was a bad idea from the start. He should have just minded his own business and butt out. Dawson's a big boy, he should be able to take care of his own family problems - not him. But since he's already involved he might as well see this thing threw.
"Pacey, Pacey, Pacey. What can I do for you?" Mitch said as he lean against the door with his arms crossed.
Pacey slowly turned around to face Mitch as he started to regret the fact that he had followed him to the restroom. "Mr. Leery, surprised to see you here," Pacey opted.
Mitch smirked. "The feelings mutual," he said as he stood up off the door and made his way towards Pacey. "I had no idea that you and Joey were so close. But than again, I should have guessed since the night at the festival."
Yup, this was a big mistake. But he is not going to let Mr. Leery intimidate him now. Not when he is trying to turn all this on him. This isn't about him and Joey. This is about the fact that Mr. Leery is out having dinner with another woman. He have to remind himself that. He refuse to let Mr. Leery make him feel guilty just so he can feel less guilty with the fact that he has been caught by his son's best friend.
"Mr. Leery ... now you know Joey and I are just friends -"
"Right," Mitch said as he pointed a finger at Pacey. "But who's kidding whom here, Pace. There is something more. Just as I know that my son share the same interest to the same girl as you."
Pacey let his words float around a bit in his head. Mr. Leery is right. He and Dawson are both in love with the same women. But he will deal with that problem later. What he have to focus on is the here and now. And right now, he had saw Mr. Leery with someone who is clearly not Mrs. Leery.
"And what about you, Mr. Leery? Gail made one big mistake and that's ok for you to go around town with a new women on your arm," Pacey couldn't help but feel frustrated. Mr. Leery had hit him where he knew it would hurt - the heart.
"Pacey, I don't expect you to understand; but this is grown people business. I do appreciate that you try to stick up for my son but that ends here. Now I will keep your little secret about the Potter girl only because I've already hurt Dawson enough. But, Pacey, mark my words, you will have to be the one to tell Dawson about Joey," with that parting words, Mitch left the restroom to get back to his date.
Pacey stood still as he watch Mr. Leery left him alone. A single tear escape his eye as he knew that Mr. Leery is right. He have to tell Dawson how he really feel for Joey. It looks like he will have to pay Dawson a visit.
"Die, die!" Pacey said as he tap away furiously on his video game controller.
Dawson laughed as he watch Pacey kill all the zombie villagers that were attacking his character. Pacey had surprised him when he had showed up at his doorstep with his video games. It has been a while since he and Pacey had ever hung out. Pacey had wanted to play NFL with him but he wasn't in the mood to play video games at the moment. He'd rather watch Pacey play. So, Pacey opt to play Resident Evil 4.
Dawson continue to watch as Pacey concentrate on his game. It is nice to have a friend around when you need them. Even if it just sitting around watching another friend playing a video game while doing nothing else. The past week he have been miserable without anyone to talk to or just hang out with. It is nice to be able to see both Joey and Pacey the same week. Lately, they both were too busy to hang out. Joey with her grandparents being in town and Pacey always having to do something or other for his father. So that left him alone stuck with his parents issues. So you can imagine his surprise when he saw Pacey at his doorstep.
"Is something on your mind, man?" Pacey asked as his eyes never left the television screen.
Dawson sighed as he looked over at Pacey. "I was just thinking how cool it is that we get to hang out like this."
Pacey smiled. "Yeah, it is nice," he agreed.
"So ... what do you want to do after this?" Dawson asked.
"I don't know," Pacey shrugged. "Whatever you want to do, man."
Dawson's eyes lit up as he looked at Pacey. Which didn't go unnoticed by Pacey himself.
"What is it? What's with you, man? Why your face is like that?"
"I just got a great idea!" Dawson said excitedly.
"O-kay ..." Pacey said unsure if he want to hear it.
"Let's go spy on Joey," Dawson said with a serious look on his face.
Pacey paused the game as he turn to look at Dawson. "You're joking right? Why in God's name would we do something like that? For one: have you met Joey? And two: the moment she catches us, you know that she and I are going to get into this huge fight where there is going to be some kind of a bickering contest."
"What?" Dawson snorted.
"Dawson, man, you don't understand. That girl is a nuisance. Every time I'm around her something bad happens," Pacey sighed.
Dawson laughed as he shook his head at Pacey's exaggeration. But what Dawson doesn't know is the truth behind why Pacey doesn't want to go spy on Joey. The thought of them being caught by her grandparents scare him. What if they expose the fact that Pacey is in a "suppose" relationship with Joey and Dawson finds out. All hell will break loose than. Not only will Dawson find out about their fake relationship, he will expose the fact that they aren't in any kind of a relationship at all. Than, what will Joey's grandparents do? They will be upset and devastated that their own granddaughter and the guy they thought was their granddaughter's boyfriend had both deceive them. He can not have that conscience in his head. They are both very nice people who he adore and looks up too. He would hate to be the one to disappoint them.
Dawson stared at Pacey with concern. He notice that Pacey haven't continue with his game as he seem to be in deep thought. "Is there something wrong? Do you really not want to go and see what's up with Joey?"
Pacey shook out of his thoughts as he look over at Dawson with a guilty expression. "Why can't we just hang out here? It's been a while since us guys had any alone time together."
Dawson took Pacey's words to consideration as he conceited. "Okay, sure. We can do that."
Pacey sighed with relief as he started back to his game. He felt bad for having to continue lying to Dawson. The whole reason why he came here in the first place was to talk to Dawson about his feelings for Joey. But something tells him that now is not the right time. Not with Dawson is going through a rough time with his parents. He rather wait till things are settled before he come clean and confess his true feelings for Joey.

Mitch looked at the time on his watch as he sat comfortably on the white sofa in Gloria's apartment. He took the time to look around at the place since it has been his first time being here. Everything looks so neat and clean; very elegant. When he first walked in to her apartment there was this little entrance hallway where he took off his shoes and a closet to hang his coat. Then along the hallway, you will have to make a little left turn and step down a few steps into the living room area. From the looks of it - it is a very nice large living room area. He could tell that Gloria must love the color white because the whole living room area is nothing but white. Her sofas are white, the walls are an off white color, her table set has a stand with white marble structure. The top of the table is clear glass. She even has each round end tables that are decorated with candles in all different size and color. The walls are decorated with pictures of paintings of sunsets over the ocean. She doesn't have any carpets on the floor but it has a nice wooden beige like color to it that fits with the white in the room. Ahead of him is a very nice long fire place display. When you turn on the fire place by the remote control, the fire will lit up one by one in a fast pace from left to right across from the wall. At the bottom of the fire place has this nice white marble stand which has clear crystals decorated inside it. Which make the fire place look even more fancier. Above the fire place is a 90" flat screen TV placed on the wall. It make the whole living room look like a theater room. To his right is an open space kitchen with a nice long island in the middle. The counter top of the island has this nice beige marble color which matches the wooden floor. Also, she has these tall stools which line up along the island and its seats have a wave shape to it that also matches the same beige like color. In the middle of the island it has a little fire like place to it which light up with fire and also has clear white crystals decorate around it.
Mitch have to admit the girl have her place hooked up. He wonder what she does for a living to have such expensive things. He did recall her saying that she came from a rich family but he had thought she was just yanking his chain. Not once did he thought that she was serious.
Gloria finally came back to the living room to join him from the kitchen. She was carrying a tray of coffee for them. She carefully place the tray on her glass table as Mitch quickly grab his cup of coffee. Careful while he was taking a sip, he didn't want to spill anything on her white sofa. Since this is his first time being here he was starting to feel a bit awkward at the moment.
The same goes to Gloria as she watch Mitch take a sip of his coffee. She and Mitch have never once had an affair despite what people may think. When they met, Mitch had this plan that he wanted to get back at his wife. He asked for her help, and even though she felt a little uncomfortable about it - since this is her first time doing something like this - she agreed to go along with his plan.
He told her that he and his wife were going through some problems. He found out that his wife was cheating on him and he want to get back at her by fooling everyone that he is having an affair. He wanted her to taste her own medicine for what she had done to him. So he came up with this plan by staying over night at a motel. He made it as if he was staying with her so his wife could think that but really he was on his own in a motel room he had rented. Than he had called Gloria up and tell her to bring her favorite perfume so she can spray it on him to make them think that he has been sleeping with another woman. Than he came up with a plan for her to show up at their home wearing the same perfume she sprayed on him and come up with an act as if they were seeing each other. That was the first time in her life have she ever been so afraid but was surprised that she had managed to pull off the act. Seeing his wife and son like that had really crushed her. So much so, that she almost caved and wanted to tell Mitch that she wanted to stop. But the way Mitch was that day left her scared. She was afraid that anger toward his wife might reflect back on her if she even once think about backing out. So, she kept her mouth shut and continue on with his plan.
The night before, he wanted to treat her out to dinner for her wonderful performance and going along with the plan. Even than she felt uncomfortable going out to public places with him. He assured her that the Steakhouse they were going to eat at rarely have people they know be there. But to both of their surprise, Mitch had a run in with people that he know. After his conversation to a nice looking young man in the restroom. Mitch had cut their dinner short and decided to end the night.
So now here they are for the first time meeting at her apartment. She was surprise when Mitch had called her up saying that he wanted to meet up with her here. She doesn't know what this meeting is for but she hope it has something to do with him wanting to put an end to this plan.
"Are you having second thoughts?" Mitch finally asked as he placed his coffee cup back into the tray.
Gloria looked at Mitch with surprise. She didn't think that he would notice her struggle with continuing on with his plan.
Mitch chuckled with the look that she gave. "Why so surprised? I knew when I first approach you that I would be asking for too much. I know that my plan is a lot to handle. I get that. And I understand if you want to back out. I'm just so grateful for what you have done for me already. Which is why I've decided to end it."
Shock and relief ran through her. Never have she expected that this day would come. She knew it would have to end eventually but she didn't expect it to end this soon. She had wished and hoped - but now she don't have to anymore.
"Say something, you're starting to freak me out here," Mitch said jokingly as he looked at her.
"You're still in love with her," she breathed.
"Huh?" He asked confused. He didn't expect her to say that.
"You're still in love with her," she repeated. "And that's ok. Which is why you did all this. You couldn't let go with the fact that she hurt you and you needed to find a way to hurt her back. Now that the damage is done, I'm glad that you decided to call it quits. It's time for you to forgive her, Mitch. It's time for the both of you to move on from this. Talk to her, work it out, and now matter what happens - know that I will always be here to support you."
Mitch smiled as he looked at Gloria. This is the reason why he care for her. She is right, he still do love Gail, but he also do care for her, too. At that very moment, he was starting to understand Gail when she cheated on him with Bob ...
Today is the day when Joey's grandparents are heading back to West Virginia. Joey had called him over saying that her grandparents wanted to see him before they leave. He, too, wanted to be there to see off the two people who became important in his live. If it wasn't for them, he would never had the chance to spend as much time with their granddaughter like he did this past week. He would never have learned the true meaning of love among family. He would never receive love in return from the two people who he wished was his real grandparents. He would never get to experience what it would be like to be in a relationship with the women that he love. He would never get to experience all of it this past week if it wasn't for them. This past week has been a blessing. He will always cherish it. He will never forget Richard and Madison. He could never thank them enough for being in his life.
He finally reached the Potter house as he notice Bodie helping Richard load their luggage into their truck.
Richard was the first to spot him as he smiled and waved him over. Without any hesitation, Pacey walked over towards the old man.
"You finally made it. I was beginning to think that you wasn't going to show up," Richard smiled warmly.
"And what? Miss the opportunity to bid farewell to the man that I almost could have beat in bowling," he laughed. "You know if it was just the two of us playing I could have beat you, old man."
Richard laughed heartily as he smack Pacey on the back. "You tickle, young man. I will never forget that wit of yours."
"Everything is all set," Bodie said as he emerge from behind the truck.
"Well, looks like we should start hitting the road," Richard said as eh put his arm around Pacey. "I trust you will take care of my granddaughter while we're gone?"
"Of course, sir," Pacey said sincerely.
"Pacey! Oh my word! I was beginning to think that you wasn't going to show up," Madison said as she and Joey walked down the steps to greet him.
When she finally reached him, she surprised him by engulfing him in a bear hug.
"I'm going to miss you!" Madison said as she held on to him tightly.
"Okay, that's enough, Maddie. You're going to squeeze the poor kid to death!" Richard try to pull his wife away from Pacey.
Madison wouldn't budge as she continue to hold on to him tightly.
"Come on now, you're embarrassing me. You're starting to scare the poor kid," Richard said as he looked at both Pacey and Joey apologetically.
"It's fine. I'm going to miss you, too," Pacey said as he responded by giving her a tight hug back.
Joey smiled as she is loving the bond Pacey has with her grandparents.
"Oh, Maddie!" Richard groan as he continue to watch his wife embarrassingly.
Bodie couldn't help but to burst out in laughter as he watch the scene in front of him. It had brought back memories when he had first met Madison and how she was towards him the same way. Now it looks like Pacey has officially became part of the family.
"Welcome to the family, bra," Bodie said as he pat Pacey on the shoulder and made his way into the house to join Bessie while tending to their child.
"Ok, Joey, you're next. Come and give your Nana a hug," Madison said as she made her way to Joey.
Richard and Pacey shared a look as they watch the two women embrace. They said their goodbyes as Pacey and Joey along with Bessie and Bodie, watched as Richard and Madison drove away.
When their truck was out of view, Pacey grab a hold of Joey's hand as he pull her away for a walk. They walked silently side by side for about a good 15 minutes until Pacey decide to break the silence.
"Sorry it took me a while to get here," he said.
"It's ok," she shrugged. "At least you made it in time to see them off."
"Yeah," Pacey smiled.
"So ..." Joey started.
"So ..." Pacey repeated. "I guess this is the end," he finished.
"Huh?" Joey asked startled.
"Our relationship," even as he said it he already regret it.
"Oh," she said as her heart was breaking.
Both knew that it would have to come down to this. They had to put an end to their fake relationship. The whole reason why it started was because of her grandparents. Now that they are no longer around, there is no reason for them to continue on with this charade.
"It looks like things will have to get back to normal. You, resenting me while pining for Dawson. Me, being the biggest jerk who loves nothing more than to annoy you," despite what he was saying he couldn't help but to smile at that last part.
Joey didn't get the humor as she took it the wrong way. "Sorry it has been such a bore for you. I guess you can get back to your life now!" She stormed off without waiting to hear what he have to say.
Pacey stood shock as he didn't know what to do. "What the hell just happened?" He said to himself as he watched her storm away.
oOo
Stupid Pacey! He is nothing but a big stupid jerk! He is a fool to think that she still have feelings for Dawson. As if this past week had meant nothing to him. Couldn't he tell that she has feelings for him? Or maybe he just didn't want to see it.
Maybe he doesn't feel the same way, a voice taunted her head.
"Fine! Be that way!" She shouted into think air. "Who needs you! You're nothing but a big bully!"
Than why do you still care so much? A voice continue to taunt her.
At that moment, she couldn't help but to pour her heart out as she cried. This past week had been great up until this moment. She knew that it was going to end but she didn't think that it was going to end this way. She had hoped that Pacey would change his mind and ask her to be his girlfriend for real. No more pretending - just being a real couple. This past week have gave her a glimpse of what it would have been like if she were to date Pacey for real. For what she had experienced, she knew that it would have been great.
Walking for the past hour and a half, Joey didn't realize where she was heading. For some reason she ended up here. Climbing the ladder that lead to the familiar window, Joey went in to Dawson's bedroom.
Surprised to see Joey, Dawson sat up in his bed as he can tell by the look of her that something is wrong.
"Joey?" Dawson said as concern over took him.
"Dawson ..." was all Joey muster as she laid in his arms.
