Episode 12: Beauty Contest
Previously on Dawson's creek ...
Dawson took Joey back to the Eiffel Tower as he had promised himself he would. Dawson has never been so nervous in his life as he took a glance at Joey. This is the moment he has been waiting for all day. To finally tell Joey how he feels.
Clearing his throat, he started, "Joey?"
"Yeah?" She answered still not looking at him but out of the Tower.
"I love you, and I think we should be together," he held his breath to see what she is going to say.
Joey froze as her eyes grew wide. She slowly turns to Dawson as for the first time in her life she saw in his eyes that he is very serious.
Now we continue with Dawson's Creek ...
oOo
What the hell!? Since when did Dawson start having feelings for her? And where does he come off saying that he thinks they should be together? It's her choice to make, too, if she wants to be with him or not! Also, what about Pacey? She never thought that she would fall for someone like him. At the beginning of the summer, if Dawson would have confessed his feelings for her sooner then she probably would have jumped at the chance to date him. But now things have changed. Her feelings for him have changed. She no longer has feelings for Dawson. Not in that way, anyway. She only has feelings for Pacey. The one who is currently in a hotel room right now alone with Jen Lindley. The one who is currently breaking her heart. The one who she wished at this very moment was the one who is standing here in front of her confessing his feelings for her. The one who she would not hesitate to reply: "Yes Pacey, I love you, too! Let's be together."
Oh, how she wishes that was so.
But instead, it turns out to be Dawson. Her childhood friend whom she once thought that she had feelings for. How could this have happened? How did everything get so screwed up?
Dawson noticed the hesitation in Joey and is starting to feel a little scared. He thought that this is what Joey would have wanted. He was so sure that Joey had feelings for him. He thought back to the beginning of the summer. The way she reacted when he showed interest in Jen. All the smart remarks and comments she made. All the signs were there. It was clear that she was jealous of Jen. At the time he tried to brush it off thinking that she was only jealous of Jen because she was afraid that Jen was going to steal her best friend away. But the more he thought about it, the more he was convinced that Joey was jealous is because she likes him. So why the hesitation now?
He notices that Joey was about to say something but he had to cut her off first.
"Joey, it's okay. You don't have to answer right away. I will give you some time to think about it. But promise me that you will give me an answer," Dawson said hopefully.
Joey was thankful that Dawson didn't want an answer right away. She didn't know what to tell him, especially with this whole situation with Pacey. She needs to figure out where he stands. As for Dawson ... she does have feelings for him. But only friendship wise. With what is going on between her and Pacey plus Dawson's confession, she would need time to process and think.
"Okay, Dawson. I will think about it," she nodded.
Capeside, North Carolina
The Freshmen class is back home and things have changed between the four main groups. Dawson and Joey are awkward towards each other. Pacey is still ignoring Joey as he continues to give her the cold shoulder. Pacey and Jen seem to have an understanding as they seem very close. Dawson seems to be ticked off by Pacey's behavior towards Joey. And the whole cycle just keeps going on with them of unspoken words. Too many misunderstandings that need to be resolved.
Pacey spotted his brother Doug as he offered Jen a ride but Jen declined to say that she would go back with Dawson and Joey. A little disappointed that he had been rejected, Pacey shrug it off and proceeded to take a lift with his brother.
Jen then turns to Dawson asking him if he wouldn't mind walking a little ahead of them so she could have some alone time with Joey. To her surprise, Dawson had agreed without a fight.
Jen turns to Joey ignoring the glare that was shooting her way. She needs to let Joey know that there is nothing going on between her and Pacey, without Joey knowing that she knows about the two of them. But how can she explain this to Joey?
"Joey? Is everything okay? I've noticed that things seemed to be different between you and Pacey," Jen started.
"I don't think it's any of your business, Jen," Joey said bitterly.
"But I want to help. I want us to be friends," Jen said, sincerely.
Joey looked at her and saw that she is serious. She thought for a moment and figured that Jen isn't all that bad. Thinking back, she did realize that Jen didn't show any signs that she is interested in Pacey. In fact, Jen has shown countless times how much she is into Dawson. Her best friend; the one whom he himself has just confessed his feelings for her hours ago. How did everything get so complicated?
"Alright, Jen, if you must know I think that Pacey is mad at me because I've withheld information from him," Joey replied.
Jen smirked to herself. Good. We are off to a good start, she thought.
"There is something that I have to confess, Joey," Jen stated as she told Joey everything, careful not to reveal Pacey's feelings for Joey since it is his secret to tell.
oOo
A week later ...
School is coming to its end as all the students are super excited about summer vacation. Many were busy getting ready for the end of the school year exams while others were busy getting ready for their graduation. Joey was just thankful that Dawson hadn't pushed her about his confession since Paris. He had promised her that he would give her some time to think; and she is so glad that he had stayed true to his word. She still had a lot to think about. For starters, her situation with Pacey. Ever since they got back from their trip to Paris, Pacey has been avoiding her like a hawk. She hasn't seen him since the day at the airport where he had completely ignored her and took a ride home with his brother. Let's not forget about the fact that he had offered Jen a ride-along, too! That jerk!
Also, to her surprise, Joey has been hanging out with Jen lately. Ever since Jen had told her what happened during the date night auction, Joey was pleased to hear the truth from Jen that it was her who had to interfere on her date that night. Joey could tell that Jen was fearful that she would be mad but she wasn't. For the first time in her life, she felt the need to hug the blonde that was next to her. Joey has always thought of Jen as a threat. Not just because of Dawson but because of Pacey. She may seem foolish but she always thought that Pacey had secretly liked Jen. So, that's why she never thought of giving "Goldielocks" a chance at being her friend. Now that she knows for sure that Jen has no interest in Pacey, what-so-ever, she can finally breathe easy and try to come up with some way to convince Pacey that she is the one for him.
Joey can't also forget that Jen had mentioned that it was Dawson who told Pacey about their date. Now Joey knew why Pacey was so upset with her while they were in Paris. She was upset with Dawson for telling Pacey about their plan but knew that would be childish of her. Dawson didn't know that she wanted to be the one to tell him. Plus, she figured that Dawson may have thought that Pacey knew about it and let it slip. Since Pacey technically stands in as her date it was her responsibility to tell Pacey right then and there that she and Dawson had it all planned for them. But she didn't. Granted, she was going too but the timing was off. Now Pacey doesn't trust her and it's all her fault. She can't blame anyone else but her own. This is why she needs to find a way to make things right with Pacey again. She can't lose him - not like this.
Joey was sitting outside on the picnic table on the school grounds eating lunch with Jen who is sitting on the opposite side of her. Everyone was excited about this Miss Windjammer contest that is coming up. Joey finds it annoying as Jen couldn't stop raving about it.
"I think you should join, Joey," Jen said, excitedly.
Joey jumped out of her thoughts wondering if she heard correctly. "What!?"
"Hear me out, okay?" Jen rolled her eyes good-natured as she continued. "I think this would be a great opportunity to get your mind off things. Joey, you're smart, you're pretty, and you're talented."
"How can you possibly know that, Jen?" Joey asked, incredulous.
"Well ..." Jen said shyly, "I've heard you sing when you thought that no one else was around."
Joey closed her eyes as she was embarrassed.
"But don't be embarrassed!" Jen quickly jumps in. "You sing well. Damn good!" She added.
"I don't know, Jen. I don't think this contest is for me." Joey said, doubtful.
"Come on, Joey, I know you can do this! Have a little faith."
"Why don't you join, Jen? I'm sure you got some talent up your sleeve." For the life of her, she doesn't understand why it is so important to Jen for her to join this contest.
"Believe it or not I have no hidden talents," Jen deadpanned. "Besides, this could be a big break for you. To finally show people what you are made of. Trust me, I will coach you."
"I don't know ..." Joey trails off.
Maybe Jen is right. Maybe this is what I need to win Pacey back. I could sing a song that will show my true feelings for Pacey. Also, no one knows about my hidden talent except for Jen. Maybe now is the time to let my light shine.
"Okay, Jen, I'm in," Joey smiled.
"Yes!" Jen squealed with excitement.
Pacey couldn't believe that he had managed to avoid Joey this past couple of weeks. It kills him every time he sees her in the halls. He couldn't stop staring at her. His heart races every time he sees her. The beautiful smile she has; the aura that seems to shine all around her. It was enough to make him almost forget why he was upset with her in the first place. He was too ashamed to even approach her. So he did what he thought is best for both of them - run!
He didn't know what to say to her if he approaches her. He was afraid that it would lead to another argument. He felt that they needed space-time apart. He also needed time to clear his mind. He knew that Joey must have a reason why she didn't tell him about her planned date with Dawson. It's not like he and Joey were dating, anyway. But he'd thought that they were starting to be close enough to tell each other everything.
Pacey sighed as he walked to the side of the Leery's house. He would have used the front door but he didn't want to disrupt Miss. Leery, so he decided to use the ladder up to Dawson's room. Dawson usually keeps his window opened or unlocked anyway for all his guests.
When Pacey reached the top of the ladder, he saw that the window was opened and he peeked inside to see Dawson sitting upright on his bed with his arms folded watching television. Pacey smirked as he went in through the window.
"Pacey, you're here," Dawson smiled as he looked over at his friend.
"I'm here," Pacey replied, a bit awkwardly.
Dawson shut the television off as he focused on his friend. He had to admit, he was surprised to see his friend here. It has been quite a while since Pacey had come to visit. He figured that Pacey was probably too busy with his father about something or another; or that he was seeing someone and didn't even tell him. Either way, he is happy to see his friend here now.
"So what's up?" Dawson asked. Not sure what to do.
"Nothing just wanted to hang out and pay a friend a visit," Pacey flop down on the bed next to Dawson.
"You look like you need a drink," Dawson said. "Want a beer?"
"Sure," Pacey replied. "And while you're at it, add a little root to it."
Dawson smiled as he looked at his friend. "You got it," he smirked as he made his way to the door to get their drinks.
Minutes later, Dawson came back with two cans of root beer in his hands. He hands a can to Pacey as he retook his seat next to him. Both opened the can at the same time, clink their cans together before taking a sip, and made an "ah" sound as if they were out drinking at the bar.
"So, what have you been up to?" Pacey asked not looking at his friend but staring straight ahead.
"Nothing," Dawson sighed, doing the same as Pacey.
Both guys seemed to be bummed about something - or someone.
"Same here," Pacey nodded. "But seriously, is everything okay with you? Don't get me wrong but you look like hell."
Dawson chuckled as he took a sip of his root beer.
"I feel like hell," he replied.
"Is it your parents? Are they fighting again?"
"No, thank God. So far things have been quiet with them."
"Then what's the problem?" Pacey asked.
Dawson shrugged as he looked over at Pacey. "I told Joey that I have feelings for her."
Pacey paused with the can of root beer midway to his lips. "What did she say?" He heard himself asking.
Dawson steady Pacey for a moment, then replied, "She didn't say anything. I didn't give her a chance to reply. I told her that I would give her time to think about it."
Pacey slowly nodded as he let out a breath of air which he didn't realize he was holding. Damn! What is he going to do now?! Dawson had done a complete 180, and he has been nothing but a complete jackass towards her! How the hell is he going to compete with that!? There's got to be a way for him to stop this! He can't go on being mad at Joey for something so trivial.
"Anyways, enough about me," Dawson cut through Pacey's thoughts. "What's going on with you and Jen?" He wiggles his brows.
Pacey rolled his eyes as he places the can down on a nearby table.
"Nothing is going on with Jen and me. We are just friends."
"It sure didn't look like it back in Paris," Dawson pressed.
"I was just looking out for a friend," Pacey sighed.
"Looking out for a friend?" Dawson asked, incredulous. "What do you mean by that?"
"You know what I mean, Dawson," Pacey replied. "The way you've been treating her lately ... I just figured she needed someone to be by her side."
Dawson furrowed his brow as he looked at Pacey.
"Oh, I see. As opposed to the way you've been treating Joey?" Dawson asked, accusingly.
"What Joey and I have is some kind of understanding between us - as friends! It is nothing like the way you have been treating Jen!" Pacey was starting to get pissed off with Dawson's accusation.
"Besides," Pacey went on. "It should be no news to you that Joey and I have always been this way. We fight, we bicker, we get at each other's throats all the time! It's what we do!"
As Dawson listens to Pacey, his chest was tightening with pure jealousy over Pacey. He never once thought that he of all people would be jealous of Pacey Witter. As he listens to Pacey describe his relationship with Joey; Dawson came to realize how much chemistry they have. He and Joey never had what she and Pacey have. And that's what's starting to worry him. The thought that he could possibly lose Joey to Pacey...
"Fine. You're right," Dawson sighed, defeated. "I won't push the issue and bring it up again."
"Good," Pacey smiled. "Now, how about we play some video games," he beamed.
Jen is so excited that Joey has agreed to join the Miss Windjammer contest. She already knows just how she is going to help Joey prepare for the contest. She couldn't wait to get started!
School had ended for the day and she is currently at her locker packing her bag as she notices students giving her weird looks. It took her a moment to realize that she had been smiling like a damn idiot over this Windjammer thing. Fixing her face to hide the smile and excitement, Jen carried on with packing her bag.
Leaving the school, Jen happens to spot Pacey as he was heading out.
"Pacey! Wait up!" Jen yelled as she ran to catch up to him.
"Hey, Jen, what's up?" Pacey smiled.
"Well, I want to ask you a favor," Jen grin, mischievously.
"Uh oh. I know that look," said Pacey. "How much is it going to cost me?"
"Your life if you don't cooperate," Jen beamed.
Pacey looked at Jen with puzzlement.
"It's for a good cause," she went on. "It's not like I am asking you to do something illegal."
"I think I need to know what favor you are asking of me to do first before I agree to it," Pacey chided.
"Well, you know that there is this Miss Windjammer contest is coming up, right?" Jen bit her lip.
"Yeah?" Pacey said, wondering where she is going with this.
"Well," Jen squealed in a high-pitch tone. "I would like for you to go to the contest."
"Why?" Pacey said again wondering what she is up to.
"Because I will be participating in the contest," Jen answered.
"Really? You're going to join the contest?" Pacey asked, incredulous.
"No, silly, I will be helping someone who will be in the contest," she rolled her eyes good-natured.
"Oh."
Something still didn't add up. If she is not joining the contest then why does she want him to show up to that God-awful thing?
"So, you will come?" She asked, hopeful.
"Give me a good reason why I should come to this thing," Pacey grinned.
"Well, for starters like I said it will cost you your life if you don't go," Jen started. "But in all honesty, I think you are gonna want to come and see what I have in store for you."
Pacey looked at her with questioning eyes. Jen is up to something and sure enough, she has managed to pique his interest.
"I'll think about it. But tell me, who are you helping to join the contest?" He asked.
"Nah uh," she said, enjoying this. "You just gonna have to show up and see," she said smiling.
If Pacey didn't know any better, he'd say that Jen is trying to set him up. And if he's not careful, she might lead him into a trap.
oOo
Dawson spotted Joey just as he left the studio room. He was so happy to see her that he almost forgot the awkward tension they have. Pushing the awkward feeling aside, Dawson needed his best friend. He misses her. These past weeks have been awful and lonely without her. Plus, he also anticipates her answer to his feelings for her. He promised her that he will wait, but it seems that the wait is too long.
How long is she going to keep me waiting? He wondered.
Joey stopped in her tracks as she saw Dawson standing there zoned out in his thoughts. She smiled a little as she hasn't seen her friend in a while. Granted, it was her fault since she has been the one to avoid him. It's just that ever since his confession, she didn't know what to say. She has been trying to find ways to let him down gently but could not come up with anything. Plus, with this whole thing with Pacey, she has been pretty occupied with trying to win him back. So, the situation with Dawson, she just pretty much put that on the back burner.
Dawson finally came out of his train of thoughts as he noticed Joey staring. He couldn't help the huge smile plastered on his face as he walked up to her.
"Hey, you. Long time no see," he smirked.
"Yeah," Joey nodded, awkwardly.
"So, what you been up to?" Dawson asked as he fought the urge to brush her hair out of her face.
"Nothing much," Joey shifted as she brushes her hair behind her ear. "Just that Jen had kind of ... sort of talked me into joining the Miss Windjammer thing."
"She what!?" Dawson asked, astonished.
Joey didn't like his tone and had misinterpreted that his reaction meant that she wasn't good enough to join such a contest.
"What, you think I'm not cut out for it?" She glared.
"Whoa, Joey," Dawson raised his hands in mock surrender.
"I wasn't implying that you weren't good enough. I'm just surprised that you even consider joining since it's not like you," he tried to explain.
"Oh, so what you're saying is that you got me all figured out and I wouldn't be caught dead in this damn thing! Huh?"
Dawson raked his hand in his hair as he tries to figure out where it all went wrong?! He didn't mean to upset her and start a fight. It was not his intention. He has to think of something quick to fix this.
"Joey, that's not what I mean," he sighed.
"Then what did you mean, Dawson?!" Joey snapped, arms crossed.
Dawson took a moment to calm himself before he spoke another word.
"I'm waiting," Joey said, impatiently.
"It's just that you would always make fun of those sort of things," Dawson replied.
Seeing that he is struggling, Joey decides to cut him some slack. After all, it is true what he said. She would always joke about those sorts of things. To be honest, she never thought that she of all people would agree to join this thing.
"Fine. You're right. Normally I wouldn't be caught dead in this thing but I figured what the heck a girl gotta live a little and put herself out there."
"And out there you shall," Dawson smirked.
Joey smirked as well as they both started to head home.
oOo
Dawson thought a lot about what Joey said. It's not like he believes that Joey wasn't good enough to join the contest. Far from it! What worries him is the fact that Jen is involved with pushing Joey into joining the contest. He can't help but wonder that Jen might be on to something. Like she has some kind of ulterior motive. It's fine if Joey wants to join, he has no problem with that. He would support her all the way! He just hopes that Joey wanting to join doesn't have anything to do with whatever scheme Jen has up her sleeve.
Dawson went into the kitchen to get something to drink when he overheard his mom on the phone. What he had gathered on her end of the conversation is that she would be one of the judges for the Miss Windjammer contest! This is perfect!
He waited for his mom to finish her conversation on the phone.
Gail hung up the phone and looked over at her son suspiciously. Something is up with Dawson, she can feel it.
"Whatever it is that you want the answer is no," Gail said as she made her move into the living room.
Dawson follows suit as he said, "You don't even know what it is yet."
"I don't need to know what it is - the answer still remains," Gail turns to Dawson.
"It's about the Miss Windjammer contest!" Dawson blurted out.
Gail sighed as she put her hands on her hips. "What Dawson? What is it?" She feels so defeated.
Dawson smiled as he finally got his mom's attention.
"I overheard you mentioning that you are going to be one of the judges for the contest," Dawson started.
"Yeah, go on," Gail said as she made her way to the couch.
"Well, I just found out that Joey is going to be one of the contestants to the contest."
Gail looked up at Dawson in surprise. "Really! Joey is joining the contest?"
"Yeah," Dawson smiled. "And I was wondering since you are going to be a judge and all ... maybe you can put in a few favorites for Joey."
Gail sighed as she looked at her son.
"It's sweet of you to worry about your friend, Dawson. I love Joey as if she were my daughter but it wouldn't be fair of me to pick favorites just because I know her and have watched her grow up to become a beautiful young lady," Gail said.
"Besides, don't you think that Joey might want a fair judgment and not just because a friend had asked for a favor?" Gail pointed out to Dawson.
Dawson lowered his head as he realizes that his mom is telling the truth. He only thought about himself, wanting the girl he loves to win the contest. He only wanted what was best for Joey. He didn't think of how it may look. Asking for a favor is like saying that he doesn't believe that Joey has what it takes to become Miss Windjammer on her own. In his heart he knows that is not what he is saying but what about how it may look to her?
She wouldn't appreciate him going to his mom for a favor all cause he selfishly wants her to win.
He does want her to win! But fairly. He does believe in Joey and knows that she has what it takes. But some judgemental people in Capeside also like to gossip. If word got out that Josephine Potter has joined the Miss Windjammer contest, the people will make her a laughing stock. Everyone knows about her father's drug dealing bust and the fact that her father was cheating on her mother when her mother was sick and dying of cancer. Also, the fact that her sister Bessie is living with her black boyfriend whom she had recently had a baby with, and their not even married. So, Dawson had every reason to worry about Joey. If that made him selfish then so be it!
But again, what his mom said is right. He has to hold on to that hope and trust that Joey got what it takes to win over the audience on her terms.
Fair and square.
"You're right, mom. I'm sorry. I guess that answer still do remains," he joked.
Gail smiled at her son thinking how she could be so lucky to have him in her life.
Dawson had met up with Pacey after school and had agreed to hang out at the Pier by the lake. It had been quite some time since it was just the two of them hanging out fishing. They usually would come here with their fathers and make it a guy's day out. But things changed when Mr. Witter decided to call it quits and focus on being the sheriff in town, and his father had a dream of owning his seafood restaurant - which is still a work in progress. So, it has been just the two of them to keep guy's day out alive. That is until this past year, things have been crazy.
For starters, Jen moved in next door and he had been head over heels crazy about her. Just like every other guy, he had fallen victim to her charms. She was gorgeous and he had thought that they might have something in common. He never thought that she would be the girl who had slept around. That had been the sole purpose why his perfect image of her had disappeared. He was very devastated and disappointed in her. That is why, now, he realizes that Jen isn't the one. She never had been the one. It was Joey. His best friend. The one he's known since they were five. She is the one for him!
Then, to top that off, Dawson had found out that his mother was cheating on his father! That's what had been keeping him busy is dealing with his family problems. His parents are separated now but are possibly heading for divorce. Who knows? At this point, he just doesn't care anymore.
Right now, all he wants to do is focus on getting the girl he loves and hang out with his best friend Pacey. To hell with everything else in the world!
"What is it?" Pacey asked as he notices Dawson smiling.
"Nothing. I was just thinking how nice this is. You know?"
Pacey smiled. "Yeah. This is nice. We should do this more often. How come we stopped?"
Dawson shrugged. "Life, I guess. A lot has happened this past year."
Pacey sighed. "Yeah, tell me about it," he said as he thought about all the things that have happened to him. One big one is Joey.
"Oh yeah, Pacey!" Dawson started as an afterthought. "You are not going to believe who has decided to join the Miss Windjammer contest!"
"Who?" Pacey asked, a bit curious.
"Joey," Dawson smirked.
"What?" Pacey asked, disbelieving.
"I know, right!? I was just as shocked as you are. I ran into Joey the other day and she told me that Jen had talked her into joining. She convinces me that it is her decision ..."
Pacey's head was spinning. Of course, it makes sense why Jen wanted him to come to the contest. It was because she was helping Joey! He knew Jen was up to something. Being the good friend that she is, Jen just wanted to ease the tension that he and Joey have.
Pacey couldn't stop the smirk that was threatening to come out. Of course, he will be there. It's Joey! The love of his life. He has already forgiven her. It was stupid of him to be upset with something that is out of his control. It's not like he had confessed his feelings for her and she, in turn, hurt him on purpose. Besides, he could only blame himself. Dawson was smart enough to beat him to the punch.
What was he waiting for? A sign?
No. He knew what it was. It was fear. He is afraid to be rejected by someone who he cares about over someone with who he could never compete.
He doesn't know why everything had to be a competition between him and Dawson. It's always been that way. It's like he has to prove himself that he could be just as great as Dawson. Growing up, his family has always labeled him as the trouble one; incompetent; an embarrassment - a disgrace. So he started to believe that he is all of those things.
Then there is Dawson. The golden boy. The one who could do no wrong. The kind of guy that usually does gets the girl. So far it seems that he is getting the one girl that Pacey has his eyes on since they first met. It was Pacey who fell for Joey first. It was also him whom Joey shared her first kiss with. But Dawson was the one whom she had confided with. Not him.
He was the boy who had always irritated her. What right does he have to fall for someone like her? He watched how close Joey and Dawson have gotten growing up. He has seen first-hand how Joey was developing feelings for Dawson. Each time, it just reminds him how he is never good enough. The words his family labels him kept messing with his head. Seeing his best friend winning over the girl he loves. It was all beginning to be too much for him.
So he did the only thing he could do. Continue being what others expect him to be. He kept up with the bickering charade with Joey. Always competing with Dawson, knowing that Dawson secretly enjoys the fact that Pacey is competing with him.
But ever since Jen had moved in next door to Dawson, Pacey thought his luck was beginning to change. He noticed the way Dawson was looking at Jen when she was walking up towards them. He also noticed how jealous Joey was getting. Even though that part had hurt, he was also happy to know that Dawson was taking interest in someone else. Someone other than Joey. But things went downhill when Dawson found out about Jen's past. Knowing Dawson, he wants everything to be pure and perfect. But no-one is none of those things - including Dawson.
This is why it upset Pacey to see Dawson treat Jen the way he does. Jen is a great person and everyone has their faults; God knows he does! But that's what we do! We make mistakes and sometimes we learn from them.
The problem with Dawson is that he tends to think highly of people and he would sometimes put them on a pedestal. This is not a bad thing but it could lead to a huge disappointment once he realizes that not everyone is innocent or perfect he made them out to be.
Like Joey, for example, the only reason why Dawson is seeking her out is that he knows that Joey is still a virgin. Pacey is no idiot. He knew that Dawson had never thought of Joey romantically until he found out that Jen is not a virgin. Now all of a sudden, Jen is not the perfect girl he made her out to be but Joey is?
Yeah, there were times when Dawson had considered thinking of hooking up with Joey but that was only briefly. It was back when they were thirteen and Pacey had noticed that Joey was starting to grow some curves among other things. As always, Pacey would make fun of Joey about it. But he also notices that Dawson would never comment about it. So later when they were alone just the two of them without Joey - Pacey would egg Dawson on by trying to get him to admit that he has noticed Joey growing in some places. It took him a while until he finally got Dawson to admit that he had noticed and that he had thought about wanting to take their friendship a little further but thought it best not to because Joey was like a sister to him and he didn't want to jeopardize their friendship or complicate things.
That was the end of that until ... well now.
So here they are, two bros hanging out pondering over the girl they love.
oOo
Joey stopped over at Dawson's before heading over to Jen's. When she got there, she noticed that Dawson wasn't in his room. She heard Mrs. Leery downstairs and went to ask her where Dawson could be. Mrs. Leery told Joey that Dawson was out with Pacey. Hearing Pacey's name made her heart skip a beat. She misses him.
Mrs. Leery seem to notice something is wrong, so Joey quickly put on a brave face and smiled at Mrs. Leery letting her know that everyone is okay. She told Mrs. Leery that she would be next door over at Jen's getting ready for the Miss Windjammer contest.
"Oh, yes, Dawson had mentioned that you will be joining the contest. Congratulation!" Gail smiled.
"Thanks, Mrs. Leery," Joey smiled, shyly.
"Oh, and Joey!" Gail said, stopping Joey before leaving. "Don't be nervous. Just be you and I guarantee that everything will be fine."
Joey's heart warmed from Mrs. Leerys's words and she thanked her before leaving.
oOo
Jen couldn't sit still. She was too excited with helping Joey. She was treating Joey like a life-size Barbie doll. Joey didn't like it one bit. She has to do something to get Jen to tone it down some.
"Awe, but, Joey you got such great hair and skin," Jen whined.
"Thanks but it's not like I'm signing up for Miss America!"
"Fine," Jen gave in. "Let's start with what you are going to say when they ask you questions."
Joey shrugged as she waits for Jen to begin.
"In the future, what kind of example do you want to set for your children?" Jen asked posing as the host.
"I guess I would want them to treat others the way they want to be treated," Joey replied.
Jen seems to consider that answer as she nods, "Good. Let's move on. Who is your role model, inspiration and why?"
Joey shrugs as she thinks about this question. "I guess I don't have one," she states, honestly.
"I've always kind of depend on myself," she went on.
Jen sympathizes with her as she went on to her last question. "This is the most common question they will ask: Where do you see yourself in five years?"
Joey shrugs, "I don't know. In some romantic adventure or being in a safari in Africa."
"So basically somewhere that is not in Capeside?" Jen asked.
"Exactly," Joey agreed.
"Well, I guess that wraps up the questions," Jen said as she starts to put things away.
Joey watches Jen closely as she contemplates whether to talk to Jen about Pacey without having her know that it is him she is referring to.
Jen notices that Joey got something on her mind as she stopped doing what she was doing.
"Something on your mind, Joey?" Jen asked.
Joey snapped out of her thoughts as she looked at Jen for a moment.
"I've just been having all these feelings and I don't know what they mean," Joey started.
"Oh," Jen simply reply. She didn't think that Joey would open up to her this soon. She knows who Joey is referring too but to play it safe she asked, "Who's the lucky guy?"
Joey hesitated for a great while that it made Jen almost regret asking. Until Joey started to find her voice and began talking.
"It's like I was just going along with it and it just snuck up on me. And I tried to ignore it but then there were moments when you can't. Maybe I was reading it wrong. And to add insult to injury we are currently not on speaking terms. I know it sounds sappy ... but I thought just for a moment, someone needed me," Joey finished.
"Well, I'm sure he needs you, Joey," Jen said sincerely.
Joey snorted, disbelievingly as she looked at Jen. "That's sweet of you to say, Jen, but how do you know?"
"Because I know Pacey," Jen said with a pointed look, letting Joey know that she knows.
Joey stared on in shock as she realizes that Jen knew all along.
It's the night of the Miss Windjammer contest and the auditorium is packed with citizens of Capeside. The contestants were backstage getting ready to prepare for their performance. While all the judges were seated at their assigned seats waiting for the contest to begin.
Meanwhile backstage, Joey is a nervous wreck as Jen is trying her hardest to calm Joey down. Joey will be the third person to be up on stage to do her performance. Jen kept looking out at the auditorium from her position backstage. She looked around for a specific someone but her eyes landed on the one who constantly breaks her heart - Dawson. She watched as Dawson made his way towards his mother whom she is shocked to see is participating as one of the judges. Jen was about to head back to check up on Joey when she finally spotted Pacey walking into the auditorium. Jen smiled to herself as she realizes that her mission has been complete.
Pacey, feeling very nervous, spots an empty seat in the back roll. He walked over and took a seat as his heart couldn't stop racing. It has been over two weeks since he had seen Joey or even spoken to her. Those past two weeks had been nothing but hell. Tonight, he had come to give Joey his support; and if he is lucky maybe he will find a chance to speak to her alone. He had to apologize to her for his behavior. He wasn't too proud of himself over these past two weeks but he did need some time apart from her so he can clear his head. He realizes that it wasn't her fault that she lied to him. She didn't owe him anything. He was the one who didn't tell her how he feels. So, therefore, he is the only one that is to blame.
Dawson was just finished talking with his mother when he noticed Pacey sitting in the back roll. He smiled as he spotted his friend and made his way over to greet him.
"Fancy seeing you here," Dawson smirked as he took a seat next to Pacey.
Pacey shrugged, "Jen had invited me and I thought it would be nice to support a friend."
Dawson nodded as he looked at Pacey keenly.
Gail was preparing at her table when she spotted Mitch walking in - and he wasn't alone. Gail watched as Mitch's eyes had met hers. Gloria seems to notice the longing in Mitch's eyes as she clung to his arm trying to get Gail's attention. Oh, she got it alright as Gail's gaze was blazing on her giving Gloria a very pleasing death glare. Gloria smirked as she leads Mitch to their seats. Gail rolled her eyes at the women as she went back to face the stage and wait for the hostess to begin the contest.
oOo
Joey was pacing backstage as she is the next person to perform. She couldn't get rid of the nerves as Jen walked up to her and hand her a water bottle.
"Here, take this," Jen said as she thrust the bottle to Joey.
Joey took the bottle without hesitation as she quickly opened the cap and took a huge gulp of water.
"Better now," Jen deadpanned.
Joey nodded as she took another sip of her water. Tonight had to be perfect. The song that she is going to sing is dedicated to Pacey and what Jen has told her that he has indeed shown up tonight.
Joey stood still as she heard the hostess announce her name.
"Next up will be Josephine Potter as for her talent she will be singing a song 'Feels Like Home' by Chantal Kreviazuk," the hostess announced.
Joey took a deep breath and exhale as she walked out on stage. Glancing out in the audience she notices how packed the place is. Which in turn was not helping with her nerves. She walked up to the Mic as she finally spotted Pacey sitting in the back.
Meanwhile, Pacey stared at her in awe. She looks amazing, he thought to himself. He couldn't help but smile up at her when he noticed that she was looking his way.
Dawson noticed the look between them and began to worry about what it means. One thing is for sure, tonight he is going to confront her about his confession. He has to get an answer from her by tonight.
Joey took another deep breath as the music started to play.
(Start playing Feels Like Home by Chantal Kreviazuk).
Something in your eyes
Makes me want to lose myself
Makes me want to lose myself
In your arms
There's something in your voice
Makes my heart beat fast
Hope this feeling lasts
The rest of my life
If you knew how lonely my life has been
And how long I've been so alone
If you knew how I wanted someone to
come along
And change my life the way you've done
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where
I come from
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where
I belong
The audience was blown away by her voice as the two guys stared at her in shock. They knew that Joey had a nice voice but they didn't know that she can sing like that. Pacey smiled warmly at her as he continues to listen to her sing as Dawson had some sense of pride as he watched the women that he knows very much that he is in love with continue to sing.
A window breaks down a long dark street
And a siren wails in the night
But I'm alright 'cause I have you here
with me
And I can almost see through the dark
there is light
If you knew how much this moment
mean to me
And how long I've waited for your touch
If you knew how happy you are making me
I never thought that I'd love anyone so
much
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
It feels like I'm all the way back where
I come from
It feels like home to me
It feels like home to me
Feels like I'm all the way back where
I belong
Feels like I'm all the way back where
I belong
As soon as she finishes the song, the crowd erupts with cheers as she had a standing ovation. Joey couldn't believe her eyes as she looks out to the crowd. She finally spotted Mrs. Leery up front cheering for her as she held two thumbs up at her. Jen was standing backstage as she jumps up and down with glee. Before leaving the stage, Joey took one last look at Pacey and happy to see that he was rotting her name as he proudly cheers for her. At that moment, she knew that everything between them is alright and they are back to being as they were.
Joey walked up to Jen smiling from ear to ear as they both hugged and jumps for joy at the same time. Tonight had felt like she had won a lottery even if she didn't win the contest. What matters most is that she had won Pacey back.
oOo
It was time to announce the winners of this year's Miss Windjammer contest. To Joey's surprise, she had won first place and is now the new face of being the next Miss Windjammer in Capeside. Tonight was full of surprises for her but the night is still young as soon there was going to be chaos approach.
Gail had the privilege to place the sparkling diamond silver tiara on top of Joey's head as she whispered to her, "Congratulations, I've voted for you!"
Joey smiled at her as she watched her walk past.
The crowd went wild as she stood on stage holding a banquet of flowers in her arm.
Afterward, Joey was busy getting interviewed as Gail was cleaning up her things from the table. She stopped short when she heard a familiar voice call out to her. Their eyes met and it suddenly seems like they were the only two in the crowded room. Gail couldn't understand how she could be so stupid as to cheat on this gorgeous man. She admits that she messed up. Big time. But she never stopped loving him. Not even once. What she did with Bob is no excuse. It's just that Bob was always there and he paid attention to her by showing interest and making her feel good.
But there was no love there. Not even close. It was nothing but a fling. Something to take the edge off. Although Mitch was good in that department she was greedy. She wanted more.
Now here is the man who she had born his child and shared twenty years of marriage. And he is no longer hers but now belongs to another.
Mitch couldn't keep his eyes off of her all night. The moment he first spotted her, his heart skipped a beat. He wanted to go to her and wrap her in his arms as he tells her 'to hell with it, he forgives her; she belongs to him!' But then Gloria had her thought in mind as she drew close to him and clung her arm over his.
He wanted to stop this. He wanted to tell Gail that Gloria was just an act to get her to sign the divorce paper. But now he realizes that he doesn't want a divorce anymore. He tried to not love her anymore but he can't. Gail is everything to him. He realizes that he cannot love anyone else but Gail.
Gail watched as Mitch slowly made his way towards her. She stood frozen not knowing what to do.
He stopped in front of her, standing dangerously close.
They kept looking at each other, eyes never wavering.
"You look good," Mitch muttered softly.
Gail barely heard what he said amongst the crowd of people but judging the way he is looking at her says it all.
"Gail ... I just want to tell you-" he went on but was rudely interrupted.
"Mitch! There you are, sweetie! I've been looking all over for you," Gloria glared at Gail.
When Mitch first went to her about helping him to end his marriage, she wasn't sure at first if it was the right thing to do. She felt uncomfortable when Mitch called her to come to their house to put on a show. But the more she had spent time with Mitch and got to know him - the more she realized that she was starting to fall in love with him. She knew she shouldn't start opening that can of worms especially since he still has feelings for his wife, but she couldn't help how attractive and nice this man is. She even starting to thank Gail for ruining her marriage, now that she could have a chance to win him over.
"Looks like your plus one is here," Gail averted her eyes from Mitch.
Gloria gave Gail a fake smile as she wraps herself onto Mitch. It took all of Gail's well power to not bitch slap that woman.
"Gloria, I was in the middle of something," Mitch started.
"Oh, sweetie, you don't have to tell her that we're moving in together," Gloria lied, trying to stick it up to Gail.
"You're what!?" Gail peeved.
Mitch shook his head as Gloria pulled him back so she can stand in front of him.
"I said that we are moving in together," Gloria pronounces every word as if she were talking to a kindergarten.
Gail snickered as her anger was blazing. This is not what she had pictured her night would end. For a moment she thought that Mitch may want her back. But she guesses she was wrong.
"So what? We're separated and you just couldn't wait to start moving in with her!" Gail was shaking as tears were threatening to come out.
"Gail, listen -" Mitch tried, again.
"Enough! I get it, you moved on!" Gail yelled.
"It's not like that!" Mitch tried to explain.
"Save it! I don't want to hear anymore," Gail move to leave.
Gloria acted quickly as she notices Gail about to leave. She turns to Mitch and started to kiss him passionately on the lips. Mitch was too stunned to stop her.
Gail stood broken as she watched the two of them. Tears streaming down her eyes.
"I'm going to leave you two alone," she cried as she stormed off.
(Start playing Fallen by Sarah McLachlan).
"Gail, wait!" Mitch tried to get her attention.
He watched hopelessly as the woman he loves walk away from him - yet again. Turning to Gloria, he was beyond pissed.
"Why the hell did you do that!? I wanted to end this charade! I wanted to tell her that I love her and I forgive her! Why the hell did you have to lie and say we are moving in together!?" Mitch vented out his anger.
"I'm sorry," Gloria said, fear in her eyes.
Mitch scoffed as he looked at her. "And then you dared to kiss me in front of her! We're done. I don't need you anymore!"
Like Gail, he stormed off leaving Gloria behind and from her life...
Meanwhile, Dawson made his way through the crowd as he spotted Joey far off taking pictures. He smiled to himself as he looked at her with dreamy eyes. On his way towards her, he was suddenly stopped by Jen.
"Dawson, there's something that I want to say-"
"Not now, Jen!" Dawson brushed her off as he moved past her and continue to reach Joey.
Jen turns back to face Dawson as she watches him hopelessly. She sighs to herself as she realizes that she is not going to get through to him tonight.
Pacey waved through the crowd as he tries to spot Joey. He finally saw her as she was just finishing with her pictures. Pacey's heart began to race again as he stares at her. She is so beautiful, like a Goddess, he thought.
Just when he was about to walk up to her - he abruptly stopped at what he saw.
Dawson came running up to Joey from behind as he wraps his arms around her giving her a back hug. Joey was shocked as she froze from her spot. Not knowing what to do, she just stood there as she waits.
Pacey, watching the scene from where he is standing, sighs to himself as he accepts defeat. He then turns his back on them and began to leave as he decides to give them privacy.
Joey was about to move from Dawson's arms until he stopped her from his words.
"Please, don't move," he begged. "Let's just stay like this for a moment."
Joey heard the desperation in his voice and decided to stay still.
Dawson inhales deeply as he held her tightly towards him.
"I know I said that I will give you some time," he began. "But, Jo, I don't think I can wait any longer. I need to know if you feel the same way that I do."
He paused for a moment.
"Please, Jo. Just please like me," he begged.
He hates to beg her but he was starting to get scared of losing her.
Joey sighed as she moves to face Dawson. She looked into his eyes and saw that he look in complete despair.
"Why are you like this, Dawson? You're breaking my heart," Joey replied.
"I'm sorry for breaking your heart," Dawson responded. "Joey, trust me this is not my intention."
"I can't believe you are apologizing right now," she says.
She feels it should be her to apologize to him. Especially now that she is about to say to him.
"But, Dawson ... I'm gonna have to be honest with you," she paused for a beat. "I'm flattered that you like me. And I like you too, Dawson. I do! But-"
"But ..." Dawson interrupted, knowing that she is going to turn him down.
"But ..." she continues, fixing her eyes on him. "I feel that maybe we should just focus on being friends," she finished.
Dawson was hurt by her words. She had just literally friend-zoned him. But he would not give up hope. Later down the line, she will realize that he is the one for her. She is worth waiting and fighting for.
"Okay," he agreed as he musters up his courage to smile at her. To make her see that he is okay.
Joey sighed with relief as she hugged him.
oOo
Joey made it to the Witters' house as she knocked on the door. She was very grateful when she saw that it is Pacey who had opened the door. Just the person she's wanted to see all night.
They smiled at each other as soon as he stood at the doorway.
"Want to come in?" He offered.
"I rather if we could stay out here," she gestured the beautiful night air.
Pacey agreed as he stepped out of the doorway to join her. They stood silent for a moment as they just enjoy being in each other's company. It's been over two weeks since they've seen each other. It's nice to finally be back to where things were like before.
Before the misunderstandings.
Pacey was the first to break the silence.
"Joey, I'm sorry for the way that I've behaved," he started. "You don't deserve that and I want you to know that it's not your fault. I was the one with the problem and I took it out on you. For that, I am truly sorry."
Joey shook her head as she looked at him.
"You don't need to be sorry, Pace."
He smiled at hearing her call him 'Pace.' He loves it when she calls him that. He even loves the way she says it.
"In truth we both did wrong. But let's not let it dictate our friendship. You are more important to me than to let our friendship be ruined. Pacey ... I love you. I love our friendship. I love what we have to let some stupid fight come in the way between us," Joey admitted.
Pacey looked at her in awe. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. Granted, she told him that she loves him - but only in a friendly way. She may not love him the way he does her but he will accept it in any way he can.
"I love you too, Potter. And, God, I've missed you!" He admitted.
Joey smiled up at him as she said, "I've missed you too, Pace."
Pacey placed his hand at the top of her head where the tiara was placed, as he began to stroke her hair as an act of endearment.
AN: Well I've finally finished this chapter. The last chapter will be coming! Just a fair warning, I don't know if any of you are a fan of Smallville, for the part of Joey and Jen having a conversation about Pacey; I used the same conversation from Smallville Season 8 on Bride episode. It's the part where Lois and Oliver were talking about Clark. I love that scene and I just had to use it for Joey talking to Jen about Pacey. It was fitting for me! I hope you guys enjoyed it either way.
Character Insight:
Dawson/Joey: I kind of put the continuation from the last chapter up in here to start off what happens after Dawson's confession to Joey. As you can see I had him wait for a while for Joey to basically tell him that she just wants to be friends. Of course, Dawson is hurt by this but he is not giving up on Joey. Not by a long shot!
Dawson/Pacey: I actually enjoy the fact that I was able to write these two as just bros hanging out. I realize that I haven't really written anything concerning these two characters together. Just showing them being friends hanging out just the two of them. I really enjoyed writing their scenes. It was a nice change. Also, get more in dept with their inner thoughts and feelings.
Joey/Jen: Just like Pacey and Dawson, I did enjoy writing these two characters, as well. They are bonding perfectly well and I wanted to finally get to the point when Jen lets Joey know that she knows that Joey has feelings for Pacey. As you know this is a drama, I don't want to give anything away, it is very important to remember that Jen is all for Pacey and Joey. That is all I am going to say.
Pacey/Joey: These two finally made up but will it last? Joey finally told Pacey that she loves him but played it safe by saying it in a friendly manner. Which leads Pacey to believe that she doesn't love him in the same way that he loves her. Will these two ever gonna tell each other how they really feel?
Next Final Chapter: Episode 13 Decisions
- Pacey takes Joey to visit her father in prison.
- Dawson and Jen have an honest talk.
- Everyone makes up their minds about their decisions they are going to take.
- Will Pacey finally tells Joey how he feels, or does Dawson still have a chance?
Find out next time in the Season Finally!
