Spirit Caller
Chapter Nine

Win Some and Lose Some
Connar sighed as she finally got released from her phone call with her uncle.
I sure am off to a rocky start...
she thought to herself and sighed as she pressed the End Call button.
"What!? You had to take a failing grade!?" Syrus exclaimed as Connar explained the situation to him.
"Not a failing grade." she said," Just an incomplete."
"But...what's the difference?"
"Connar will still receive credit having taken the written exam." Bastion explained,"But because she forgot her deck, she will not receive credit for the field exam." he said,"Since she passed her written exam however, while the grade may not be pretty...she won't fail."
"Perhaps it's best I forgot it." she said softly, both of her classmates gave her a puzzled expression.
"I had a strange dream involving duel monsters and...I dunno." she sighed,"Maybe it's just because I'm stressing myself out...I probably wouldn't have been able to duel well under such condition anyway."
Thank goodness for high marks on the written exam though!
she thought to herself.
If I didn't have book smarts there's no way I would pass.
She whimpered.
Still...I've got to do better than that...or I'll just make everyone look bad.
She sighed.
"Oh I see." said Syrus,"I wish I could be lucky enough not to duel and still be okay." he mumbled,"But I didn't do so well on the written exam so I need all the help I can get."
"I believe in you, SyRy." Connar smiled,"You'll be fine."
But all of the real action was already taking place on the duel field, with the duel between Chazz Princeton and Jaden Yuki.
Normally a Slifer student would never be forced to duel an Obelisk Blue during one of these field exams.
She thought to herself.
But it seemed someone pulled some strings... and on top of that, these are all cards I have never seen in Princeton's deck before...
Her eyes narrowed as she watched on.
This is too suspicious...
But she dare not to say anything for fear of giving away more than she intends. Best for her to keep quiet, like she doesn't know anything at all.
The duel was long and intense. But it ultimately ended in Chazz's defeat.
Connar gasped at such a sight.
To think...that Princeton...lost.
The wind blew cooler later that night. Connar made her way to the beach. It was where she would usually go to think. However, she soon found that she was not there alone.
"Ah...Princeton...!" She was surprised to see him there. Gazing off over the sea with his hair and coat tails fluttering in the sea breeze.
He darted his eyes in her direction, taking in her surprise.
"Connar..." he spat her name, if only to acknowledge her existence once before ignoring her presence. She blinked and swallowed hard, but after taking in a deep breath she approached the raven haired male, and placed her self perfectly aligned by his side.
"...So..." he began,"...Did you come to laugh at me too?
"Why would I do that, Princeton?" she asked softly,"I thought you dueled really well..."
"It wasn't good enough!" he grumped and kicked the sand into the sea like an angry child throwing a temper tantrum, "That Slacker...will regret making a fool of Chazz Princeton!" He growled, panting softly.
Connar wanted to comfort him, but there was no doubt any word from her would mean nothing to him. She simply sighed and stood beside him, facing the sea, watching the waves slowly come in and recede.
"I noticed you didn't step onto the field today..." he mumbled in an attempt to make conversation. He seemed to have calmed himself down a little.
"Yeah that...uh..." she blushed awkwardly," I forgot my deck in the dorm...I paid for it indeed."
"Hmph, go figure." Chazz scoffed,"Hanging out with slackers is turning you into one."
"That's not- It's more complicated than that."
"Oh really? Enlighten me!"
She silenced herself. She didn't even know how to begin let alone how it would come across to someone like Chazz Princeton, who most likely had no interest anyway.
"Forget it!" he scoffed and began storming off,"And I don't need your pity, either."
"Pity?" Connar sighed as she watched him walk away. she clenched her chest while she watched him. She could feel the pressure he was under, but it wasn't her place to touch on it.
He has been acting so hectic lately...
Dueling Jaden at Midnight...?
Using rare cards that no one could obtain earlier because they were bought out...
They were all in Princeton's deck!
She sighed.
How did you get those cards, Princeton?
Why did you have them!?
I have never seen you use anything like them in your deck before...
She thought to herself.
"Princeton...I've always admired you." she said softly,"You were strong and you only relied on yourself and your own abilities. It made you popular in Duel Prep School..." As she watched him from a distance, she could see his struggle through his eyes, unaware that he was being watched by her. He seemed to have a lot on his mind, and it was clearly affecting him mentally.
Princeton...
She sighed watching him.
What's going on with you?
"What's going on with you Chazz!?" said Jagger, "This is twice you've lost to that slifer joke!"
"Twice!?"
Chazz sat up late that night, having received an unwanted phone call from his older brothers, Slade and Jagger.
"Damn right, twice!" said Slade,"You think we don't know about your little midnight duel?"
"But I didn't lose that duel!"
"Well you didn't win it either!" said Jagger,"Remember Chazz, we have a plan in motion! World Domination is at our fingertips!" he exclaimed,"And for our plan to succeed, That Kaiba girl needs to be taken out of the picture! We are counting on you for that."
"I. Get. It!" Chazz grumbled, gritting his teeth as he stood and stormed around in frustration.
"Well then. Get. TO. It!" Slade huffed.
"I'm working on it!" said Chazz.
"Well then work HARDER Chazz!" said Jagger,"You have always been the slacker of this family!" he huffed,"Your brother and I are doing our part, it's high time you start doing yours" he barked his last command,"Take care of that girl Chazz...permanently if you have to, or We will!"
CLICK
Chazz stood in the darkness of his room, with the sound of the dial tone ringing in his ears.
Permanently?
He asked himself.
What do they mean by that...?
he clenched his fists and gritted his teeth.
If you can just do your job, Chazz, we won't have to find out.
He glared over at his reflection in the mirror and clenched his teeth. He balled his gloved hand into a fist, ready to punch it to shatters, but a few old photos caught his attention. Class Photos from Duel Prep School. He and Connar were together in a few of them. Caught in a couple of candid shots. The two of them used to duel together often during their lunch hour. There was a framed photo he had standing on his wardrobe and he picked it up in his hands and held his gaze on it for a while. They stood together holding v signs and laughing together. A slight smile curled on his lips at the memories.
"Congratulations, Princeton! You dueled really well."
She was always the first one to praise him, and she never missed a duel he played.
"But of course, Connie~ The Chazz doesn't lose!" He would grin, feeling quite a bit of pride in himself," Now let's just see you do the same"
"Hmph, well I lost this time..." he grumbled to himself,"...And of course she was watching, and saw it herself."
He sighed and placed the photo face down.
"Pull yourself together, Chazz!" he grumbled,"Stick to the plan, and do. Your. Job!"
