Caroline stretched out arms in frustration as she continued to vent about the previous night's festivities. All three girls were sitting in Bonnie and Caroline's apartment as the date was fully assessed and dissected, as only girls could do.
"I mean it could be worse, Care." Bonnie smiled, attempting to ease her best friend.
"Really Bonnie? How so?" Caroline responded, her eyes narrowing in accusation.
Bonnie chewed her lip in thought for a moment before standing up, "I'm going to get more wine."
Katherine chuckled as Caroline groaned, "Ugh I can't even drown my sorrows in alcohol."
"I couldn't live without my chardonnay. Number one reason to use a condom." Katherine teased before Caroline sent her a deathly glare.
"Okay, mama bear, you have got to get a grip. So what if you had a sucky date. Been there, done that." Katherine shrugged.
"You should have seen his face when he realized I was married to that Mikaelson." Caroline buried her head in her hands.
"Yeah, hearing you were married to one of the biggest tycoons in the world must have been pretty threatening." Katherine agreed.
"How could he not know about you and Klaus? Doesn't he read People?" Bonnie joked as she came back into the room with a new bottle of wine.
"At least you didn't tell him you were pregnant." Katherine added.
"Klaus and I agreed to keep it under wraps until we know how to announce it. But even if I could tell Tyler I'm not sure there would be any point. He said it was probably best if we kept the relationship professional until I have moved on from my divorce. But he did say he'd call next time he was in town." Caroline replied.
"He sounds like a really good guy." Bonnie said.
"A really boring guy you mean. The whole point of the date was to have some fun." Katherine chimed.
"Whatever the point was it just showed me how messy my life is right now. This is not how I imagined bringing a child into the world. Divorced and alone." Caroline sighed.
"Hey you're not alone!" Her two friends protested.
"Yeah you're right actually, if anything I have too many people involved." Caroline replied.
"Rebekah still calling?" Katherine smirked.
"On the hour, every hour. She can't wait until we know the sex so she can start properly planning everything. Stefan says his whole apartment is full with either baby or wedding stuff." Caroline chuckled recalling her friend's horrified tone when she spoke to him on the phone earlier that day.
"When do you have to go to the doctor's again?" Bonnie inquired, "I'm sure I can get out of work early and come with you."
"Tomorrow. My doctor said I just needed to pick up the rest of my pre-natal vitamins and some reading she wants me to go over about birthing plans or something." She paused for a moment before casually adding, "Klaus kind of already said he'd come."
"He is the father." Katherine added.
Bonnie's eyes narrowed slightly, "As long as he shows up."
"Bonnie!" Katherine called out.
"What? I'm sorry, Care, but how many times did he bail last minute on things with you when you were married? How many times were you left sitting in restaurants alone or flying solo at events he had organized for you two to go to?" Bonnie asked, "I'm not trying to be cruel, I just want you to be careful."
Caroline nodded, although her stomach churned slightly at her friend's words, "I know, B, but as Katherine said, he's the father and he seems to want to make this work for the baby."
The girls landline began to ring out loudly, Caroline grabbed the phone off the table, "Hello?"
"Oh Caroline thank god you answered! I know my hen party is next weekend but I was thinking we could go to Babies's R Us on the Friday to pick a crib and then I still will have plenty of time to finalize details for the party on Saturday?" Rebekah spoke a mile a minute.
"I don't know Bekah, I'm not even three months along, and it seems a bit soon to buy a crib." Caroline replied hesitantly.
She could hear the other girl's frown through the phone and her reply came with a sour tone, "Fine we can wait another two weeks or so until you're at three months. Happy?"
Caroline rolled her eyes, "Yes Rebekah that's perfect."
"Fantastic. Also I've sent Nik some sample nursery ideas and he just said whatever you wanted would be fine. But I assume I'm decorating two different baby rooms right? One at Nik's place and one at yours?" Rebekah asked without hesitation. She truly had no boundaries. Something Caroline loved and loathed about her former sister-in-law.
At the mention of the baby's future living situation Caroline suddenly needed to get off the phone, "Look Bekah I have the doctor's appointment tomorrow so I need to do some work now to make up for it."
Rebekah sighed, "That's alright. I'II call over tomorrow to see how it went."
"Oh no Rebek-" Caroline attempted to respond before the dial tone began to ring in her ear, indicating Rebekah had hung up.
"Well?" Katherine said with a gleaming smile, delighted Rebekah was no longer on her case about having kids, her focus was now solely on Caroline.
"I think I'm gonna need a pint of ice-cream right now."

The next morning Caroline found herself in what could only be described as an increasingly awkward situation.
There she sat with Klaus in the waiting room of her new OB/GYN. Surrounding them were pregnant women with more children running around the doctor's office, clearly eager to go play outside rather than be stuck in some stuffy office.
Caroline couldn't help but laugh at Klaus's outraged expression as a woman began to open her top to breastfeed her child.
"That's it. I'm waiting in the car." He moved to stand up.
"Sit down." She sent him one withering glare, which was enough to tell him leaving wasn't an option.
"This place is like bedlam." He spoke in confusion, looking around the room at screaming infants and tired mothers.
"They're children Klaus, this is what they do."
"Finn's kids are never like this." He replied.
Caroline turned to him, "Klaus the only time you see them is at the holidays when they are loaded up on Santa presents and Christmas cookies, of course they're in a good mood then." Hopeless she muttered to herself with a roll of her eyes.
Klaus turned to glare at her but was interrupted by the presence of the doctor, "Caroline?" The doctor called out.
Caroline stood, walking through the waiting room and down the hall to the doctor's office, she could feel Klaus not far behind.
Feeling tired she decided to sit on the exam table as the doctor began to speak.
"Okay Caroline your last visit only really confirmed the pregnancy but today I'm going to be giving you some vitamins and supplements that you're going to need to take exactly as the prescription states." The doctor continued to talk for the next few minutes as Caroline eagerly took down what she was saying on a small notepad. Klaus smiled seeing her perfectionist streak was even being used now.
"Okay well that's really it for now." The doctor looked through her papers once more, "Oh I see you're nearly ten weeks now. Would you like to do an ultrasound today? We might be able to see something." The doctor smiled warmly.
"An ultrasound? Today?" Klaus asked and Caroline could see the shock and anxiety etched across his face.
"Klaus it's an ultrasound. I'm not going into labor relax."
The doctor chuckled and left the room for Caroline to change into a hospital gown as Klaus pouted from across the room.
"Turn around." She spoke to him as she moved to take her top off.
Klaus scoffed, "We were married for 7 years Caroline."
"Turn. Around."
Klaus rolled his eyes before turning to face the wall covered in diagrams, "I hate this place." He mumbled to himself.
"Hmm?" Caroline said as she changed.
Klaus smirked, remembering a much more delightful topic they could discuss, "I heard things with Tyler went swimmingly."
"You don't have to sound so darn right happy about it." She huffed as she slipped the gown over her head and sat back down on the table.
Hearing her movements he turned around walking towards her.
"Wait how do you even know that?" She asked suspiciously.
"It seems Bonnie and Kol spend more time talking than actually doing work these days." Klaus frowned, "Something I should really talk to him about."
The doctor re-entered the room, sitting down beside Caroline as she organized the equipment and turned on the machine.
"It's not really any of your business anyways." Caroline whispered to him.
"It's not?" He asked.
"No, I don't ask you about who you're dating." She replied.
"I'm not dating anyone." He whispered back.
"Ugh AS IF!" Caroline practically shouted, causing the doctor and Klaus to look to her in surprise.
"Pregnancy hormones, sorry." Caroline said with a small smile.
The doctor smiled in amusement at the two of them as she moved the machine around for them to see.
"So the baby is only about ten weeks so it's very small as you can imagine but there he or she is." The doctor pointed to a small spot on the monitor.
"Oh my god." Caroline felt her eyes begin to fill with tears of happiness. She couldn't believe that was her baby.
"Fuck." Klaus stated, his eyes transfixed on the screen.
"Klaus!" Caroline reprimanded.
The doctor laughed once again, "You're not the first person to react this way Mr. Mikaelson. A lot of people don't feel like it's actually real and happening until they see their child in an ultrasound."
Caroline smiled again as she noticed Klaus swallow as the doctor spoke, she could see how nervous he was but there was a excitement in his eyes that nobody could deny.

Caroline walked into her building's elevator. After the excitement of the ultrasound she decided she was too tired to go back to the office so Klaus had insisted on bringing her back to her apartment.
"You really don't have to walk me to my front door. It's not like this is a first date." She chuckled awkwardly.
Klaus had always been protective of her; since they first met it had always been like that. But since leaving the doctor's office a half an hour ago she could feel that instinct kick up a notch, something she didn't think was possible.
"It's no bother." He replied as the elevator began to shake its way up. He was about to comment on the buildings safety hazard before Caroline sent him a look that said don't go there.
Klaus began to grin as a memory flooded his mind, "Do you remember our actual first date?"
Caroline groaned with a smile, "Oh God I try to forget it. You took me to that fancy French restaurant and I was too nervous to tell you I spoke no French so I ended up ordering a whole pigeon." She shook her head in embarrassment.
"I'll admit I thought it was a strange order when you said it." Klaus chuckled, "I think we made it half way to the taxi before you started to throw up."
Caroline put a hand to her face laughing, "There was something wrong with the sauce too I swear. Not exactly my finest hour though." She turned her face to him still smiling at the memory, "God who would have thought then that we would end up having a baby together." She joked.
"I did." He answered without hesitation, meeting her eyes in the badly lit elevator, "Granted I imagined the circumstances a bit different but I always knew I would only ever do those things with you."
"Even when I threw up a pigeon on Central Park West?" She smiled.
"Even then. You know I only took you there because of something Katherine said to me. So blame her." He replied.
"What?" Caroline asked in confusion. Katherine knew Klaus before she did but she never knew they had discussed her back then together.
"After we met, I asked her about you and one of the things she said was that you were obsessed with Paris even though you've never been. And because I didn't want to scare you off by taking you to Paris on a first date I settled for the best French food in the city." He met her eyes once again as he finished and saw how silent she had become.
"I never knew that." She stated quietly as the elevator doors drew open at her floor.
"Well now you do."
Caroline was at lost for words when the sound of high heels approached the elevator.
"Caroline! There you are! I've been waiting for fifteen minutes outside your apartment. Don't you check your phone? Oh Nik, didn't see you there." Rebekah said.
Finally regaining her ability to speak she replied, "Sorry I turned my phone off for the appointment. Klaus was just dropping me home." She stated unnecessarily.
Rebekah looked confused for a moment, "Yes I assumed as much. Well come along now we have hen party plans to go over and we have to talk about how you're going to baby proof this danger zone you call an apartment." She said, pulling Caroline out of the elevator.
"Bye Nik!" She called as the doors began to close.
Caroline looked back into the elevator giving Klaus a small apologetic smile, which he readily returned. As soon as the doors closed his smile dropped and his heart contracted, feeling the longing and pain spread through his body all at once. Maybe he had let her get away once but he knew he couldn't let it happen again.
