Klaus opened the door to his apartment, throwing his briefcase and coat down on a nearby chair as he made his way to the bedroom.

"Thank god you're home. I was afraid you'd be late after your meeting." Caroline said, not bothering to look up as she shrugged out of her suit jacket.

"Late for what?" He ventured as he went to change his shirt.

"Are you serious?" Caroline briefly paused, her fingers lingering on the buttons of her shirt, "Your mother's gala is tonight. We have to be at the MET in less than an hour. I rushed home for it."

Klaus closed his eyes for a moment, remembering the stupid gala for birds or lost paintings or something equally trivial. Pulling on a fresh shirt he turned to his wife who was still staring at him expectantly.

Seeing the words that were about to come out of his mouth Caroline raised her hand, "No no no. You are not bailing Niklaus. You are not leaving me with your family by myself one more time!"

"Technically they're your family too. And I don't know what you want me to do about it. I have a meeting in an hour with Yamasari, I can't cancel, he flies back home tonight." Klaus walked out of the bedroom with Caroline close on his heels.

"It's been like this for months now Klaus and I'm so sick of it." Her voice sounded broken.

"Jesus Caroline, it's just a bloody function my mother is throwing, there will be plenty more. This is work, this is the most important thing in my life right now." He said angrily.

Caroline gaped, "Did you just hear what you said? The most important thing in your life? Seriously?!"

Klaus pinched the bridge of his nose in frustration, "You know what I mean."

Caroline laughed bitterly, "I really don't Klaus. Please enlighten me."

"I'm not doing this with you. All you want is a fight and I'm not giving it to you." He pulled on his suit jacket.

"I don't want a fight, but I want you to fight. Fight for us. Just for once act like you give a damn about this marriage, please." Caroline admonished.

"Don't be absurd. We're just going through a rough patch. There's no need for dramatics." Klaus looked at her, his voice beginning to sound more frenzied than his words.

"A year isn't a rough patch. I feel like we're not a team anymore. We barely spend any time together."

Klaus sighed, turning around and walking up to her, "We'll go to our apartment in L.A this weekend, just the two of us okay?" He gently cupped her face, placing a hesitant kiss on her lips. An action that used to be second nature now was something he questioned. Always uncertain of her reaction or whether she even wanted him kissing her.

Klaus pulled away, grabbing his briefcase and walking towards the front door of their apartment.

"No." Caroline stated, her hands shaking as she spoke.

Klaus turned his head to her, his forehead wrinkled in confusion.

"If you leave this apartment now, we're over." She said, her eyes filling with tears but she attempted to keep her voice steady.

Klaus's mouth opened for a moment, unable to respond to her ultimatum. His heart screamed at him to stay, to do anything to make her never say those words again. But his mind didn't like being threatened. She had to get how important this meeting was, she would understand in the morning, when she was rested and everything was good again.

Klaus gave her one last look before walking out the door. The soft click of the lock echoed around the loft.

Caroline felt her insides crumble; her heart lurched as tears streamed down her face. She let herself feel the pain and sadness for a few minutes before an uncontrollable fury took over.

"Asshole!" She screamed, throwing her shoe at the heavy oak door.

"Caroline! Caroline, wake up!"

Caroline opened her eyes slowly, seeing Katherine standing above her.

"Hey Sleepy, Rebekah will lose it if you don't finish getting ready for this bachelorette party." Katherine said in uncharacteristically sweet voice.

Caroline yawned before sitting up in her bed. She must have fallen asleep getting ready. She frowned, remembering what she had been dreaming of, the night her marriage truly ended.

"Bad dream?" Katherine guessed, "You were tossing and turning when I came in."

"Yeah something like that." She shrugged.

Katherine raised a slender eyebrow at her to elaborate further.

"Klaus." She finally said.

"I thought things were good between you two now."

"They are." Caroline sighed. Things had been good between them, since the scan the previous week they had been making serious plans for their child and trying to figure out how to make everything work. "It was just a dream." She shook her head at Katherine, who quickly dropped the subject.

"Oh there you two are." Rebekah said, coming into Caroline's room.

"Wow Bekah you look amazing." Caroline smiled at the bride-to-be who was wearing a tight yellow dress, a perfect match to the large canary yellow diamond sparkling away on her left hand.

Rebekah smiled, "Yes well it is my last night of freedom or however you Americans put it."

"You know you're marrying an American right? No more hick jokes allowed." Caroline teased.

"Can we just go already?" Rebekah huffed before leaving the room.

"That girl is a child, I cannot believe she is getting married." Katherine laughed as Caroline went to put her heels on.

"I was younger than her when I got married." Caroline replied.

Katherine pursed her lips, "And look how well that turned out."

Caroline glared at Katherine for a moment before nodding, "Yeah point taken."

"Come on, let's go get you one of those wild virgin cocktails." Katherine smirked, linking her arm through her best friend's as they headed out the door.

"I think is the worse bachelor party I've ever been to." Damon declared as the group of men sat in a large circular booth at a rather classy strip joint, if such a thing existed.

"No one is forcing you to stay." Klaus smiled through his teeth at the older Salvatore.

"It's my brother's bachelor party, of course I'm staying. Besides I'm not leaving Stefan wasted with all you Mikaelsons. Probably scare him out of marrying your sister." Damon laughed.

"I don't think that is a necessary talk to have, Stefan seems to have fitted himself right into our family." Elijah raised his drink at Stefan.

"If anything you're the one corrupting him Damon. I've never seen him this intoxicated." Klaus added. The two Salvatore brothers had been at a bar before meeting up with the rest of the party. Clearly Damon wanted his brother decidedly not sober this evening.

"Besides my sister has you so whipped." Kol said with a smirk.

"If being whipped means I get to go to sleep and wake up with Rebekah for the rest of my life, then I'm whipped and proud." Stefan grinned drunkenly, the liquid spilling out of his glass as he spoke animatedly.

"Okay okay enough true love talk. You're about to get married." Damon pointed to Stefan, who was now slurping on some pink concoction happily, "You're going to be Papa Klaus soon enough. And Elijah-well you just need to loosen up man."

"Come on people, Kol and I are the only ones who know how to have a good time."

"Ironically the only eternally singles ones." Stefan chuckled.

"Not if Kol has his way." Elijah announced with a grin as Kol glared at his older brother.

"What is he talking about?" Damon asked.

"B-O-N-N-Y." Stefan attempted to spell out.

Klaus erupted in laughter at his friend's drunken state.

"How do you know anything, Salvatore?" Kol sat up straighter.

Stefan smiled around his drink; "Caroline told me that you've been trying to get into her pants for weeks."

"I'm going to kill Caroline." Kol glowered.

Klaus raised his hand in protest, "Mother of my child."

Kol rolled his eyes, "Whatever I'm not talking about this anymore."
"Ooo testy." Damon smirked.

"Some would even say defensive." Stefan slurred.

"I'm going to get a lap dance." Kol stood up and left the group.

"That's more like it!" Damon agreed, and went to follow him.

"I love how every time we go out now Rebekah gets trashed." Katherine smirked as the bride stuffed a twenty into the stripper's thong.

Caroline half covered her eyes with one hand as another stripper started gyrating in front of her, "Remind me why we are still here? I thought we agreed the strip club portion of the evening was a one hour thing maximum."

Katherine chuckled as Bonnie and Rebekah started dancing with one of the strippers, "Good luck tearing the two of them away."

"God I should have left with Sage and the others." Caroline sighed with relief when the stripper got the hint and left.

"And go back to Sage's for probably a serving of tea at midnight? Ugh pass." Katherine replied.

"She's not that boring. She's just…settled."

"Settled, dead. Same difference. I'm going to get another drink. Want anything?" Katherine asked, standing up.

"Just another lemonade please. Oh, do you think they serve food here?" She was always hungry these days.

Katherine narrowed her eyes at her question, "Caroline the name of this lovely establishment is Starbutts. Even if they do serve food, are you sure you want some?"

Caroline smiled brightly, "You know what, I'm good with the lemonade thanks."

Katherine shook her head in amusement before walking in the direction of the bar.

Caroline went to grab her phone to sneak a few pictures of Rebekah and Bonnie, who looked ready to hop on the low stage, when she saw a message sitting in her inbox.

Clicking into it she saw it was from Klaus, sent a few minutes ago.

K: How are you?

Caroline raised her eyebrows in surprise, even when they had been together Klaus had never really been a texter. She knew he had concerns about her going out tonight though. The conversation had pretty much gone how she expected. She had tuned him out in favor of the latest issue of Vogue around about the time he said that pregnant women shouldn't be around strippers and jello shots. What did he know anyways?

Typing a short reply she quickly hit send, hoping he would drop the conversation.

C: I'm fine.

K: And baby?

Caroline couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lips.

C: Baby is fine too.

She bit her lip before adding,

C: How's the bachelor party going?

K: Pretty tame as far as stag do's go.

C: Are you kidding? You ditched yours at 12 to come help me with the seating chart. Doesn't get much tamer than that.

As soon as she hit send she regretted it, remembering exactly what they did before and after the seating plan got done. Hopefully he wouldn't remember. Please don't remember, don't remember, she chanted inwardly. Her phone lit up again with a new message, her face going bright as she read it.

K: I'm pretty sure we did more than plan some seating arrangement that night…

Sitting up a little straighter, she fumbled over the keypad as she typed the reply.

C: This isn't appropriate. I have to get back to the party.

K: Whatever you say Caroline. Text me when you're safe at home in bed.

Caroline scoffed loudly at his request, "Seriously?!"

Katherine appeared by her side, "Who are you talking to?"

"No one. Thanks." She said, taking the drink from her friend.

"I see." Katherine said, her tone clearly implying she didn't buy a word Caroline was selling.

"LADIES!" Rebekah exclaimed as she tottered over to them in her high heels.

"I've been called worse." Katherine joked.

"Why aren't you two dancing?" Rebekah pouted as Bonnie came up beside her.

"This is place is awesome." Bonnie finally got out between deep breathes of air.

Caroline giggled at her roommate's dazed yet happy expression. Bonnie and Rebekah weren't exactly best friends but they seemed to more than bond over a love of dancing.

Rebekah's face suddenly grew sour, "Do you know which way the bathroom is?" She said before making a quick exit.

"Oh buddy." Katherine replied, getting out of her seat and following her sister-in-law.

"For someone who looks like he barely eats you sure weigh a lot Salvatore." Kol groaned as he half dragged Stefan into the elevator.

Klaus, who was holding up Stefan's other side, looked to his younger brother, "Where's your best friend Damon now to help?"

"I believe he went home with one of the bartenders." Elijah replied, entering the elevator and hitting the button for Stefan and Rebekah's floor.

"Well at least it wasn't one of the strippers from that first place he took us to." Klaus quipped.

"I bet he is having more fun than us." Kol grumbled, shifting slightly as Stefan began to snore into his shoulder, "I never want to be this close to Stefan again."

The elevator dinged as it hit the top floor, Elijah walked out, letting his younger brothers carry Stefan towards the apartment.

"Rebekah for the last time, which key is for your apartment?" Katherine asked the blonde, who was currently sitting on the floor outside her apartment door, happily playing with Bonnie's hair.

"How many keys does she need?" Bonnie asked in confusion at the large set Katherine had pulled from Rebekah's purse.

"I think she has a key for every families members place and all vacation spots, and then work and maybe a key to Stefan's balls?" Katherine tilted her head in mock consideration.

Caroline and Bonnie laughed as they heard a group of men approach.

"Oh thank god!" Katherine exclaimed when she saw her husband round the corner. Walking over to Elijah she wrapped her arms around his neck before softly kissing his lips.

"I'm sorry do you mind?" Kol asked the couple, who were now blocking their way in the hallway.

"Actually I don't." Katherine grinned, pulling away from Elijah, choosing to grab his hand instead.

"Well aren't these two a pair." Klaus announced as he spotted his little sister, equally as intoxicated as her fiancé.

Caroline eyes glanced over at Klaus, both making awkward eye contact before quickly looking away. Caroline frowned, she knew why she was looking away but why was he?

Bonnie stood up, bringing Rebekah up with her, "Do you have the key for their place?"

"Yes I do. Stefan dropped his when he was getting out of the limo." Kol replied, grinning as he let go of Stefan and approached Bonnie, "How was your night?"

Bonnie bit her lip, slightly blushing at the attention he was giving her in front of everyone, "Fine." She stammered.

"Good." He smiled before turning the key in the lock.

Caroline yawned, leaning against the wall as she watched the two interact. Her head was sore and heavy from all the activities. All she wanted was her bed…and maybe a Big Mac.

"Are you alright?" Klaus asked, walking over to her, a hand resting gently on her arm.

"Yeah I'm fine, just tired I guess." She yawned again.

"I'm taking you home." Klaus responded.

"What about Bonnie?" She looked at her roommate who was helping Kol bring Rebekah into the apartment.

"Kol would love to bring her home I'm sure." Klaus rolled his eyes, as his brother gave him a 'big thumbs' up as he overheard their conversation.

"Okay." Caroline said softly, waving goodbye to the rest of the group as she followed Klaus out.

HXHXHXH

"I think I can make my own way from here." She said awkwardly to Klaus as she pushed her apartment door open.

"Nonsense." Klaus followed her into the apartment, "I'II wait until Bonnie's home."

Caroline turned around on her heel, "You do know I can be left alone right? I'm not giving birth for another 6 months or so Klaus. Besides Bonnie often stays over at Luca's so I'm alone a lot." She went to the small couch, slipping off her heels and heavy winter coat.

"She does? I must have a word with her about that." He replied.

"Klaus really, go home." She said at the same moment her stomach growled.

Caroline blushed profusely as Klaus let out a small laugh, "Hungry?" He asked, already taking off his jacket and moving towards her small kitchen.

"Klaus what are you doing?" She said, following her ex into the other room.

"I'm making you an omelet." He announced, scouring her fridge for ingredients.
Caroline smiled, remembering how he used to make them every Saturday the first few years they were married, "God I haven't had one of them in ages."

Klaus paused for a moment, realizing how true her words were. He had stopped cooking for her long before they're separation.

Caroline saw the look on his face and immediately registered how he took what she said, "Hey I didn't-"

"It's fine Caroline." He said curtly, beginning to crack eggs into a bowl.

Caroline scowled at his back, hating how he always brushed things under the rug, "Right, of course."

Klaus turned to say something about her tone when a loud voice announced, "Honey I'm home!" Kol bellowed, walking into the apartment.

Bonnie came in after him, giggling at his display.

Klaus rolled his eyes, "Did you drink more since we left you?"

"I may or may not have had a few sips of this-" Kol replied with an innocent face, taking out a silver flask from his coat pocket.

"It tasted like dishwater." Bonnie shuddered at the memory.

"Alcoholic dishwater." Kol winked at her.

Bonnie laughed again before walking out of the room; "I'm going to bed before I pass out. Night Care!"

Kol stared after her until her bedroom door clicked shut. Turning around to Klaus and Caroline he sighed dreamily, "The girl of my dreams refuses to go out with me."

"I think it's time to get you home, before you say anymore." Klaus flipped the eggs and fillings onto the pan, before turning to Caroline, "Just let them simmer for a few minutes and they'll be good to eat."

"Thanks." She nodded numbly.

"Are you two fighting again?" Kol pointed to the two of them.

"Kol. Door. Now." Klaus ordered.

"Nighty night Caroline." Kol sighed before walking out.

Caroline laughed lightly, "Night Kol."

Klaus turned to her before walking out of the room, "Goodnight Caroline."

Tipping her head she sent him a small smile, "Night Klaus."
