So who knows what the newest episode will bring...will we be rewarded for five long years of hope and heartache...or will the rug be pulled out from under us again...one thing is for sure #Burzek is Chicago PD & individually & as a couple they have had one hell of a ride & character growth.
Kim could hear the commotion at the front door and felt Makayla stiffen beside her and lean into her a little more. She slipped an arm around her shoulder. "It's okay sweetheart. I think I know who it is. It's Adam, you remember Adam."
The little girl looked up at her with her wide brown eyes and they were bubbling with tears.
"You are safe here with me." Kim assured her with a gentle rub of her back. "Let me get the door."
Kim waited until Makayla nodded before she went to open the door and was surprised when Makayla went and stood behind the kitchen bench, clutching her sparkly tailed platypus tightly to her chest. Kim's heart broke all over again, she had been through so much and still hadn't talked about what she saw on that day they found her.
She hadn't really said much since Kim had bought her home. It had been a long afternoon of wrangling to make it happen. Kim and Adam were the only two that were permitted to spend time alone with her at the moment.
"It's okay sweetheart. It's just Adam." Kim turned and told her when she peered through the peephole only to be confronted with a well-known eye. He did that a lot, when he knocked and he knew Kim always checked the peephole he always had his eye right up against it.
"Hello my favorite ladies." He chirped when Kim finally let him in. Makayla stepped out from behind the bench but still kept her distance and stood nervously watching him and seemed to be waiting for Kim to close the door so she could relax.
"What did you buy?" Kim tried to peer in the bags but Adam shooed her away.
"Well everything." Adam dumped three bags of groceries on the bench. "I wasn't sure what to get. I called my sister, but I'm not sure her idea of suitable kid food is the same as yours is going to be. I get a health freak vibe off you, not so much Kate."
He started unpacking the bags, detailing each purchase. "Banana's… you like narnybars don't you?" He looked at the terrified looking girl kindly and smiled when she nodded. "Great."
"What else?" Kim encouraged him when she saw Makayla move a little closer and look like she was interested.
"Well I bought blueberries and chocolate chips ready for Adam's magically breakfast pancakes." He placed them on the bench. "Some yogurt, my favorite M&M's, three different types of juices, bread, four different cheeses, ham, some weird fruit smoothie which is apparently good for your gut, Doritos and stuff for nachos, popcorn and finally cheerio's, because everyone likes cheerio's right?" He added with a flourish.
Kim noted that he also bought her favorite chocolate.
"So will it be? Adam's spectacular toasted ham and cheese sandwich, with my secret ingredient" he held up the bread. "…or nachos? And I also make a mean nachos. Cheese, Guac, refried beans, sour cream, the works."
Makayla pointed to the bread.
"Righto Toasty's it is, now, my two lovelies. How about you take a seat over there, put on a movie and let the master do his thing." he bowed a little.
Kim smiled at him. He was impossible to resist. It seemed even Makayla couldn't resist him and climbed up onto the stool at the bench, still holding her platypus and watched Adam moving around the small kitchen.
"Shall we have a drink?" Kim added. "Milk all round."
Once she poured them Adam made them all have a toast. "It's so good to see you again Makayla. We are so happy you are here." He tapped her glass before taking a big swig and getting back to the business of making them dinner.
"What's in that bag?" Kim pointed to the two backpacks Adam had dumped on the way in. One was always his work clothes 'just in case' but the other was a mystery.
"All in good time." He turned to Makayla "Watch this one…always trying to open presents before her birthday."
"It's not my birthday."
"No?" he kissed her cheek "No it's not, but it is a good day." They both liked the way that Makayla smiled at them and watched closely. They had no idea what her home like was like even before the tragedy but odd were it wasn't good.
Makayla didn't eat much before Kim took her for a shower while Adam cleaned up the dishes. It was obvious that Makayla was still deeply affected by all the trauma she'd been through. They knew she had a sweet smile and the quietest little voice but they hadn't heard it much. Kim was desperate to make her feel comfortable though and she had bought her new pyjamas and some books and pencils to use for coloring in. The day they found Makayla she had been happy to sit and color. Makayla was always reaching for her hand, or to hide behind her legs and watched whenever Kim left the room until she came back.
Adam was trying not to overwhelm her as well. She seemed to respond to his gentle fun conversations even if she didn't say anything. They just wanted to smother her with love.
Once she was showered Kim showed her where her room and bed were. Adam was already in there and he had cleared off a spot on the small side table and set up a little Chicago Cubs lamp that gave off a soft glow.
"Where did that come from?"
"It was mine when I was growing up. When we were….you know…" he shrugged. "…anyway Dad gave it to me and I thought Makayla might like it." He touched it tenderly and it was obvious that it meant a lot to him.
Makayla placed her teddy bear next to the lamp but held onto her platypus.
"I'm going to be right through there." Kim choked up a little and pointed to the bedroom across the small hallway. I will the lamp on and the light in the hall and my door will be open, you can come in anytime or call out and I will come in. Okay?"
Makayla nodded.
"Or I can sleep in here with you."
She shook her head softly and clutched her platypus even tighter. "He stay?" It was the first words Makayla had uttered since Adam arrived.
"He can, do you want him to stay?"
She nodded. Kim knew Adam wouldn't say no. He never did, whatever lifeline Kim threw him he grabbed onto it with both hands. They had agreed to spend the next few weeks on the whole 'dating' thing and if at the end of the month they decided that they were better as friends then that was it. She looked at him quickly and his smile had reached all the way to his eyes.
Adam was happy to jump in with both feet but it was still Kim that was a little wary. She at least agreed that she couldn't speak for him and when he said he was ready he meant it. Makayla had stopped them in their tracks a little but it was just a momentary delay. Adam made sure Kim knew that.
They did decide to watch a movie together and Makayla sat stiffly beside Kim on the couch. Adam sat on the other side of Kim and slowly she moved closer to Kim until she was resting her head on a cushion that Kim had placed on her lap when she started to get tired and eventually drifted off to sleep. They left her for a while, she obviously felt safe and comfortable where she was.
Adam didn't watch the movie, he watched Kim be everything she wanted to be to Makayla. She was being a mother and he was mesmerized.
Lifting Makayla up gently he followed Kim into the bedroom and lay her gently on the bed. Kim tucked the blankets around her and made sure her toys were tucked up with her. Kim stood beside her bed and watched her sleep until Adam tugged on her arm.
"You can't spend the next twelve hours watching her sleep." He led her from the room back into the lounge.
"Why not?"
"It's creepy. You will creep her out."
Kim curled up against him. "That lamp Adam, that was so sweet."
He reached for his drink. Surprisingly they were both just sticking to mineral water tonight. They often enjoyed a beer together at night or a bottle of wine but with Makayla here Kim wanted everything perfect and not drinking in front of her was one thing she was adamant. "I am sweet."
"Yes you are."
Without even looking she knew he was smiling. His chest always moved when he smiled.
"My Pops kept it and when we were having the baby and I was going to move in here he gave it to me for the baby. I had it at his house, when my folks split up it was something that I took to his place so I wouldn't miss home too much."
"Well I am glad it's here now."
"Me too."
"Maybe you'll be here soon."
"I really plan on it."
Kim checked on Makayla three times before they went to bed and Adam was amused that she climbed into bed fully clothed. "Is this what life is going to be like when we have babies? No more naked sleeping."
"Yes." Kim sat up quickly and kissed him. "Exactly like this."
"Bummer."
For a few moments they talked about the few days ahead and what it might look like for Kim and Makayla and Adam promised he'd be here whenever he wasn't working. Voight had given Kim some time off so they would be one man down, he wasn't keen to bring anyone in for just a few days. They were already down one with Rojas just disappearing. She had just transferred one day, realising that she wasn't cut out for the type of policing some people expected her to do.
Suddenly Kim's eyes flew open. "Sweetheart." She sat up. "What's wrong?"
Makayla said nothing but just tossed her platypus up on the bed and climbed up in between them. Adam held the sheets up while Kim helped her settle in. She rolled towards Kim a little and closed her eyes.
"Just so you know…." Adam whispered quietly. "….this is the only woman, man or platypus I am letting come between us again."
"I love you Adam." Kim reached for his hand which was on top of the covers yet still protectively resting on Makayla. He let her hand slip under his.
"Love you to Darlin'. I think this dating thing is a winner."
