Chapter 2:
Talon rolled into a ball as he tried to go back to sleep. This was his third time waking up in the middle of the night. He moaned a bit to himself. He twisted around, facing the other direction. He snuggled into his moss floored corner of the medicine den. He could barely see out the entrance but a small sliver of the night sky was visible. He stretched his neck to gaze at the sky. Then, he heard footsteps. They were barely noticeable as if someone was trying not to be heard. Another pair of footsteps appeared, and another. Three pairs of footsteps were walking silently. Talon heard whispering from one of the pairs of footsteps. Those are cat voices! Talon thought. He quietly got up from his moss covered corner and gently walked over to the entrance. He looked past the entrance and gazed at the three cats talking. They had black pelts blacker than a sky without a moon. Eyes eviler than a dog's. Those are the cats that killed Hazel! Talon thought. He started to shake in fear thinking of what they would do if they found him. He slowly backed away from the entrance keeping an eye on the cats until the walls of the medicine den blocked his view. He went back to his moss covered corner and layed down hoping they would leave. He soon found himself in a dream, not knowing what was going on. He was in a dark space with nothing in it. He was left to wander until he saw a small light a few fox-lengths away. He slowly walked up to it. He was a whisker away when he touched it with his nose. The light quickly moved away. Talon walked to it. He pawed at it this time. The light got bigger and surrounded him. He was in a bubble of light, sunlight. He looked around, amazed at beauty. He turned his gaze to the cat sitting in the middle of the bubble. He trotted to the figure. As he was getting closer, the figure stood up slowly and turned around. Talon stopped. The figure was his mom! Hazel walked up to him.
"You are not safe. The cats have found you. Please stay safe." Hazel licked between Talon's ears and faded away. Her words echoed in his mind. What did they mean? Did it have to do with me seeing them at night? Talon's thinking was interrupted by a screeching cat. He instantly woke up from his dream. He walked to the entrance of the medicine den to see what the commotion was about. He peered past the wall noticing disturbances in the grass outside, like scratches. He was about to look up when Cinderriver came rushing at him.
"Are you okay? Are you hurt?" She asked quickly.
"Uh, no?" Talon meowed confused. Cinderriver looked over Talon. She gave a sigh of relief.
"The cats came last night. They were looking for you." She meowed. Talon looked at her. "They even killed one of our elders for information about you."
