On the starship Enterprise-E, Captain Jean-Luc Picard sits at his Captain's chair. Counselor Deanna Troi sits beside him and his first officer, notably not Commander Riker, but a woman named Commander Ruth Baynard sits beside him. Riker has long gone as he became the Captain of the USS Titan, taking Wesley Crusher along with him as a member of his engineering crew. Despite this, the ship seems to run very efficiently with Geordi La Forge still working in Engineering along with Barclay and Dr. Beverly Crusher as his Chief Medical Officer.
When the hail arrived from Deep Space Nine, Captain Picard put it through without hesitation.
"Worf. It's good to hear from you. How are things over in the Gamma-Quadrant?" Picard starts, but is immediately cut off by Worf's more-than-normally serious expression.
"Captain. I'm glad you're alright. We've found a ship here. Destroyed. The Enterprise," Worf begins.
"The Enterprise?" The Captain asks.
"An older version. It's familiar to something I've seen before. We could deal with it ourselves, but I thought you'd want to know. Because the crew–" Worf continues.
"What about the crew?" Picard asks.
"Commander –I mean Captain. The Captain of the starship. It's Data," He stops.
"Data was destroyed, Lieutenant Commander," Picard remains calm.
"Yes, I know, but this Data –he was found on the Enterprise-D with a Commander Tasha Yar," He continues, "From a parallel universe, sir," He says.
"We'll head that way," Picard says as Deanna watches him closely.
"Yes sir, I'm sure they'll be happy to see you," Worf says. The channel closes and Picard stands.
"Captain, what's going on?" Commander Baynard asks, joining him in his stance.
"It's a long story, Commander. I need some time. Change course to meet at the Deep Space Nine station," He moves away from control and Deanna stands as well.
"Yes Captain," An Ensign says as he alters their path.
"Captain, may I speak with you privately?" Troi asks.
"Of course. In my ready room, Counselor," He answers. "Commander Baybard, you have the bridge," He says.
