Lost Contact

Summer stopped on the way back to her office. The deadline of the report were three days away, the stack of exam papers in her arms could wait for a bit as she spotted a familiar figure.

The clock pointed past five. Classes ended. And yet, Jaune stood by himself before the mission board. For some reason, he looked excited with that faint smile.

Maybe he found a new mission. He had always been eager to forge his combat skill by real experience. She was like that in her school days too. Together with the rest of her team, the best of the bests.

A light tap on the shoulder finally made that pair of sapphires to move away from the hologram and look at her. His faint smile grew bigger. Something good did happen.

"Jaune, have you decided on your next mission yet?"

"YES!" He shouted and quickly covered his mouth. Oh the dorkiness! "I m-mean yeah. Ms. Peach just contacted me. I'm thinking about the one she offered."

"Peach? Isn't she away on a trip recently? What did she offer you?"

"It's a solo mission." Jaune flipped a picture on the hologram. "She wants me to search for an artifact somewhere in the south. It was made before the Grimm War. She didn't give me any detail so I'm not really sure what it looks like, but she did give me the coordinate on this digital map. I've already said yes."

Just the map and nothing else? Summer knew Peach preferred details for everything she did. How unusual.

"Are you sure about this? Maybe you can pick another team mission and work with CRDL or CFVY."

"I did! I…..I did reconsider taking a team mission. But I chose the solo career like you Ms. Rose. This could be a good chance for me to gain that kind of experience."

"I don't know, sweetie. This place is beyond the Kingdom's border, beyond the wall. This is different, it's risky. Do you think you can handle this alone?"

"I…I don't know, to be honest. But I need to try and see for myself." Jaune insisted. "It will be okay, Ms. Rose. Please let me do this."

Summer felt conflicted.

Taking a solo mission meant he would be alone out there. That place on the map was beyond the border, somewhere among the Grimm infested lands. She wouldn't want to think about that time when he was almost beyond her reach.

"Besides, Ms. Peach said she will help me during this mission. She will be there before me. I won't be alone."

It was not something that Summer would encourage to do, not when Remnant had changed. But still, she needed to cast aside those thoughts.

This could be different. After all, he improved.

"Okay, we can't help it if you've already made up your mind. When do you want to start?"

"Ms. Peach wants me to be on my way early so I'll catch the Bullhead tomorrow morning."

"Then you should get more warm clothes, Jaune. Winter is colder this year. I'll make some cookies for you. Be sure to take them before you go, sweetie."

"Awesome, Ms. Rose!"

"I'll be calling you, okay."

[5 hours after departure]

[Incoming Call]

Jaune: Hey Ms. Rose!

Summer: Hi sweetie. Just wanted to check. How was the trip?

Jaune: I don't think we are even one third of the road yet. The pilot said it's going to take few days to get there since there're heavy storms coming. This flight is going to take longer than I thought it would be.

Summer: Are you cold?

Jaune: I have your scarf right here, wrapping around my neck. It's cozy.

Summer: *Giggle* I'm on my way to the next Combat Class now. I'll call you later.

Jaune: I'll see you!

[13 hours after departure]

[Incoming Call]

Summer: Hi Jaune, did the Bullhead cross the border?

Jaune: Not…yet. *Gulp*

Summer: Sweetie, are you alright?

Jaune: The whole thing is s-shaking. There's a snow…a snowstorm outside. We have to take a detour. Oh man, I don't feel so good…motion sickness is kicking in!

Summer: Did you take the medicine?

Jaune: I took it. Bu…..but the ride won't stop shaking. *Urg* Dust, I need a trash can!

Summer: Hang in there.

Jaune: Yup! He told me the same thing. Urghhhhhh-!

[Day 2]

[Incoming Call]

The pilot: Here kid. I put on the video call for you.

Jaune: Thank you…..hi, Ms. Rose.

Summer: Jaune!? You look pale!

Jaune: It's alright, Ms. Rose. I just need to lie down for a bit. That hellish flight is finally over.

The pilot: What are you talking about? That was a pretty smooth trip.

Jaune: Until a hive of Lancers appears!

The pilot: And I got us out of there! Come on kid, you gotta appreciate my talent. Nobody has ever brought a Bullhead so close to one of the Grimm Nests and escaped unscathed like me. By the way, remember to clean the mess on the floor when you feel better.

Jaune: Groan!

Summer: Jaune, don't push yourself too hard.

Jaune: Yes, Ms. Rose. Are you working right now?

Summer: I'm in my office, doing some grading for the Leader class assignments. Oh! Zwei, come here! Say hello to Jaune.

Zwei: Bark!

Summer: Aww, look at those puppy eyes. He misses you.

Jaune: Yup. Who's gonna take you for a walk around the campus now that I'm away. You have to wait for me, buddy.

Summer: Actually, Velvet walks with him now.

Jaune: Uh what?

Summer: She volunteered to do it in your stead. Zwei seems happy with it.

Zwei: Bark!

Jaune: Zwei! You traitor!

Summer: *Giggle* Anyway, get some rest, Jaune. You need it.

Jaune: Okay. See you later, Ms. Rose. Remem…*Urgh*…remember this betrayal, Zwei!

[Day 3]

[Incoming Call]

Summer: Hi sweetie, have you been feeling better?

Jaune: Better, Ms. Rose.

?: Arc, my boy! How is the adventure?

Jaune: Is that…..?

Summer: I have some guests in my office. Would you mind if I switch to video call?

Jaune: N-Not at all! I'll switch on mine.

Port: Hello Arc, my boy!

Jaune: Hi Professor Port, Dr. Oobleck is here too.

Oobleck: How are you feeling, Mr. Arc?

Jaune: Not bad, I guess. The flight is not over yet. So, yeah, I have to endure the motion sickness some more. *Sigh*

Oobleck: Do you have the stuff I gave you?

Jaune: Yes! The coffee brand you recommended to me and the solar battery charger for my scroll. Right here in my backpack.

Oobleck: Good! Good! Coffee will help you focus. Good smell and taste great, an excellent brand of choice. Remember to charge your scroll regularly. You'll be better at navigation with information and technology. Nevertheless, I wish you good luck on your first solo mission, young man. It may be difficult to end up as an irregular number in the academy, but I'm sure there are plenty of advantage to a solo career. Beware of dangers and do your best!

Port: Let me hear your story when you return, my boy! I look forward to the tale of the brave young Arc, who ventured outside the border to slay the Grimm that terrorize Remnant for decades and came back in glory.

Jaune: I'm just searching for an artifact….oh wait…..oh, you were….right, that was a joke.

Port: An exaggeration, yes! *Laugh*

Oobleck: Well done, Mr. Arc. You dodged the bullet. It's quite horrible.

Summer: *Sigh* Sometimes, you have to question Peter's manner of humor.

Port: Surely it is one that I enjoy! Now, allow me to enlighten you with the tale of my younger-self as I-

Oobleck: Oh would you look at the time! We should go grab lunch before break ends!

Summer: I'll call you back, sweetie!

Jaune: Yup!

Cardin: Hey Jauney!

Jaune: Yeah?

Cardin: Heard you were on a mission south of Vale? How did it go?

Jaune: I'm still on my way there. Why are you asking?

Cardin: You hear that, guys? He's not done with the mission yet!

Russel: Hey, hey! Jauney!

Jaune: What?

Russel: Can you get us some souvenirs?

Jaune: What are you talking about?

Sky: Yeah, I heard the local food from the south coast is really good. Bring back some for us!

Jaune: I'm on a mission!

Dove: Which happens to be near there. Just take a detour and do us a favor, man! We'll share with you!

Jaune: I get it. You guys are messing with me, aren't you?

Cardin: Come on Jauney, taking a round trip won't do you any harm!

Jaune: The pilot is not going to agree with that, and neither do I. Oh hey! Would you look at that! Ms. Rose is calling me. I'm hanging up!

Cardin: Bring back some souve-

[Day 4]

[Incoming Call]

Jaune: Unknown ID? Hello, this is Jaune Arc speaking.

?: Hey kiddo, caught the news. You left Vale?

Jaune: Err, who's calling?

?: You don't recognize this voice?

Jaune: I….err…I don't.

?:….

Jaune: …..

?: Just answer my question, kid.

Jaune: Yes, I'm outside the Kingdom's border. I'm on a mission and I'm not sure when it will be done. Can I know who I'm speaking to now?

?: Your favorite merchant and gentleman entrepreneur at your service, kid. Hey, is Neo with you? I haven't seen her around for two days.

Jaune: Roman?!

Roman: Yeah, yeah, leave the surprise for later, kid. I got information flows around the back of my hand so of course I know your scroll number. Have you seen Neo or is she with you? I'm in the middle of a very important business deal right now, and I need her help ASAP! Can't believe she just left me a piece of paper and ditched the shop.

Jaune: Um, no? It's only me and the Bullhead pilot over here.

Roman: Did the pilot speak?

Jaune: A lot. Yeah.

Roman: *Sigh*

Jaune: Why do you assume Neo is with me?

Roman: You have no idea, kid.

Jaune: What does that means?

Roman: Nothing. Moving on. When will you be done with the job?

Jaune: I really don't know. A week, maybe? I'm heading south right now.

Roman: South of Vale? That's funny, kid.

Jaune: Why? What's wrong with it?

Roman: Several areas from the South has been disconnected from the world for years ever since the Grimm Nests appear. No one knows what happened to the civilizations that live there. Well, since it's your mission. I'm not going to pry. Fill me in if you happen to know Neo's whereabout. I'll register an escort mission with your name in the requirement, kid. Come find me when you're back. I got tons of goods needed to be delivered.

Jaune: Fine. It's nothing major, right? The deal you were talking about?

Roman: No. It's nothing. I have everything under control. I just need her here to show my long-time clients some intimidations.

Jaune: That's bad business.

Roman: We're living in an era of hardship and creepy monsters casually walk the world. I'd have no complaint if the world didn't change for the worst after the Grimm War. Believe me, kid. Remnant had seen better days years ago. Now I'm a businessman and I work very HARD to help those who work for me and myself. Then again, not just the Grimm but customers these days show no limit to their creativity in causing me to lose profit.

?: Are you really sure about that?

Roman: Yes. I AM sure about it. Miss Tinder.

Cinder: Excuse me!? My name is Cinder!

?: It's okay, Cinder. We can accept the deal.

Cinder: But Rhodes!

Roman: Whoops! There's the big catch! See you later, kiddo.

[Day 5]

[Incoming Call]

Jaune: Hey Ms. Rose!

Summer: Hey there, sweetie. How is the trip so far?

Jaune: Still a long way from the coordinate. We went passed the Kingdom's border, pretty far now. But the Bullhead has to land since we're in the middle of another snowstorm. I'll turn on the camera for you to see…..there.

Summer: The weather looks bad.

Jaune: And doesn't seem like it's going to improve. Either way, I checked the map. There's an old CCT relay tower about 200 miles from here. It's not functioning anymore but there's a storage next to it. We're going to look for additional supply when the storm passed.

Summer: Supply? Jaune, is everything alright?

Jaune: Definitely!

The pilot: We're running short of fuel!

Jaune: You don't have to tell her that!

Summer: Jaune….

Jaune: D-Don't worry, Ms. Rose! Everything is under control. We just need some fuel.

The pilot: And something to eat! Food and water ran out this morning!

Summer: Jaune…

Jaune: You know what! I have some snacks in my backpack here-Hey! Those are Ms. Rose's cookies! I'm not giving you that! Sorry, Ms. Rose. I'll call you back!

[Day 6]

[Incoming Call]

Jaune: Ms. Rose, can you hear me? Is my voice clear?

Summer: Oh Jaune, thank goodness! I was so worried when you didn't pick up. What happened?

Jaune: I'm sorry. My scroll went out of range. The Kingdom's CCT network couldn't reach here. Good news! Me and the pilot managed to make the old CCT tower worked again. Turns out there's a backup generator and stacks of main boards in the storage. They even have food! We got everything we need!

Summer: That's good to hear, sweetie.

Jaune: Yeah. The storm is over. It's sunny blue sky here, we can be on our way again.

Summer: Jaune, listen. About…about the mission. If things….if it doesn't work out, you know you can abort the mission at any time and come back to Beacon. You have that decision.

Jaune: Yes. But we got the tower fixed and things look good so far.

Summer: I….I'm not sure.

Jaune: What's wrong, Ms. Rose?

Summer: I'm worried, Jaune. This seems to take longer than it should be.

Jaune: I…..I get that feeling too. Still, we're close. I'll complete the objective Ms. Peach gave me then return.

Summer: Have you heard anything from Peach?

Jaune: I sent her some texts for the mission details. She hasn't replied yet.

Summer: In that case, I'll call her and ask the details for you.

Jaune: Huh?

Summer: Let me help you, Jaune. The sooner you can find what she needs, the sooner you can come back. If things still don't work out, just leave. I can request the committee to raise the level of the mission and you can leave this to your seniors while moving on to another mission that suits your ability. You can't stay outside the Kingdom's border for too long, who knows what sort of monsters the Grimm Nests will spawn in this winter.

Jaune: Don't worry, Ms. Rose. I accepted this mission so I'm going to do it. We only search for an artifact, I can handle this.

The pilot: Yeah, it's not like we're going to stare at a Wendigo in the face. Or fight a Yeti.

Jaune: You really are going to jinx us both if you keep joking like that!

Summer: Don't do anything reckless, alright. This isn't about the responsibility of a Huntsman. You're mine precious student, I don't want anything to happen to you.

Jaune: I…I'll keep that in mind. I won't do anything a trainee shouldn't do.

Summer: Good. Stay safe, sweetie. I'll call you back.

Jaune: Thanks, Ms. Rose. I'll be in touch.

[Day 7]

[Incoming Call]

Jaune: Hey Ms. Rose. Good news! I think we arrived at the location!

Summer: That's great! How is the place?

Jaune: Well, about that…..

Summer: What is it, Jaune?

Jaune: We reached the coordinate Ms. Peach marked on the digital map. But I don't…..I mean all I'm seeing is snow and tall trees. We're deep in a forest and I don't see her anywhere.

Summer: Have you tried calling her?

Jaune: I tried.

Ping!

Jaune: Oh wait! She just sent me a picture. It looks like a map of this area. She marked a new location. I'll pack my stuff in the Bullhead and move there now.

Summer: I'll leave you to it, then. Thanks for letting me know, sweetie. Good luck on your mission and remember, control your emotion and watch out for the Grimm. Tell Peach I said hi.

Jaune: Got it!

[Call Ended]

Jaune stepped out the Bullhead. Backpack properly strapped onto his torse. Crocea Mors was ready to leave the scabbard at the slightest hint of any danger wandering near him.

"Hey kid." The pilot suddenly called.

"Yes?"

"Will you be alright?"

"I have a Professor with me. I'm going to be okay."

"Did she tell you where to meet?"

"Yes, we're going to meet up in the next location she marked on the digital map. She did mention there's another pilot with her. We plan to return together when the mission is completed."

"Cool. I, err, look." The pilot sighed, he seemed worried. "I didn't mean to be offense or anything. Huntsman or not, I don't think anyone should be moving around by foot in this place, kid. Not this deep in the forest. The whole place is full of bad vibe. Are you really sure this is the right place where she wants you to start the mission?"

"Yeah…I think, I mean I'm positive!"

"If you say so. I'll stop by the nearest CCT tower to resupply for a day before heading back to Beacon. I gave you my scroll number so give me a call right away if you need an emergency pickup. I'll come as quickly as I can."

"Um, yeah. Thank you. Mr…..?"

"The name is Fenix Atar. Just call me Fenix. Former SDC transport pilot, now a full-time staff of Beacon Academy. It's my job to take future huntsmen like you to where you need to go and make the world a better place." Fenix said proudly.

"Right. Thanks for giving me a ride!"

"No problem! I had a lot of fun talking with you along the way, kid. Take care of yourself out here."

Jaune took a few steps back and watched the Bullhead rise to the sky. When the wind calmed down, it was time to move.

[Day 8]

[Start voice message]

Jaune: Hey Ms. Rose. I didn't hear you pickup so I probably called at the wrong time. I'll just leave this voice message to you. The pilot gave me his number so we can keep in touch in case of emergency. There's no more storm so he will head back to Beacon in a couple of days. Heh, turns out he a pretty decent guy with all those jokes! Anyway, I'm still on my way to Ms. Peach's location. Fought some stray Beowolves along the way. Nothing too big.

Ping!

Jaune: Just sent you some pictures. I'm setting up a tent right now. Professor Port's survival bootcamp turns out to be useful!…..okay, please don't tell him I said that. To be honest, it's cold out here in the wood. Plenty of strong breezes around the trees, but the scarf you made really helps. Bonfire's up and running, the Moon shines really bright tonight. I saw some landmarks that look like the one Ms. Peach mentioned in her messages. Tomorrow morning, I'm going to meet her in that direction and start the search for the artifact. Anyway, I wanted to let you know I'm doing okay. Tonight's not all that bad.

Snap!

Jaune: The tent?! Dust! Not again!

[Voice message Ended]

[Start voice message]

Summer: Jaune, I heard the message. I'm sorry I wasn't able to answer the call. I'm in the middle of supervising another team on their mission. A village was on the verge of being attacked by a large pack of Beringels, which spawned from the closer Nest. Right now, we're planning an evacuation. I won't be able to call you for a little while. Please send me voice messages whenever you have the time, okay. It helps me to know that you're doing alright with the mission. I'll give you a proper call when I return to Beacon. Take care, sweetie.

[Day 9]

[Start voice message]

Jaune: Ms. Rose. I…..I don't know what to say, I mean I can't really describe it. Ms. Peach stopped sending me messages over night and she didn't answer my calls. I came to the location where we were supposed to meet and uh…..I found out that no one's here. It's a ghost town. The reception is weaker. No sign of Grimm too. I think I just saw a portable CCT station at the edge of the town. I'll see if I can reboot the signal then have a look around. I'll also take pictures and send you the details later.

BBbbzzzztzttt!

Jaune: I hoped nothing bad happened to Ms. Peach. This is so strange.

And the reception somehow…it somehow ended up dead! I can't reach anyone! I need to record this. There's still no sign of Grimm yet. These buildings seem to stretch along these woods. See that big wall over there? I don't know why they would build such a large structure in the middle of the town. Maybe it was for protection. I'll go there next. Let's hope Ms. Peach is on the other side. Ms. Rose, I….*Sigh*…..never mind.

[Day 12]

Sapphires widened in horror. Panic gasps didn't give him time to breath. Jaune ran as fast as he could with uncertainty squeezed his mind.

He ducked just in time when a disfigured shape launched forward like a enrage beast. A chilling sound echoed like a bone was broke. It made his blood run cold. That was not possible! That person wouldn't be standing up again if their neck bent like that!

Jaune didn't know what to think of anymore. All sort of explanation never seemed to exist in this kind of place.

Coco: She just initiated a search and rescues mission with your face popping everywhere on campus! The Headmistress tries to calm her down. You don't make a woman worrying sick like that, got it! So listen Arc, you better answer our calls right away or my team will go out there and drag you back! Choose the later and here's a bonus. [Day 14]

He rubbed his eyes. He hadn't slept for days now. This whole thing was a nightmare.

The air was cold, but he couldn't light a fire, because that would be a dead giveaway sign to those…...whatever those things were out there.

[Start recording]

"Um, okay…..err. This is my third recording message after two days. I know I'm going to sound like an idiot. In case that anyone happened to hear this, please don't laugh…or maybe yeah, laugh to your heart content but please don't take this as a joke because I am not joking."

Jaune looked at half of the shattered moon. There was a tiny window in this corner of the room.

"Oh well, here we go. Bad news, I accidently dropped my scroll. There was a tree branch pops out in the middle of the way and…...on second thought, forget what I said. It's not important. And good news, I found this scroll among a bunch of leftover items in an old pawn shop. I managed to recharge it thanks to Dr. Oobleck's solar battery charger. At this point, I'm just rambling to release the stress. Wouldn't want to attract the Grimm or any unnecessary attention out there."

Sigh.

"My first solo mission. This is totally not what I imagined. Having a monologue to somebody else scroll while I'm hiding."

Bam!

"Eep!?"

That came from somewhere out the window. Jaune took a deep breath and peaked through the gap, searching for the source. The weather picked up tonight, strong gusts of wind was not that uncommon in this harsh winter.

Bam!

There was it again. Oh!

"Okay, that's just the window. Jeez! Why do you have to scare me like that? Ahem! Like I said, this is not my scroll. I lost it as I was trying to escape from them. They're acting like Grimm even though they are human. I'm not sure I want to stick around and find out what happened. I could have run back to the direction where I came from. But for some reason, the path is blocked."

He gritted his teeth. Frustrated.

"I'm completely trapped here. I really want to go back to Beacon. I really want to let my mentor know that I'm still doing alright, mostly. Knowing Ms. Rose, I'm sure she's probably thinking something bad happened to me right now. I don't want to make her worry. I…..I don't want Ms. Rose to shed tears again because of me."

That time in the Grimmland and a whole month of disappearing, those were enough.

"If only I can send her a message. I'll…I'll find a way to get out of here and contact the pilot. The first thing here is to replace the damaged components of the CCT station. I need to look for replace parts, somehow. I guess it's time I put in my odd jobs experience again. As long as the CCT network reaches here, I can call for help. It looks like I won't be able to meet up with Ms. Peach when things turn out like this. Dust, I'm not sure if she is even here after all."

Growl!

"Eh, that's my stomach. Pretend you didn't hear that. I still have some food left in my backpack. Probably enough for a couple of days. I'll stop this recording here. Better eat something and rest for now…...wait a minute, I don't remember putting chocolate and strawberry ice creams in here."

[Recording Ended]

The door made a slight knock and opened. White cloak revealed through the gap.

"Come in, Summer."

"I got your message, Glynda! Have you found out where Jaune is!?"

"I'm afraid not yet. Please stay calm, Summer. I will explain what happened and we can begin a search and rescue operation immediately. The staff found evidence of a data breach in our system. Peach's personal info has been stolen. I managed to contact her just now. Her expedition with the Belladonnas at Menagerie is still ongoing, Kali has already sent me pictures to confirm that."

"Then that means….!?"

"The mission was a fake. Peach's info was used to deceive Mr. Arc. Normally, all assignment given to Huntsmen should be registered through the mission board based on the regulations written by the Council. Under any circumstance, I will be the one to review the details of the assignments and provide confirmation. No private commissions are allowed without my authorization. And yet, this happens, right under my watch. I'm so sorry, Summer. A student is in danger because I was careless."

"No. You have done nothing wrong, Glynda. I'm his mentor and yet, I did not know. I let him fall into a trap. Now he is truly alone out there with the Grimm." Her voice shook. "This is happening again. It's my fault! It's like…with my baby girls…..….I can't imagine what he is going through out there!"

Quickly, a pair of arms wrapped around her. The Headmistress pulled a teary Summer into a tight embrace.

"Don't be too harsh on yourself, Summer. There's no way we could have known that. I know it's difficult, but we need to place our trust in Mr. Arc's ability. He is your apprentice and a clever young man after all. Surely, he can take care of himself. Listen, I'm giving you full authorization for this operation. Gather two teams with you. The Bullhead that Mr. Arc took is currently waiting at the dock. Mr. Fenix knows the drop-off location. He will provide the details to you."

"Thank you, Glynda."

"Let's bring our student back."

[Day 15]

Steadily, he reached into his pocket and played the recording. He tried his best not to make any sound. He had no idea what they would do if he made one subtle noise.

[Start recording]

"Dr. Merlot. I am regretted to inform you that little pesky Huntsman trainee Jaune Arc has managed to escape our subjects."

Jaune felt the jolt in his memories. Subjects? The people of this town?

"The ambush didn't work, he has survival skills. Yes, the subjects are searching for him."

The owner of that voice was on the scroll. Using the shattered glass of mirror, he stared at the reflection of that person and the room. He saw a white lab coat stretched below the back of that man's knees. He saw the name of a certain notorious corporation that should have been forgotten.

Merlot Industries.

That name spoke volumes about that man's occupation.

"Ah yes, there's something else you should know. The experiment ended as a failure. After seven years, there is no significant progress. None of the subjects is compatible to the Grimm Liquid as we speak."

Sapphires widened. He heard that term before. No, he saw it. In the depth of the Grimm Nest.

"The slightest positive results are the skin and hair color remain unchanged. However, the deplete in human's rational thoughts remains a major concern despite hundreds of trials have been done. That is as far as we can get for the Hybrid project."

That man was using people as experiments!

Jaune tried his best to restraint the urge to draw Crocea Mors. As much as he wanted to burst into the room, Jaune knew that was not really the best course of action. Right now, he needed information. He needed all the details he could get from this conversation.

"Go back to our primary topic, I ask you not to worry, the plan is in motion. The CCT network can't reach the town. He is deemed to be trapped like a rat in a cage. No, I assure you that your plan will not fail. I understand the important of resurrecting the Queen. Jaune Arc's Semblance will be the catalyst to restore the remaining fragment of her Aura."

Jaune flinched.

"But surely you too are aware that the Hero of Remnant will not let this happen. Once Jaune Arc disappears, Summer Rose will not be silent. She will search for her precious apprentice just as she once desperately searched for her ill-fated daughters. We have plan for her once she arrived to save him."

[Recording Ended]

Jaune stopped the recording.

He was shocked.

A sudden burst of anger almost overwhelmed his rational thoughts. This whole mission was a fraud, a setup. The people of this town were turned into feral beings, their natures were twisted because a group of individuals wanted to cut deeper the wound this world already had.

Stay calm, he whispered something like that. Then he quietly moved, away from the room, away from that man, and away from the central building. It was not worth it, because he got what he needed. The CCT replace parts were inside the backpack.

Jaune felt his heartbeats slow down. He successfully kept his emotion in check. And yet, he didn't notice the tingling pain in his hand until he looked at it.

He was still holding the piece of glass, gripping so hard that it cut deep into his palm.

She will search for her precious apprentice.

Any trace of Aura left around his hand was gone, that was why there were traces of dark red liquid dripping nonstop. Because he shifted the flow. It all concentrated on the other one.

Just as she once desperately searched for her ill-fated daughters.

The amount of strength resided on Crocea Mors' handle had never been so intense.

"Good luck."

Glynda, alone, stayed at the dock to see everyone leave.

The Bullhead finally took off. The engine roared lightly within the cabin.

Summer watched the snow falling outside. She wanted there to be a change. She wished for a sign of hope. She couldn't help but letting the screen on the scroll reflect the distress on her face.

"Professor Rose." A small hand gently placed on her shoulder. "We'll find him."

Velvet smiled, reassuring the leader of the search and rescue party.

"Yeah! Jauney is tough. He won't go down so easily. I mean what happened in the Grimmla-"

Russel's unfinished remark earned him a quick jab.

"Don't remind her that." Cardin said.

"Okay, then…oh! Remember that time when Cardin and Jauney got dragged away to-"

"Don't remind her that too." Yatsuhashi interrupted.

"Ah come on! I'm trying to lighten the mood!"

"Leave it to the professional, Mohawk." Coco switched her seat and sat next to Summer. "How are you feeling, Ms. Rose?"

"I'm okay. Thank you all for helping me." Summer finally spoke. "I just…I couldn't stop thinking about him, being alone out there."

"It's alright. You know, Arc maybe a trainee like us, but he is your apprentice. He may not be skilled, but he is strong-willed, resourceful and a survivor. He's smart enough not to pick a fight he couldn't win. He has no talent, but he has potential. And that's not all. He is the luckiest guy in the world to be trained by you, the Hero of Remnant. He will stand his ground no matter the odd out there. As someone who saw him in action, I have faith in his ability."

The confident input made her smile a bit.

"Wow, that's something." Sky commented. "Hey, Cardin. You want to say something?"

"What? What should I say?"

"Anything, man! Come on, at least put in something." Dove chimed in.

"Okay, fine! Jauney, err, I think he's brave."

Silence.

"That's it? You were with him for a whole month before and that's it?"

"And he's clever…..I…I don't know, man! I ran out of things to say. I'm not good at this stuff."

"Don't forget." Fox said, motioning his head to a furball on the floor. "We have this little guy with us."

"Bark!" Zwei the battle corgi was ready for action.

"We'll find our friend in no time."

Ting!

All of sudden, Summer's scroll vibrated. The screen shone, revealing her messages to Jaune. The little word READ was at the end of many un-replied texts.

Silvers widened. She pressed the call button on reflex.

"Jaune!?"

"…."

"Jaune!? Are you there!? Can you hear me!?"

"….."

There was no respond.

"Jaune, say something!" If this were a mistake, it would be such a cruel joke. Summer's voice softened as tears started to build up. "Please sweetie, let me know you're okay."

Ping!

A reply came. It was not a voice, but rather a text message.

[Jaune: That idiot is in a pinch right now.]

Summer was confused.

"Jaune? Who is this?"

Another text came.

[Jaune: But don't you worry, he's got help.]

Ping!

A picture popped on the screen. An unknown man appeared beat up with swollen eyes and bruises. A white board hanging in front of his chest. It read "Merlot Industries."

[Jaune: Say hello to Mr. Culprit~!]

The call ended. No one understood what happened on the other side. But a sense of relief already washed over them. And one last message came as ringtones constantly echoed around the Bullhead. Everyone got a message from Jaune's scroll.

It was the exact location of his whereabout.

There was the silver-lining. Summer could only hope they can get there faster.

What a surprise.

Would you take a look at the amounts of messages and missed calls on his scroll. He only lost contact for a few days and a ton of people were searching for him already! Oh well, she shrugged. There was no point in asking that question.

Putting that aside, she was impressed.

That boy managed to fix the CCT station. At the same time, he compromised his known location to every presence as a result. The whole town became so lively as the mob rushed to their one and only target. But thanks to that, a certain nefarious scheme ended up in smoke. Rescue was on their way. Now, she would lend him a land.

She tasted the last spoon of her strawberry ice cream and stood at the edge of the central building. The parasol playfully spun in her hand. Merlot's subordinates were having fun wiggling on the floor with ropes, broken bonds, tears and bruises.

Someone will pay for turning those innocent people into monsters.

But that was not her concern.

Neo stretched her arms. She had so much fun watching that boy and his goofy antics in these two weeks. He needed a reward. Yes, it sounded delightful. She held up the scroll, his scroll, toward the shattered moon and winked at the camera.

Flash!

And saved the picture as the background. There!

Parasol opened, a smirk formed on her lip. Neo jumped off the building and let the wind carried her to where the struggle began.

Author's Note: This is a continued one-shot I came up for an AU where Jaune is Summer's apprentice and the mentor is actually Remnant's Hero. Junk of texts here and there, but there're also little bit of world building details to this AU. Most of the content were just dialogues because they were through the scroll calls, voice messages and recorder. There could have been more but this is how the scenario played in my head.

Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoyed it.
