Space Is No Place For The Weak

Living In The Shadows Of Heroes

PEACE OUT!

"This thunderstorm is the perfect backdrop for your demise," Android 17 purred, a manic grin lighting up his features as he stared in delight at the Saiyan trying so hard to be brave. Android 18 allowed a small smile to grace her features as she lets out a small sigh, signalling that she wants to get this over with. 17 only grinned wider in response. "I've always enjoyed the rain."

Not always.

"Stop crying, Lapis." His sister ordered, her voice plain and devoid of any emotion. Lazuli's long blonde hair was styled perfectly - almost too perfectly - as she glared at her brother underneath an umbrella she did not extend to him.

Lapis merely sniffed in reply, rubbing his eyes as he stared at the coffin that held his mother's body. His father who was to the left of him let out a shaky breath as he stood right in his place staring in front of him, his eyes glazed, his bottle clenched in his hand. Lapis turned back just in time to see his mother being placed in the cold, hard ground.

He was almost scared, waiting with baited breath for his mother to jump out of the coffin and laugh at him for believing her prank again, her radiant blue eyes shining as she beamed at him.

He wished he could see her again, touch her soft blonde hair that Lazuli oh so adored, grab her and hug her till they both started laughing.

But this was not a movie, or a fairy tale Mama would tell him that always had a happy ending. This was real life, Lazuli had told him, and no tantrum would bring her back.

As soon as they had returned, Lazuli and Papa immediately went back to their respective rooms and left Lapis alone to his thoughts.

He managed to reach his room and fall on the bed before his tears once again fell. He hated it, feeling so teary when Lazuli had repeatedly told him, irritated, hat men do not cry, and Mama would be disappointed in him if he cried all the time.

So he managed to calm himself down - perhaps after half an hour, but Lapis would never say that freely - and let himself reminisce over his beautiful mother.

Sapphire Spinel was a model, as one would easily be able to tell if they met her. She had met her future husband in a magazine photoshoot, and they had instantly hitten it off. 6 months later they were married, and within 2 years, both Lapis and Lazuli were born.

It seemed as if beauty was in their genes as both children were inherently beautiful with their porcelain skim and bright blue eyes. They were all almost identical, but Lapis had their father's dark hair and Lazuli had their mother's fair hair. Lapis secretly despised it, wanting to look exactly the same as his sister so they could fool people sometimes. Lazuli, however, didn't share the same idea, as she loved her blonde hair, begging their mother to braid her hair exactly the same way as she used to do. Lapis had pouted.

But soon, Lapis didnt care about how their hair, not when Mama was lying in a hospital bed waiting for death -

Cancer, the doctor had said. He hated the word. He had come to associate the word with grief, as he watched his mother die slowly, painfully. She was alone when she received the news, and she was alone when she left them behind. It was something none of them could forgive themselves for, leaving her alone in her final moments.

He was jerked back to reality as Lazuli walked in. Lapis immediately sat up, staring at his sister as she sat down on his bed.

He managed to find his voice and murmured, "Lazuli?"

Lazuli hummed in response, her eyes flicking around his room, clearly too nervous to relax.

Lapis said quietly, "Mama said we should always stick together, right...?"

That seemed to break Lazuli out of her stupor. She stared at Lapis for a few seconds, unreadable, before her eyes softened.

"I know."

Lapis took that as an invitation to continue.

"But will we?"

"Will we what?"

"Stick together."

Lazuli sighed. "I don't know, Lapis. I can't tell the future."

Lapis shifted uncomfortably. "...What if we travel in time."

Lazuli scoffed. "That is impossible, silly!"

Lapis didn't seem to hear her. His eyes glazed over as he whispered, "If I could go back in time, I would stop Mama from getting sick."

Lazuli only sighed in response. "I would too... but we can't. We have to make do with what we have now."

Lapis only sniffled in reply.

Lazuli let out a long-suffering sigh before opening her arms.

Lapis stared at her in surprise.

Lazuli raised her eyebrow. "Are you going to leave me hanging here?" She said drily.

Lapis' eyes filled up with tears. He leapt forward towards Lazuli's warm embrace and let out a sob.

Lazuli stroked his back, and told him quietly, "You better not cry on my dress, stupid." Her voice was strangely thick, and as she brought him closer, he felt his shirt getting wet.

"We have to WHAT?!" Lazuli screeched, standing up and glaring at the woman in front of them.

Lapis was silent, barely moving. This can't be true, he thought. This can't be happening.

"I know how you must feel, and trust me, I did not want to tell you this," the social worker said, sighing. "Your father had stopped working and his company became bankrupt. Your father is also an alcoholic and cannot be trusted with you two. You both no longer have a home, therefore you must be placed into care."

"But what about Papa?!! What does he have to say about this?!" Lazuli said, desperate.

"He is not in a right mind to speak with us, Ms Spinel, now please sit down. Your younger brother is acting more mature than you."

Lazuli flushed bright red as she turned around and stared at Lapis. The social worker faced him too.

She smiled at him and asked, "Is there anything you would like to know?"

Lapis was quiet for a moment. What did he want to know? He had so many questions that he knew she wouldn't be able to say.

He looked up at Lazuli, their eyes meeting. A look of understanding passed between them, and Lapis knew what he had to say. He turned to the social worker and asked, "Will we be together or will we be separated?"

The social worker looked at him in surprise, which slowly changed into a look of sympathy. "I don't know darling, that's up to my superiors to decide. I can put in a word...?"

"Yes, please!" Lapis said eagerly, his eyes glistening with unshed tears. This seemed to have an effect on the social worker, who smiled warmly in response.

"I'll see what I can do."

Lazuli interrupted by asking, "Will we be able to see our father again?"

The social worker looked up at her and said, "It depends on his recovery, sweetheart."

Lazuli simply nodded and looked to Lapis. "Where do we go now?"

"We can leave in about" - the worker checks her watch - "10 minutes, so look around one last time."

Lapis wanders around for the final time, this place he grew up. It is empty, but Lapis can remember everything that he experienced here vividly as if it was yesterday.

The only sounds are his footsteps and the suitcase he was dragging behind him, the echoing sounds of joyous laughter following him as he walks past rooms he remembers so vividly.

He wonders where everything went wrong.
