Married Before Seattle
Again, I don't own anything, I'm using some lines from the show, but everything belongs to Shonda. Thanks so much to everyone that favorited and followed my story. I'll try to post as often as I can. Hopefully at least every other day. Please review I would love to hear what you guys think or any suggestions you might have.
As soon as Derek finishes his speech everyone rushes to get a chart. Meredith knows almost all of them will head to the library, but she has a secret spot, Derek's office. She gets a copy of Katie's chart and waits for all the other interns to leave. Christina hesitates. "Are you coming?" She asks her.
"No, go on without me. I'm going to study somewhere else." She says glancing a Derek. Christina gets it and leaves with the rest of them. Once everyone is gone she walks over to Derek and sticks her hand out palm up.
"What do you want?" Derek asks her confused by the gesture.
"The key to your office. I know you locked it after we left." She says like it's the most obvios thing in the world.
"Aren't you going to go study with the other interns?" He asks her even though he already knows the answer.
"No. Besides Christina they're idiots and why would I go study with them in the library when I could study with you in your office?" She replies.
"Very good point. Let's go Dr. Shepherd." He says. They quickly head back to his office and sit down on the coach in his office.
"So, she's not Anorexic. It's not chronic renal failure or acidosis. It's not a tumor because her CT's clean. I've got nothing."
"What about infection?" Derek suggests.
"No white count and there's she has no CT lesions, no fever, nothing in her spinal tap."
"Aneurism?"
"No blood on the CT, no headaches." She answers.
"No drug use, no pregnancy, no trauma." He says running through things.
"We're out of answers, what happens if no one finds anything?" Meredith asks.
"You mean what if she dies?"
"Yeah, she'll never have gotten to be a person. The total of her existence will be almost winning miss teen whatever." Meredith says kind of sadly. "You know what her talent is?"
"They have talents?" Derek asks jokingly.
"Rythmic gymnastics. What even is that? I can't even say it."
"I think it's something to do with a ball or something." Derek replies. Meredith jumps up.
"I've got it!" She says.
"Well, what is it?"
"So. Katie competes in beauty pageants. She has no headaches, no neck pain, her CT is clean. There's no medical proof of an aneurism. But what if she has one anyways?" Meredith says excitedly.
"There's no indicators."
"She twisted her ankle when she was practicing for the pageant, she fell, when she twisted her ankle she fell. No big deal, not even a bump on the head. She got right back up and iced he ankle. It was a fall so minor her doctor didn't even think to mention it when I took her history, but she did fall." Meredith says, explaining her theory to him.
"Do you know the chances that a minor fall could burst an aneurism? One in a million, literally." He says doubtfully. "Let's go."
"Where?"
"To find out if Katies one in a million." They leave and go take Katie to another machine. "I'll be damned, there it is. It's minor but it's there. It's a subarachnoid hemorrhage. My wife managed to outsmart me on her first day."
"You sound so surprised." Meredith says happily. "She could have gone her whole life without it ever being a problem, but one tap in the right spot."
"And it exploded." he finishes. "Now I've got to go tell Katie's parents that she's having surgery. Meet me in the OR." With that he heads off to find Katie's parents. Soon after they're both in the scrub room. Meredith is just standing there.
"Mer, what's wrong?" He asks her.
"My rings, I have to take them off." She says upset. She looks down at the gorgious gold wedding band and sparkling engagement ring on her finger. Derek comes and stands in front of her.
"Take off your necklace." he says gently.
"Why?" Meredith asks him confused.
"We'll put your rings on it, so they'll be close to your heart." He explains. Meredith reaches around her neck and unclasps her necklace. Derek carefully slides the rings off her finger and onto the necklace before reclasping it around her neck. Meredith fingers her necklace before tucking it under her scrubs. Derek sees that it's hard for hr to take them off.
"Mer, we'll make this a ritual. Before surgery we'll put your rings on your necklace and afterwards you come find me and I'll put them back where they belong." This seems to reassure her. They both scrub in and get ready to start. "It's a beautiful night to save lives everyone. Let's get started." Derek skillfully starts the surgery. The gallery is full and there's people there standing too. Even the chief is there along with Meredith's fellow interns. "Dr. Shepherd would you like to take a closer look?" Derek says, snapping Mer back to reality.
"I would love too." She steps up beside where Derek is working.
"Would you mind holding this right here Dr. Shepherd?" He asks her. He must be losing his mind. No one would let an intern on their first day assist. Much less in brain surgery. She can tell everyone in the gallery is shocked and Bailey looks pissed. The seems to see what Derek is doing. Derek must have told him about the time her bet her she couldn't hold a clamp without letting go for 12 straight hours. Not only did she but she held it for over 24 hours before Derek relented and said she was right.
The surgery went quickly, and soon enough Derek was getting his resident to close. The two of them walked back into the scrub room before leaving. Derek quickly undid Meredith's necklace and slid the rings off into his hand. He redid the necklace before sliding the rings back onto her finger. Meredith goes to fill out the post-op charts and Derek went to talk to Katie's parents. Christina walks over and stands beside Meredith. "It was a good surgery."
"Yeah."
"I can't believe McDreamy let you assist."
"Me either. Wait, what? Who the hell is McDreamy?"
"That's what all the nurses and interns are calling your husband." Christina says laughing.
"I mean they're not wrong." Mere says laughing too.
"You should get some rest, you look like shit."
"I look better than you."
"Impossible." She laughs as she walks away leaving Mer to do charts. She's not alone long before Derek walks up beside her.
"That was amazing." Meredith says noticing Derek beside her. "You practice on cadavers... you observe... you think you know what you're gonna feel like standing over that table... but that was such a high. I don't know why anyone does drugs." meredith feels someone else standing behind them. She turns around to see Dr. Bailey standing there, and she doesn't look happy.
"I hope the chief know about your little situation here." She says.
"We have no secrets from the chief." Derek replies.
"So, the chief knows that you're and intern and an attending together even though it's against the rules." She says sounding almost a little confused.
"I certainly hope he does seeing as he was at our wedding almost six years ago." Meredith says, not wanting anyone to question her marriage.
"Dr. Bailey, Meredith- I mean Dr. Shepherd and I have been together for 8 years and married for almost 6. The chief was there for a lot of that so if you have a problem with our relationship, I would take it up with him." With that Meredith finished her chart and handed it back to the nurse and took her husband's hand.
"Ready to go home?" She asked.
"Ready." Together they walked out to the car. Marking the end of an eventful first shift. Leaving Bailey standing there shocked
I can't think of one reason why I want to be a surgeon. But I can think of thousands of reasons why I should quit. They make it hard on purpose. There are lives in our hands. There comes a moment when it's more than just a game... and you either take that step forward or turn around and walk away. I could quit, but here's the thing... I love the playing field.
