It's all about lines. The finish line at the end of residency, waiting in line for a chance at the operating table. Then there's the most important line... the line separating you from the people you work with. It doesn't help to get too familiar, to make friends. You need boundaries between you and the rest of the world, other people are far too messy. It's all about lines, drawing lines in the sand, and praying like hell no one crosses them.

"Bailey is going to be pissed." Mer says on the drive home from the hospital.
"You didn't do anything wrong. You told me the facts. She had no right to question our marriage." Derek reassures her.
"You don't understand, she's Bailey. She's probably not even going to speak to me."
"You're right, it is Bailey. She's not one to gossip. She won't spread things she doesn't know about." He says reassuring her. Soon enough they get back to the house.
"this house feels so much like mom, it's awful." She says once they get inside. "We should do something un-Ellis."
"What do you mean un-Ellis?"
"I don't know, something that she would never do. Like a party or roommates or paint the walls purple or something." She explains laughing.
"Roommates? Purple walls? Those are all very un-Ellis." He laughs. "A party doesn't sound to bad though. That does mean we'd have to deal with all these boxes and finish unpacking." He says pointing to the boxes covering the living room.
"I guess, but pizza first."
"Veggie pizza?" He asks hopefully already knowing very well the answer.
"I was thinking more like a super greasy pepperoni."
"Fine, but only if we can start unpacking afterwards."
"Deal, I'll start on this box here, you go order pizza." She says sitting down beside the closest box. Derek goes to order pizza and Meredith opens up the box. On the top sits a rather ugly looking doll. "It's anatomy jane!" She says picking it up. The doll's wearing a hospital gown and has rather short brown hair. Derek walks back into the room and sits down beside Meredith.
"What in the world is that?" He asks her.
"Pizza?"
"On it's way."
"In that case, this is anatomy jane. Ellis gave her to me when I was little. She has 24 detachable organs. She even has extra parts to simulate pregnancy. I used to carry her around everywhere." Mere explains to him. "I loved her."
"We'll set her aside and keep going."
"Alright. What's next?" She says opening the box again. She pulls out a child's winter hat. "I used to wear this every day to school."
"Do we need to keep it?"
"I guess not." She sets it off in another pile. She pulls out a pile of kids books. "I can't believe my mom kept these." She points at one of the books. "This one when you shine a light on the pictures you see the inside of the pictures, almost like an x-ray. This one is the surgery book: for kids. It was one of my favorites. I had all sorts of books about doctors or surgery. I think the only normal kids book I had was goodnight moon."
"We should keep these. They're really nice." Derek says flipping through one of them. He takes them and sets them with the anatomy jane doll.
"It looks like the rest of this box is just her old surgical tapes." Meredith says shifting through the rest of the box. Just then the doorbell rings.
"Perfect timing." Derek goes and answers the door and pays for the pizza.
Let's have some pizza!" Meredith says excitedly grabbing the box from Derek.
"I love you Meredith."
"I love you too Derek."
