"Ok, first I need a wand."
"Right. Wand…" She looked around and her eyes landed on a shop. "Ollivanders Wands. Here." They walked into a small room with no one in it.
"Hello?" Tom called. An old man with crazy white hair slid in front of the desk.
"Ah, Esmerelda. I've been expecting you." He said smiling at her.
"Oh. Really?" She asked, confused.
"Yes, of course. I remember giving your father his first wand." He sped into the back of the store and came out seconds later holding a small box. "Here, try this one." She picked up a wand. It was long and slim with dark wood. She waved it around cautiously and a bottle of ink spilled onto some papers. She jumped back surprised.
"Oh, I'm sorry." He took the wand back.
"It's alright. Here try this one." He handed her a different wand. This one was lighter color and well balanced in her hand. She waved it again and the ink disappeared off the papers. He smiled at her. "Lovely." She smiled at her mom and she was already digging around in her purse. She handed the man some coins and when she got the change they walked out the door.
"What's next?" She asked. Tom looked at the paper again.
"Books." They looked around again until her mom spoke and pointed to a different store.
"There, that place looks like it sells books." They continued the rest of the day until both of their arms hurt from carrying all the stuff.
"Home?" Tom asked and her mom nodded. They dropped her equipment in the trunk of their car and put her owl in the back seat. When they got home Tom was exhausted.
"Go to sleep. You have a big day ahead of you." Her mom kissed her head and sent her off to bed. Tom crawled into her covers and fell asleep quickly.
The next morning she worked up and ran downstairs. Her mom was already waiting with all of her things. Eggs and bacon with biscuits and tea were sitting on the table.
"Good morning."
She ran to eat breakfast quickly. When she was done she ran to get dressed. "Slow down, you'll hurt yourself!" Her mom shouted but Tom ignored her. She got downstairs and was finally ready. "Lets go." Her mom said, smiling. They drove up to the train station and parked the car. "What is the platform?" Tom pulled out a small slip of paper.
"The train ticket says 9 ¾."
"What?" Her mom asked, confused.
"Platform 9 ¾." She sighed and stepped out of the car.
"Ok." They loaded everything onto a trolly and set off towards platforms 9 and 10. "I don't see a platform 9 ¾." Just then a couple kids around Tom's age with trolleys similar to hers. "Let's ask them." They walk towards the kids and their parents. They all had dark brown hair and soft features. "Hi, do you know how to get to platform 9-" She was cut off by their dad.
"9 ¾? Yeah, follow us."
"Thank you." They followed the family until they stopped suddenly in front of a brick pillar.
"Here it is." Her mom was about to open her mouth to say something when one of the kids ran right into the wall. When he hit in, Tom flinched but the kid didn't hit the wall, he went through it. "Just run through the wall." Tom nodded and started running. She closed her eyes and when she opened them again, she was on a very crowded platform with a train with Hogwarts Express painted on the front. Her mom appeared behind her, a very shocked look on her face. The train honked its horn and Tom hugged her mom quickly as she rushed to get on the train.
"Bye mom. I love you."
"Bye. Have fun! I love you too!" She shouted after her. Tom jumped into the train and found a train car with only two people her age. She opened the door.
"Hi. Can I sit in here?" She asked.
"Sure." A boy answered with a very strong Irish accent. Him and a boy with dark skin were both sitting next to each other on the same bench and she sat across from them. "I'm Seamus. This is Dean." The other boy waved.
"I'm Esmerelda. But everyone calls me Tom."
"How come." Dean asked. "Tom isn't even remotely close to Esmerelda."
"Yeah but when people had a hard time spelling my name I decided I should go by a nickname and there aren't really any good ones for Esmerelda."
"So why Tom?"
"Apparently it was my dad's name before my parents separated and he changed it. I think it reminds my mom of the man she fell in love with and not the man he became."
"What's his name now?"
"I'm not sure. I've never actually met him. I don't know what he looks like, I got all my looks from my mom except for my curly black hair. I don't think my mom wants me to know anything about him, I'm not convinced he was a very good person but my mom says that I am a lot like him before he left." They nodded.
"Are both your parents wizards?"
"Nope, just my dad. You?"
"Me mum's a witch. My dad's a muggle. She only told him after they got married." Seamus said.
"My mom is a muggle and my dad's the wizard." Dean said.
"What's a muggle."
"It's what we call non magic people."
"Oh, alright." There was noise outside their car and someone opened the door.
"Has anyone seen a toad? A boy named Nevel has lost his." A girl their age with huge hair asked.
"No, I haven't." She answered. The others shook their heads and the girl sighed.
"By the way, I'm Hermione Granger." She stuck out her hand and Tom shook it.
"Tom." Hermione looked at her a little confused and Tom knew what she was thinking. "My real name is Esmerelda. It's a long story." Hermione seemed to accept the answer and turned around.
"By the way. We are almost there, you should probably get changed." She left them alone.
"I'll step out so the two of you can change, then you can leave for me."
"Sure." Dean said and Tom steeped out. The blinds were closed behind her and she waited until the door was opened and the two boys stepped out in their uniforms. "Your turn."
She slipped past them and closed the door. She quickly striped down and slipped into her school clothes. They were a little large for her but she figured she'd grow into them. "Ok, I'm done." She called and Dean and Seamus stepped in.
The train screeched to a stop and people crowded into the trian's halls. She stepped through the door, it was cold and dark out. A loud voice boomed through the air.
"First years follow me." She identified where the voice was coming from. It was a giant man with a crazy amount of hair that covered his entire face and shoulders. A bunch of kids crowded in front of him and followed him down some stairs to the water. There were boats sitting on the bay. The kids got in them in groups of three. She was in a boat between Seamus and Dean. They all row through the water following the giant. A castle came into view and people gasped everywhere. Her eyes went wide.
"Is this Hogwarts?" She asked Dean who was in front of her.
"Yup." All she could do was stare with her mouth open wide. Everyone walked through huge doors into an even bigger hall and up many stairs. A tall woman with a pointed hat and stern features was waiting at the top of the staircase. Everyone stopped in front of her.
"Welcome to Hogwarts. Now, in a few moments you will pass through these doors and join your classmates but before you can take your seats you must be sorted into your houses." Tom looked around and saw that a lot of people were nervous. "They are Gryffindore, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Now while you are here, your house will be like your family. Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule-breaking, and you will lose points. At the end of the year the house with the most points is awarded the house cup." Tom noticed a toad on the top step.
"Trevor!" A boy behind her called out. He ran forward and picked it up. He looked up and saw the teacher staring. "Sorry." He said quietly and fell back into the crowd. The teacher started talking again.
"The sorting ceremony will begin momentarily." She walked away towards the doors. Everyone stood there quietly until someone spoke.
"It's true, then." A boy with slicked back blonde hair said. "What they're saying on the train. Harry Potter has come to Hogwarts." Whispers and gasps came from the crowd of kids.
"Who's Harry Potter?" She asked Seamus.
"You're kidding right." She shook her head. She had always known about her father being a wizard and the existence of the wizarding world but she had a normal, muggle, childhood and wasn't up on the wizarding world news.
"No, I don't know who he is." He pointed to a boy with brown hair in the front.
"See him?" She nodded. "That's Harry Potter. Who was the only person known who didn't die when you know who tried to kill him."
"No, I don't know who." She said dumbly. He sighed and shook his head.
"We call him, you know who, because it is very bad luck to say his name. He was a wizard who turned evil and killed hundreds of people. One night he tried to kill Harry but couldn't and he has never been seen since." She looked at him, taking in all of the information. The teacher in the pointy hat came back into the hall.
"We are ready for you now. Follow me." She turned back around and opened the doors. Everyone filed in after her. It was a very large room with 4 long tables in a row and another in the front. She looked up and was surprised when she saw there was no ceiling.
"It's not real, the ceiling. It's just bewitched to like the night sky. I read about it in Hogwarts: A history." She heard a girl say in front of her. Tom suddenly felt very nervous that she hadn't read any of her books yet. The group was walking towards the front of the room where she saw a very old looking pointy hat on a stool. The teacher stopped when she reached it and turned around to face everyone. The group stopped behind her.
"All right. Will you wait along here, please?" She didn't wait for an answer until she started talking again. "Now, before we begin, Professor Dumbledore would like to say a few words." A rather tall man with a very long white beard stood up from his seat in the middle of the table in front. He looked at them all through half moon glasses.
"I have a few start-of-term notices I wish to announce. The first years please note that the dark forest is strictly forbidden to all students. Also, our caretaker, Mr. Filch," He gestured to a creepy looking mad with a car in the corner of the room, "has asked me to remind you that the third floor corridor, on the right-hand side is out of bounds to everyone who does not wish to die a most painful death. Thank you." He sat back down and Tom was left wondering what could possibly be in the 3 floor corridor on the right-hand side. The teacher in the emerald green cloak unrolled a parchment and she started talking again.
"When I call your name, you will come forth, I shall place the sorting hat on your head and you will be sorted into your houses." She picked up the hat and started reading names of the parchment. "Hermione, Granger." The girl who had come into their car earlier stepped forward. Tom couldn't hear what she was saying but she could see she was nervous and talking to herself. She sat down and the hat was placed on her head. It started to talk.
"Ah, right then. Hmmm. Right. Ok…GRYFFINDOR!" It shouted and one of the tables closest to them on the left erupted in cheers. The girl happily skipped over to sit with her new friends. Even though Tom knew nothing about the different houses she was suddenly very nervous.
"Draco, Malfoy." The blonde boy from earlier walked up. He sat down on the stool as the hat was lowered onto his head. The hat had barely touched his hair when it shouted.
"SLYTHERIN!" The table on the left closest to the wall clapped and cheered.
"There wasn't a witch or wizard who went bad who wasn't in slytherin." She heard a red headed boy whisper next to her.
"Susan, Bones." She called. This continued for a while until she called Harry and everyone went silent. "Harry, Potter." The boy with brown hair and round glasses sat down. The hat was placed on his head. He sat there for a long time. Tom could see him whispering something to himself. It was quiet for a little while longer until the hat spoke.
"GRYFFINDOR!" The table from earlier Shouted and cheered louder than any other table did for anyone else. She felt herself suddenly want to be in Gryffindor.
"Esmerelda, Stone." She walked up shyly. She sat down and the hat was placed on her head.
