Sophie sat at the edge of the pristine bed, watching Keefe with sympathy.
He wasn't probably wouldn't ever wake up. He had been in a coma for over three years now and they had tried everything. They had even called Lady Gisela but even she had not known why Keefe wasn't waking up.
Sophie gingerly touched Keefe's hair, brushing it out of his eyes carefully.
"Oh, Keefe," she said softly, "why won't you wake up?"
Keefe stayed stone faced and motionless, the only movement being the steady rise and fall of his breathing.
At least he was still alive. At one point, his heart had completely stopped beating and nothing they did got it to start up again.
Finally, Dex hastily created a kind of shock machine similar to the human defibrillator but with some extra tweaks and that had saved Keefe's life.
Sophie had never felt so relieved.
Her hand strayed to Keefe's cheek and she swiftly pulled her hand away, as if he were a burning hot stove.
"Keefe," whispered Sophie, "please wake up."
When nothing happened, she sighed and walked out of the room sorrowfully.
She made her way out of the door and literally bumped into Fitz.
"Fitz!" Sophie exclaimed, feeling her cheeks heat up, "I'm so sorry, I wasn't looking where I was going!"
Fitz flashed her a perfect smile.
"It's fine," he said in his infuriatingly attractive voice.
Sophie brushed a stray strand of hair out of her eyes.
"So," she said, drawing out the o, "bye for now?"
"I'll see you soon," Fitz promised.
"Bye," Sophie said, giving an awkward wave and light leaping away.
She walked to Calla's Panakes and sat under the gently swaying branches.
The Moonlark exhaled deeply, closed her eyes and rested her head on the trunk of the tree.
She didn't realise it, but soon she drifted into the inscrutable void of dreams and had fallen fast asleep.
SOPHIE!
SOPHIE!
SOPHIE!
A voice woke Sophie up, pulling her out of the quickly fading dream and into the real world.
FITZ? she transmitted, yawning and groggily forcing herself to stand.
FINALLY! her cognate replied with a brain-splittingly loud volume.
WHAT'S WRONG? she asked, feeling her heartbeat quicken when she remembered that Fitz was at the infirmary. IS KEEFE OKAY?
HE'S FINE. Fitz assured her. BETTER THAN FINE. THAT'S WHY I REACHED OUT. I FIGURED YOU'D WANT TO KNOW THE GOOD NEWS RIGHT AWAY.
Sophie's heart skipped a beat as she waited for the news she subconsciously suspected.
KEEFE'S AWAKE.
