Proud to Be Me

Summary: In hindsight, Trina should've suspected this. Pansexual Trina. Twoshot

A/N: This features a nonbinary character named Addison(or Addie) Ross. I hope I wrote them well enough as I'm not nonbinary nor trans. Addie's pronouns are they/them.

Part One

Trina Robertson meets her roommate, Addison Ross the weekend she moves into her dorm room. When she enters the room, she spots the twin bed on the left already made. The walls on that side adorned in posters of classic rock bands and fairy lights. The bedspread covering the bed is red and green plaid and fluffy decorative pillows adorn it, a stuffed animal in the shape of a white and orange cat lays amongst them. She blinks at it, awed that her roommate had got done unpacking so fast and begins to fix up her own side of the room when she hears someone clear their throat and turns around sharply.

She's immediately met with a tall, willow figure with light brown hair in a chin length bob, freckles, and sharp green eyes. "Hi." She says simply, running her sweaty palms on her pants leg before holding one out to shake. "You must be Addison."

They look her over carefully in a way that makes Trina feel very seen before a smile curves their thin, pink lips. "Addie. That's what everyone calls me." They state with a shrug, the neck of their baggy, white t-shirt exposing their collarbone a bit. Their nails are cut short and painted a dark purple, and a pinky ring on their finger. They pull their hand away then and go to take a seat on their bed. "So what are you in for?"

Trina stands in the middle of the room, tangling her fingers together nervously. "I'm here for art history." She replies with a shrug. "What about you?"

Addie sighs. "Science. The world could use more enby veternarians."

An eyebrow raises at that, one of interest. "That's definitely true." Trina says in agreement with a sharp nod of her head for emphasis.

"So..." Their eyes flicker to some pictures Trina has stuck to the corkboard above the bed, landing on the one of the girl with two boys and a pretty blonde at a Pride parade. "Which letter are you?"

"Huh?" Trina wonders, confused before she looks behind her. "Oh. I'm not actually any of those things. I'm an ally. I went to Pride to support Joss and Dev." She points them out with her pointer finger. "Josslyn is bi and Dev is asexual. They both came out last year."

Addie laughs at that. "If you say so." They utter before puling out their cellphone. "I'm going to pick up something to eat. You want anything?"

"No. No thank you." She manages a smile. She watches her roommate leave before her smile fades and she dials Josslyn's number, thankful that at least one of her best friends isn't so far away.

Josslyn and Trina meet at a pizza place halfway between UCLA and USC and after hugging take a seat across from each other in one of the red booths, both ordering some sodas and a large Margherita pizza. "So what's up?" Josslyn asks, taking a long sip of her cherry coke. "You sounded like you needed to talk to me about something."

Trina tucks a braid behind her ear and swallows hard. "I met my new roommate. Their name is Addison-or Addie. They noticed that picture of me, you, Dev, and Cam at Pride earlier this summer."

The blonde frowns. "Your roommate's not homophobic or anything, right?" She questions, defenses up, looking ready to stand up and go give this Addison hell if they had to.

The other girl shakes her head frantically. "No!" She says sharply, before lowering her voice. "No. Not at all. They just...seemed to think I was lying when I said that I was straight."

Josslyn snorts at that, folding her straw paper with delicate fingers. "Well Dev and I did both come out in weeks of each other. He's definitely joked about whether or not you or Cam would come out next." She shrugs a slim, tanned shoulder. "Your roommate doesn't know you yet."

"Wait...what?" She asks incredulously. "When did Dev think this?"

She received an impish grin in answer. "It was when I came out to him. He laughed because both he and I had come out and then he wanted to make a bet if you or Cam would next. I refused, of course."

Trina sucks in a breath at that. "Well...thanks for that, I guess."

Their conversation is broken for a moment as their waitress comes and places some cheesy bread in front of them and informs them their pizza will be out in a few minutes.

Josslyn throws the young woman a smile just on the edge of flirtatious as she says thank you, watching the woman leave before turning her attention back to Trina. "So your roommate is cool otherwise?" She asks, taking a huge bite of her cheesy bread, chewing it and swallowing it carefully.

"I just met them, Joss." The other girl answers with a laugh. "But they seem fine. I guess I'll see we get to know each other."

"Well, I'm sure you'll be friends in no time."

The two teens finish their food and then hurry out to the parking lot, hugging one another goodbye, promising to talk to one another tomorrow before they both got into cars and head back to their dorms.

Trina heads back into her dorm to see Addison sitting on their bed, Indian style, Mcdonald's bag beside them, munching on french fries.

"Where were you?" They ask curiously.

The girl sprawls out on her bed with a sigh. "I met up my best friend, Joss. She goes to USC."

Addie smiles a little bit sadly, swiping their hands on their purple leggings. "It's nice that you two are so close." She comments, green eyes a bit dark.

Trina turns her head ever so slightly to look at Addison, furrowing her brows. "Well I'm sure that you can relate." She states with a shrug.

They shake their head negatively. "Not really." They deny with feigned casualty, trying to hide their pain and hurt. "I grew up in a small town. A really judgmental small town. Not many people were accepting of me when I came out as an enby lesbian."

She feels a tug at her gut, feeling slightly guilty though she knows it's not her fault. Not being accepted isn't something Trina is used to. Everyone had readily accepted both Josslyn and Dev when they came out as bi or asexual respectively. Port Charles wasn't perfect, of course, but it was filled with some loyal and loving people. "I'm sorry that happened to you." She tells her roommate apologetically.

Addie gives a trembling smile at the girl's wide, sad eyes. "It's not your fault." She reassures. "That's just how small towns tend to be, everyone caught up in old traditions."

Trina frowns, feeling angry on their behalf. "That doesn't make it okay!" She proclaims, voice laced with anger. "You should've had people in your life that stood by you."

They give a shrug, their hair falling in their eyes slightly. "You're right about that." They admit. "But I can't be angry at those people constantly. It's just not healthy for me at all. Anyone who doesn't accept me isn't someone I need in my life." Their eyes lock on Trina then. "So I'm guessing your friends had entirely different experiences from mine?"

The girl in question pulls her legs up to her chest and wraps her arms around them. "Definitely. Joss' family was super supportive when she came out. So were her volleyball teammates and her friends. Same with Dev. Joss and her boyfriend at the time, Oscar even set up this alternative dance back in Sophomore year because our school wasn't going to let trans kids dress as they felt most comfortable."

Addie looks with huge green eyes. "Josslyn sounds great." They say in a wistful tone, wishing desperately that they'd had a friend like that when they were in high school. It wouldn't have made life perfect, but it would've made it a little bit easier to have someone on her side.

"You know, I can introduce you two." Trina offers. "Maybe sometime this week?"

Addie's eyes widened. "That sounds great!" She exclaims. "That is if you're sure you're okay with it. I don't want to step on any boundaries or anything."

Her roommate's brows furrow. "Why wouldn't I be okay with it? Joss loves meeting new people and I think that you'd both really get along." She walks over to Addie's side of the room and takes a seat on the bed, squeezing her hands reassuringly. And if her heart feels as if it's ricocheting out of her chest at Addie's hands in hers, she ignores it.

It's a few days after Trina has moved into her dorm and hen classes have begun that she and Addie go to meet Josslyn at a coffee shop.

The blonde is already there, sitting at a table, scrolling through her phone, long, golden hair in a ponytail. Her eyes flick up immediately, as if sensing Trina there and she stands to her feet, immediately wrapping Trina in a warm hug. "Hey!" She says happily, pulling away. Blue eyes immediately fall on Addie and she beams up at them, face warm and bright. "You must be Addie. Trina's told me about you." She shakes Addie's hands gently. "I hope you like coffee. I came to this coffee shop last year when I was touring colleges. It has some of the best pastries."

Addison nods. "I love it." They say before taking a seat in one of the chairs.

"I'm going to go get something to drink. Do you want anything?" Trina asks, turning her attention on her best friend and her new friend.

"I'll have an iced French Vanilla coffee." Addison answers with a small grin.

"I'll take a frozen mocha." Josslyn replies, throwing her friend a smile as Trina nods and hurries up to the counter. Her attention turns to Addison. "So Trina says that you're studying to be a veterinarian?"

Addie nods. "Yeah. I love animals a lot. What about you?"

The blonde shrugs. "I'm not really sure what I want to do yet." She admits. "There's a lot I'm interested in, but I don't have a set goal like you or Trina."

"I mean, that's understandable. You're only eighteen." They offer. Their expression turns serious then. "So...um...did Trina tell you that I'm, you know?"

Josslyn brows furrows. "No! I mean, I suspected, just based off of the way Trina talked and how she referred to you, but she wouldn't out you."

Addison lets out a breath. "Well, I'm a nonbinary lesbian." They explain. "I'm out and proud, but the people in my home town..." They swallow hard. "They weren't so accepting. Small town Minnesota and everything."

Her eyes become soft and sad at that. "I'm so sorry." She says sadly just as Trina comes back and places their drinks in front of them.

"Woah. What do you to look so upset about?" She asks in a voice filled with alarm. Noticing the tears in Addie's eyes, she places a gentle hand on their shoulder and squeezes comfortingly. "Are you okay?"

Josslyn watches the two of them with interest glimmering in her pretty eyes, taking a sip of her drink. Trina's behavior towards Addie is familiar, reminiscent of how Oscar or Audrey had treated her. She doesn't say anything though, instead, filing that thought into the back of her mind.

It's in November that Cam comes out to Josslyn, Trina, and Dev on facetime as demiromantic. He's beaming happily, seeming comfortable in his own skin, his face brighter than it's ever been. It's then that Trina realizes that she's the only one of her friends that isn't a member of the lgbtq+ community. It makes her swallow and shift in her seat, questions nagging her brain that she doesn't feel comfortable answering just yet.

"You seem confused." Addie comments as they come in, tearing off their jacket and bag, throwing them both onto their bed. "Is something wrong?"

Trina jumps at the feel of a hand on her shoulder and blinks rapidly before turning to face her friend. "Uh...Cam kind of came out as demiromantic." She tells them, confusion in her voice. "I just kind of realized that I'm the only one who's straight in my friend group."

"Oh. Well congrats to him." They don't tell Trina their suspicions or what's on their mind, knowing all too well that people need to come out when they're ready. They can't be forced to. "I'm going to go take a shower. Maybe we can order something to eat afterwards?" At Trina's answering nod, they grab some pajamas from their dresser and head down to the coed bathrooms. It's there, as they're soaping up their hair in the shower that they promise themselves that they'll be by Trina's side when she figures things out, no matter what it is.

Next Part: Trina takes Addie home with her to Port Charles, Trina realizes some things, Addie and Trina get caught under the mistletoe.
