Chapter 3

Hamilton's POV

I sat down with my cup of coffee and took a sip, grabbing the newspaper I had picked up from this morning's run which I hadn't had a chance to look at.

What could be happening in the world today?

I knew what was going to be in there, of course. Yesterday's incidents would soon catch up to me, maybe even be the death of me.

There wasn't much surprise when I saw Burr's name in the headlines (along with Peggy's, of course) . I skimmed through the other articles to see if there was anything interesting before I got down to business.

I turned to the correct page to be greeted with a massive photo of the bank Madison and I 'borrowed' from (James' words, not mine) . Writing covered the page head-to-toe with what almost seemed to be an action-movie script at first glance.

'Yesterday afternoon, an unfortunate series of events occurred when Officer Aaron Burr and civilian Peggy Schuyler were found tied up and unconscious in the Bank of Manhattan'

Well, at least they found them, I'm sure they're fine. We barely touched them!

'The two, severely injured, have both been placed in hospital.'

See? That's good! They're fine and the gang has the money. Personally, I believe this mission was a big success!

I chucked the newspaper away once I was done, neither Madison nor my name was in the article. I hopped of the stool I was placed at. Gulping down the rest of my now lukewarm coffee, I grabbed my royal blue jacket and my keys, heading out the door to the station.

I think I was pretty good yesterday at hiding my nervousness, nobody seemed to pay much attention to my sweaty forehead or shaky palms. We were safe for now.

I arrived at the station and stepped through the door, immediately greeted by Charles Lee.

"H-Have you seen Aaron, Sir?" he awkwardly 'saluted' me as his forehead shone under the dim light illuminating the room.

"You're on a first name basis now, eh?" I smirked and narrowed my eyes at him.

His face grew redder, "What? W-We're friends! Friends say each other's first names? Do YOU not? What friends do you have? Weird ones I bet if you-"

"I was making a joke?"

"O-Oh. Sorry." He turned his attention to his feet, shuffling in his spot like he was uncomfortable.

I rolled my eyes and sighed, "No, I haven't seen him. He's in hospital, don't you read the news?"

"I thought you might have visited him, you are really good friends. Though, you two have been more distant recently, maybe you had something to do with the robbery and hurt him and Peggy? That would make a lot of sen-"

"I didn't! And no, I didn't go to hospital BECAUSE I just found out he was there and was running late for work!" I folded my arms and huffed.

He paused for a moment, looking me up and down in what seemed like fear, then apologised and ran off, calling for someone else.

I sighed once again and walked over to my office, immediately going to spin in my chair. It relaxed me a lot.

I 'drove' the chair over to the window and looked out my windows on the opposite side of the door. I was on the second floor, So I had a standard view of the city from my office.

I will admit, though, that was probably the only decent thing about this place. The room was small, and was covered in paperwork head-to-toe, at least they were in piles depending if I had completed them or not.

There was a small plant in the corner next to the door, it wasn't that nice looking, but it added a homely touch to it.

I span over to it and looked at the small tag attached. The label was rubbed off, but I could make out the word's 'snake' and 'plant'. Guess I'll leave that to whoever is listening to my jumbled, broken thoughts to figure out.

I spun back to my desk and grabbed the pile of unfinished paperwork that was sloppily piled by the desk's legs and placed it to the right of my workstation. I had just grabbed the first couple unfinished pages when my phone rang.

"Whaddup?" A familiar voice greeted me from the other end.

"Hey Thomas, you good?"

"Yeahhhhh, I guess. Still pissed you got to go on that adventure with Madison instead of me. Rookie's gotta learn I guess"

"Don't worry, I'm sure you'll have your shot at doing something soon, I'm preeeety sure I'm done for,"

Jefferson chuckled over the phone. "Bet. Georgie is mad. Real mad."

"Georgie?" I cringed at the nickname.

"Mhmmmm. It helps me see him in a lighter way. Especially at the moment after your little-"

"I get it, he's mad. Have you seen Burr or Peggy?"

"Burr's unconscious at the moment, but seems to be stable. Peggy on the other hand... She isn't doing good..."

"She put up a fight. We had to."

"Dude! She was really hurt! You didnt have to go that far!"

"We had to"

"But-"

Suddenly, the door to my office burst open.

"You. Me. My office. NOW," Washington said in a calm, but deathly tone.

"Oop- Daddy's calling," Jefferson joked in my ear. Ignoring him, I iimmediately hung up the phone and stood up, sweat forming on my brows. He stormed out of the office up the stairs to his one, I silently followed close behind. He was pissed. Real pissed.

He opened the door and turned around, his eyes following me into his office with furious intent. As soon as I entered, he slammed the door.

His gaze seemed to soften a bit, but his body remained tense and broadened as he walked over to his desk and sat down. Sighing and placing his hands closely to his face, he calmly stated:

"I've made it a rule to not shout at rookies, but what the hell was that yesterday?" His gaze turned back to me, now with coldness and what almost seemed like murderous intent in his eyes.

I said nothing. Yeah, fine, I'll admit it. I was petrified of Washington. Even when he compliments me it sends a shiver up my spine.

"Burr can't catch on about us, and we assume it was him in the meeting point the other night. We've had to move rendezvous point because of your utter laziness."

I slowly shrunk back into myself and avoided eye contact in embarrassment, keeping silent.

"You physically hurt Burr, and used excessive force on Peggy for no apparent reason. Have you nothing to say for yourself?"

Silence.

He stood up and looked at the ground, closing his eyes for a moment.

Silence again.

"Im giving you one. more. chance."

"Thank you Si-"

"Get out of my office."

I scurried away and didn't look back, wiping my brow with my sleeve.

I passed Laurens in the corridor, who obviously knew what had happened because he smirked lightly when he noticed my flushed face.

I stomped down the stairs and shut the door to my office. Sitting down, I hid my head in my hands so I didnt have to face the mess I had made.

After a while, I picked up my phone. I needed to talk to someone.

I went into messages and clicked Eliza`s name.

"Hey,"

Angelica, then.

"Hey Angelica,"

They were probably mad about Peggy, I honestly felt like crying.

In the rush of tears forming in my eyes, making everything barely visible, I accidentally clicked on Burr's name.

I dried them once it said he was online, though. This might be pushing my luck.

"Hey,"

...

...

...

"Hi! Sorry my head's still fuzzy and forgot how to say hello lol,"

He didn't know

"Haha,"

I paused, then added:

"You doin better?"

...

"Not passed out, so I guess you could say so, my head is still pounding tho,"

...

"Awww, that sucks :( I'm sorry,"

...

"Lol you don't have to apologise, not like you were the one who hurt me,"

My shoulders tensed.

"I guess... Still feel bad I didnt stop u from going in there,"

...

"I don't think you could've. I didn't see you fighting against the riot so I didn't ask for help,"

Uh oh.

"I was probably still in one of the cars getting out. I was on the driver's side so I was right next to the crowd,"

...

"Oh right ok lol. Glad u r ok,"

He believed the lie. God I felt so bad.

"Well, hopefully you recover soon, it's lonely without you!"

...

"Awww. You flatter me,"

A smile grew in the corner's of my cheeks.

"Well, I gtg do paperwork. Get well soon!"

...

"Ty! Bye!"

I put my phone down and, honestly? I was a mess of emotions.

He was the only person who liked me right now, but I got him stuck in the hospital.

Well, guess there wasn't anything I could do about it now...

My thoughts were interrupted by my phone vibrating, signalling a text was sent.

I opened the message and saw it was from Eliza.

"We need to talk,

It's about Peggy."
