I hope you all are enjoying the story so far. Let's find out more about Edward and his passengers.
Chapter 2
By the time my team and I arrived on scene, the police had already blocked off the scene. Looking around the area, it was worse than Aro had originally described, there were fresh tire streaks swerving all around the road and ended at the guardrail, or what was left of it. It was completely ripped in half, a huge part missing from the rail and both separate ends were bent all the way back. This car must have been really hauling-ass.
"Whatta we got, Sam?" I asked one of the officers.
"It's pretty bad", He began. "The car was accelerating pretty high and then hit a large puddle, causing them to hydroplate off the road and into the ditch."
"Have you been able to make contact with the driver?" I followed up.
"No. We've tried calling out to them, but got no verbal response."
Just as Deputy Sam was finished giving us the rundown, the area was suddenly pierced with the loud shriek of a child's scream. The entire team's eyes to navigate to the overturned car, where the scream was arising from. Everyone suddenly threw themselves into overdrive.
"CODE RED! CODE RED!" Sam called into his radio. "We have a child in danger! Repeat, child is inside the overturned car! I need all hands on deck now!"
While Sam got his team together, I turned to mine to direct orders. "Guys, get the oxygen ready, as well the gurney and I need the cable." I continued giving out my orders as we made our way into the bus.
"Jasper, I need you to lower me down to the car, then bring the gurney down once you do. Got it?" I asked him.
"Got it man. Be careful" Jasper warned me, as he finished connecting the cable around my waist. Once Alec had finished getting the gurney setup we made our way to the car. The screams of fear and terror were still going strong as Alec and Jasper lowered me down to the car. One of the back windows had been busted open, probably from the impact of the accident, so I was able to get a good inside the vehicle. What I saw would cause even the deadest of hearts to break.
A little boy, probably no more than three year old, was hanging upside down and being held by nothing but the straps of his carseat, with tears running down his little face. That little face which was now bright red from the screaming he had been doing for the last ten minutes and his little button nose streaming mucus. When his eyes met my gaze, I could see the sadness that just poured out of them, but that look was suddenly replaced with pure fear and downright terror when he saw me. Of course this little guy was afraid, here is this strange man looking into his car, while he's hanging upside down and has no idea what is going on.
I can honestly say, with all my years of training and experience, that nothing could have prepared me for the utter sorrowful scene I was witnessing.
"Shh…" I tried calming the boy down. "It's okay, buddy, It'll be okay. I'm here to help you."
I tried giving the door a try, but it was stuck and wouldn't budge. I quickly got the crow bar out of my belt and jammed it in and with the one hard thrust forward, the door unlatched. The little boy was still crying as I crawled my way into the car.
"It's okay, little guy. It'll be alright" I attempted again to calm him down. I was able to disconnect his carseat from the main seat with ease. "Thank God his parents remembered to properly secure his seat" I thought to myself. Hunched over in the back seat of the car, I was able to unbuckle the crying toddler from his seat. But, even being freed, he still continued to scream. Only this time, he screamed out a name.
"Mama! MAMA!" He continued to yell out. I took a quick glance over at the drivers side and saw a billow of brown hair from the side of the headrest. I was so squeezed into the backseat, that I couldn't really get a full look at the drive, but from what I could see, it was definitely a woman and from what the little boy was screaming, was his mother as well.
Once I got the boy out of his chair, I tried cradling him in my arms, but the little guy attempted to break free of my grasp and crawl to his mother, still crying as he did so.
"No, no, no" I told him. "No, big guy, we gotta get out. It's okay, I got you" I tried soothing him.
"MAMA! MAMA! MAMA!" He continued to shriek as we exited the car and the further we got away from the car, the louder the screams became.
"I'll get your mama" I promised him and I meant it. Just something about this little toddler in my arms made me want to protect and keep him safe and happy. I couldn't tell if it was just my protective, caring nature, or if it was something more.
"I got the kid" I hollered up to the team above. The gurney was settled at the bottom of the hill and was ready to go. I laid the little boy down on top and strapped him in safely. I gave Jasper the all clear, while he pulled and I pushed the gurney back to solid ground.
The boys crying had a quitted some and now was just a noticeable whimper. I could tell that he was now a little bit more relaxed, which would make it easier for one of the guys to look him over, once he was in the bus. We were finally back on top of the road, when the little boy spoke again.
"Mama?" Asking me this time. He looked up at me and I could see a pair of piercing chestnut eyes staring back at me. Pleading with me really, and I couldn't help but lean forward and give a soft embrace.
"I'll go get momma, bud. I'll go get her." I promised as I turned my gaze to Jasper. "Dude, lower me down again, his moms' still in there." I tightened the cord around my waist and was lowered down once more.
When I got to the car, I made my way to the drivers and used the crowbar once more to open up the door. Once it was released, I looked inside and was once again struck with awe and dismay. Nestled in the driver's seat, laid the most beautiful young woman I'd ever seen. Even hanging upside down, with her face covered in scratches and cuts of glass, I could see the beauty beneath it all. She had long mahogany hair, thick eyelashes and the most angelic face. The little boy claimed she was his mother, but she looked far too young to be anyone's mother.
What The Hell Am I Saying!?
This is completely inappropriate. Here I am, gawking over an unconcious girl, while she's dangling upside down after being in a car accident. How sick is that?
I quickly snapped out of it, then made a hasty effort to unbuckle the poor girl from her seat. As I reached around to unfasten her, she began to come to. Her eyelids flutter opened in haze, giving me a peak of her chestnut eyes, identical to the boy's. Seriously, what is wrong with me?
The woman seemed to still be trying to gain consciousness when her gaze turned to me and we staring at one another face to face. In that one sliver of a second, it was like time had stood still as we made eye contact.
Breaking our gaze she finally spoke, trying to at least. "My...my son?" She tried to ask, not giving more than a whisper. She obviously knew who I was, or rather what I was and knew I was here to help.
"Shh…" I hushed her. "Your son is fine, he's safe. You both are. Don't worry, I've got you." I assured her. I think she was waiting for my confirmation about her child, because once she heard me tell her her son was fine, her eyes closed once more and I felt her go limp. I supported her, unleashing her from her seatbelt and gently eased her back down and cradled her out of the car. I carried her away from the accident, bringing her over to the dropped down gurney and laying her down, as I did her son. We then were both lifted out of the ditch and were both brought back to safety.
"Good work Cullen" Sam, praised me, once my legs were back on the road.
"Thanks man" I appreciated. I then helped Jasper push the unconcious girl on the gurney towards the ambulance. We then gently pulled her into the back of the bus and secured her.
"Where's the kid?" I asked Jasper, I checked the locks on the gerney.
"Alecs' got him, he seems to be doing alright. He stopped crying and doesn't appear to have any serious injuries." He informed me, pointing to our colleague who had the small child resting on his lap.
"Great. Alec, hand me the kid, I can sit with him back here while you two drive us back."
"How's everyone doing Cullen?" Sam came over to ask me, as Alec handed me the toddler.
"The boy's fine, but we got the mother out of here now. We don't know the extent of her injuries and we've got to hurry." I told him, as I climbed into the back of the truck.
"Got it man. We'll clear the wreck and give you any updates if we find anything" Sam told me, closing the door to the bus. I took the little boy in my arms and placed him in my lap as we sat next to his mother.
"Let's get out of here guys. GO!" I shouted to the front.
With the sirens wailling and the lights flashing, we rapidly made our way back to the hospital
