Parallels
"I see you spend a great deal of time with Miss Granger," Dumbledore said with a sly grin on his face.
"We're just friends," Harry said rather defensively. He knew what Dumbledore was hinting at though, because everyone had suspected something was going on with him and Hermione.
"I knew of two friends who were rather close like you and Miss Granger," he said as she unwrapped a lemon drop. "But I forgot how long ago that was," he popped the hard candy in his mouth and gave a wink towards Harry.
"Are you talking about my parents Professor?" he asked with his eyebrows furrowed together. His friendship with Hermione was strictly platonic.
"Yes," he answered rather simply.
Harry stood there confused to why Dumbledore would draw this connection. Didn't the old man know he fancied a certain red-head? Harry had thought it was obvious to everyone except Ginny how he had a massive crush on her.
Dumbledore studied Harry's face as the boy tried to understand why. "I'm sorry I asked," he laughed. "I understand now you and Miss Granger are strictly just friends?" he waited for Harry to confirm this statement. Harry nodded his head yes. "Very well," the old man smiled. "Just be grateful to have Miss Granger by your side…she is very valuable."
Harry knew this to be true. He would have dead a long time ago if it was for Hermione.
"Good night, Harry," he said finally shooing the boy out of his office.
Harry left confused. As he walked back to the Gryffindor Common Room he kept thinking what the old man and everyone else had been seeing. In his mind him and Hermione had always given off best friend vibes, but apparently to other's it was seen as something more.
"Pig snout," he whispered and the Common Room door flung open.
Everyone was most likely sleeping in their beds, but he saw a silhouette seated on the sofa in front of the fire. He walked over to the big maroon sofa and discovered a sleeping Hermione. A book was in her lap.
Harry smiled at the sighting of the book. She had always been such a book-worm. He gently shook her shoulder.
"Hermione," he whispered.
"Um Harry is that you?" she asked sleepily.
"Yeah," he crouched down in front of her. "You fell asleep on the sofa."
Hermione slowly opened her eyes and took sight of her surroundings. She had fallen asleep reading her book on the sofa. "I was worried about you," she looked into his green eye's finding comfort in them. He was safe. Relief washed over her.
"I was with Dumbledore," his eyes locked onto her caramel one's. "And I'm sorry I didn't tell you-"
She interrupted him, "Harry it's not just that," she looked away from him. "You have been so secretive this year and I'm trying to be strong…" her voice broke into a whisper. "But I'm scared Harry. I'm scared that I will lose you and I don't…"
Harry stood up and sat next to her on the sofa. Hermione was unable to hold back the tears. She sobbed loudly. He pulled her into his arms and held her. His thumb brushing against her warm cheeks wiping away the tears.
"I'm sorry," he whispered.
"You need to let someone in Harry," she said rather bossy. "And I don't care if it's not me, but please let someone in because people care about you…" she locked her eyes onto his once again. "I care about you," she admitted.
Harry pulled her closer to him. He had missed talking to her, but he promised Dumbledore he would kept their missions a secret. "Okay," he said finally.
Hermione untangled herself from him and stood up to go to bed. Harry quickly jumped as well and pressed a kiss against her forehead. It was his way of telling her they would be okay. He would let her in eventually.
Hermione turned to go upstairs when suddenly Harry grabbed her hand and turned her back around.
"Hermione we are friends right?" he asked her out of nowhere. Hermione nodded her head. "That's what I thought too. But Dumbledore well he thought differently…"
Hermione laughed, "He enjoys toying with you, Harry."
Harry was about to say something when the room around him changed. Hermione was gone. He heard the door open and in walked a teenage boy like himself. The boy paid no attention to him instead the boy had walked straight over to the sofa and sat down.
"You fell asleep on the sofa again," the boy said to the mystery figure on the sofa.
Harry crept closer to the sofa trying to get a look.
"Well, James," A girl's voice said rather sternly. 'I wouldn't have fallen asleep here, if I wasn't up all night worried about you getting into trouble."
"Lily," he heard the boy argue his point. "I have a map…remember?"
"I've been worried about you," the girl sighed exasperated. "And I know you have map, but you have been so secretive with me…" the girl paused. "I wish you would let me in James…we're friends right?"
James sealed his answer with a kiss pressed against Lily's lips.
Suddenly the room changed again, and Hermione was back in front of him. Her hand still in his, but her eyes were heavy with worry.
"Harry are you okay," she asked worried.
"Parallels," he said with a big grin on his face. He finally understood why Dumbledore thought he was with Hermione.
"What?" Hermione asked confused. She hadn't let go of his hand and Harry had noticed this.
Normally Harry wouldn't know what to say in this situation so he took a note from his dad's book and sealed his answer with a kiss. Her lips were soft against his and she tasted like honey. At first she was too stunned to respond to the kiss, but after a few seconds she found herself kissing him back.
His hand tangled itself in her unruly hair and she had wrapped her arms around his neck. She fit perfectly in his arms and mentally he kicked himself for not seeing it sooner.
She was his best friend like his mum had been his dad's friend.
Hermione was smart like Lily had been.
Everyone thought they were a couple, before they realized their own feelings for each other.
Both couples were too stubborn to see the love everyone else saw between them.
Hermione and Harry were a parallel to James and Lily,
and if it weren't for Dumbledore's meddling Harry might have never seen it.
