Summary: 28-year old Blaine Anderson, a former US army soldier, is recovering from physical and mental trauma at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital where he meets Kurt Hummel, his angel in human form.
Important: I don't own Glee and their characters! I also apologize for any mistakes. English is not my mother tongue. Also, there are two minor character deaths in this story. It's not Klaine, I promise, but I wanted to warn you nonetheless.
I'm so sorry for the long wait! The first 2 weeks of 2021 were crazy work-wise, but on the bright side… I finally got my COVID vaccination. Let's hope it'll get better in the world soon.
I should warn you for the amount of Cooper in this chapter/story. I'm just in love with him and I have no idea if I should add him to the character list in the summary. What do you think?
Without further ado, enjoy chapter 7!
Chapter 7 – "Light Them All Up."
"You have your date tomorrow!" Cooper screeched, waving his arms around frantically as he entered Blaine's room inside Burke's.
It was Sunday afternoon and Blaine was currently in his wheelchair, pacing around like he would be doing when he could still walk. He was crazy nervous about tomorrow, even though he already knew Kurt liked him.
He still couldn't believe Kurt liked him, maybe that was why he was such a wrecked ball of nervous energy.
"Well, um… yes," Blaine mumbled as he watched his crazy brother skip around the room. "Cooper…" He whined, trying to get his brother's attention, eyes wide and sparkling.
"Uh oh… I don't trust that look. What's wrong?" Cooper finally stood still long enough for Blaine to take a deep, shuddery breath.
"I'm nervous…"
Cooper barked out a laugh and raised an eyebrow at Blaine. "Seriously? You already kissed the dude, he told you he likes you and now you're worried?"
"Yeah, well… It's been a long time since I've gone on a date, okay?" Blaine bit out, closing his eyes as he drove himself towards the window, bumping into the table in the corner of the room.
"Woah, let's not injure yourself any further." Cooper moved over to Blaine quickly and detangled him from the awkward position he was in.
"Thanks…" Blaine whispered, slightly embarrassed. "It's just… It's been over 10 years since I've last been on a date. Ofcourse I have… experience with men, but it's not like I wanted to be in a relationship with them."
"And with Kurt it's different?" Cooper asked as he sat down opposite of Blaine, folding his hands around his brother's.
"Ofcourse it's different. I want to give him my world, even though it's very small."
"Hey, Blainers… Look at me." Cooper pressed his finger underneath Blaine's chin, forcing him to look up into his eyes. "You are a catch. There's no way Kurt wouldn't like you. You're compassionate, selfless, not too bad on the eyes, strong… If I wasn't your brother and I would be gay…" Cooper trailed off, shrugging.
"Ew, stop that, Coop," Blaine laughed and scrunched up his nose in disgust, wiggling it. "But thank you… I sometimes forget I'm not in the army anymore. In the army there wasn't time to second guess. I've always worked very impulsively."
"I get that. Now with Kurt, you have all the time to think about it, to doubt everything. I ask you not to. Go into this date very open minded. You've already kissed, you've already had an important conversation, you already know he really, really likes you. Stop being insecure and embrace this relationship."
"I don't know what I would do without you," Blaine sighed out, opening his arms. He caught Cooper in a tight hug and they stayed that way for a few minutes, just happy to be in each other's presence, knowing Blaine wouldn't be shipped back to Afghanistan again this time.
"You are my best lil bro, Blainers," Cooper exclaimed as soon as they released each other, each shaking out the kinks of their tightly squeezed hug.
"I'm your only lil bro," Blaine joked back, wheeling himself around Cooper towards the window, where autumn leaves were colouring the ground a nice chestnut shade. He sighed longingly, wanting desperately to dance through the twirling leaves still falling from the trees.
Suddenly, he got an idea. "Let's go outside!"
"Sure!" Cooper said enthusiatically and jumped up, grabbing both his jacket and Blaine's off the rack. He shrugged on his own and then helped Blaine with his, at last handing him a thick scarf, which Blaine folded around his neck, giving his brother the thumbs up.
"I want to dance…" Blaine spoke with a sparkle in his eyes as he plucked his phone off the night stand and putting it inside his pocket.
"You… want to dance?" Cooper asked, eyebrow raised as he stared at his little brother, currently looking like an excited puppy inside his wheelchair.
"Yes… Please?"
"Put away those puppy eyes and let's go outside. Do you have a song in mind we can dance to?" Cooper moved behind Blaine's wheelchair and started pushing him towards the exit of the hospital.
Blaine grabbed his phone from his pocket and went to his Spotify favourites playlist, scrolling through it with a frown on his face. He had a lot of different kinds of genres on there, but he felt like a pop song, so as soon as they reached one of the courtyards of the hospital, he clicked on "Classic" by MKTO.
Cooper's eyes lit up as the intro of the song started playing. He actually jumped up and down, clapping while wearing a big grin on his face. "I love this song!"
The two brothers soon held each other's hands, as Cooper twirled Blaine around in his wheelchair. An actual crowd was gathering around them, some of them actually filming their performance.
The Anderson brothers were not ones to deny their audience a truthful performance, so as soon as the rapping part came up, Blaine took the imaginary microphone with a loud laugh and a teasing wink.
"Baby you're classic and baby, you're sick. I never met a girl like you ever 'til we met. A star in the 40's, centerfold in the 50's. You got me trippin' out like the 60's, hippies. Queen of the discotheque. A 70's dream with an 80's vest. Hepburn, Beyoncé, Marilyn, Massive. Girl, you're timeless, just so classic!"
The crowd actually applauded when Blaine was done rapping and handed Cooper the invisible mic back, who immediately started the last refrain, shaping one hand as if he was holding the mic and the other hand was twirling Blaine around, who was laughing so hard it was impossible to be discreet.
As the song drew to a close, the two brothers made a bow into the direction of their audience, who were still applauding and grinning. The girl who had been filming the whole thing actually came up to them with an enormous grin around her lips, winking at both boys.
"That was amazing. It's great to forget sometimes…" She trailed off, suddenly feeling shy.
Blaine spotted one arm wrapped in bandage, all the way from the wrist to the shoulder. He nodded, as his eyes involuntary trailed to his missing leg. "I know exactly what you mean."
"Can you send me the performance?" Cooper butted in and the shared moment between two people who were both mourning was lost. The girl had the excited glance back in her eyes and Blaine's cheeks were still flushed from the performance.
"Ofcourse!" The girl blushed, clearly recognizing Cooper from movies, and they exchanged details, while Blaine pushed himself away towards a big pile of autumn leaves, trying to kick against it with his good leg. At the third attempt, he succeeded and all the leaves were twirling through the air.
Blaine looked up with a dreamy smile on his face. He could have fun in this chair. He could still do things he loved doing before the accident. He just had to adapt, which couldn't be that bad. People all around the world adapted all the time. Losing a leg wasn't the end of the world, even though sometimes it felt that way.
The ex-soldier's heart felt light, fluttery, like it had grown wings and could leave his chest at all times. While he still had a long way to go, it felt amazing to start accepting. With such a goofy and amazing brother, loyal and crazy friends and perhaps, maybe a wonderful, kind and gorgeous man in his arms, he could conquer this feeling of loss.
"Sorry, I'm back," Cooper said, pulling Blaine back to the present.
"Aren't you worried she's gonna stalk you now she has your phone number?"
"Nah, she seemed okay, lil bro. Sometimes you need to take a risk in order to get something you truly want. In this case, the video of the performance. Can I send it to Kurt, please?"
"Oh, no, oh no, no, no, no, no!" Blaine started shaking his head frantically, eyes wide on his big brother.
"Why not? We were amazing, like back in the days where we would perform around the piano for the house staff!"
"First I need to see it, I probably look like a fool," Blaine mumbled as he snatched Cooper's phone out of his hand, scrolling to the last message he had received which held the video of the dancing turned impromptu performance. He furrowed his eyebrows together as he saw himself in the chair, but quickly dismissed the uncomfortable thoughts and really looked at the video.
The man in the wheelchair looked… happy, excited and had a healthy glance in his eyes, which made his hazel eyes sparkle in the soft sunlight of this beautiful autumn day. It made Blaine's heart skip a beat or two when he saw that, confirming the positive thoughts he had felt right after the performance.
It was empowering to see himself still in his element, without treating the wheelchair like an inconvenience, but rather like something he could learn and live with.
Before Blaine even knew it, his eyes started leaking tears, nearly dripping onto Cooper's phone. He quickly pushed it back into his brother's hands, who looked surprised and ducked down in front of Blaine's wheelchair.
"Hey… Sad tears?"
"No," Blaine shook his head and smiled weakly. "Happy tears, I promise."
"Care to share with the class?" Cooper joked as he moved behind Blaine's chair again, pushing him to walk an extra loop around the hospital.
"I just… I'm really happy to see myself still enjoying stuff, y'know? I was in a low place for a long time, ever since the accident, and I was just used to seeing the negative side of things. But today I felt amazing after the performance. And then when I saw the actual video, it was just… proof of my uplifted spirit. It was great."
"Hey, lil bro! That's amazing! Dr. Rose would be happy to hear about it tomorrow!"
Blaine grinned proudly as he tucked his nose further into his scarf, warming up the tip. "I think so too."
"Can I now send the video to Kurt?"
"You don't even have his number," Blaine teased back, sticking out his tongue and waving his phone around. "But I do… and yes, send it to him. And send it to me aswell."
The two brothers wandered around the area around the hospital for a little while longer, until Blaine couldn't feel the toes on his one feet anymore, suddenly cold from sitting still for too long. They moved inside and back to Blaine's room, where Blaine put Kurt's number into Cooper's phone so he could send the video to Kurt.
"Just attach one word into the message of the video… Just put: "Surprise!" and then send it without any other context, not even your name."
"Oh, you wanna be mysterious. I approve, Blainers!" Cooper wiggled his eyebrows and sent his brother a wink, typing out the short message, attaching the video and hitting send before Blaine could chicken out.
"It's done, there's nothing I can do about it anymore," Blaine sighed dramatically as closed his eyes, breathing out a tired sigh. "Oh, I'm suddenly really tired."
"Do you want me to look for Brianna, so she can help you to bed?"
"You just want to have a private conversation with her, huh? I can just call for her through the call button. Leave poor Brianna alone."
"Hey! Why are you mocking me, sir?" Cooper said accusingly, but with a teasing glint in his eyes.
"I thought you liked Quinn?"
"Yeah, but I think she's into Sam, the night nurse." Cooper stuck out his underlip, pouting as he shrugged. "Ah, well… Plenty more fish in the sea."
"I think it's better for you to date someone inside the L.A. area. I don't think you are cut out for long distance."
"I think you're absolutely right, little brother."
"I'm always right," Blaine replied teasingly as he wheeled himself over to the bed, where he pushed the red button to call for assistance. He just really wanted to take a nap.
Within a few minutes, Brianna skipped through the door, her red hair, wrapped into a high pony tail, bouncing on her head. "Hi, Blaine! Hi, Cooper! What can I do for you?"
"Can you help me onto the toilet and then into bed?" Blaine asked, still hating the fact he sounded a bit too shy for his liking.
"Ofcourse, Blaine. Do you want Cooper to stay or should I… remove him?" Brianna asked with a wink, laughing as the eldest of the Anderson brothers huffed out a "hey!".
The curly-haired man inside the wheelchair couldn't help but to laugh aswell, already loving the dynamic between Cooper and Brianna. "He can stay. He's a good soul."
"I know he is," Brianna answered with another teasing wink, now into Cooper's direction and Blaine was surprised to notice his brother's cheeks flushed an impressive shade of red.
Brianna made quick work of first helping Blaine onto the toilet and then inside his bed, underneath the blankets, where the ex-soldier sank back into the mattrass, sighing contentedly.
"Thanks, Brianna." Blaine shot a thankful smile into the direction of the weekend nurse, who waved back and disappeared through the door again, on her way to her next job.
"Ugh, Brianna is amazing," Cooper sighed distractedly, watching the closed door with glazed over eyes.
"Okay, earth to Cooper Anderson!" Blaine snapped, though with a teasing squeak in his voice, which brought the actor back on earth, shaking his head quickly to get rid of the thoughts clouding his mind.
"I'm back, I'm back…"
"Instead of me having dinner in the common room and you in your hotel, do you think you could go and get some burgers and fries and have dinner here in my room?" Blaine asked with sparkly eyes.
"Oh my god, yes," Cooper growled playfully as he immediately shrugged on his jacket, patting his pocket to see if his wallet was in there. "I'll be right back. A cheeseburger, oh mighty Blaine?"
"Yes, and garlic powdered fries, please! Thank you!"
With a graceful bow, Cooper left the room. Blaine could hear him greet someone just outside his door and with a smile, he settled himself into the mattress better and closed his eyes.
Instead of darkness, explosions and his friends laying lifeless in the sand, Blaine saw himself perform on a big stage, in his wheelchair, next to Kurt, belting out "Come What May" from Moulin Rouge.
A man can dream, right?
Kurt Hummel had just finished the Sunday matinee performance of "Dear Evan Hansen", when he exited the stage, hugging some co-stars and congratulating them on yet another great show.
Tiredly, he moved himself to his dressing room, where he sat down and wiped the make up off his face with a wet cloth. He removed his stage clothes and traded them for a relaxing set. He needed to be on the stage in 4 hours again anyway and he was planning to lounge inside his dressing room, maybe have dinner with some cast mates and maybe calling Blaine if the ex-soldier wasn't currently busy.
Grabbing his phone off the desk, he moved himself towards the big couch in the corner of his dressing room where he sat down, sinking into the soft cushions, when he heard a knock on the door.
"Mr. Hummel?" A head peaked around the corner. It was Hannah, one of the backstage assistents, holding a big glass of lemon tea. "I've come for your tea."
"Thank you so much, Hannah," Kurt said gratefully, as he flashed a hopefully bright smile into the direction of the young assistent. Her cheeks flushed as she hurried out of the room again, mumbling something underneath her breath.
Kurt was left alone, which he hoped would be for a little while longer, so he could check his messages on his phone in peace.
Opening the first one, it was Rachel saying how they had run out of almond milk and he should go get a new stock. Kurt rolled his eyes and quickly replied, reminding her how he was working until 11pm. She had Sundays off, so how should it be fair that he had to go grocery shopping?
The next message made him pause for a second. It was an unknown number and the only thing it said was: 'Surprise!'. It had a video attached to it. Frowning, Kurt clicked the image and waited for the download for a few seconds until the video popped up on his screen.
He squeaked excitedly when he saw Blaine and Cooper on screen, dancing on some kind of pop song Kurt couldn't recognize. He laughed when Cooper started twirling Blaine in his wheelchair.
Focusing on Blaine, he could see the blissful happiness all over his crush's face. He was sitting inside his wheelchair in a relaxed manner, his stump tucked into pants resting comfortably, not twitchy or stiff from pressure.
It was a sight to behold and it took Kurt's breath away. Blaine was such a beautiful man and it made Kurt grin that Blaine could still be spontaneous like that. He hadn't known the man for a very long time, but he could see Blaine must have felt the most free in that moment than he had felt for a while. Probably ever since the accident that took his right lower leg that Kurt still needed to hear the story of.
The video took a surprising turn when in the middle of it, Blaine started rapping over the song playing from his phone and it rumbled a laugh through Kurt's chest. His heart skipped a few beats at the way Blaine was smiling from ear to ear and even though it had been filmed from a small distance, the smile Blaine flashed to the audience Kurt was sure had gathered, was infectious. It made Kurt copy Blaine's smile, although he was sure he could never look as beaming as Blaine looked right in that moment.
Heart in his throat, he applauded as the Anderson brother stopped the performance and Kurt could hear applause coming from around the person who was filming, confirming Kurt's guess about a gathered audience.
Before he could even think about it, he dialed Blaine's number, pressing the phone close to his ear, cradling it in between two hands, as if he could hug Blaine that way.
His crush answered on the third call, slightly out of breath. "Hey, Kurt!"
Kurt could hear a lot of sound coming from the background. It sounded like a chair was being scraped harshly over the floor and before he could prepare, a loud voice boomed through the speakers, so deafening, Kurt let out a surprised squeal and dropped his phone.
"Cooper!" Kurt could hear Blaine yell, as he quickly took his phone out of his lap and pressed it against his ear again, eager to hear Blaine's voice properly.
"Hello, Blaine," Kurt chuckled as his heart slowed down after the unprepared shock. "Is your brother being an ass again?"
"Isn't he always?" And Kurt was sure Blaine was actually rolling his eyes, but he could also hear the fondness in Blaine's voice. They must really care for each other. It made Kurt pause for a second and think about his own brother.
He missed Finn like crazy. His death had been unfortunate, just after Kurt's first year at NYADA. It had made a great impact on his family and ofcourse on his friends from Glee Club, especially Rachel, who had always thought her and Finn would end up together, even though they weren't talking much when Rachel was in New York.
Even Santana never really recovered and there was a constant emptiness inside the apartment, although Finn had never lived there in the first place.
Finn's life was being celebrated by a big framed portrait hanging above the couch in the living room. It was the centerpiece of the room and Kurt loved staring at it every day and thinking back on something goofy his brother had done when he was still alive.
Time healed, sure, but the pain would always remain.
"Kurt?" Blaine carefully and quietly asked through the phone, sending Kurt back down into reality.
"I'm so sorry, I spaced out for a minute... I was actually calling because I received a very interesting message containing a certain performance in one of Burke's courtyards."
"What did you think?" Blaine sounded scared and Kurt thought that was really not necessary, especially because if he had been right, Blaine had benefited from the positivity of the performance.
"I thought it was amazing, Blaine. You two were amazing… And your rapping, oh god… I've never laughed so hard in my life."
Kurt was sure Blaine was blushing all the way to the tips of his ears and he desperately wanted to nibble on those ears, teasing him… Now was not the time to get flustered, though.
"I'm glad to hear that, we've had a blast."
"Now I'm curious which phone number I now have inside my phone."
"You are the proud owner of the phone number of Cooper Anderson, Hollywood actor and the annoying big brother of your date."
Kurt bit the inside of his cheek hard to contain squealing out when Blaine mentioned the date. It was tomorrow and Kurt hadn't been excited for something like that in a very long time. It made his heart flutter pleasantly inside his chest.
"Yes, I'll cherish it with my life."
"You better, I also need to pass on to you not to sell it on the internet. I know you could make easy money off of it, but it's not worth it…"
Kurt barked out a rather unattractive laugh, but surprisingly, he didn't care, not even in the slightest. "I promise I won't pass it around or even use it. I'd much rather talk to the youngest of the Anderson brothers."
He smiled smugly as he heard a sharp intake of breath from the other side of the line. He loved flirting with Blaine, it had been such a long time since he had flirted with anyone he was more than interested in.
"I'm… glad, Kurt," Blaine breathed out and yelped. "Ow, Cooper!"
Kurt laughed as his eyes glazed over, the breathy voice of Blaine doing something to the neglected cock inside his sweatpants. Maybe he could…
Quickly he dismissed that thought. He clearly didn't have enough privacy here, the bustle of a backstage Broadway show just behind the door. He couldn't risk being caught and maybe losing his job.
"I'm gonna let you go, Blaine, have fun with your brother and I can't wait to see you tomorrow…" Kurt purred out that last part of the sentence, hoping desperately he left Blaine wanting him.
"I… yes, Kurt, same here," Blaine managed to get out and Kurt was proud to find out he succeeded. "Bye…"
"Bye, Blaine," Kurt said breathily and hung up, a lazy grin around his lips.
A knock on the door brought him back into presence.
"Come in!"
"You… are… such… an… ass…" Blaine said through his teeth as he had his arms tightly wrapped around his brother's shoulders, trying to work his face down to his bed, meaning that he would win their game of brotherly wrestling.
Cooper was strong though, and he had the advantage of having the strenght of both his legs he could stand on, which was exactly what he did, fighting against his younger brother's strong arms.
"Damn it, you're strong…" Cooper breathed out with some difficulty, as Blaine had his arm pressed against the side of his throat.
"I've been in the army for the last ten years, don't underestimate my abilities, Cooper Anderson," Blaine bit out and with an animal-like growl, he pushed Cooper's head towards the mattress and sneaked his hand on the back of his brother's head, huffing thriumphantically. "I won!"
"I can see that," Cooper grumbled as he came up again, his irregular breath caught in his throat.
"Oh, you can't handle your younger brother beating you in a wrestling match." Blaine grinned cockily and received a slam on the head with a rolled up newspaper. "Hey, be gentle to your poor baby brother."
"You are not a baby anymore, not by a long shot," Cooper mumbled as he munched on the last, cold piece of his burger. He collected the trash and put it inside the trash can in the corner of Blaine's room.
"Oh, I'm so full," Blaine puffed out, placing one flat hand on his stomach and started stroking, while at the same time releasing big puffs of air from between his lips. "Also, I'm in desperate need of sleep. It's been a tiring day."
"Ofcourse, Blainers, I will go back to my hotel and be here tomorrow morning for our talk with Dr. Rose!"
Before the weekend, Dr. Marley Rose had suggested a therapy session with his brother, so the brothers could understand each other even better. She also wanted to tackle the subject of his parents and Blaine was sure he could only talk about these toxic people with Cooper inside the room.
"Okay, sounds good. Will you help me picking out an outfit for my date with Kurt after the session?"
"Ofcourse, lil bro. See you tomorrow."
With a tight hug, Cooper and Blaine said goodbye and Blaine watched him go confidently, like it was pretty normal to put your life on hold to fly to the other side of the country and take care of your younger brother.
Blaine was sure if it would have been the other way around, he would have done the same. Having Cooper here was all sorts of amazing.
"I'm fine, I'm fine, I'm fine," Blaine chanted, his face buried in his hands as his whole body shook, including his stump and he hated that. He hated the way the lifeless limp would twitch under the pressure. It made it look like a wriggling fish.
"It's not real, Blaine, it's not… real… It's not…" He mumbled as he felt his body calm down enough for him to push the call button. Sam wasn't here, but another very kind night nurse entered his room only a minute after he had called.
"Hey, Blaine, you're okay?"
Blaine shook his head as he was still shaking slightly, holding down his stump with two hands. "Can you… um… get me some sleeping medication? I'm having nightmares again."
"Sure thing, Blaine."
The nurse had disappeared again and Blaine forced himself to take deep breaths, in and out, as he stared through the tiny gap in the curtain. He saw a street lantern lighting up the street underneath it and there was rain falling, which calmed down Blaine even more.
The night nurse was back with a cup, holding a tablet and a glass of water. "Here you go."
"Thank you…" Blaine swallowed the medication with a full glass of water, looking at the cup disgustingly. "Why couldn't they give it strawberry flavour or something?"
The night nurse laughed and patted Blaine's shoulder. "That would be convenient. Can I help you with anything else?"
"Nope, I'm fine, thank you. Until next time."
"See you tomorrow night, Blaine."
The next morning contained of an overly excited Cooper standing next to his bed way too early, leaving Blaine groaning into his pillow as he sat up and waited patiently until Quinn would come and help him for the day. He still had an hour and a half until the appointment with Dr. Rose, so Blaine had no clue why his annoying brother was already here.
"Good morning, Blaine!" Quinn said chipperly as she entered the room and then her eyebrows rose up high. "And good morning to you too, Cooper."
"I was too excited to sleep. My little brother has a date in a few hours!" Cooper ruffled the loose curls, making Blaine duck in embarrassment.
"Oh, with Kurt, right?" Quinn responded excitedly, clapping her hands together. "He mentioned it when I spoke to him over the phone on Friday."
"Yes," Blaine quickly spoke before his brother could steal the spotlight. "I'm very excited. But first I have an appointment with Dr. Rose, together with this weirdo." He pointed at Cooper and rolled his eyes. "Now, leave! Quinn is gonna help me into the shower and I'm not comfortable with you watching."
"Okay, okay, I'm gonna go get coffee!" Cooper left the rooms with his arms raised high.
"What a crazy man," Quinn laughed as Cooper had closed the door and walked to the closet and fished out two clean towels. "Do you already want to wear your date clothes?"
Blaine shook his head as he pointed towards a little pile of clothes. "I grabbed that outfit yesterday. It's casual, but good enough for my session with Dr. Rose. I will actually pick out a date outfit after therapy, so I can dedicate 100% of my time to it."
"Good thinking!" Quinn said brightly and moved Blaine towards the bathroom, letting him sit down on the shower chair. She washed his hair and body quickly and expertly and within half an hour, Blaine sat in his wheelchair with freshly washed hair and a clean skin.
"Thank you so much, Quinn."
"No problem, Blaine. Shall I give you a ride to the common room?"
Blaine shook his head as he started pushing himself towards the door of his room. "No, I wanna do it myself."
"Okay, I'm just gonna go and get your pain killers. I will bring them over to your table, okay?"
"Okay!"
A few minutes later, Blaine had reached the table and was surprised he was the first one. His table mates were probably all still in bed or currently in the shower. He asked for a piece of toast and made a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, munching away on it happily.
He ended breakfast with a bowl of cereal, choco puffs, his favourite and drank the milk still left in the bowl. It tasted like chocolate milk. Awesome.
When he had swallowed his medication and his stomach was filled up enough to last until lunch, his date with Kurt!, he wheeled himself back to his room, where Cooper was already chilling with a large cup of coffee, reading today's newspaper.
"There has been a fire close to your old apartment yesterday, Blainers," Cooper said casually as he saw his brother wheel into the room.
"Oh, poor people involved…" Blaine stuck out his lower lip and read the article over Cooper's shoulder.
They proceeded to read the paper together, until a soft knock brough their attention away from the news of the world. Dr. Rose entered the room with her notebook and a cup of coffee in her hand.
"Good morning, Blaine. And good morning, Cooper. Glad you could join us!"
"Ofcourse, Dr. Rose. I want to help my little brother in his recovery."
Blaine groaned out loud and shrugged. "I'm not that little anymore, I'm almost thirty."
"Well, if you're almost thirty, then I'm almost 40," Cooper joked back, complete with his tongue stuck out.
Dr. Rose sat down on the wooden fold out chair, while Cooper went to the hallway to get on more chair for him to sit on.
They talked for close to two hours about absolutely anything and everything. Their parents were mentioned in detail and Dr. Rose was happy to notice the two boys had cut off contact with them. While she never encouraged parents neglecting their children, the stories she had heard were horrifying and Blaine and Cooper were better off without Yvonne and Jackson Anderson.
Once Dr. Rose left them alone after making another appointment with Blaine in two days time, Blaine suddenly felt a lot more nervous than that morning. There was nothing in between him and the date now.
He ran a hand through his curly hair, feeling the dampness in his hair and whined. Maybe he could tame it down just a little, to impress Kurt ofcourse.
With a shuddery breath, he turned towards his brother, who sat in his chair with his eyes closed, taking a deep breath in and out again.
"That was a good conversation, right?" Cooper asked, right after he opened his eyes again to look at his little brother with sparkly eyes, the same way Blaine's eyes always sparkled in delight, only a different colour.
"Yeah, it was, I'm really glad to have that all off my chest, now I can really focus on my date with Kurt."
"You deserve it, little brother," Cooper sighed out and then jumped up, opening the closet. "Now, let's find you an awesome outfit!"
Blaine ignored the nervous swoop in his stomach and rolled closer towards the closet, so he could see better and judge his clothes.
"Do you want to give away your colourful style immediately?" Cooper grinned teasingly as he held up bright red pants. "Maybe you shouldn't scare him off."
"Hey, those are perfectly okay pants, thank you very much! I don't want to lie to Kurt. Colourful clothes is my thing, so yes, I want to wear my own style."
"Hey, hey, okay, I meant no harm," Cooper replied with a wink. "So, these red ones?"
"Yeah… I have a perfect polo shirt that I can wear above it." Blaine reached above him, trying to pull the blue and white striped polo from a stack of shirts.
"Lemme help you before everything lands on the floor, Blainers," Cooper laughed and plucked the shirt from the stack, handing it to Blaine.
"Okay, and I need a brown belt. Can you get one for me? They are on the highest shelf. And also a red bowtie, please, they're just underneath the belts."
Cooper reached for the belt and bowtie and handed it to Blaine aswell, who looked content with his choices.
"How would I look?"
"Very dapper, Blaine."
"That's what I'm going for… Okay, I'm gonna call one of the nurses to ask to help me get changed. After that I should still have some time to style my hair."
"Don't gel it down too much."
"I won't, don't worry."
Just a he wanted to push the call button to alert a nurse, his phone beeped, alerting him of an incoming message. He quickly grabbed his phone from the bed and opened the message, his heart in his throat when he saw Kurt's name.
Hey, Blaine. Just wanted to let you know I'm about to drive off. I'll be there in an hour! I can't wait to see your amazing face. – Kurt.
"He's gonna be here in an hour," Blaine said nervously, swallowing away the uncomfortable feeling stuck in his throat.
"Okay, let's move!" Cooper called out, gesturing towards Blaine who pushed the call button.
Within 15 minutes, he was dressed. He chose a simple blue sneaker to wear on his foot. He wrapped the fabric hanging underneath his stump and tucked it away, so you couldn't see the remaining fabric.
He patted his curls down with gel slightly, but not too much. Hopefully it was up to Kurt's taste.
Another message came in just 10 minutes after he was done. It was Kurt letting him know he was parked in front of Burke's.
Kurt had let Blaine know, through text, he wanted to give him the full dating experience by picking him up, even though it wasn't in the traditional way. Blaine had agreed immediately, being a hopeless romantic himself.
"You're gonna rock this, brother. I'll leave you, but next time I'm gonna embarrass the hell outta you."
Blaine groaned, letting his head drop down and huffed out a laugh. "I know… See you later, Coop. Thanks for your help."
"Anytime, bro. Any time."
Only three minutes after Cooper had left the room, a knock startled Blaine out of his thoughts. With a nervous, shaky voice, he called out that his date could come in.
As Kurt pushed the door open, Blaine sat a bit away from the door, but still close, in his wheelchair, hands wrapped in his lap, looking up expectantly. What he saw then, took his breath away.
Oh, god. Kurt looked absolutely delicious.
Oops, I was gonna write the date in this chapter, but then my head thought of other things. Next chapter will contain the date for sure. Until next time, lovelies!
