RC laid his head down on his desk. The painkillers the doctor had given him last night had worn off, and his arms were killing him. The alley incident had really taken a mental toll on him; He couldn't even focus on what the teacher was trying to teach them today.
"...And in 1967 that's when the war was...Kawakami!" Mr Hisoka shouted, the large tiger folding his arms across his chest and raising an eyebrow at the tired-looking student. RC jumped upon hearing his last name; the class was now looking at him, he put his ears down, feeling embarrassed at being caught not paying attention.
"Yes sir?" he spoke, trying to keep his voice even and not give any sign of his pain or annoyance at being caught.
"Please see me after class," Mr Hisoka commanded before he continued his lesson. He had noticed that the wolf looked like he had been in a big fight, he looked tired and the bandages made it abundantly obvious that the wolf had not had a calm night. The students had been whispering about it all through his lesson, much to his annoyance.
When the bell went off signalling the end of class, RC stayed seated as his classmates shuffled around storing their books in their bags and exiting the classroom. Many of the other students glanced his way as they left, and he knew they were gossiping about his dishevelled state. He sighed, standing up and walking towards Mr Hisoka's desk and waited for the tiger to address him.
"You have been one of my top students, but you have not been paying attention today, and I'm worried that if this continues, it will negatively affect your classwork." Mr Hisoka said, putting his pen down and peering over his glasses at the wolf standing at his desk "May I ask what happened?" he asked, peering over his glasses at RC's arms. RC's ears flattened with embarrassment, and he took a deep breath, deciding to tell Mr Hisoka the truth.
"Last night I was out with a friend, and we got attacked, I..I-" a tear formed in RC's eye. The shock of the night had just hit him, and he realised that he hadn't actually discussed the incident with anyone.
"Ah," the tiger nodded pensively "It was obvious that something had happened... Do you need some time off? would you like me to tell the school".
RC gripped his arm and looked away, the wolf knew he couldn't afford to let his grades suffer, and clearly if he kept going the way he was, they were going to suffer. A few days to rest and recover from the ordeal could be a good thing. A chance to heal, both physically and emotionally. Despite the fact the large wolf hadn't answered, Mr Hisoka handed him a slip of paper "Take it to the office, it's valid for 2 weeks, you won't lose grades, but when you come back I want you at 110 per cent."
"Ah, yes sir" he bowed down in respect and left.
"The Endari or Canis Dregis stands about 6"5' for females and up to 7" for males. They have fur all over. They have long, prehensile tails which aid their incredible climbing ability, which aids their ability to survive in forested areas. It is not uncommon for this species to grow horns and spikes around the age of puberty. This species is considered endangered, and only a few pure endari are found working within modern society."
In the library, Fen was studying for an upcoming biology assignment when they glanced over and saw a black cat with a large bandage covering most of his face.
"Fuck!" they exclaimed, immediately raising the book to hide their face, occasionally peering over the top to track his movements.
The cat looked in bad shape, and it was clear that it was the cat that they had encountered in the alley the other night. Fen wondered if the cat was there looking for RC, he could usually be found in the library when he wasn't in class. They looked around for the wolf and couldn't see him, which was unusual.
They stayed where they were, trying not to draw attention to themselves as they watched the cat look around the library before leaving.
'He must be in the dorm… I should tell him about this' they thought, packing up their things as soon as the cat had left and making their way to the dorm to find RC.
RC was laying on his bed, scrolling through social media. Last night's events were still as fresh as the wounds on his arms, and he was trying to distract himself with mindless scrolling. his ears shifted upon hearing the door open, and he grinned slightly as a snout pushed past the curtain "There you are" Fen said, smiling as they climbed up onto his bed and sat next to him "I saw that cat in the library, I think he was looking for you… He looked like shit."
RC rolled his eyes and frowned "Yeah, I'm sure he's not happy about losing a fight that he decided to pick… It's only a matter of time until people put two and two together and figure out what happened."
Fen was about to respond when there was a sudden loud knock on the door.
"Who is it?" Fen called, switching to Japanese and looking through the peephole, it was the Dorm master. Fen cracked the door open and smiled politely,
"Is everything ok sir?" they asked.
"May I come in? I have someone I would like you to meet," he responded. Fen stepped back, opening the door and gesturing him and his guest in with a forced smile. They really hated sudden interruptions. RC peeked out from his bed as the two walked into the room.
"This is Fen, and over there is RC," He explained to the small fox who walked in by his side "they also immigrated here, so they will be able to help you to get used to our school."
Fen looked slightly baffled, they had forgotten that they were getting a new dorm mate.
The dorm master turned to Fen.
"I hope you and RC will do your utmost to help our new student fit in!" he patted the fox on the back before smiling at RC and Fen in turn and leaving the dorm room. The young fox smiled nervously at her new roommates and placed her bags down on the floor as RC stepped out of his little cubby.
RC smiled
"Don't worry, we won't bite," he said as he cleared some closet space "what's your name?"
"Oh, everyone calls me RaeRae." she smiled back and looked at the top bunk "Is this one free?" RC smiled and nodded
"It's all yours, also make sure you add your name to the board outside the door and label anything in the fridge that is not for sharing."
RC smiled "We also have a no sleep overrule unless we all agree to have friends over to stay." RaeRae smiled and nodded, her gaze locked onto the wolfs arms, some of the wrappings had gone red.
"Oh no, your bleeding!" the Fox said in shock.
"Again!" Fen shouted, jumping off of their bed. They had been watching their new roommate with suspicion and hadn't even noticed that RC was bleeding again. They grabbed some of the fresh bandages the doctor had given them "So much for picking your fights, you big dumb wolf..." Fen started changing the dressing on his arms. RaeRae looked around and got some towels wetting them to help clean the wound.
"Here," she said, handing a towel to Fen "let's not make a mess." Fen smiled a bit
"Thank you. can do his other arm for me?" RaeRae nodded with a smile and began working on his other arm, RC flattened his ears
"You know I can do it-"
"Sush and hold still," Fen chided, not wanting to hear his excuses, RaeRae let out a small chuckle.
"Anyone would think you're related," she remarked.
"Mhm, he's like a big dumb brother." Fen remarked RC rolled his eyes "Someone's got to look after him, or he would end up in a river somewhere."
"Well, we all need good friends to look out for each other." the fox said, now finished with the arm.
"It is probably why you're in here with us, we have a small language barrier, and it's safer for the 3 English speakers in the entire school to stick together," RC said, taking some painkillers.
"Wait, but we are not allowed to speak English?" RaeRae questioned
"Well, technically yes, but here we can, and when it's just us we can, but I would keep it on the lowdown," RC said, switching back with a smile. "Also, if you see a cat with an injury on his face, stay away from him." the Fox tilted her head, confused.
"Being a part of this room means you're a part of this group. So anything said in this room does not leave this room, ok?" RC got low and serious. RaeRae let out a squeak, surprised at the sudden change in tone and nodded.
RC sat down and sighed before telling RaeRae about what had occurred the previous night. Fen sat silently on their bed with their lips pursed. They weren't so sure that they should just be telling the newbie all this. RaeRae listened intently to the entire story and gasped when he came to the part when they were attacked in the alley and nodded solemnly.
"I definitely will stay clear of him.."
RC smiled thankfully before handing her a marker so she could write her name on her bunk "You're one of us now, and we will have your back" she took the marker with a small tail wag and nodded.
"You two need to go to bed, we have classes tomorrow," Fen said from in their cubby, glancing pointedly towards the clock hanging above the dorm room door. RC nodded and smiled, and the 3 started getting ready for bed.
Just as RC got settled in his phone buzzed.
"[Fen]she likes you."
"[RC]huh? Why do you say that".
"[Fen] god you're so clueless, gn."
RC frowned with confusion before he turned the lights out and the three settled down to sleep.
Outside the window, a pair of yellow eyes glinted.
Perched in the tree outside was the black cat, hood pulled up so that no one would notice his bandaged face.
"So… It looks like you have a new friend, wolf..." the cat snarled softly to himself, smiling deviously.
